Watching this on a TN. So confused by what I'm supposed to see.
you're funny guy..
+Imano Santoso P HES A FUNNY GUY
I watched it on my Panny ST60 55 in Plasma, i'm certain of it myself, hahahah.
Nick Li
watch it on your mobile
LG OLED... you can see *EVERYTHING*
I changed my mind on which is better about five times during this video. By the end, I'm indecisive again.
I read the comments and changed my mind several times more. Why is this so difficult?!
RochRich ikr?
Go for the IPS, belive me bro, you wont regret.
I got the IPS one and I couldn't be happier.
I have another ASUS Monitor as a 2nd Monitor (1080p 144hz) but it's a TN.
And the difference in image quality is night and day.
Also, the IPS one is much more pleasant to look at. The TN makes your eyes kinda tired after some hours, th IPS feels always so "light" for the eyes. Just belive me.
The responce is basically not noticable between the two.
MAYBE when you're a PRO player and play in big Arenas in Kora, MAYBE then you gonna choose another one.
But even then. This thing is extremley fast.
I love everything about this IPS monitor.
@@d4rkann749 Yet the input response of the PG279Q is still faster than his TN brother according to indipendent tests, but ye, go for the crappy TN and think about me in a few years when you regret it ^^
@@d4rkann749 Here 5:23 there you go, IPS is still faster lmao
Watching this on a 30 year old CRT monitor.
They look alright I guess.
@Mateusz Gruszka yes it is Black as black can get on a crt and 100hz sometimes
xD
@hudzz man i don't wanted to be racist i just wanted to describe how nice crts color accuracy is
Until your cat falls asleep on top of it.
😂😂
This video just helped me exactly 3 years later! Been trying to upgrade and build a new pc for the first time and have been researching between these panels. I greatly appreciate the help!
*correction: PG279Q does not support 3D vision & the labels are the wrong way round for the sRGB graphs (oops!)
+The Tech Chap TV Just a heads up, your links in the description are the wrong way
+David Forshaw lol
+David Forshaw Shhh thats for marketing strategys xD
+The Tech Chap TV yea, you messed that up. I just wrote a comment about that part, then saw this post. Nice review anyway. Though, once you go away from TN, there is no going back to those horrible viewing angles. The bigger the panel, the bigger the issue.
+Ludak021 well as i am the only one at my pc tn is fine on my Acer xb270hu and i don't play on an angle i have had ips and i hated the light bleeding through so i am very happy with my 1440p 144hz monitor.
Thank you so much for this side-by-side review. It was exactly what I have been looking into to decide between. I ended up going with the TN. I really wanted the colors of the IPS but I'll be using it 100% for gaming and got the TN at a super low price.
Which settings can I chamge to avoid eye strain and headaches on my new IPS panel after I've had TN panel for years without any headaches??
Thank you for confusing me more.
White people man..smh if it was a black guy explaining he would be "TN got glare" "IPS is clear" "TN gets you headshot"

probably the best review of products ever made! covered all the matters that concerned me and explained them with examples and in detail...thanks!
You've answered all my IPS vs. TN questions at high refresh rates ... I know what to get now, thanks. For anyone else on the fence, I own a Samsung 144Hz TN monitor and if you sit lower in your chair or the monitor isn't at eye-level it causes anything from color distortion to not being able to see your game because it's too dark. I will not be purchasing another TN for myself.
This is an awesome comparison! THANK YOU!
+urbanelemental thanks!
Wow you dont know how long i looked for those informations! You are awesome, and were of great use. Thank you!
Awesome comparison video! Thank you for helping me decide!
My PG279Q has spoiled me. I can never go back to a TN screen ever again. IPS is amazing.
+Anorax same here!
+Frisson can u not get 1ms with ips?
+Nolan Thomas The Asus PG279Q is officially rated at 4ms G2G. But unless you have superman eyes it is unnoticeable during normal gaming. The technology built in to this IPS screen makes it irrelevant. The advantages far outweigh any G2G loss and this screen will make you re-think why you ever used TN in the first place. Here's an excellent review which explores in detail G2G measurement on this screen - www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/asus_rog_swift_pg279q.htm
why though frisson... you wont be able to tell a ms differnece will u? theres 1k ms in one second soooo
+Frisson The guy in the computer store told you that didn't he. Best to judge for yourself. ;)
Nice, very well done, the video is informative and fun to watch at the same time, at least for me 😊, keep up the good work 👍
+Ahmed Maher Thanks very much Ahmed!
Great review with a good delivery pace. Thank you!
Tnx man, your videos are very informative and on point. You deserve way more subs.
I liked the video, still in doubt what to pick though :)
"Can produce richer whites"...yep...but both of these can produce 800-900€ poorer people too.

Black levels matter ALOT more, imo
Awesome video, good explanations on different and demonstrations were good so I can see the difference and make a decision. I was looking for to do both gaming and video editing!!!
Still bought one IPS and one TN monitor, so I can play on the IPS and watch porn on the TN monitor
its the opposite way bro

great review. Prior to viewing this video they sent me, I pretty much told them what you were showing on the video. Kudos to doing a very relevant and thorough comparison.
Just came across this video and watched it. Absolutely loved the review ans definitely subbed to your channel. Keep up the good work!.
I dont know why but you really remind me of Tom Hiddleston. You can also play loki if you had longer hair haha
It’s him and he is confusing us even more
great review! there was just one thing I wish you had touched on more, you really didn't talk about whether or not the 1ms pixel response on the TN had noticeably less motion blur
than the 4 or 5ms on the IPS panel, I would also be very interested to know how much of a difference there was at high and low refresh rates. .
I see this review is from 2016 but I would still be interested to here your thoughts on my above questions if it is still something you remember. thx
Thanks man for the nice review and comparison , I'm going with TN as i found it on amazon for 460 quid :)
Thank you for the comparison, was looking for it .
This video is fantastic! Thank you very much!
+Sam Stevenson Glad it was helpful! :)
+Sam Stevenson Then why on earth would you wanna buy or even look at a review for these monitors?!? in order to benefit from these monitors, you'll need a GPU that will cost you pretty much the same amount that you paid for you whole build!!

Beautifully said! Well done review, found the analysis to be spot on. I have the Viewsonic XG2709-GS which is the same panel found in the Asus PG279Q, which is an AHVA panel from AU Optronics. It is the single best gaming purchase I've made in 25 years of PC gaming.
Great comparison, thank you for that!

Just bought the ips one. It's amazing.
Extremely informative, I'm going to buy the TN-version of this monitor.
y porque el tn y no el ips ?
refreshingly good, precise, on point.. review/comparison..
Thanks! Very helpful breakdown.
PG278Q is an excellent monitor. 1440p @144hz is wet dreams of a gamer.
+ the Gsync :)
I have to agree, 1440p and 144hz are just awesome, but G-Sync/FreeSync is really overrated. It's a nice bonus but nothing more. (Or maybe it's because I never cared about tearing)
FeelsBadMan
Yea true that if tearing isn't a focus area to improve for a gamer then its irrelevant to pay for:)
But imo Gsync is too expensive.
they released a new version of the PG278Q with the PG278QR with 165hz
yea Asus had to remove PG278 from the market since too many with errors (I had to return mine and got a new one with issues also).
PG278Q might be found without issues, but it was the 1st one with Gsync in 1440p and 144hz, so I suppose it was rushed out too early for marketing reasons.
I have the TN and I love it!
porq te encanta x los colores o por la velocidad
Perfect review mate, thanks a bunch
Thank you so much for this very good explanation on the monitors and I will go for two Asus PG279Q as soon as I got the money for those :D
I wasn't in the market for a new monitor, and loved my Acer Predator XB241YU but after watching some videos and researching IPS, I ended up getting a Gigabyte M27Q, which spec-wise is nearly identical, slightly better response time, 5hz faster, 3 inches bigger, but most notably, it's an IPS display, which OMG it looks so much nicer, whites are brighter, blacks are darker, colours pop more, and it just looks more realistic and isn't so washed out. I recommend IPS displays. In saying that IPS display don't have perfect viewing angles like people say, but it's better for sure. I'm a gamer and it's amazing especially on Fantasy, Sci-Fi or just generally vibrant games, but will look better on anything.
Which settings can I chamge to avoid eye strain and headaches on my new IPS panel after I've had TN panel for years without any headaches??
Thanks for the great reveiw i like y reveiw
Thanks for the explanation and demoing of both panel types
Thanks for this video. I've been avoiding IPS because I wanted a faster monitor. Turns out I've been missing out on a more pleasant picture for no reason.
I used an IPS 21.5" monitor for 2 years without knowing what IPS or TN meant. It recently broke and I have to use my mom's TN monitor while I get a new one. The difference is obscene. IPS has fantastic colors that look good at a much greater angle, great for viewing pictures, videos or gaming. TN looks washed out and cheap. If your video card can't run games at more than 60fps anyway I recommend getting a 60 Hz IPS panel over a higher Hz TN.
"it recently broke"
I've had a TN monitor for 7 years now.
nonsense.. all monitors display 16 million colors... if one seems more vibrant and vivid then turn up the saturation and gamma and brightness on the other.
Tyler Fox tn trash compared to ips
You need too see the difference i guess to realise how wrong you are. the amount of colors shown doesn't have anything to do with how strong they are or brightness and contrast. When your monitor is using 6bit and/or needs calibration, it will create banding on gradients. to cover up those gradients, dithering is used which can appear as noise in between supported colors. You might have to look close and sometimes at an angle to see the dithering. an 8 or 10bit monitor support more colors so they will have smoother gradients and less to no dithering needed to display that perfectly smooth cradient. A monitor with a greater gamut running colors outside the sRGB space will benefit greatly from a higher bit depth panel. since that will otherwise make banding in gradients more pronounced on a 6bit panel. While the graphics card may be set to send 16million colors to the monitor, it doesn't mean the monitor can display it. Just because the sun is shining bright in the sky doesn't mean it can shine through a tree. Thats why shadows exist.
Just like IPS panels, there are several different levels of quality on TN panels. I have an IPS dell monitor and a 144hz asus TN monitor and to be honest the colors are actually better on this TN panel, thats not to say there aren't IPS panels out there that are better, but just saying just because its IPS doesn't automatically mean its better.
I just want to throw in advice to anyone that wants to buy a TN because they think they won't care about the angle since you have to sit in front of the screen anyway. I thought this also but I quickly realized that I don't always sit just in front of the screen. I might slouch or lean back sometimes even sit a little more left or a little more right and you can visually see the difference in the picture quality when you are not dead center with your monitor. Not to mention if you want to show someone something on your computer they also wont see it the same way you are unless they sit in your chair. I now have an IPS and and I'm much happier with it because I don't have to worry about how I position myself in front of my monitor.
Arsenio Allison For FPS, is TN better? I never lean back while playing
practically speaking, that goes for VA monitor aswell.
for @Brandon Cosme then you would want a TN monitor as it has the best pixel response time (1ms) and higher refresh rate. but it wont very enjoyable for games other than FPS and something like LoL as it has terrible blackness.
yeah im trying to decide myself and my worry is having to constantly adjust my monitor as i go from sitting to lying down because i have my pc on the coffee table right in front of the couch in the living room. before you judge me dont act like you never thought about it and if you havnet at least thought of it i feel sorry for you lol
Having a good quality TN monitor can actually help with this though, my Dell S2417dg I believe the model number is, has really good angles for a TN display and has everything else I need, plus for me personally, I hate backlight bleed, so, yeah, I think each person is a bit different in some respects, to each their own though.
LMAO exactly, I also though that I was always in front of the monitor but in reality I’m not and it just looks amazing when I come back from the toilet and see nice colors when I’m walking towards the computer instead of seeing nothing.
Wow this was a great comparison and really helped me understand the difference in quality and viewing angle
THX Man this is the best explain i needed
IPS monitors FTW!
Currently trying the PG278QR and Acer XB271HU side by side. While the IPS makes for a slightly more immersive experience with slightly better color reproduction, especially the blacks, it also feels noticeably more sluggish than the TN. You'll here loads of people claiming that there is no difference but I'd say that it's down to the games you play. If you mainly play singleplayer games, or more casual multiplayer ones, I'd get the IPS.
If you're like me however, playing mainly online, fast paced FPS and somewhat competitive games: CS, R6 Siege, Overwatch, even Battlefield depending on your play-style, I found myself being relatively more bothered by the sluggishness and blur while using the IPS, more than I appreciated its improved color reproduction, making me gravitate towards the TN.
Very well explained. Good job mate. Thanks.
Well done . You listed every positive that i like about my Dell U3014 ( AH-IPS Panel ) and its few negatives. I never regretted paying the premium for it as for me a audio video enthusiast I am very picky when it comes to colors and accuracy. When playing games i want the best picture possible with in my budget. To me the LG AH-IPS panel in my Dell is just gorgeous to behold when it has a detailed and proper calibration. Besides the slight light bleed at the bottoms corners i love it and it performs A + . Great informative video my friend , well done.
I had the PG279Q, it got broken so I bought a PG278Q, and I eventually returned the 278Q as going from the vivid colours on the IPS to the washed out TN was too much of a distraction. They're both good monitors, but once you have the colours of IPS its like going back to 60hz from 144hz.
"with photoshop open.." *opens Lightroom*
I twitched a bit too
eyelid quivered and brain short circuited
great video, thank u so much
Thanks for this video really appreciate it 😁
I want both! It's far too hard to choose!
Had the option to get the tn version for $500 or $515 for the ips... I went with TN. I have used both TN and IPS in the past and even at 4ms ghosting is noticeable, though minor, compared to a 1ms TN. For gaming I feel TN is the way to go!
@Daniel Phung it's not faster... you don't understand... the technical part. Go play Mario!!!
very informative, thank you!
Great Video thanks going shopping of monitor tomorrow :)
I was thinking my IPS was too dark and I was trying to fix it, now I found out it is the accurate darkness, I was just used to the bright dark of the TN panel lol
Wait until you see oled panels lol, and IPS is known to have IPS glow/backlight bleed so your old TN panel must be horrible...
I was hoping that you could help me with my purchase. I'm thinking about buying PG279Q, but I really am scared of all the problems I'm hearing about. Especially when I'm going to buy it from Amazon and as an international seller.
Can someone tell me, if the blacklight bleed isn't horrendous like covering every corner of screen in huge areas, can I just stick with it? I mean is it going to bother me other than black screens? My laptop's screen had some backlight bleed on corners but I didn't get it replaced. It didn't bother me.
Another question is, I have a viewsonic IPS monitor, 1080 but with no backlight bleed whatsoever and very good color and image quality. Lucky panel I guess. Anyway, if I decide to go with PG278Q to avoid problems of PG279Q and save some money, will I be somewhat disappointed? I watch UA-cam and Netflix a lot.
look at amazon and newegg owner comments and ratings on recent vs prior purchases and asus has not improved QA on either motherboards or monitors but I still buy asus although its a crapshoot for evga, msi, acer, or asus- but they are the market leaders. just be ready to return stuff as a price we pay for all this technolgy
I just got the ips panel and so far I'm in love with it I upgraded from a msi optix ag32c to this asus monitor and what a difference
Thanks, Sheldon! Which dual monitor combination will you recommend me to pick: ViewSonic VX2776-SMHD 27 (IPS) or ViewSonic VX2757-MHD 27 (TN)?
I use it mainly for work that involves MS Office software, Airbnb level photography and websites. Occasionally, I may also use it to play, but given the bad graphics card that comes with Dell Optiplex 9020 (Intel Integrated Graphics HD 630, I think? Not sure), it would not be too fancy until I upgrade the graphics card myself.
Watching this video on a TN monitor.
Oh the IPS is really White.
Wait
I'm watching it on my TN
==> My TN monitor is good enough
165hz
oh look! theres whole 2 games you are gonna hit 165 fps!
+Z Not with 2 Titan xps
Yes, especially with 2 titan xp, pretty much only a few triple a games support and scale in sli, so theres gonna be little difference with 2 cards, and also it's a bit weird on it's game performance and the gtx 1080 is only 10 frames under it for nearly half the price so yeah.
Oh look I hit 240 fps on csgo with the 970 woooow the 166hz monitor is really useless now isn't it woooow dude wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.
I am not going to play games while i am sitting on the left side of the monitor.....
So a 144hz 1ms response time TN panel monitor is the winner here
You will notice the color shift of the TN panel due to its size, especially the vertical difference... it's just horrible.
not while you are gaming
UlTrApLeX I already noticed it on a 24 inch screen, a 27 inch is even more horrible.
The IPS has such immensively better colors, that you won't believe it until you have seen them in real life. I did and the TN version looked like a 10+ year old monitor POS compared to the IPS.
xXYannuschXx Which monitors are you comparing? model and brand...
Very informative video, thanks! Have you ever compared IPS vs. TN in terms of eye strain / eye comfort? I'm looking for a work/play monitor (more focused on work -- long hours of staring at text) and I'm not sure where to even start. TN seems to have faster refresh rates which should (in theory) be more eye friendly?
For me, the ips is better for long hours
Thank you Loki, very good review
im about to go from a cheap tn to an expensive ips. and from 1080 to 1440p, in soo excited
Nice, enjoy your new monitor :)
PcmrJewFox which did you get and are u happy with it after 10months?
To make right decission you have to choose between TN low angle and IPS glow effect, which of disadvantages is less crucial for you. The rest is not noticable at all.
Colours are very noticeable, and if its inlynfor gaming so are response time.
Honestly, if you only game, go TN, everything else is IPS or VA
Great review. Thank you
Excellent review. Helped me choose between the two. IPs works for me. Thanks.
I already have a PA248q so TN is fine for me ^^
I've always preferred TN over IPS. I find the blur very noticable, and IPS glow bugs me much more than TN colour shift.
Not a popular opinion, but I've used a lot of panels and I know what I like.
I love TN for what it is worth, especially because IPS is much more expensive.
Yes I completely agree. I upgraded from PG278q to PG279q, the IPS glow destroyed that monitor. I'll be sticking with the 278q for a long time.. Great monitor
I Agree, it's purely opinion, not what is better. The reason I went with the PG278Q is not because of price. It supports 3D and I have the 3D Vision Kit. Also I found out from my own tests that Increasing the refresh rate increases response time, therefore creating more ghosting(I hate ghosting, it's a terrible distraction, TN is the best way to stay away from it). Because Good TN Panels naturally have a 1MS response time, they can handle higher refresh rates better without creating as much ghosting. Problem with these monitors though, specifically is the bezel puts pressure on the screen causing the majority of the light bleed. There are ways to fix it. But I won't say as I don't want to be held responsible for anything lol.
I have my s2716dg TN and my ASUS pg279q in front of me right now and i can barely see the difference between the two with the right color calibration on my TN except the black and white. I just got mine today imgur.com/a/U2CAP
Obviously this is subjective but in general IPS destroys TN panel by FAR FAR.
Anyway I'm looking for the AOC g2460PG TN because is the only cheap I found. Difficult to find a 1080p IPS high refresh rate.
This was helpful. thanks!
Great video and I would go with the IPS because like you, it's a good allrounder.
If the input lag and ms is low enough, I'll go with the ips any day of the week!
After getting my first IPS monitor I would never go back. I can't understand how I was living with my older tn panel. I only use that as a second monitor now and I'm gaming on my IPS monitor, I don't really notice the higher response time so it's fine.
+Techsec but that tn you had was maybe so bad because its older and not because its tn, right
+Lars Willems I find a lot of people using this argument. Kinda reminds me of the Apple vs Microsoft argument. At first they will own a 300 dollar garbage Windows laptop, and then they will buy a 2000 dollar Mac, and say things like "ugh, I could never go back to that shitty Microsoft stuff". While if you were to spend 2000 dollar on a Microsoft Laptop, well, things wouldn't be so bad now would they. Same goes with this IPS vs TN, I believe IPS has great advantages and potential, but people are constantly comparing their old, maybe even cheap TN to their brand new IPS. Not a fair comparison I would say. The technologies are, as it stands, pretty comparable, just look at this video.
+imKORV Agreed 100 %
+imKORV totally true, people often they not even see any kind of new tn panel, sure ips is better , but first this monitor is ips -like, oem is auoptronics, an monitor is ahva, not ips wich is owned just by LG, and second in game doesn't seem this large difference, for sure for professional is better ips, but not this, other better ips
+imKORV well maybe you are right
Nice video, thanks. Could you do one for IPS vs VA?
Awesome video man, still very relevant 2 years later :D
Awesome video for showing the difference between IPS and TN. To me the IPS panel has very noticeable ghosting/blur especially in Fallout 4 and the colour difference apart from the blacks just don't seem to be there. TN panel all the way if you want to game on your monitor.
7:07 RIP Nvidia 3D Vision. I actually bought my kit a few months before they canceled the driver support :(
Big thanks for explaining this :-)
Hey man I really like your videos, professional and useful to everybody who loves tech and gaming.
I wanted to ask you a question: will IPS colors / 1ms response time be visible after you record a video? I mean you can only see the difference in person or the 1ms over 5ms and IPS over TN will change your recordings too? Thanks in advance c:
