This has to be the funniest review seen in a while - how about reversing those beautiful snap in tiny fans to see if the product can do anything - like pull more exhaust air out - but like you said there's that much plastic in the way anyhow that whatever potential gain would be negated by physical blockage ...
That's so weird because I just bought those little fans that go on the back of mine and mine don't turn backwards actually it pulls air out and it works real good so maybe you just got a bad one
I never fail to be impressed by the fact that your channels testing regiments are significantly better than a LOT of industrial companies i've worked at...
My dad was chasing down a truck part fitment issue. He tracked it down to one supplier's parts. When he visited and asked how they did quality checks, they said they used a jig. He asked to see it. They dug it out of a pile of industrial clutter in a corner of the warehouse. Safe to say he found the problem supplier. It's amazing how successful a bad company can be if they low-ball everything.

@@proCaylak i mean, if the fans are actually pulling air out of the exhaust, it could work in theory. Edit; nvm, you mean the base one. I meant the one on the back
They won't, they hinder airflow, same crap as those fans for the Xbox 360 years ago. The fans couldn't even move enough air, and the holes for the fans obstruct even more. So it's best to avoid them.
I was hoping that you would show some thermals with the fans flipped around the correct way in the thermal test to see if it even could theoretically work if they hadn't completely messed up their design.
Fan developers must have listened because I just saw one online that fixed most of your issues with that rear fan : fans blowing in the right direction, open design not closed off same volume as original hardware. You should do an updated video of current aftermarket accessories
5:00 I really expected better than this Steve and co. You misrepresented the packaging by a long shot and it was right in front of you the whole time. This IS a cooling device. It's meant to cool ambient by keeping as much of the heat inside the device as possible. You see, Sony in all their infinite wisdom doesn't realize that gamers don't like hot rooms and added pesky "exhaust ports" to their consoles allowing all that hot air to escape. If we've learned anything from Star Wars, exhaust ports are bad. These cooling devices are the unsung heroes of a generation of sweaty gamers. PS: Yes, this is all satire.
Im curious also, but along with flipping them, trim the plastic covering the fans on both sides as much as possible while still being able to keep them mounted the way they are.
@@alt5494 I dont wanna argue over such a miniscule thing but that fan isnt a 80 mm fan thats for sure, i had the "pleasure" to replace a few hundred 80mm fant in the past 15-20 years and none of em had that big hub compared to the blades, also if you check the holes for the screws in the corners and than you can see the proportion isnt right, its way to big.

A SUGGESTION FOR APRIL FOOLS(Attempt № 2): Perform some thermal testing for a very old computer(preferably 80s microcomputer or even an IBM PC compatible) with one twist: pretend that they are some new stuff.
I know it will be still fail but I want to see you flip the fans around, dremel out or remove the grilling and retest as a best possible scenario test as if they had "done it right".
Nothing matches the *INTERCOOLER for the Xbox 360!!* this is actually really sad.. the intercooler was a BEAST, because it ran really nice fans from the 12v Xbox 360 power brick.. it really chucked air, two 360s I have won't even get warm with it running!! Not even the OG Black 360 with the highest power draw..
He did, but didn't show in the graphs. He said though that even turning them around is still a worse result than stock because the thing has to little hole area and obstructs airflow.
These products are all from China. This is the problem with Amazon, same products but different brand/sellers selling the same Chinese crap. This is why you see the same product but with many different brand names/sellers, they buy Chinese products from factories and sell it as their own product.
That cant be 9000rpm, most server fans dont spin that fast and they're deafening.. is it possible its counting each fan blade as a revolution? So a 7 blade is actually spinning at ~1300rpm?
Yeah but most server fans aren't 1 inch coolers. These things here are freaking small. Also, I have a 7cm 3d printed cooler that spins at 6500rpm at full speed. 50db, crazy loud. So it's not hard to imagine a 3.5cm cooler spinning at 9k rpm. Still, bloody awful product.
I'm sure they thought of that but didn't wanna encourage anyone buying the product in any scenario plus I'm willing to bet it still wouldn't of improved the stock PS5 thermals.
I don’t think that would actually change much, sure now it’s blowing the right direction, but there’s also so much plastic in the way for the internal fan that it might still make less air flow outwards. So at best it would perform at stock levels I’d say

How are these two things related?
@jshowa o TF? You are saying companies with the means to own manufacturing plants can’t afford or have the luxury to own a team of R&D professionals to do R&D?

GN's level of complaining is why I comeback. It's so perfect in every way. "It makes just general existence NEAR the device measurably worse..."
Somebody did a great job on that clip-on mount, it's a shame about the rest of it.
You could easilly disassemble it and flip the fans
@@zsoltpeterdaniel8413 Would still likely be worse than stock because of how obstructive it is to normal exhaust.
Did you test the "rear-heater" with the fans turned around? I would really like to know if it actually cools the console a bit.
it mostly blocks the exhaust, so I don't think it would help much.
@@proCaylak i mean, if the fans are actually pulling air out of the exhaust, it could work in theory.
Edit; nvm, you mean the base one. I meant the one on the back
I bet it would help a little if it the fan was mounted correctly. To pull hot air out of the console.
I'm surprised he didn't run this test as part of the suite
They won't, they hinder airflow, same crap as those fans for the Xbox 360 years ago. The fans couldn't even move enough air, and the holes for the fans obstruct even more. So it's best to avoid them.
I was hoping that you would show some thermals with the fans flipped around the correct way in the thermal test to see if it even could theoretically work if they hadn't completely messed up their design.
I was thinking the same thing, he's already got it apart and they're not even screwed in, take like 3 seconds, 1 per fan!
Yeee
Yeah I was hoping he'd do that, I wanted to see if they'd actually help

Fan developers must have listened because I just saw one online that fixed most of your issues with that rear fan : fans blowing in the right direction, open design not closed off same volume as original hardware. You should do an updated video of current aftermarket accessories
Can you give me the referance please ?
Glad you added that at the end. I would have thought you were serious otherwise.
PS[5]: That was also satire.

Same thought here.
Im curious also, but along with flipping them, trim the plastic covering the fans on both sides as much as possible while still being able to keep them mounted the way they are.
The base of those cheap fans are too wide to actually provide good airflow if it had higher quality fans than your idea would 100% work effectively
thanks steve, you save me some money from not buying these third party cooler

I completely lost it when you opened that huge cooling base for the it only to have two 80mm 5v fans:-)
Honestly, I doubt they are 5v fans. Based on the RPM, I think they're 12v fans running at 5v
I really doubt that 2 fan is more than 40 or 50 mm, those blades are way to small for a 80 mm fan. You can clearly see that at the 7:30 timestamp
@@vukkzor it's a 80mm fan the large hub is common in cheap fans.
@@vukkzor 80mm fans are measured by the frame because of their use in servers. 80mm is 3.15 inches in the shot the fan is about the same size as Steve's palm. Which in adult males is between 2.75" and 4.25" across. no where near to 40mm (1.57") or 50mm.
Hey Steve, did you see that AMD finally admitted the USB dropouts issue when PCIe 4 is enabled? They made an official post on the AMD subreddit

I'm a little surprised that you didn't flip the fans to see if they'd actually work as intended if it weren't for shoddy assembly.
He did, but didn't show in the graphs. He said though that even turning them around is still a worse result than stock because the thing has to little hole area and obstructs airflow.
Maybe if they also cut away the obstructing plastic it might help slightly.
0:22 - "Instead they're just sorta stupid." 😂
These products are all from China. This is the problem with Amazon, same products but different brand/sellers selling the same Chinese crap. This is why you see the same product but with many different brand names/sellers, they buy Chinese products from factories and sell it as their own product.
Would've been curious to see what would've happened if you had flipped those fans around.
Yeah, would have been usefull to just see how useless it really is if the fans were in there the right way :D
I thought the same.
Makes sense. Thanks!
turn the fans around on the back "cooler" and see if that does anything.
"NEW DESIGN" --- you can imagine the rest of the commercial
I'm sure they thought of that but didn't wanna encourage anyone buying the product in any scenario plus I'm willing to bet it still wouldn't of improved the stock PS5 thermals.
I don’t think that would actually change much, sure now it’s blowing the right direction, but there’s also so much plastic in the way for the internal fan that it might still make less air flow outwards.
So at best it would perform at stock levels I’d say
Like GN stickied on their comment "Like we said in the video, flipping the fans is pointless because (A) this thing screams and you shouldn't use it anyway, (B) the plastic impedes more airflow than the fans add, (C) attempting to accelerate the exhaust in this manner is only going to make things worse."
“imperial minutes”
ahhhh Steve. 🤣
but what about if you flip the fans of the rear intake attachment to become an actual.exhaust ?
The thing I can't get over is the fact that this isn't the first time an aftermarket console cooler has put intake fans blowing the wrong way against the consoles exhaust. I remember coolers for the xbox 360 that had the exact same problem.
Nyko Intercooler, all versions XD.
I really want to know how to convert these imperial minutes to metrical
A imperial minute is 159,56 metrical seconds long and remember there are only 12 hours à 45 minutes.
Do you want your metric minutes converted to a New York minute, or just a regular imperial minute?
