      I am staying away from components like power supplies until supply chains stabilise.. I only want Japanese electrolytics in my power supply anyway e.g. Nippon Chemicon (e.g. EVGA).. and with the scamdemic having caused mess in supply chains, causing possible infiltration of fake and/or substandard or unsuitable parts.. I am staying well away. Gigabyte is a compan y I used to favour more for motherboards.. now because of this debacle I am wary.

      Well, those bridges don't stay burnt, since the PR jocks don't tend to stick around in one company for too long, so whatever sour feelings they might have about a media outlet tends to leave when the guy gets a new job. The bad news is that he might take the bad attitude with him to the new company.

    • @loose_nuts_are_faster

      I dunno about that. The GN Team is operating with the user's best interest in mind. I think GN will continue to develop, grow, and remain true to Steve's editorial direction. Just look at the move to the new work space, buying a fan testing device thingy, considering doing sound testing, hiring employees who are dedicated to GN and Steve. I could continue!
      The smell of the figurative bridges Steve is burning is much better than the smell of burning components. If a company get's their feathers ruffled up it is just because they have no other reply. And how Gigabyte replied just brings more shame onto themselves, on top of this PSU issue.

    I used to work for a VRM manufacturer, And literally my job there was testing these components, CONSTANTLY slamming them against their current limits for hours at a time. I imagine other reputable manufacturers could say the same. In order for Gigibyte's PSUs to be exploding like this, they must have really, really fucked up, which in my mind means they really, really cheaped out and thought it wouldn't bite them until it did.

      When you look at how they mixed components from different manufacturers, that for me is the root of a problem. Them using garbage components (and they are garbage, not because they are Chinese, Chinese manufacturers are capable of making excellent products but they will never say no if you want them to make garbage) isn't the issue, you can design around it, keep them in tolerance, have some headroom so they don't explode, but when you are grabbing anything with the roughly same value, thinking it would be fine, NOT TESTING IT PROPERLY, then you are in trouble. Lack of testing and/or negligence was the issue, and frankly, if they really wanted to be lazy, just buy from Nippon Chemi-Con and Intersil, they have image and business to lose if something explodes, much more than some unknown, interchangeable factory in China, full of Uyghur slave workers.

I have a 750w Seasonic power supply in the machine sitting next to me that has been in 4 different builds and has been without problems for around 15 years now. It definitely wasn't the cheapest unit, but it was built with quality parts, over-engineered for its rated output, and is just as good now as when it was built. While I think the quality of some Seasonic power supplies today probably aren't as consistently good as they once were, it is still probably my go-to brand of choice.

    That's quality right there. Yes, it's a bit more expensive, but that usually makes a difference with electronics.
    You can try to save money anywhere on your PC, never try saving money on the PSU.
    BeQuiet is the only company i trust with PSUs nowadays. Built dozens of PCs with their PSUs and the only time one died was when someone dumped a drink on the PC. And they replaced that under warranty even tho they were told what happened.
    I'm sure, there are other companies producing good quality PSUs, but I'm not really willing to take a risk.

And I will definitely switch to Seasonic when I finally manage to buy a new PSU for my main system.
      And just for context: the old PSu has 500W rated power (470 or so at 12V) while the BeQuit (Pure Power series) had 700W (with almost everything avail at 12V cuz its a DC-DC one).
      And don't get me wrong, I don't hate them. I widely use FSP PSUs (pulled from old oem systems) together with BeQuit System Power ones which never failed (til now), but I won't trust them for my main pc anymore.

      nowadays every company is going for expansion and diversification - which is fine as long as they don´t cheap out on their products .
      gigabyte using some unknown chinese company to make their power supplies in order to cut down the cost is really the issue here
      (appart from denial and going on an offensive about their mistakes) :
      (should they stick to reputable OEMs and entrust CWT , seasonic , delta , super flower or even FSP or other reputable company
      to make their power supplies this would not have happened but the problem is it would cost them more money .

      He reminds me of total biscuit (RIP) in many ways. The guy flat out admits that you might not agree with his opinions, so instead he reviews games based on facts like frame rates in various sections of the game. Does it have an FOV slider? Does it have rebindable keys? And then he would tell you what he liked or disliked about it in a way that makes it easy to say, well he didn't like it, but based on his facts I will. I actually have played a number of games that I enjoyed based on his facts. And there were plenty of times he pissed off game developers for crapping on their terrible performance. "I have dual geforce titans!!! (back when there was only one) why is the performance so poor in this location?" he got attacked a lot. But then there were other game developers that actually worked with him trying to make sure that even if he didn't like the game it would at least run to his standards.

      @@zacharytaylor8523 I would put money on MEIC having designed these for OEM, and probably shopped them around to various established vendors. Probably offered an extremely competitive price, leading some Gigabyte exec to believe they scored big getting in early with an established power brick OEM looking to break into the PSU market. The initial pricing they had for these likely included very juicy profit margins for both Gigabyte as well as retailers (hence why there seems to be such crazy deep inventory levels at a variety of retailers).
      Of course honouring a rock-bottom contract production price means MEIC had to start swapping various component suppliers out possibly just due to supply shortage issues, but also quite likely as a way to cut costs finding the cheapest suppliers that "met spec" on each component. This is fairly typical for low end budget units, and a good reason why PSUs for the most part are a "you get what you pay for" product in the PC space. Higher end units will have the designs specifying specific manufacturer/part numbers for various components (they may include multiple specific options, like the spec-equivalent alternatives from a few different high end Japanese capacitor manufacturers).

    OPP is actually a low stress feedback loop, it senses the output overload and shuts down the input driver stage, it’s nothing like shutting off a relay under heavy load, it’s more like turning the off button on your TVs remote control. Gigabyte either screwed up the basic design (unlikely), or during qualification it set the trip level so high that the PSU was already in catastrophic failure before protection even activates.

    • @emanwe01
      @emanwe01 3 роки тому

      So OPP is supposed to perform a somewhat graceful shutdown of the unit?

    • @1337Ox
      @1337Ox 3 роки тому

      Yes that's exactly what I am thinking as well. Simply the OPP trip level was set too high, so before the PSUs shut down, some of the components "severely reduced its lifespan" like Gigabyte stated. Which led to the explosions at 60% power usage.
      Too bad Gigabyte didn't just acknowledge the problem and then lower the OPP threshold, which HOPEFULLY prevents the lifespan reduction of components.
      On the other hand, if we really want to play with the words here, Gigabyte said "repeatedly", because GN actually tripped the OPP more than once. Not that it matters, you should be able to trip OPP multiple times without any damage to the PSU at all, but I just wanted to point that out.

    • @KiraSlith
      @KiraSlith 3 роки тому

      The PSU design IS the problem, OPP is part of the PSU's design! Their OPP tested over 1.3x the rating, which wouldn't be bad if the components were even capable of meeting said rating, which you'd know if actually watched the video! Realistically, these are 360w PSUs pretending to be 500w PSUs, with an OPP over 750w. There was never any chance of it not failing catastrophically in use.
