  • Ep. 106 THE ART PLACE COMMEMORATIVE MOSAIC'S LAST PIECE, Bitty Sunflower Mosaics, Plus More Millie!
    I start this week with a micro mosaic pendant. I use a combination of glass stringers, glass rods, filati from Di Mosaico, and hand-pulled filati. I am using a sterling silver plated bezel from Amate Studios and black Apoxie Sculpt for the adhesive. First I etch a simple sunflower using tweezers and then I tweeze the bits in place until it is filled in! The middle was the most difficult part as I had a hard time seeing what I was doing.
    Then I head to The Art Place in Marietta, GA to wrap up piecing the Commemorative Community Mosaic! I have four volunteers helping me use the pre-cut pieces to fill in the white background. YAY!
    Back home in my studio, I work on the finishing touches for The Lemon Queen. I paint the edges and back gray to give it a clean look. Then I wire the back for hanging and add my signature.
    Next I step outside and pull two threads of malmischiato filati for a future pendant. First I pull a mix of dark brown and purple. This will be used for the center of flowers. Then I pull a mixture of light blues for a pleasing sky tone. Back inside I get after another pendant, mixing in 24K gold smalti in copper and gold.
    That was fun, but back to business! I work on Millie until the head is finished. I did not get to the ears yet, but there's always tomorrow!
    BONUS: I show the progress on my geometric class sample project! It's all ready for a grout demo next week!

      I try! What you don't see: me setting up, me on my laptop, me ordering supplies, me driving around picking up supplies/artwork, me taking a nap on the couch in my studio, etc. I try to keep it interesting.

    The intricacy of those pendants is amazing!! And I never see you use my most critical element: bandaids!

      Lol! Bandaid on left forefinger while working on Millie as I cut it quite badly while digging around in my studio for my filati pulling tools. Hard to see since it’s sped up!

      Depends on what is on there. Weldbond just needs water to clean it up.

    To create Filati, does it matter what glass you use? I think for fusing, the glass has to be compatible?

    • @mazzonimosaics8222
      @mazzonimosaics8222  Місяць тому

      I'm not an expert, but I did try making filati with COE fusing glass it was not as successful as using smalti. Once in a while I will get a strand that more or less crumbles using smalti, so it is not 100% reliable. Could be it cooled too quickly. Who knows?

      @@mazzonimosaics8222 , I am trying to find a class to learn how to do filati. I will be attending a Workshop in November with Mireille Swinnen (not sure if you know her?), to do a Jewellery Workshop. You got me inspired. I have had a go at making several pendants so far, but have purchased more bases to create more. It is expensive to purchase filati, between cost of product and postage. So making your own is the obvious choice. Thank you for responding. I hope you do not mind me commenting all the time? I am currently laying low with a virus and I found myself binge watching your You Tube videos. It didn't matter that I have seen them before. I find them mesmerizing! 💕Not to mention informative!

      @mazzonimosaics8222  Місяць тому

      @diannecrea7090 That workshop will be great with Mireille. Making your own takes gas, smalti and time. Not sure which is cheaper in the end.

      @@mazzonimosaics8222 that is a point! Yes, exciting year for Mosaics, as our mosaic association, MAANZ is holding this year's Symposium in Geelong, where I live. Mireille will be doing workshops there, but many of the international Instructors will be doing offshoot workshops around Australia. Mireille's will be held at Hann-Made Studios in Ocean Grove with Cheryl Hann-Woodlock as host. Do you know Cheryl?
