  • Ep. 198 HOW I TRANSFORM DONATED PIECES INTO A STUNNING MOSAIC BOX!
I recently met a wonderful mosaic artist preparing to move across the country. She reached out and donated a carload of tiles and mosaic tesserae to me! I used a small bit of the donation to make this stunning mosaic box!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio!
0:05 My new substrate is a black cigar box. I have scratched up the surface with sandpaper and drawn some reference lines.
0:46 I start out with Weldbond after showing some of the pretty donated pieces. The first thing I glue down is a carved rose.
Here are some of the other materials:
    -Copper streaked vitreous tile
    -Large squarish metal beads
    -Metallic long petal beads
    -Flower beads
    -Round natural stone beads
    -Metal swirl beads
    -Small metal floral beads
    -Cogs, wheels and a clock
    -Small brown mini tiles
    I've added from my studio:
    -aqua colored mirror
    -fritballs
    -smalti
3:26 I switch out some of the flowers so it is more symetrical.
6:06 I add smalti to the mix. I look at two options and decide on the lighter one so there is more contrast.
7:33 It's grouting time! I've mixed up some black sanded grout. I give myself plenty of time since there is so much texture and height differences to allow for detailed clean-up.
10:35 The last step in this project is to open it up and line the box with some pretty paper. I've chosen two that I had on hand.
I'm not sure what I was thinking when I decided to smear the glue with my fingers, but then the lid got clogged and there was glue all over. Somehow I wrangled it where it needed to be and was able to clean up the rest! CAUTION: This was messy and there is probably a better way.
13:29 I cleaned up the excess off of the box with a wet wipe before it could set up.
That's Putting It Together, Ep. 198. Thanks for watching! See you next time.

Fabulous! I laughed when you added, "don't try this at home." To late!! 😂 Sometimes finger painting with Weldbond is the answer. ❤

The Smalti really pulled it all together! Love it. You have inspired me to mosaic a trinket box of my mother's, which I was going to sand and revarnish. 💕

It was amazing to watch you as you reformed your way around this beautiful box. Frequently that is how I do my mosaic work because every time I try to follow a pattern I get frustrated and it never turns out well. Thank you for the inspiration and also the courage to try things a little differently sometimes.

Oh thank you! I let the materials inspire me based on color and size. I tried to evenly distribute them in general and knew I didn't want it totally symmetrical.

I had the same problem with Prep Multihesive, which is an Australian adhesive, which is great as it dries clear but is not water soluble, but the tiny bottle I had it dispensed into went wacko. So for the first time, I decided to put it it in a dish and and dip the glass tessera. So you learn something new every day. 😊❤

Sometimes I dip pieces. Usually if they are tiny and I'm using tweezers.

Not sure about the contrasting upper version of paper choice because the box gives me this fantastic male sense who would buy it, and the lighter colored paper would throw me. But of course, you do you.🤓 Fantastic work.

Thanks for the honest feedback. It is definitely lighter and a bit more floral looking, but I like that it pulls in that turquoise without being the main focus.

Did you seal the mosaic? And if so, what did you use? Thx

😂 Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. Even if it means making a bit of a mess. Those lighter turquoise pieces definitely made a difference. 🤎
