I do video tutorials for my own industry and I have to say this is one of the best all-around video tutorials I’ve ever seen camera or no camera. You sounded natural, professional and best of all informative. Thank you very much for the great content.
Wow, thank you! I certainly appreciate the kind words from someone who knows the effort involved.
This is MUCH more enjoyable than celebrity videos!
Very kind of you to make that observation, thanks.
Another incredibly helpful video Maarten. Thank you. Already feels like I'll be ready to work when mine arrives!
Excellent. Always nice to read that my videos are appreciated.
Just to show you I'm a man who can change his mind I did purchase the X-T4. First, the IBIS was significantly improved due to subsequent firmware improvements. I now fine the IBIS very good---not GH5 excellent, but very good, and the lag has been significantly reduced.
The XT-4 is a wonderful camera, with, hands down, the best peaking for manual focus of any camera I know of except the BMPCC 4/6. Between them the gold medal for best peaking is, practically speaking, a dead heat.
Again, thanks for your excellent and (as always) concise presentation on the XT-4 video.
I wish more people would use your format: complete and concise. It shows how much respect you have for other's time.
Almost a year later and your video review is still, IMHO, the best and clearest that can be found.
Thanks for keeping us updated, and I appreciate these notes, as you have clearly tried many cameras.
Most of that flew right over my head as a photographer. I'm not really a video person but the X-T4 has me thinking about more video. Thanks for the thorough intro. I've got a lot to learn!
Always nice to hear that my videos are useful - even if challenging. Thanks for commenting.
I really appreciate the detail in this video you made about video settings for the X-T4. So many times when I'm trying to learn something from UA-cam I'm confronted with hip hop (which I don't really understand) but you do it with soul, which is close to my heart. Thanks to teaching an old cat new tricks.
Glad it was helpful! Always nice to know viewers appreciate my work.
Maarten...your videos are simply the best. Thank you for this great public service.
Glad you like them! Thanks for your kind comments.
Best overview of the xt4 even 3 years later!
Thanks very much, always nice to know my work is appreciated.
Grand merci Maarten! C'était très gentil de votre part
Rien à remercier, c'est mon plaisir.
Hello, I am blown away with how useful this video was! I had started going through the manual and then just searched a question and your video came up where you answered all my questions and then some! What great, practical advice and tips! Thank you for creating this guide! I'm shooting video with a Helios 44-2 (plain, non speed-boost adapter) and recording/monitoring with a Black Magic Designs Video Assist 12G. Amazing shots and quality!
I'm always pleased to read that my videos are helpful, thanks very much for your kind words and for taking the time to comment.
Best tutorial for shooting video on the Fugi x-T4 that I have found. Just got this camera and you just got me excited. Thank you.
That's great to read, thanks for commenting. Always nice to know I've encouraged my viewers to be more creative.
Great video! Bravo! It's refreshing to find good content that is not just crazy transitions to look cool, but actually informative and thorough. Thank you! I can translate a lot of it to my X-S10.
I appreciate that! Always nice to know that viewers like my videos.
Totally watchable, wholly educational, and a delight to be coming from someone with decades of experience. Thanks Maarten!
Thank you for your kind words.
so happy you made this!!!! thanks for saving my time reading the xt4 manual.
Always nice to know I've made my viewers happy and to know I've helped them make good use of their cameras.
Maarten, thank you for such a thorough tutorial. You are a gifted educator.
I appreciate your kind words, thanks very much.
I love your reviews and tutorials... Direct and comprehensive towards practical applications....
Happy to hear that! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
@@MaartenHeilbron been listening to you for a long time though, but subscribing to your channel is very important. I bought the XT1 when it was released then and few other Fujifilm cameras, but I mainly used Nikon for wildlife after that; I acquired the XT4 to add to my work and it has been a joy in spite of some shortcomings that are tolerable, thanks again for you instructions, helped me a lot to know the system again. I will keep it here, I love your reviews and tutorials, not a moment wasted.
@@nokchaiprathetthai5929 Always nice to read that my viewers appreciate my work.
Extremely helpful - thankyou. I just moved over to the X-T4 from a Canon DSLR and was bewildered by the video settings, so thankyou for breaking it all down and for explaining everything so clearly. :)
Glad it helped! Always nice to read that my videos are useful.
This is the best tutorial I have found! Thank you so much!
Glad that you found it and that it was helpful. Thanks for your kind words.
no BS, straight to the point information! LOVE IT
Thanks, that's exactly what I'm trying to deliver.
Incredibly useful tutorial. Many thanks
Glad it was helpful! Always a pleasure to read kind words from my viewers.
This was incredibly helpful. The last video I shot was on a Panasonic M50 camcorder, edited with a Commodore Amiga and a gen-loc. I greatly appreciate your efforts!
Good grief. I'm probably the only UA-camr who understands what gen-loc represents. That's why I also think the ATEM mini switcher is the most amazing device.
Excellent tutorial Maarten, thank you and stay safe.
Thanks, you too! I appreciate the kind words.
Your videos are always so pleasant to watch and informational but not boring. Thanks. Stay amazing and keep doing videos.
Thank you! Will do! A pleasure to read your comments.
Thanks Maarten, great video and enjoyed learning so much about our new XT4. Your review videos also helped sell the purchase price given all the great features you highlighted. Would love a similar tutorial video for photography settings. I'm sure there is even more personalization with still settings, but the way you explain different options/settings is really helpful for new and amateur photographers. Great work!
Thanks for your kind words, always nice to know my videos are useful and appreciated. I do these tutorials for video settings because those settings are not obvious to photographers. However, I feel that once I've covered focus and exposure in the review that provides sufficient information.
However, I hear your request and will think about it - if I can get the X-T4 back for a return visit.
Sneaking in here to congratulate you on your 100k Maarten. Well done and very well deserved 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Thank you for this very helpful video Maarten. Being brand new to Fuji and new to the X-T4 and mainly a stills photographer it seems there is a whole new world of videography here. Even a bit intimidating I have to admit.
Thanks for your kind words. Just take it day by day, and when you have time try a new setting or feature to learn how it works and what benefits it may provide.
Maarten, many thanks for your reference videos: Always there when we need to boost our creativity (here, stills to vids).

Fantastic review! Thanks for sharing
Always nice to know that my videos are appreciated, thanks for your kind words.
While contemplating cameras vs phones not serenely paddling, but viewing your XT4 reviews I wondered at their complexity, along with your own admission that more often a phone photo has a more pleasing appearance, with adequate image quality. Your simple setup of XT4.. I counted 40 menu pages and settings in 3 minutes perhaps there lies answer of phone domination, phones produce a pleasing image, more simply and cheaply, celebrated by Adam Smith in 1776, this psychology is inbuilt. Very few buy premium featured cameras for necessity? many I suspect are sold by some strange inner calling. I was discussing with the owner of a business who sold all aspects of collectable antiques I said perhaps he was curing buyers of their compulsive urge to buy and posses..."Cure he replied...We are the cause of their illness" Excellent reviews as usually served up in you unique fashion
Interesting thoughts, thanks for commenting.
The range of human expression can thankfully accommodate both those who like to worry the details and adjust the parameters over the many menu pages as well as those who prefer a simple ability to capture a thought or emotion.
Excellent video. Thanks

That is the best explainer settings video about XT4! Thank you. I have tons of vintage lenses from my uncle that I want to try on video mode with xt4. Would be great to see your suggestions and tricks about it.
As you'll be using manual focus, spend some time trying out the expanded view and peaking modes to determine which you prefer. And thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀
Really was looking forward to see more video capabilities of XT4 for video. I think this will be more than capable for UA-cam videomaking.
I described the features in my review (video is in part two) ua-cam.com/video/pHhhay_wqu8/v-deo.html
Thank you Maarten.

JUST got my X-T4 - first video I'm watching for setup!
Hope you find the information you need.
Maarten Heilbron I’m sure I will - have you reviewed any gimbals with the X-T4?
@@SeanChandler067 I haven't, but at this point I'm using the Ronin-S with the X-H1, so it should be more than suitable.
@@MaartenHeilbron I've been watching reviews of the Ronin SC vs Weebill S - both should work well with the X-T4. How would you rate the new XC35 f/2 for video?

Hi thank you for the excellent video!

Fantastic!
Always nice to hear from a viewer who appreciates my work.
Thanks.
You're welcome!!!
I have been using auto exposure mostly, but it has also happened in manual. And yes, I'm using auto-focus...which occasionally goes a little haywire, too. It's odd: sometimes it never happens and sometimes it happens a lot, and I'm in a completely controlled live stream "set" with no change in lighting (or moving around to affect the autofocus). However, I just now watched the XT4 video and haven't had time yet to try out the manual settings you demonstrated. I'm admittedly a newbie and think this camera is likely "above my pay grade". I simply need the thing to stop darkening and lighting like it has a mind of its own. Ha!
When the camera is in auto, it has a mind of its own - that's what those settings are designed to do.
In a situation where the light is not changing, and the distance between camera is subject is constant, you will get best results with full manual exposure, focus and custom white balance settings. Not sure if you watched the live chat last night - but that's a full manual configuration.
Okay, that was....how should I put it: FANTASTIC. Thank you so much Maarten. Very kind of you.
Sadly, the X-T4 won't be shipping here in these disunited states until May 11th---(bummer). But, happily, I have plenty to occupy me until then video-wise.
The X-T4 looks like a real improvement over the X-H1--sans that fantastic body configuration of the X-H1...love that camera, and would never have sold it if the IBIS were better.
IBIS looks highly improved from your clips (and those of others)---better than Sony (damned by faint praise) but a bit short of the gold standard: the GH5.
One thing to note about the focus box in fully manual I find compelling: 1. set the focus box, zoom in on object A. 2. get the full screen view and move the box to object B, zoom in. At this point you're still sharply focused on object A. 3. Start rolling---UNLIKE ALL OTHERS the Fuji does not revert to full view as soon as you start rolling. 4. While your view screen is still zoomed in on object B, and your recording is actually shooting the whole scene, count the requisite seconds of your choice, perform a manual focus pull on object B. Stop the recording a piacere!, review the recording and observe a PERFECT focus pull.
I've tried them all--and none provides this very valuable capability for fully manual shooting. I loved using it on the X-H1, and it looks to me like it is retained on the X-T4. How is it Fuji, famously known for its stills capability, gets this video thing while cameras known for video (Sony, I'm looking at you) don't seem to have a clue?!? Enquiring minds want to know.
That said, the second I get my X-T4 and charge up the batteries I know exactly where I'm heading. Maybe I can get time to review the IBIS with third party lenses---on my part, mostly likely Canon FD lenses.
Clearly, this camera is going to be a joy to shoot. Now Fuji need only do one more thing: get a separate XLR attachment (hot shoe mounted), and it will all but rival the GH5 for video capability.
ONE QUESTION: You mentioned shooting video in Manual focus mode--right? If so, do you know what Fuji lenses support mechanical focus (as opposed to focus by wire)? I know some Olympus lenses actually provide an in-lens option.
Thanks again, Maarten. You're really the best reviewer on the tube!---not just in content, but in delivery and manner---Let that be a clue to those who deliver comments like, "cool video, dude."
God knows, we need a restoration of order in the west, and manners is actually a good starting point!!!
I was debating whether I should alert you or just let you find it.
Thanks for being the inspiration for this one.
For as good as the stabilization is, if that's your need, still better to use a gimbal.
Right, not sure why Fujifilm got this one - but they do have a good production video heritage, for lenses anyway. There are lots of third party XLR adapters, I'd rather use those than be stuck with an expensive and proprietary system. Parts of this video were recorded using dual system. It's not hard.
The only true mechanical manual focus lens I've seen from Fujifilm is the 16mmF1.4. It has a clutch to switch between mechanical and auto focus. However, the linear focus setting also enables any lens to serve as a defined travel lens so you can mark a focus setting and do a focus pull while shooting. There are also the MKX lenses which have marked defined travel capability.
Finally, I am grateful for your interest, your support and your kind words. Stay safe.
Thank you for this high quality tutorial :)
You're very welcome! I appreciate the kind words.
The best!
Thanks!

Glad you enjoyed it - always nice to know viewers like my work.
Thank you Maarten, great helpful and useful tips. I wish there was a bit more about the HLG and about the advantage of 422 over 420 with some examples, as i do not know if it is worth buying the external recorder to get the 422 option, for indie documentary work. Thank you and all the best.
If you are wondering, then it's not. There's a marginal difference in the reproduction of some saturated colours. The advantage is ten bit, which provides quite a bit more latitude for grading, and a recording format (ProRes) that is easier to edit and records at a higher data rate.
Great video..! but is possible to record in h265 10 bit also in camera..not only with the atomous ninja external right?
Yes, it is.
Thank you for your time again. Very great video. Did you find any way to change quickly between the 24fps and 60fps. Or do you manually have to change every time the frame rate and shutter speed? Like in the Sony A7 you can save those settings to the dial wheel memory places. Other question. Are there any way to record the 120fps or 240 fps normally (with audio and doing slow motion on post only for those moments where needed) ?
I appreciate your kind words, thanks.
I didn't try that, or look for that solution. Fujifilm's memory positions don't hold that information (it's a stills feature). The highest frame rate at any resolution is 60.
Maarten is the best.
Maarten thanks you for your kind words.
Thanks for all info sir. I noted every work you'd say. Just get XT4 :)

Thanks a ton, I appreciate the kind words.
This is a very helpful video- some settings tips which I found very useful. I am struggling with noise in my footage and, although I believe I'm exposing correctly, I am seeing it even at iso 640. It is very frustrating as I am seeing some amazing results on UA-cam.
I have no idea what's causing noise at ISO 640. Is it a dark scene? Does it need more light in the background? Is that where the noise is?
Thank you for responding. I was conducting some test shots to see how it would cope with shadows and bright highlights (half interior but with exterior through window in vision). I exposed to the right but when I brought the image into FCPX the waveform is not as flat as I would have expected. My shadows are at 25 IRE but my highlights are clipped. There is noise in the shadows which does not improve when I pull the shadows down. I also ran some low light high iso tests (8000+) and was really happy with the results!
Significantly less noise shooting at 800 iso which makes sense if the article I read on dual native ISO is correct.
@@phildoherty You are clearly much more sensitive to noise than I am.
@@phildoherty Not sure where your first reply {I was conducting ...) was earlier. Here's the reply to that.
Are you shooting with F-LOG? I do not advise exposing to the right. Centre the histogram, that should avoid clipped highlights (and shadow noise). If you want cleaner shadows, expose to the left, or make the appropriate adjustments in your NLE. What is your resolution/data rate? Lower resolutions and data rates will be noisier.
Thank you Maarten for a great intro to video. You must have been a teacher in your working career sometime you’re very thorough. I have a new Fuji XT4 and I have never done video. You make it look easy. I will watch your next video too. My comment is when you go through menus you go a little fast as it is hard to find menu you are on in many instances. Do you have a video check list on your website? I will have to figure out how to remember all these options LOL! Have a good day.
Wow, thanks for your very kind words. I don't have a checklist for this video, but that is a good suggestion.
Hi Maarten, thank you for great video guide. I have xt4 and would love to ask you about the noise reduction for video. Does it make sense in flog and does it make a positive impact overall or you do not recommend using it? Any thoughts on it much appreciated. Thank you.
No, I don't believe it has any effect when using F-Log. If low light noise is a specific concern, then you should probably consider a better more professional camera that provides a true RAW output. However, using the X-T4 with an Atomos recorder does provide better results than recording in camera.
Hello Maarten, a quick question apply {Fuji Lut Applied) are you referring on post processing or there is a possibility to apply a trick while filming for reading the contrast easier ?.. Sorry if this question is silly but I'm new in fuji gear ..
There are no silly questions - if you have a concern or doubt, please ask.
The recording that the camera makes, either internally or on an external recorder needs to have some adjustment (LUT or other) made in post processing. There is a screen setting to simulate the display with the LUT applied, but that is not applied to the recording.
Great video. Is it possible to save all camera current settings into one custom "slot" and then change the camera settings to a different shooting stile and save them into another "slot" and later recall each shooting stile when needed?
Please accept my apologies for the previous incorrect answer (I was in the middle of answering replies to a video about the Nikon Z camera's custom settings). Yes, although the settings are slightly limited in scope, that is the intent of the Custom Settings.
@@MaartenHeilbron Don't worry, no need to apologize. you were very helpful. thanx
How do you perfect the autofocus also how to keep the exposure balanced in different lighting like shade or over exposed?
Are the settings recommended in the video not working for you?
Hi Maarten! Thank you for this video. I have a question-my X-T4 is not giving me the option to turn on Face Detection, it's greyed out in the menu. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?
Hmmm??? Nothing comes to mind (assuming of course you're not in manual focus mode). Have you tried resetting the camera? That usually helps me out when I can't figure out what setting is blocking the one I want.
what a nice video, kinda reminds me of a professor proton of the camera world (big bang reference)
Got it, thanks for your kind words.
Thank you for the video. At 7:40 you mentioned that the metering is multi, is there a way to change the metering for video? I know for photo it's photometry and it works.
There is no metering option for video, it's all multi.
