I don’t know about you, but it kinda feels like monitors haven’t really improved much over the last like… 10 years? At least when looking at the same panel type. Like, this is an Asus PG279Q - it was released in 2015, over 8 years ago now, and yet it’s a 165Hz 1440p IPS gaming monitor. You know, the sort of specs we’d look for today. It peaks at 350 nits which isn’t amazing, but isn’t exactly awful either, has the usual 1000:1 contrast ratio and claims a 4 millisecond response time average. Considering most modern displays are outright lying about having “1 millisecond” response times anyway, surely there isn’t much of a difference here? Well, let’s put that hypothesis to the test.

I'd like to see similar tests with VA panels since they've improved dramatically over the years

I'm on an old Dell TN panel monitor (S2716DG) as my main display and still not really sure if it's worth upgrading since gaming feels fine on it and I have an OLED TV for films/TV. The gamma is the only thing that I really struggle with but I've kind of gotten used to it now. That said I tend to watch videos like these to try and keep up with what's ideal for a budget-ish replacement should it die. Cheers for doing these videos by the way, they're really helpful and accessible for idiots like myself to get an idea.

Sorry about the "new frames need analysing" banner! I have re-rendered the video but I don't think it's worth replacing it (I can't replace it in place, I'd have to delete this and reupload). I've made sure the banner won't show up in future videos though!

Interesting! I won't be upgrading anytime soon, though. I've been using an Acer Predator XB271HU for about 5 years, and I'm still really happy with it. 1440p, 144hz, with G-Sync. I don't plan to upgrade until this thing either dies on me, or I'm able to afford a 4K OLED (and the hardware to play games at that res.)
This monitor is actually the most expensive piece of tech I've ever bought, at $600. Every TV, console, and video card I've bought has been cheaper. So that's another reason I'm clinging onto it.

As someone still rocking the PG279Q after 8 years, but looking to replace it, this is a perfect video for me. Thank you!
It'll be a 2024 gen OLED for me next year, but it's definitely served me well for a very long time - well worth the £650 I paid at the time considering.
It's been on the 'normal' OD setting all this time; should I be running it on the Extreme?!

    • @TechteamGB

Normal is definitely best! Extreme looks awful! Glad you've made the most out of it though, and a new OLED will be one hell of an upgrade!

I have a pg279q and a cooler master gp27q on my desk and I can say the difference is noticeable in SDR. The cooler master has a much wider colour gamut and superior response times on dark transitions. that's before you factor in the mini led backlight and HDR capabilities which make a massive difference in image quality. Another thing to consider is the pg279q cost me £650 in 2016 adjusted for inflation that's nearly £850 you can buy the cooler master for £500 today and it has more features (HDR,10bit, KVM and mini-led)and better performance for a lot less. Display tech is progressing especially on price.

Im about to go from a 2011 era 40inch LCD emerson tv to a 27inch 180HZ IPS Monitor with 1ms response so im sure ill be easily impressed. I couldnt even find the response time of the TV its so old and sucked 200 watts by itself. Now ill have freesync which i never used and without any of the screen cut off because of the bezel on the tv. It got like a decade of use and got me through rough times

i'm on the verge of buying one as my 23 inch lg from 2012 is starting to die, electric whining and flickering on and off, squished a bug inside the screen too... cost me £120, so very cheap and done its job well. i was thinking of ASUS TUF Gaming VG249Q, 23.8 InchFHD but then i wonder if its worth taking the opportunity to go for 27 inch 1440p.

is it an upgrade to an INNOCN 27G1S 1440p 240hz VA Panel from my very old (2016) LG 34UC79G-B 2560x1080 144hz IPS monitor? i mostly want better clarity and smoothness with the new monitor with less input delay than my old LG has right now. 2016 it was a pretty high end monitor but will a "budget" panel from 2023 have better latency and clarity? espacially because its VA and every VA panel i have seen looks pretty smeary.

Monitors have gone backwards in pixel density. Upscaling technology should allow for playable FPS at Retina resolutions such as 5K on Apple's 27" iMac. There used to be 24" 1440p 165hz gaming monitors but now we have to buy large monitors just to get a sharp picture.

  • @flat6croc
    @flat6croc 6 місяців тому

There's a fundamental problem with this analysis. Let's say you have a monitor where the response more or less matches the refresh. In other words, the response time is about the same as the time between new frames at the given refresh rate. This does not mean that the display will be crisp and clear. What it actually means is that when the display is showing motion, it's barely if ever showing the requested colours. Instead, it'll be constantly in transition - as soon as it achieves the target colour for a new frame, it's changing again to the next target colour without spending any time actually showing the target colour. For really clear motion rendering, the response time needs to be far, far faster than the individual frame time. Only then will the display actually render the right colour for some portion of the frame time. In this comparison, yes, the Gigabyte will be closer to the correct colour more of the time, but it will still be the wrong colour pretty much all the time and very much the wrong colour a lot of the time (assuming a significant colour transition for a given pixel) when rendering motion.

These 'actually real' response times are exactly why TN monitors are not the dead technology for gaming, which is the opposite of what most channels will tell you ... meaning all the biggest most popular channels.

Quantum dot doesn't improve color accuracy that much. Rather mostly it improves color coverage. For color Accuracy, Nano Cell technology is more helpful. Why do you think there is an N letter in LG QNED TVs? Because It stands for Nano Cell.
You may ask: But LG already uses both Mini LED and Quantum Dot technology in their QNED TVs why do they need Nano Cell? Besides isn't Nano Cell a thing of 2019 and kinda yesterday technology? that is because Nano Cell improves things like color accuracy in a way that those two other technologies can't! And not just that. When you can't or don't use those 2500 full array local dimming zones, it helps keeping the contrast 20 to 30 percent above average IPS panel that have a contrast ratio of 1000:1.
Nano Cell technology also helped improving viewing angels over the previous AH-IPS panels which have already seen an improve in viewing angels over 2015 IPS panels. But since Samsung tried to sue LG for using a renamed version of their PLS panels as AH-IPS, LG decided to stop selling them.

whats the point of adaptive sync only syncing down to 48hz ? It pushes you to always buy the newest and most expensive Hardware.
had to lock framerate to 40 instead of 60 in hogwarts because on 60 its flickering like hell in hogsmeade on my 4080.
paid only for alienware oled dwf 1000 bucks + 1500 bucks 4080 😂😂💪

For the love of god if you want to see actual colors get an OLED, I thought my LG GN850 looks great until I got an Asus 27AQDM and good lord the colors, the blacks, the brightness, everything was clear, crisp, life like. The IPS looks like a washed out dirty screen next to an OLED.
