  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #170!
People are always asking me if there are any ghost towns near Vegas. Unfortunately, because of rampant development in recent years, all the authentic old-timey stuff in the area has been bulldozed to make way for casinos and football stadia :-(
But, we do have this charming little fake ghost town down by Lake Mojave -- just 45 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip! Techatticup (also known as Nelson or El Dorado Canyon) is the site of a historic gold mine (which you can tour!), and the owners have amassed an extraordinary collection of old cars, trucks, busses, antiques and mining equipment, strewn about the grounds amid a gathering of old wooden shacks and buildings.
This is without question one of the coolest things to do within an hour's drive of Vegas, and it's FREE! I think they charge a nominal fee of around $20 if you want to do a "professional" photo shoot...but if you just want to poke around and take snapshots with your phone, all you have to do is sign a waiver inside the general store, stating that you won't sue if you step on a rattlesnake or a rusty nail. Good deal!!
You can book mine tours and find more information at their website: www.eldoradocanyonminetours.co...
    Check it out!

Hey Wonderhussy, the old Navy plane was a T-28 Trojan, manufactured by North American. It was used as a Navy Basic trainer from the mid 50's through the late 70's. I was a Navy Instructor pilot flying those planes out of Whiting Field in Milton, FL., just northeast of Pensacola, in the mid-late 70's. That particular plane was from squadron VT-27, based in Corpus Christi, TX.

Imagine restoring that Metro Delivery van and having the to go around the seers in. That would be big enough to be a small house! That would be killer with Wonder Hussy or the Hussey XPRESS on the side of it with a killer paint job or maybe not. Go patina style. Represent the desert!

That was the best one yet with all the equipment. Loved the old iron. That is a Manure Spreader at 27:00. You were right on the Model T Beer Truck. 1913-1927. Any old Truck with an IH on the Grille is an International Harvester, also involved in Farm Equipment in the '50's.
I could spend a day or 2 there with you.... Caddy with the Teardrop Trailer is early '60's.
Those Ford and Mercury Panel trucks and that Cab Over (engine) GMC are rare. Old Buicks with 'Waterfall' grille.
A very professional job of chopping the top on that black VW. 6x6 was fantastic, Diamond Reo Grille? Lots of others that you didn't get to. Those Honda 3 wheelers were deadly. Super job and super location. Thank You.

The US Navy T-28B Trojan (BuNo 140003) caught my eye due to the orange markings. Orange is used for high visibility, making tracking easier. The Navy paints aircraft slated to be target drones like this - an area I used to work with. This particular aircraft began it's life in the 70's as a Marine in Beaufort, SC - home of Paris Island training center. In the 80's it was transferred to NAS Corpus Christi, TX as part of VT-27. After that it had enough of the Navy life and transferred to the Air Force to retire in the quiet Nelson, NV desert. In the end the aircraft was sold for scrap, and rests peacefully at Techatticup.

  • @tacticalprepper9760

Not that you asked Wonderhussy, but the plane is a North America T-28 Trojan. It was a trainer. Lots of Sailors and Marines earned their wings in that plane and planes like it. Also, you look amazing in this video!

Great find, I've been there and will return next month while travelling from Vegas to Laughlin.
Next time out there go into the general store and check out the "Worlds Largest Rattlesnake" or something like that was caught near here.
Also, point out a couple of cool movies that have been shot here. They shot parts of "3,000 Miles to Graceland" with Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner (The "gas station" was blown up) and the part of "Breakdown" with Kurt Russell where he was driving down the road toward the river fighting with a "bad guy". They also sell DVDs of both movies .

That is an A-1. A really good plane developed in the 1940's and used well into the 1960's.
It takes massive balls to climb into a piston plane and fly into combat in the age of jets.
The motto of the A-1 pilots in Vietnam was, "So others may live." (they flew air rescue missions, protecting the helicopters used to rescue downed pilots.

The Willy's-Overland jeep you were showing was most likely manufactured in 1946. Willy's was contracted during the war to build what most people refer to as simply jeeps, and so often recognized as such. As a kid we had one out on the ranch. No key (for obvious reasons in wartime) and that thing was indefatigable in simplicity and reliability. Many were sent to Russia, along with a lot of other stuff, to support Russia's fight against Germany. I've read historical narrative where the Russians were amazed at how reliable the Willy's were. Amazed at the durability and simplicity. (for repair) Willy's/Jeep produced about 360,000 'jeeps' ending in 1945, at the war's end. The Willy's-Overland civilian (wagon, the one you have shown) came out following the war.

We had one of those International Vans for years. My dad converted it into a camper, hunting van. He bought it as a bread truck. He put seats and benches in it that you could sleep on. There was a propane tank mounted on the back for a heater, gas lights and cook stove. I have many great memories of that van. I would consider buying one of them back when I was younger, but now I would just buy a conversion van.

No way!! I have absolutely been to Oktoberfest in LaCrosse, WI. Lots and lots of drunken midwesterners. There were tons of immigrants from Europe that moved to that area, especially from Germany and Norway. I grew up in that area, across the river, and a lot of places have a heavy and authentic European vibe. There's speculation that there's a serial killer that targets drunken young college-aged men attending Oktoberfest since they keep disappearing and ending up in the Mississippi, year after year. Anyways, a very cool find out there Techatticup!

Just ran across your entertaining stuff, you are hilarious. Minor correction, a Willys Wagon is NOT a "woody." "Woody refers to the old wagons actually made of wood, stopped in the early '50's I think. Something like a 48 Ford was a real woody. Certainly not the fake wood trim "as made fun of" in the "Vacation" movie "family truckster" which by the way was an incredible crush of 70's and 80's American cars.
