Camping at Slab City for New Year's Eve

- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #180!
Spent New Year's Eve at this ginormous squatters' encampment waaaay down south in California, in a godforsaken corner of the desert just across the Mexican border. This is one of the last places in California where you can live for free -- a demolished military base, with only the concrete slab foundations remaining, upon which squatters have built haphazard shanties and dwellings where they have lived for DECADES, in some cases! Many of the inhabitants are sketchy addicts...but an equal number are free-thinkers, artists and off-gridders who just want to live somewhere unburdened by the b.s. of suburbia. The people I encountered here were without exception kind, creative and generous...and I will not hesitate to go back. These are fringe-dwellers...in other words, MY PEOPLE :-)
I’ve watched just about every slab video there is and Slab Vids are what first got me interested in a nomadic style life. I’m a way older woman, but I’m very young at heart and no one has shown this side of slab like this. Thank you wonder Hussey! I am a regular keep them coming.
Leonard Night R.I.P 1931 - 2014 83 years old when he pasted on. Slab City was his life's work.
You are NOT a freak. You are an amazing lady and your work is incredible. Keep up the good work. We love you!
So glad you are here!
Wow! This was a trip of a video, even though I have watched it before! 😁 Totally love the part of burning your intentions! Look where you and your sister are now! Being 2022 as I rewatch this my mind is blowin'! You are an inspiration and thank you so much to what you do for us fans! Keep on truckin! And be safe my friend ❤
I really dig your consideration and respect for everything and everyone you encounter on theses adventures... very cool.
Your such a good person, love your resolutions.
I’ve seen so many damn videos on slab city but this is the first time I’ve ever seen someone actually explore the incredible artwork that exists there...I’m awe-struck, this is amazing!
lol, in my 43 years on this earth I have yet to meet any woman that is into the nice guy. I took my daughter to Salvation Moutain back in 2015, we checked out slab city. We loved it. I just wish I would have gone when Lenard was still alive. Also in the 43 years on this rock I have read 2 books, Into the wild was one of them. Thank you for this video and all your videos
Looks incredible, a lot like an acid trip! 😎 Cool
You are the one person who showed the place with the right eye.....art, people, love, kindness....and you make me want to travel and experience more. Thank you.
I like how you explore but also give a little history of the place. Been enjoying your adventures. Keep up the great work.
I'm watching this 4 1/2 years after it was made.
It appears that your affirmations made on New Year's Day, came due fruition. Perhaps your kindness and consideration for others all of this time couldn't help but make for successful UA-cam channel!
Best vid on slab city. I love your sincere appreciation for all sorts of humans. Thank you.
I’m an Aussie and I’ve only just come across all this salton sea stuff and I’ve been watching video after video of this stuff so interesting
2005 Charlie gave me a ride across the playa (burning man) in his bus. We would stop random strangers and he would hop out around the back of his bus and serve martinis. One of those life memories sitting inside the bus looking at all the crazy art inside...everything was lit up like a christmas tree from head to toe...inside and out. It was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.
Charlie was the man who spread love to everyone around him. He is missed.
Helicopter ejection seat, wow never saw one, hahaha
Kindness and sweetness. What a cool goal. I'm in.
Hi Wonderhussy ! I just love your videos. bringing in the New Year at Slab City was an excellent video. love your smile and the interesting places you always find along your travels. Always be safe.
This was beautiful! I hope to get there one day. You are a great guide. I love how respectful you are. It is so awesome you met Leonard 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
These videos are so cool, if I had the the money, and time, and good working truck I would go exploring old wreck sites, and things of that nature.
And I so would join you!!!
I love seeing all your adventures! Thanks for taking us on your journey!
Thanks Sarah Jane for helping my vocabulary, for example "detritus"Love your attitude, and spunk. Safe journey.
Yo! I was there when u were there! I help train Slabbers to reverse heroin overdoses and I distribute Naloxone for free. Great place and sweet community, always give back something when you visit if you can.
As a heroin addict 5 and a half years along in sobriety, my heart is overwhelmed with love and mad respect for what you guys do! THANK YOU! 💙💙💙
I love how you keep your mind open to every situation. Thanks again for providing such interesting content. And I also must thank you for distracting me from going through the months long death of my mom. The dream that now I can find a way to get away a do a little of what you do is keeping me going. This has been the saddest and hardest year in my 48. But I might just get through one more. My birthday was 1/15/1970 so I made it though the most recent and worst. You have sent many kind words my way so thank you
When I first found you a few weeks ago I told you the story about how I found Slab City and you told me that you’d been there before and posted it to your channel. So I’ve been watching your videos in sequence from the beginning in 2017. I want the full story of Wonderhussy. So finally, here it is, your Slab City episode! I love how you ended it by emphasizing kindness as your favorite quality, mine too. I created my channel to emphasize how beautiful fun, adventure and music is for the whole world to see.
So this is when you really introduced your trademark American flag glasses, cool.
So you first started going there in 2009 which is around when I started going down there regularly from San Diego. I started my channel in 2014 and started posting stuff from the Range shortly after that. I’d been filming down there since 2006 but hadn’t caught any footage at the Range till 2011. I was using a Panasonic camcorder and now I use a Sony camcorder. I like the versatility of the camcorder as opposed to a phone. Plus the audio is much better.
You see so much stuff on UA-cam about Slab City now, it’s cray cray. I really liked the way you did your tour of the slabs. I actually met the people in the tank too and they gave me a tour inside. I even got to go up top and hang out. Got footage of all that. Also filmed the celebration when they had all those art pieces displayed in live action. I’m guessing it was kind of like a mini burning man.
So I’m at about 180 episodes into Wonderhussy’s extravaganza (what should I be calling them anyhow, episodes, videos, clips, segments or what?… I don’t know… so I’m just gonna call ‘em episodes) and I think you’re getting up to about 800 ‘episodes’ now so I gotta little ways to go. But I can’t tell you how happy I am to be sticking to my guns to watch from the very beginning cause I’m really enjoying thisride on the Wonderhussy express!
Plus it’s nice to go back to a time before Covid and everybody wearing masks.
I dont know why people write her these long commentaries for she never responds probably doesnt even look at them cause i cant remember seeing her comment or acknowledge anyone in her comments
@@CaesarB227 I know. But people like you do read it and get back to me, so I appreciate that. You have to admit, there’s a ton of comments, I don’t see how anybody could field all of those. Thanks for your input
I really appreciate you sharing your “ WONDER .” I look forward to all your videos. I lived in the Mohave desert for 5 years and really loved it. You find places that I never took the time to check out and wish I had.
This is the best video I’ve seen on Slab City. THANKS MUCH and keep exploring and sharing!!!
You’re doing a great job. You have a wonderful heart ,mind and soul.So glad that I found your channel .

@wonderhussy I so am digging what you're planting about continuing to be amazed by this world. Peace and all that. See ya down the road...
At 19.50 u talk about sweetness & it struck a chord. When I was 17 (1972) a lovely blonde girl, Jean, wanted by all the tough guys, but she only wanted me, saying 'I like Alan, he's sweet'. Alan, UK.
Absolutely LOVE your videos!!!
You do a fantastic job at showing life as it is... awesome footage wander on, be safe
Yes! The word detritus makes a DRAMATIC COMEBACK! 🤣🤣

This was the greatest documentary that I’ve ever watched! Great job! You’re an amazing gal!
I just found this video and videographer in October, 2019, and while I'd seen glimpses of Slab City... WOW, what an interesting place, and fun, articulate tour guide. Living in the Pacific Northwest, I could use some steady sunshine in January. Thanks for the adventure, Wonderhussy!
You are a great person! I’ve come to love your video’s. Thanks!
Great video! You have gone to so many places that I planned to go to 20 years ago. Made to some of them, but not most of them, glad you did.
You are a truly refreshing, conscious and noticeably unique human - a true treat. Thanks a lot for the wonderful tour including the very intelligent and captivating narrative. Many Blessings to you !!!
I can't wait to visit slab city. If they are happy that is what count. some of the artwork is amazing and a lot of thought and work goes into it....enjoyed the video...thanks
Another fine video Miss Hussy ; ) Thank You
WH I'd say that you have been living up to your affirmations for as long as I have followed you. Anyway, thanks for another very entertaining video!
Enjoy your video you did a good job. I've been to Slab City but couldn't stay too long I stayed about an hour walked inside Salvation Mountain and saw the water tanks and some of the art. But I got to see more of it in your video so thank you.
Nice tour. Thanks for sharing and commenting all about there.
Great video! Thanks Wonder Hussy!
I've seen dozens of Slab City videos, but I think that yours is my favorite, (or very close to it). A couple of interesting interviews with some of the locals could have made it 'The" Slab City video to check out. Fine job none the less, and a great contribution towards your New Years goals! Thanks!
What an amazingly wonderful place! Too cool.
Thank you for an awesome video while you didn’t feel very well. See you in the next video.🐢
Your attitude to life is inspiring.

What an interesting place! I absolutely loved this video.
Beautiful video, nice to see the picture of Chris McCandless in that mountain, think its the same of Kesha's video Praying. Hope all your wishes come true this year, Wonderhussy !. Kisses.
Best tour of slab city yet !
Good video, good 2018 resolutions. Thank you!
I love your videos miss beautiful free spirit. You've went to and given me the locations to a lot of places that I could have no way of found on my own. I plan to go on a very long road trip and visit a lot of them very soon. I appreciate you and what you do. Keep up the good work! ;)

What a coincidence, I was in Slabs for New Years too! The Range on New Years Eve was so much much.
you guys shoulda hookedup dude!!
@@twotmongler2027 The one and only time I've seen Wonder Hussy in person was at an event in Nevada called Underground. However, I was too nervous to say hello lol. I look back on it and regret it.
Wonderful Video from a beautiful and already kind and warmhearted woman! Keep up the wonderful work. You definitely deserve a bigger UA-cam audience.
P Kerfstok
Wish we coulda seen some action New Eve, but the New Year burning strikes a primal chord in me, and you, also it seemed.
Great vid. I really need to visit.
Fantastic video WH! Certainly asks the question; why do we have to pay, to just take up space? You are 100% correct concerning the Confederate Stars and Bars.
I'm not so sure about the flag. most people now have no clue what it is. see my comment on her flag comment.
Davidautofull , it's St. Andrews Cross, is what it is.
Abandoned Teddy Bears, that's kind of nice they can hang out together with all of the other unwanted rejects. Much better than being alone. Would've had no idea this place had some positive things going on after seeing a couple of other videos. Like it a lot.
Always admire you. You are an inspiration
