- Ep. 116 COMMUNITY MOSAIC MANDALA KICK-OFF, A Mosaic Vase & Starting a Smalti Mosaic for the Garden!
Organization is the name of the game when prepping for a community to work on a mosaic. I want everyone to never not have something to work on. Each mandala is color coded and I have separate bins for each color palette. Then I have the master box of glass that is all organized so I can pull from as needed to keep everyone supplied with the colors they need!
Also, my son is staying here and told me he will work on the vase he started ages ago. Then he makes an appearance to show us his work and plan for the last side. This is his third mosaic project since I started in 2009! He also helped with the sky on a community mosaic project.
Then I start a new mosaic! I made the sculptural substrates in a Pal Tiya class with Maria Sarmiento earlier this year. I start with the smallest, and will be using smalti, millefiori, & gold smalti. I am keeping it simple and they will be mostly blue! Then I mix up some black (pre-mixed with colorant) thinset, put it in a baggie to keep things neat and get started. I feel a bit out of practice since its been a while with the hammer and hardie, but I soon get back in the swing of things and begin to fall into a nice rhythm. Once my thinset has slaked, I start with a swirl set in a depression on the sculpture. The corner is snipped off, and I can squeeze it where I need it. I use my scissors to prevent it from rolling around on my work surface. I add in some bits of saturated red, pink and orange to give it some bright pops if viewed from closer up. In a few places, I split the line from one to two (sdoppiamento), which gives it a nice flow. There is one area I decide to redo. I still don't like it, so I will have to come back and fix it later as I am out of time today!
Back to my son's vase, and it is time to grout! He mixed up some custom grout with blue and green to blend with the base and pop as it goes up. Using a blue finishing rubber, he spreads the grout on all sides, then wipes off excess with a paper towel. After about 20 minutes away, he comes back with a soft cloth and buffs it. All finished!!!!
THE DAY IS FINALLY HERE!!! We are starting on the mandalas today, so I share the room set up. We have ten mandalas out with about 12 people working at a time. The other five are set aside. They each volunteer for a two hour session. It is such a lovely, relaxing time! This is my favorite part. The mandalas are so beautiful!!! I just love how they are coming together! I cannot thank all the volunteers enough! Six hours later we have really gotten off to a great start! They are so stinking sparkly already.
That's Putting It Together Ep. 116! Thanks for watching. See you next time!

your son has beautiful baby blue eyes, love to see roman be active in the community.
Would love to see more of roman in future videos, what a stud!
I know, right? Watch out ladies!
You continue to amaze me! Not sure how you do it all. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
Awesome mandalas! I particularly liked the green-and-orange one.
Great job Julie. Well-thought-out organization👏👏👏
It went very smoothly and everyone was busy the whole time!
How exciting to participate in a fun project. Nice work all. 💖💖🎶🎶
Thank you! 🤗 It really was nice!
Love to see Roman getting active in the Mosaic Art Community! Those baby blue eyes are adorable
Everything’s looking so good and your son did a great job on the vase as well. 😊
Thanks! He started it in 2020! I’m so happy he’s finished.
Wow, I just don’t know how you do it all! The community project is going great! Your son did a great job too! Looking forward to seeing what you do with the sculptures. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks so much!
Love the colors of the mandalas!!
Yesssssssssssss! They are looking fabulous already!
What a nifty idea (to mosaic a four-sided vase). They’re easy to find.
His idea!
You are so organized.
That’s the name of the game to keep everyone busy and moving forward!
Your son did a great job on the vase. Mandalas all look great too.
Thank you! Cheers!
I haven’t had any of my children create mosaics with me! You are on a winder to have at least one! I am a mother of 4 also!
Yes! I have two that have wanted to make mosaics. Not bad!
Actually, I lied. I was attending a mosaic Symposium and two of my daughters attended for a charity mosaic session. 💕
Fantastic!! The mandalas are already looking so good!!! Your Sons vase looks awesome too. I was actually a bit nervous for you cutting the smalti, you are just a pro!! So talented. Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Started watching asa u posted. It's incredible how you envision how you sculpture is going to look. Great start. Loved seeing you son - indeed a chip off the old block!!! I too have some glass vases. Guess will take them up some day soon. Community volunteers doing a great job on the Mandalas. Credit to you for creating the colour templates. Keep it up y'all 🙂
Thank you so much! The mandalas are looking so great! I want to go work on them non-stop, but then the community wouldn't have anything to do!

Awesome 😊
Thanks! 😊
Somehow, seeing all those volunteers coming together as a community, and the beautiful results, brought some moisture to my eyes. It's really going to be so great for those folks to see public artwork that THEY did. What a way to instill pride in a community and to possibly introduce creating art to folks❣
Also, I really enjoyed seeing your son & his project. Bravo! to him as well.
I was getting misty eyed at the very end. They really are beautiful! It's so hard to pack them up for a few weeks until the next session.
Yea… u r here… just started watching 😊
Good morning! Thanks for watching.
Great video! The sculptures look very different! When you first presented il admit I was skeptical. But I'm hooked after first swirl! I guess you need to have artists eyes!!!
Good luck on keeping your hands off community mandalas until next time!
Brilliant as always!
Glad you enjoyed it! I will have them on my table during class, so I might knock out a few of the trickier parts. They will be secondary to teaching, but if students want to work on them it will be an option.
Thank you for the video it helps to see how you use colour. I just wouldn't think to use some of the colours you use which make the others pop. 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Yes! Great job Julie! Wonderful organisation and the participants all look so happy. They are all going to look fabulous!
Thank you Carol! It is very relaxing to work on them. Art therapy!
Good job! Like always. Congratulations to your son. The community volunteers working and smiling so happy for their accomplishment. You are a great teacher. one question. Would please share what is the material you use for the white round Mandala art base ? Thanks.
Thanks so much! I prepped the substrates in Ep. 112: ua-cam.com/video/xUo4U79bfYU/v-deo.html
Mandala Project: How do tile around the hanger pieces? Do you use a 'temporary' type adhesive so you can remove the tile, hang, it and then place the tile back?
We just left the spot open until after installation. I did precut pieces to fit and had them labeled so it would go quickly.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 Thank you for the response!! You are great mentor.
You are beautifully organize for the community project. Kudos to you. Do you ever cut Smalti in any other way than with a hammer and hardy ?
Thank you! Yes, I use wheeled nippers quite a bit.
Have your volunteers been mosaicing before?
It was open to anyone. I had many of my mosaic students volunteer, but most people had no experience!
Hi Julie, is there any chance you could email me a copy of your Mandalas I so admire them but find them challenging to do. I run a Mosaic class in Melbourne Victoria and I’d love to use these for such. I can send you my email privately if you’d prefer. We are working on 30cm/12inch diameter circles. Hoping to here from you Libby
I'm sorry, they took me a while to make. I bought Adobe Illustrator, learned how to use it and designed them on there. An easier free program to use is MandalaKit. It's very user friendly. I used it to design the first three, but it didn't have enough flexibility when I made the last 15 designs. I sell the designs if you are interested.
@@mazzonimosaics8222 How much do you sell the designs for I’m looking for 30cm diameter size?
Can you DM me on IG or FB?
