IPS panels are getting insanely quick. But are they enough to beat TN @ 240Hz?
let me know your thoughts.
IPS can be fast enough, but that few ms of latency will trade off with colour accuracy for me. :)
hey bro, i loved this video. if you would like to improve your testing methodology - not to just check the response time with the ufo test, but measure it yourself - i would love to suggest some things to you. I'm a metrology person and could help you build a setup to gather more exact data on a budget. let me know if you're interested.
would love to see the review of the new alien ware 25 inch ips display. n
are you gonna try the Alienware 25" ips? or the HP omen 27" 1440p TN (which based on reviews has the lowest input time off all monitors in the market (maybe not including the zowie tho) :) also does Motion blur reduction works at 240hz?
I am going to give my take on this (bare in mind, it will be a bit long):
IPS can never catch up to TN in motion fluidity.
The reason is light. More precicly light reaching your eye.
When your eye recives a certain amount of light, the pupil will adjust in order to compensate. TN panels have shutters that will flat out close the light that goes to your eye if need be, meaning that ghosting will be less of an issue for people who have pupils that react a bit slower.
Personally, i have a very slow pupil reaction time (I am bearly within the limits to be able to drive a car, meaning getting my licence, because my eye takes a bit long to adjust), and I can see ghosting effects on IPS, Plasma TVs, even OLED tvs.
So, how does this work?
If the new scene is brighter than the previous one, ghosting is rearly an issue, but when the scene get darker, if the panel does not "block" the additional light that is dimming, your eye still recives enough light to create ghosting effects.
For anyone interested in testhing this themselves, i highly recommend the game "the vanishing of eathan carter" (either version is fine) as it is so realistic in the enviroment, that any ghosting can make it nausious to look at (as the brain belives you have been poisoned due to the unnatural mix with something that seems very natural).
I might have been a bit too simplistic in the explanation but basically, if a light bulb (or in this case a LED light that is creating the white light that is then filtered by the panel) is turned off, it will not INSTANTLY turn off. The residual energy keep the light active at lower intensity for a while, giving visual information that should not be there.
The reason this is so noticible for some people (and others a bit less) is because our eyes react a bit differently and a few miliseconds can be either not noticeable at all, or very annoying.
(plz check tft central for more information on panels, they are amazing at not only reviews but also explaining waht each measurement means).
The key element here is that if there is ghosting (even ghsoting that you cant actually see) the fluidity of the motion will be... worse. Not bad, just worse.
Of course this is my personal opinion and you would be smart to confirm anything I wrote instead of just believing it.
Edit: plz take a clsoe look (frame by frame) at time 2:58 to 3:00 right as tracer is pulse bombing there is clear ghosting effect (most visible at the hand of tracer throwing the pulse bomb)
They put the branding on the back so that when players are using these monitors at eSports events the logo shows when the camera pans over the stage.
How I did not think of that is beyond me. lol.
Props.

was gonna say the same thing.
but still, if the logo was some kind of a brand such as the MSI logo then it make sense but "Gaming Esports"? Did i miss something?
that's cool with me I guess. As long as I don't have to see that garbage when I'm sitting at my desk 😂

Man your high level tracer gameplay kinda distracts me from the video so i had to see this two times
who said that was him
@@WINTERGRIFT u didn't watch the vid do u? U can clearly see him playing tracer at around 1:45
The logo on the back for advertising at events, and the other light for reflection on your wall :D
I love that your actually good at the games you test on the esports side. Seeing a lot of other tests don't give me confidence in their experience or even if it makes a difference to them like the linus staff. But your actually good at Tracer amazing
2:20 companies do that so when you're watching a competition that's the part you'll actually get to see when they zoom in on the player.
I’m super glad that more 360hz monitors are coming out because they will make all the 240hz monitors cheaper which is fantastic.
Bro wtf, you're cracked at Overwatch?? What's your SR
Great video man. btw, @ 2:16 my guess is the logo on the back is intended to be showcased when broadcasting esports matches, e.g. CS GO. There're are a ton of shots of the players from the other side of the table, where all the setups are in full display.
You're my favorite youtuber and your vids are always exactly on points that I am interested in. Can you maybe run us through your software settings for gaming? Nvidia overlay, monitor overdrive, etc.? Keep up the good work!!
What a great review. Covers everything you would want from a monitor review, thanks Ali. Hope you do a review of the ROG Strix XG17 when it comes out. Have a nice day!
You're actually insane at overwatch also this whole review is phenomenal. Actually answered my question in this review, props 🔥
I wouldn't be surprised if he made this whole video just to flex his tracer play :3
ikr those pulse bombs are pretty damn good
Hopefully we will see improvements on VA painels too
Better response times and more options with 144hz
I love this. I want to make an arcade cabinet and finding the right monitor is a problem, but this is exactly what you would want for a cabinet.
i like how minimalistic and simple it looks from the front, it's clean
When doing these test, you should also test dark to dark color switches as that is the hardest part for ips va panels, almost all, if not all, va panels have trouble there and it depends on which ips monitor you are using.
Please make more of these great monitor reviews... those are just rare out there
Nice video bro, I'm always waiting on your videos review
Thanks for mentioning that this IPS was a review copy, hopefully the general market version will also be as clean with no bleed through.
Great content as always!
I really hope manufacturers will consider making 1440p monitors that are IPS with about 200hz refresh rate. That would be perfect for me at 25" or 27", plenty of games I have can handle that framerate/res with the settings lowered a bit. That would blend content creation and competitive gaming on one screen which is what I'm looking for.
I just can't have blur. Even in games like Tomb Raider and Fallen Order, I cannot abide when I pan across the horizon and the scenery turns into a big blur because of slow panels. I think one or two more generations and IPS will make TN obsolete though.
As long as IPS glow is still a thing, TN panels will never be obsolete.
@@cl4ssic Fair enough. Maybe OLED will come to save us all?
@@cl4ssic I have a "budget" IPS 144hz Acer Nitro monitor, and not only do I not notice blur, but I also notice no glow...and only 200 bones.
@@cl4ssic TN has been dead for years. Only people who buy TN are people who believe IPS glow is actually a thing on a high end monitor. It's not. Random bad luck back when xf270hu, xb271hu, pg279q, etc. came out but 99% of those were beautiful. IPS is so far superior to TN its ridiculous. Not sure why anyone would want to look at trash color accuracy. The only benefit to TN is cost.

Upvoted for the bomb (pun intended) Tracer gameplay and quality review!
What pun
Thank you for a good comparison!
Thanks i am waiting for this topic
I know this comment is a little late, but I rarely comment on videos let alone praise them.
Just wanted to let you know that this is an extremely well made video. Incredibly concise and to the point. Your experiments and analysis are also extremely well done and easy to understand.
Keep up the good work!
just a tip, @ 2:56 you can press melee before you blink to decrease the animation time. this would also result in the zen having less time to react e.g. use his ult
Im running an Asus 170Hz 1440p IPS 1ms panel rn. I love it! at 170hz it has some ghosting though, dropping to 165hz gets rid of that entirely though and is a pleasure to game on! Unless you do professional gaming as your full time job, a 1440p 165hz will always be more pleasurable then 1080p 240hz which i have also had for a while.
Man, you are the best reviewer!
I'm just amazed by the tracer gameplay
Hi! Have you played the mag251rx with fps hovering between 100-140fps? If yes, how does it perform compared to the TN 240hz also played with 100-140fps? Does the MSI show more overshoot and smearing or is it still better than the AW?
You should do a review and comparison of the new alienware ips 240hz 25 inch and these 2 monitors!
dude ngl ur tracking is insane i saw thosse shots
Got myself a Acer Predator 144hz IPS. Gorgeous colors and contrast, and blew my mind smoothness when I can get a game up past 100FPS. Best of both is always nice. Course if you're a pro gamer you'd do Hz over color I'm sure.
That's some quality tracer gameplay there, definitely not an amateur tracer player
I recently returned my Alienware AW2518HF 240Hz and ordered an ASUS VG249Q 144Hz IPS. As someone who only plays first-person shooters, I never thought that the difference from 144Hz to 240Hz could be this minor. I can now confidently say that a 240Hz TN monitor like the XL2546 is no way near worth $500. My next move is trying out a 1440p 144Hz IPS. If the size (27'') happens to be a problem, I'll replace it with the MSI MAG251RX 240Hz IPS.
240Hz feels exactly like how I imagined the jump from 144Hz to 180Hz would feel like. Slightly smoother, but nothing groundbreaking.
Linus made a video in collaboration with some professional esport players and another tech youtuber, and they also come to the conclusion that 60hz to 144hz is the big jump, and 144 to 240 is not as noticeable, but it does give a little bit of advantage even for casual.
Great job!! Maybe the Alienware AW2518H with G-sync (not AW2518Hf) can beat the Zowie XL2546 (they call him the king off fps)? I really can't make up my mind which one to get...keep up the good work.
Nice video!! Really wanna know your opinion on the new LG 144Hz nano IPS panel. Is there a big difference between it and 240Hz TN panel and is it good enough for casual-competitive FPS game play?
If you lower the backlight brightness on your ips it gives a crt nostalgia type feel and can see better in FPS.
Optimum: "I don't think I'm a good enough E-Sports player to notice..."
Me: Holy shit, he's playing Tracer hundreds of times better than I could.
My 144hz monitor, Glorious Model O, and much lower DPI setting (all thanks to you) STILL don't even bring me close to your skill.

I have a friend that's red-green colourblind and he says that some UI in games are super confusing, but he still kicks ass. So colour accuracy in games doesn't make you any better.
I have a ultrawide AW3418DW, very happy with it. My next upgrade will be when oled ultrawide HDR exist
I have the 240hz TN monitor. While gaming I always use the maximum response time mode, yes, there is ghosting, but the response time is just on point.
You gotta love a review with Overwatch gameplay in the background
I would really like to see this against the BenQ XL2540 !!
so which one are you sticking with for the future for your gaming setup?
@Optimum Tech Please do a review of the Razer Raptor monitor, would love to know your thoughts
Thanks for the 18:9 aspect ratio
After I got my first ips panel I never went back. For me better color was more enjoyable than super high fps. I'm usually happy around 80-100 fps for most games and even 60 for more cinematic games.
The rise of gaming capable ips panels has made monitor choice much easier for me as a game artist
The monitors have different gammas.. With a darker Gamma even TN Panels can look more contrasty then IPS.. One click in the drivers options can change your picture quality completely..
Great video, i have a question- will I benefit from 240hz monitor if I watch UA-cam 30/60fps at 2x speed or VLC video at 4x speed? Thanks in advance
Had that IPS one. Absolutely worth it!
Is it great for competitive games like cs go + valorant ?
so which one do you like better for gaming?
I don't know about you, but when you have the two monitors displayed side by side with the Overwatch vod I can clearly see that the video on the IPS has a bit of delay compared to the TN.
Thank God you used the Blur Buster's UFO test
I am wondering, what did you use to measure the rgb spectrum and the white point ?
Can't wait for Micro- LED Monitors and TVs...
Those Black levels...🤤
not just black levels, also response times, no ghosting, no edge bleeding, and no burn-in. Once that technology is ready it'll (hopefully) completely make LCD obsolete
@@tommihommi1 Yeah, but sadly we have to wait until that happens. I hope people don't get confused when it comes to differentiating between Micro and Mini- LED...
Yes it’ll be revolutionary! Can’t wait!
Awesome comparison
I recently bought the BenQ ZOWIE XL2546 e-Sports Gaming Monitor con DyAc, 24.5”, 240 H
And to be honest I will gladly sacrifice the tiny color accuracy. Tn for me still reins supreme as far as esports goes. Nice review btw, glad I subscribed the content is really good :).
But did you have another 240Hz IPS monitor to compare it to?
@@mr.bitsbyte4664 yes my rog swift, which i sold for this one :)
Input Lag is what really matters, since it is also always much higher than response time. :)
Hey, btw you shoud def check out the asus tuf VG279QM its a 280hz ips panel, thank you!
Can you do a review or reviews on 43' Monitors!!! and I'm not talking about the exaggerating stretched out versions.
The problem with all these high refresh rate monitors is the scan line ghosting. Have yet to see one that if you push to their max refresh rate which does not have this issue.
I will get a 27" 240hz wqhd monitor if there is one.
Your production quality and gameplay are insane. Keep up the good work :)
There is one. Called ViewSonic, google it. Costs 859 euro on amazon or newegg, can't remember. I am buying the same one, but 1080p, because it costs 570 euro instead. I'd, of course, pay more, but I've just upgraded my pc fully and didn't want to spend much more money on it. So buy one and enjoy! Perhaps, I was wrong, can't find this viewsonic, found only 165 hertz. But look for it, it should be there, should have been not viewsonic then.
I Preordered the first 240hz 1440p IPS monitor a few days ago!
where? I'm waiting for Asus/Acer models anyway.
Did you change the base of the Alienware monitor ?
Nice ips vs tn comparison pls make a ips vs va version ty
My first monitor was a TN, and have never found never VA or ips panel that I could game on without wanting to go back to TN
You should talk about input lag, which is different from response time.
great video, where did you buy the new stand for alienware monitor?
It's awesome to see IPS finally catch up to TN panels
No motion blur is such a game changer when it can be used with and acceptable brightness level.
I can see a clear difference myself on my old and tested XL2411Z when it run it on a overlocked 120hz no motion blur and standard 144hz.
Main reason why I have a 2nd IPS 1440p 144hz monitor that is used for everything BUT FPS gaming.
Love that your putting out way more content! Keep it up!
I got a 270hz asus1080p ips, dude the 3ms response time is so sweet guys and it just slow to TNs like 0.5 0.3 ms
what about Alienware 24" 240Hz IPS ?
I bought an MSI Optix MAG321CQR (32", 1440p, 144hz, VA, 1ms) a month ago and I'm not exactly satisfied.
The inverse ghosting is abhorrent on all modes except for "fastest" which, like OpTech said in the video, utilizes an anti-motionblur feature that dims the screen by far too much. The screen also takes on a warmer hue and the whites become washed out, leaving you at a disadvantage in some games. I urge anyone looking to buy an MSI monitor to try it out in person before buying. The response time has left much to be desired.
optimuim tech reviewing MSI MAG251RX not your MSI MAG321CQR VA panel
Newest IPS panels with super quick response time and a whopping 700:1 contrast ratio capable of depriving any scene of its depth.
I agree, the LG is so praised and when I tried it out the blacks look grey and the contrast was pretty bad. I returned it. Waiting for the reviews on the new Samsung Odyssey 27. 240hz and quantum dot VA.
How much do the two monitors cost? Price was a big advantage for TN before.
I'm also surprised how similar image and colors in general are on the two monitors. TN haters made me think it'd be much more dim and grayish/unsaturated in comparison.
Me: Things are Changing!
My Wallet: Nope
Thank You for this video 😘😘 Bro
How about the Alienware AW2521HF (240Hz IPS), which is direct sucsessor to your own daily Alienware TN 240Hz monitor. Would like to get that review, so I could decide if IPS is worth the extra 80usd compared to TN panel.
use the anti motion blur feature the diff is night and day in overshoot
Can you kindly do a comparison with Asus VG27AQ and LG 27GL850?
Where do you get the monitor stand for the Alienware monitor?
Where you find that stand for your Alienware monitor? I been thinking of getting that monitor but the stand it comes with take up so much space
i'm just to scared from IPS Glow, VA is the perfect sweetspot as i play most of the time in dark for better imersion, nice review !
VA has the worst motion with VA Panel smearing..
It's a good time to be a gamer. Wish I held off on buying my Alienware....that new ips 25 in black is tempting. Also my screen defaulted to 60hz the other day and I was so confused thinking my system was throttling and I was dropping frames 😅. I forgot how awful 60 hz looks
Are you going to review the x35 this monitor has been our for some time but no one really has reviewed it
Should we leave adaptive sync enabled on the 244 Hz monitor (for FreeSync TN panels) when we use G-Sync for Nvidia?
quick unrelated question, i have the same monitor as you, where did you get that monitor stand replacement and whats it called, im using the stock one and its ghod awful with the triangular legs design.
Are you editing photos/video on a TN panel? and how is it for media creation?
the ips panels have usually a lower input lag
All I need is 1440p, (micr)OLED, 240Hz with G-Sync for $400.. hopefully soon. Things are getting there at least it seems.
What stand do you use for the Alienware? I’m trying to find a minimal small footprint. Due to the stock one? Thank you for the amazing video!
Ryan Hughes in another video he said it’s just a stock dell stand
I have an Alienware AW2518H with a 1ms refresh rate and much better viewing angles than the one you are showing, the AW2518HF? On System Builder the specks are virtually the same except for Freesync. I don't recognize your Alienware monitor's stand so don't know what's up with that? Newer/Older model?
Hi, awesome video, can we get your settings for playing with the MSI Mag251 ? I am using one myself ans have been batling with the settings i should use on the monitor, do you use HDR ?
Does anyone know what monitor stand he uses with his Alienware monitor? It doesn't look like its original stand.
What is that monitor stand? Can you please tell me? I’d like to buy it because of some ergonomic problems with my current monitor stand.
