This was not just good journalism but legit consumer safety activism. Great job team GN! I'm sure NZXT is many times a sponsor, and this and other forces have many times put you in a gross, gooey tar-pit like ethical landscape wrt this. I just wanted to say, I think you've handled that whole mess admirably, and really have done a great job here in general. Who knows, lives could have been saved by your sticktoitiveness. As someone 12 years deep into a career in automotive: EXCELLENT work on the testing and documentation. It won't be celebrated, but doing research on a potentially life-threatening issue that leads to a formal recall should be. I love to see it.

      @obake6290 3 роки тому +5

@@TechyBen In my opinion, security researches have earned a reputation as troublemakers.
CPU sidechannel attacks that require physical access to a running machine and use of esoteric sensors to extract bits of information? Really?
Or the GRUB (Linux bootloader) problem where setting up the bootloader configuration in a specific way allowed you to run arbitrary code? Never mind that the ability to configure the bootloader means you already have root access and thus the ability to run arbitrary code.
I hesitate to call them non-issues, but flaws like these are about as close as you can get.
That said, having them is much better than not. Researches do find REAL problems that need fixing, I just wish they had a better sense of the real severity of the problems they find. The media shares part of the blame as well though, running scare stories about nothingburger security "flaws" without understanding their real impact.

@J Fz i have. I've actually been subscribed to MKBHD longer than any other tech tuber. But the changes that Steve has caused are done much faster and without question. Linus hasn't really forced many changes like Steve has and the same for MKB. MKB is probably the best reviewer out there but Steve's technical knowledge and data to support his opinion is what separates him. When he makes suggestions companies listen. And this is just the most recent example of it.

Good call, I did the same with MSi that my old PC was heavily using (mobo, GPU, monitor) even if most of their PR stunts were craptop related I decided to stop using them even if they have very good products in the desktop market. The brand new new rig is using a Gigabyte mobo now, the GPU is made by AMD and still the same monitor for now. It kinda feels like a downgrade (230€ mobo with no Power/reset buttons, really? and very little accessories in the box) but I think it's important to stop supporting brand that do wrong stuff.

The whole thing that gets me is we're talking about the cost of grounding some screw holes with a miniscule amount of copper. NZXT chose to go with the guys who were cheaping out on that for what was probably nothing more then a few pennies less on each riser bought. Let's say they produced 50,000 units for the first run and going with this riser over another saved them 3 cents per unit. They would save a whopping $1500 lol Doesn't seem worth it now, does it NZXT? They will be paying exponentially more just in shipping out and shipping in defective risers/cases.

Never attribute to malice what can appropriately be explained by stupidity.
I would say it's more likely that the error wasn't penny pinching on the circuit-board itself, but rather that the company they purchased from where using cheap PCB design software.
The main players in the industry have the software designed and scripted to flag the 1mm safety margins, the copper sleeved through holes and appropriate screw sizes by default.
If the company was using well maintained design software it would have taken an intentional override of 3 different safeties to allow this - as opposed to the company accountant choosing to by the software at 1/2 price.

Insight into the Samsung thing. I started work at a company called WeGoLook shortly after that whole incident. WeGoLook is a gig worker type company where people mostly go get photos of vehicles and property for insurance claims so they don't have to send adjusters, but we also did some other stuff, including having our "Lookers" go out to Samsung customers that had their phone explode or catch fire. They'd get pictures of damages (and sometimes injuries😬), pick up the phone, put it in a special hazard box, and ship it back to Samsung.
Although the Note 7 situation cooled down, Samsung kept using WeGoLook for any incidences like that, which weren't SUPER common, but still did happen every once in a while.
I'm probably not supposed to talk about any of it, but I don't care. It's been well over a year since I left. I did account coordination for a lot of our big clients and can say, without hesitation, that Samsung was the most unorganized, backward, wasteful, and frustrating client we had. I think when companies get THAT massive, no one really knows who's in charge and we'd constantly get conflicting information and instructions from different people at different times. Like...what they hired us and our contractors to do was so simple, yet their craving for utter control meant those orders were way overcomplicated and expensive. Guess it was good they also paid us a fortune for the service. That experience, and stories I've heard from friends that work at other massive and old corporations just taught me when a company gets that big, almost no one works together or cares about costs or efficiency. It's nuts!

That you were still able to buy the case is scary.

It's pretty funny how a niche low volume case that will never even sell that much is causing so much trouble for a company. Really shows how much they cared about the segment to begin with, they probably just wanted to put something out there to have market share for this format.

@J Fz I actually hadn't checked the price at all, but since this comes with a cooler and PSU included it doesn't seem as bad as I thought.

All they had to do was recall, change the riser, destroy the faulty one instead they couldn’t even ship 2 stupid plastic screws... its not like millions of people bought this case, no need to ship the cases internationally just repair them in local tech service... takes 5 minutes. Nzxt fucked up big time

They have sold over 20k units. You cant just change from metal to plastic screws locally and call it a day... what if some random guy bought a case in 2 years and during install, one of them broke... and he decided to use a metal screw he had as a quickfix ....... --> potensial risk of house burning down / people getting killed in their sleep.

@@racerex340 which we all appreciate! But the joke is that “covering” the case (literally, with like a blanket) would be even more dangerous than the case is by itself 😉

Thank you for putting so much time and effort into this safety issue. It's sad that the media and industry are so power/money focused and politically driven (mainstream media/reporters, at least) that the news that is typically put out is biased; it is refreshing to see that you are truly independent and focused on the consumer without a political/financial/business partnership driving what (and if) you cover.
This has also been an enlightening series, especially this video where I think you have done a great job outlining high level how the recall process can work. I'm glad you are holding industry suppliers accountable and pushing for consumer advocacy - keep up the great work and videos!
PS: You know you're onto something when both Jay and Linus refer to your breaking news/research in their own videos, or cover something only after you begin covering it :)
