Get yourself 3 things for your kitchen:
1. Crockpot slow cooker,
2. Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer
3. Grill... doesn't have to be anything fancy, you can even build a wood fire in a charcoal grill.
These will make meals way better, especially when you run low on propane.
If you can afford it, there's an invention called Zero Mass Water... it makes clean drinking water from the air, and you can plumb that into any kind of water tank or storage tote or whatever.
Also, cheap solar lights can make your trip to the outhouse a little less eerie.
Noted! I appreciate that. My friend gave me a smoker recently (Trager) and I've been using that to make big amount of meat to eat for days.
@@GhostTownLiving Yo the traeger is the best and it’s so brainless, everything that goes on there is perfect. I have one and my family uses it all the time.
An air fryer is really versatile and can usually replace an oven (in my experience) for smaller goods
@@nda3413 Yes, exactly right. The Instant Pot I mentioned has both the regular pressure cooker lid AND the air fryer lid, both are removable. So you could pressure cook, say, a frozen chicken breast, swap lids to the air fryer lid, and crisp up the skin as if you baked it in the oven... in less than 10 minutes. There's a ton of videos for recipes & how-to's right here on UA-cam. 🙂
@@GhostTownLiving Really research Zero Mass Water before even thinking it'll work. The channel Thunderfoot has a video breaking down the math on it.
If possible, I think a Halloween video on the history/creepy nature of the town at night would be really cool.
22:20 ; It is a practice cartridge for a 40mm 'High-low propulsion system' aka a 40 MM grenade launcher. Its solid inert aluminum, so people can practice without blowing themselves up. Plus a solid slug is cheaper and easier to produce without all the explosives, primer, and other fun stuff they'd have to put in there. That's a neat (modern) find!
just a tip, to prevent fires pick up glass and bottles you find in the wild especially in the dry brush as they can act like a magnifying glass.
You should get a metal detector and go around Cerro Gorrdo. Imagine the finds!
If you find small pieces of newspaper that aren't museum worthy you could put it in little frames and sell them online. I would absolutely love to buy a 5" x 7" framed part of CG!

@grażyna pies Well, I'd have to assume that any water around the place is not exactly that safe, considering it is a mining town.
I know there is power to the town but he did say there have been power outages so maybe a solar station or windmill to generate some backup power in cases of an emergency.
@Esco Moz he could also sell all the scrap metal he finds, depening on how far the next scrap yard is.

agreed. simple living and being self-sufficient. a nice community feel as well. my only worry and always has been about moving remotely is just being able to get adequate medical care in emergencies (not for myself necessarily but my family).

I'm now officially addicted to your channel! I know what I would do if I were you: I'd be planting trees for both shade and windbreaks and I'd also begin construction of tourist cabins making use of all the rocks!
you should definitely consider turning one of the more run-down buildings into a greenhouse! it would be a super nice way to get produce even during the winter months
You need a lot of water to grow produce in the desert, and his only source is a small seep 750 feet underground. It would be pretty irresponsible to build a greenhouse.
Israel makes deserts green by capturing the water in the air, which is what a cleverly built greenhouse would do without frying the plants. It can be done. Naysayers be damned.
My first thought, when I started watching his videos. I'd probably start with a mushroom farm in the mine. Champignons don't need any light at all to grow. But I don't know, which conditions they need in terms of temperature and humidity and how much power would be needed to power it.
@@imiloa. you can only capture moisture in the air if it's a humid area. Cerro Gordo is dry desert.
If the watering system is even half-smart, it is doable.
- Using tubing that go straight to the plants or their roots so that only the immediate vicinity of the plant is wet, he can use much less water when compared to just spraying the water willy nilly everywhere. Add timing system that drops water little bit at a time so the water doesn't go to waste.
- Use only flower pots or similar (plastic is better, allows evaporation only from the top soil) that have minimum size possible for the roots, too large pots means he would need more water to keep the soil moist.
- Select the plants with the water usage in mind so avoid the most heavy water using plants.
- Also, rainwater is one option but he has not utilized it as he has had an aim for clean drinking water and rain water cannot be used for that (he has stated this in one of his videos). With out filtering at least. So if he would put rain gutters to the roofs that drain into a large tank, he could drastically increase his usable water reserves.. We have used this to reduce using water from our well.
- Seal the greenhouse decently so the evaporated water doesn't immediately get lost to the outside air. Imo, actual purpose built greenhouse is better for this reason.
I would at least try with some small scale experiment, then decide after seeing how it goes. Obviously without some serious effort, he could't go self-sustainable with it but it would at least increase his food variety. The climate is so harsh at winter that i highly doubt if growing anything during winter is possible. Lack of light is not the problem, it's the cold. With enough cheap electricity perhaps but he has only limited access to electricity.
Greenhouse would definitely be possible but could require more work It is up to him to decide if the effort is worth it...
You need to make a feeder to hold the hay off the ground for your goats. Goats are suseptible to parasites that come out of the environment, when you feed off the ground and the hay touches their poop, the worm larve in the poop can contaminate the clean food and infect them. You should also be checking the lower eyelids of your goats every few weeks. This is called a FAMACHA check. Look it up if you don't know how to do it. If their lower lid is light pink or white inside they need to be dewormed. If you don't keep an eye on this, they can die from anemia from the parasites. Both of these are pretty important to do if you want to keep your goats healthy.

Nothing depressing about those meals at all in my mind. When I go backpacking I always try to eat the best thing that I have in my pack first. No sense in saving it, that way you will always be eating the best thing you have in your pack. If the best you can make is beans, rice, and eggs......then you are still eating the best food you have. it's a good mental trick for practicing appreciation
And you can do alot of delicious stuff with not many ingredients. Minimalistic food tastes was better than any gourmet stuff if you put some heart in it. Most of my Camping Trip meals just consist of Ramen with some Veggies and Eggs. Its great!

That’s a 40mm “203” round from either a m4 with the 203 launches or a MK19 or maybe from a c-130
Dino Dad nailed this. The blue is called a "blue body" and is used for most practice rounds (ammunition) to provide a realistic firing experience for the trainee. The other training round is an orange "paint" or powder round that works almost like a paint ball that shows the trainee the hit markers. I am actually surprised to see this on your video, especially if it is a military training round and they are striking your private property. Contact the nearest Air Force Base (or which ever service you have knowledge of training nearby) Range Safety Office and tell them what you have found so that they can adjust the limits. If it is a one off thing, no big deal, but if more training rounds hit your property, this could be a potential hazard for you.
I’m loving watching your vids during this covid nightmare.....perfect escape.
Thanks man.

Please be care with the space heaters, I'd rather not repeat the American Hotel.
Was thinking the same thing. My family and I had a barn/shop burn down along with puppies inside due to a similar device.
THIS. Please, don't use this type of space heater. My family owned a 16th century castle here in Germany and it burned down to the ground completely, 30 years ago. Couldn't be rebuilt. High power draw + old wiring + cats that like to snuggle up close to warm things & could tip it over = bad idea.
I was concerned with that as well, maybe he could look into getting one of those solar-powered generators? I saw a portable one that wasn't outrageously expensive. A lot of van lifers or RV people use them. Then he could get a safer heat source and not worry about faulty wiring either. Just an idea for a solution.
Could probably just use a smoker far from the house and heat water with wood chips/old wood. Double it as a meat smoker and make beef jerky as a side product for mine exploration/sale.
In Ohio, a lot of older farm homes use something similar and they tend to work better than furances in -10°F.

I’m sure others have already pointed this out but you’re right on with that grenade round that you found. It’s a dummy round often called a Cheeto bc it produces orange smoke instead of exploding. It’s more than likely from a 203, an underbarrel attachment of an m4 or m16 rifle

That's not a chalk round, is it? I thought chalk rounds were completely frangible.
Correct to some degree. They're from a MK-19 launcher. The rounds that come out aren't chalk and have a small "explosive" every 6th ? round in the belt. (Which is why some of them look different than the others).

Having goats and cats as pets, having a whole town for yourself, living in the mountains, does life get any better than this?
It's very close to the best possible life for many, me included. It's some practical things that's not so good, though. Where do you get rid of garbage? Water, sewage, power, proximity to shops, and so on. If you need an ambulance it would take forever, so don't have an emergency. Internet? It seems like Brent has it, but it's not a given out in the desert. Most of us would adapt to all of it, I'm sure, but especially the medical emergency part has steered me to something in between.
I'm figuring out how to move out to an old farm homestead somewhere not to far from civilization, not run down too much. I'm handy enough, but having the big things like water, sewage, and power, makes everything 10 times easier.
It's dirt cheap for such properties here, compared to apartments in the town I live in. 2000 sq ft house in need of some tlc, a 3000 sq ft barn, usually a small patch of grain field, and 100 acres of forest, costs about the same as a 370 sq ft apartment. I'm keeping my eyes open, and give it a few years of preparing for a big move.

A note about your sledgehammer swinging form: You'll be able to swing harder for longer and be less prone to injury if you pick it up with your right hand right below the head (and your left hand exactly where it is) so your hands are at opposite sides of the shaft as you lift. Then as swing it up and the head approaches the top of the arc, allow your right hand to slide down and simply let the falling weight of the hammer do the work--all your right hand does is throw the hammer into the air then aim where it lands. You definitely don't want to throw your back out up there, bud!
