Managed another vid in this week - discussing how sometimes your brain just gets FRIED with 40K lol - if youre just after the more Age of Strife bit - from 8:00 onward. Its interesting when these things come up and this one especially got me thinking - as I said at the end, if you have some specific puzzles and frustrations within the details of 40K drop them in the comments, maybe I'll get a chance to dissect it all further down the line - hope you all enjoy the XMAS time and all that stuff, I'll be back with some new stuff asap.

I felt the reasonable conclusion was that planets that "dealt" with their psyker problem decisively either through successful training/control or via purges faired best. Killing a psyker is probably a lot easier to figure out than training one so it was probably the more common success story. I also think that paves the way for the hundreds of thousands of worlds with middling or no real policy regarding psykers to be caught completely off guard by a sudden emergence. Regardless of how you cut it I thought it was still only a very few worlds that made it through the Age of Strife "Well".

hence real world witch hunts, and the real creed of nicea the 40k universe references,
a person's dark imaginings can certainly corrupt others,
I think that is what this free speech stuff the last few years has been about, a much more civilised witch hunt, to root out the heretics so they don't "warp" people's minds
i think the warp is a stand in for the zietgiest, or the collective imaginings we share, for example we all here know 40k, we have a collective understanding of it, but the details in universe are unreliable, but each of our individual imaginings of each character or event or look of certain things are different, hence the warp is always shifting, some parts of it will be more emphasised and be made more prevalent and cemented as an anchor in this sea that people can gather around or form rifts arguments and emotional strife.
its no different to religion really, but in religion i would say the aim is to actively learn from the examples given and apply those insights in your life,
in 40k i guess its escapism and fantasy for most people, but it had to be inspired by something in our real world

@@marekzielinski3598 500 worlds in Ultramar and not one of them had any problems with psykers in all the years before the Imperium showed up? That’s statistically impossible. They had to have some kind of policy regarding its psyker population. And like Luetin said in the video, to say they just purged them all doesn’t fully solve the issue. Besides, Ultramar has always been depicted as more forward thinking that other human domains. It makes sense that they would favor education and rigorous training of psykers rather than fanatically hunting them down as “witches”.

The thing I love about 40k is that it, either accidentally or deliberately, operates like the study of History, my first love.
It's all about understanding not just what is reported, but who is reporting, and their personal unconscious and deliberate bias. There's a wonderful discipline within History called Historiography, which, to put it in very simplistic ways, is the study of writing history, particularly how historians deal, or don't deal, with their inherent bias.
I'm not surprised Luetin made the mistake about psykers, because it makes no rational sense for a world that doesn't persecute psykers to suffer worse from Chaos. BUT... when you think about who wrote the histories of those worlds... ie the Empire... it makes sense that they would say that planets that were tolerant towards psykers would suffer worse, because it suits their fundamental desire to never illustrate a flaw in Imperial edicts.

hands down one of my biggest 'how does that make sense' aspects of 40k is the necrons...in general. yes, the 'retcrons' as some call them got the matt ward treatment and their lore become a bit of a jumbled mess, but im talking about even before that.
even way back in like 3rd edition, the lore stated that the necrontir as a species were pathetic dregs that lived on a blasted wasteland of a world that was dark, miserable and they basically just lived in underground bunker 'tombs' waiting to die.
so....how did they even get off the starting block? yes, theres mention of the c'taan uplifting them, but only after the necrontir FOUND the c'taan first, built them bodies etc. but HOW? the state of their planet implies limited resources and their lifestyle back then suggests extreme stagnation, so HOW did they gather enough technological advancement to even take the first step? it simply doesn't line up to me at all. they lack the motivation, opportunity AND resources to go anywhere but then SOMEHOW end up a space-faring species that can pokeball GODS and to my knowledge this is never actually addressed?

Basicaly at first things were nice and then ctan started to eat their sun turning them into bunker dwelling people and similar to the mechanicum they turned to technology though at that point their genetics were already fubar. One thing I’ve had a problem with is how Hive Worlds have breathable air. So I’ve heard it’s because even though they’ll chop down enough trees and pollute the vast majority of the planet to hell in order to get the resources and make space for manufacturing, but they’ll still leave enough forest to produce enough oxygen for the population to breath. Most notable of this is Armageddon and how after the second war for Armageddon surviving Orks hid away in a forest and they couldn’t just wipe out the forest and the Orks because they need some plant life right make oxygen for them.
My issue is that how can a forest big enough to make oxygen exist on a planet still survive if the vast majority of the planet is a desert, chemical lake, mined out hell hole? Hey Luetin, one of the things that always is in the back of my head is the enormous casualty count in every major battle, and yet none of the chapters or legions ever seem weakened. The books have constant massive battles and everyone is always dying - especially the traitor legions. Just look at the plague war series. By the end, Guiliman should have lost most of his entire fleet and men, and the traitors even more so. He had no reinforcements and there was no time to create hundreds of thousands of new space marines during that campaign. And we are to believe that all that relic armor and titans are so extremely rare and valuable, yet there seems to be no shortage of anything, ever. Another example is Devastation of Baal. I mean, how many space marines are there?

    • @NukeClock
      @NukeClock 2 роки тому +11

Just to add on that, so we have kartographed space from our planet. We would have never stopped doing that. The data gathered is compressable into kilobytes. Over 10-20-30-40 thousands of years, which is also just a slight glimps of the enterity of time, we have gathered the positions of observable lightspots and produced a MEGABYTE of data. Yet we have not a single fucking clue from where the Nids came from. Their arrival should have been recorded at some point, even before entering the Milky Way. They dont bend light around themselfs, it would have been mentioned if they did. At some point, an observable neighboring galaxy would have gone poof in a way that wouldnt have been explainable by normal means, that would have been observed, that would have been described as a special case, that record would stick out like a sore thumb. 10 or 20k years later, the great omnomnom starts.
Does the Warp extend further ? Who knows. It should. Lotsa things should. But they dont. If it would extend to other Galaxies, the MilkyWarp would have been aware of the literal only thing that spells unavoidable death to it besides entropy itself. Not even because the "warphivemind" or single parts of the warp share such a conciousness that would react out of such a fear, but the warp itself contains a reflection of everything that is already, at every point in time.
The whole of warhammer aint that broken and full of holes on purpose. Its just grown crooked like a Bonsai and a lot of its leafs are badly and lazily written. I stand by this until I die.

One thing that always bugged is the Imperiums technological "stagnation". While by and large the imperium is not an innovative faction to put things mildly. However, in several books it's mentioned that some imperial characters and factions have the newer and more advanced tech than others, and in few books worlds are mentioned that have advanced in technology. For example in on of the gaunt's ghosts books there is a world that was a feudal world but developed into an industrial world.
Perhaps there are worlds in the Imperium of man that do research and develop new technologies but with the sheer scale of the imperium it takes hundreds if not thousands of years for New technologies to become widely adopted.

The imperium did not regress to the literal dark age in term of scientific knowldge.
Basic things like firearms and their functiona are well understood so things like a ballistic assault rifle (basically an autogun altho autoguns are said to be caseless weapons) aren’t something the mechanicus is going to care much about wether its in restricting or taking charge of.
An industrial world is basically a late 20th century-early 21th century world in most technological aspects at least in my mind, the only real difference would be digital technology would probably not be as advanced or at least as widespread as our own (no smartphones or internet as we know it as the mechanicus essentially has the internet in an ultra advanced form known as noosphere but they wouldn’t want peoples to make copycats)
So most of the technologies on industrial/civilized worlds are very well understood by the mechanicus unlike STC techs
Think about it, sure today we can make fission reactor but can we even hope to make a plasma gun like the one in 40k? Hell no, thats tech millenias ahead of our own or at least centuries
The mechanicus isn’t completely tech illiterate, basic stuff like say a basic computer can be produced and isn’t going to be seen as ultra godly machine spirit to be worshipped
A lasgun isn’t the same a lasgun is a very advanced piece of fine technology (although produced en mass) and deserve specific care by the mechanicus during production

This subject always reminded me of abstinence only sex education. It's sounds like a good idea in theory, but the reality is that kid who are taught abstinence only are more likely to get pregnant than kids who are taught about safe sex.
You're never going to kill every psyker, and the ones that escape are going to use their abilities without understanding how to do so safely. I think the reality would be that the worlds which tried to purge psykers would actually end up fairing the worst because they would push many psykers underground where they would be way more susceptible to the influence of the ruinous powers.

As for the safe sex thing, turns out that people that studied those statistics have actually found out that, if I remember correctly, the abstinence thought kids fared way better statistically speaking.
There have been many times in my life that I was too nervous to go for sex, as opposed to someone who was thought that sex before marriage isn't a problem, and wouldn't be as nervous to take stupid risks.

It would make some sense that worlds where psykers were actively encouraged to the point of properly training and regulating them would be safer than those that simply tolerated them, in other words, the two extremes of murdering them all (such as on knight/feudal worlds) and properly regulating and training them all (like Prospero) would survive the best to warp fudgery.

What if psycher density is very important for daemonic invasions? What if there is a threshold of psychic energy that needs to be reached in order to have proper daemonic activity? If that is the way it works, then perhaps daemons could be allowed to pass, but in lower number and of lesser quality. Maybe more beast-like warp things could occasionally spawn and terrorize the peasants. That could also serve as mythology on these worlds, and as more fuel to persecute and attempt to find psychers

Trained psychers can also locate psychers. The witch eye can feel and see the density of warp energy miles away, with a bigger group, you can scan the entire planet. If you train more psychers, you can have them locate other untrained psychers or people who don't know they are channeling the warp.
Prosperine trainings of the planet Prospero which would then be tweaked by Magnus and become the teachings, mantras, Enumerations, allows psychers to directly control and limit the flow of energies within their bodies. With such training, they can even lock parts of their powers and restraint themselves as to not burst out or explode.
Just have psychers always travel in groups and never alone, since a psycher can save a psycher from exploding by subjugating them through: Knocking them out, locking their powers, helping them control their powers..etc.
----The Blood Angels knocked Mephiston out when he was bursting with energy and killing unintentionally killing people around him, even Astartes. Knocking a bursting psycher out works well.
----The Thousand Sons are always attentive and quickly uses their mantras and Enumerations to aid their brothers who are becoming uncontrollable.
---Just as there are wards and restraints to limit daemons as they are beings of warp energy, there are wards that can suppress the power of psychers. If a powerful psycher puts a ward on a psycher below his power level, it is nearly impossible for them to break it by themselves.
Psychers can also forcefully absorb the energies of another through channeling. The Thousand Sons have been doing this method by draining the other psyches and channeling them to create a great pool of energy for a spell.
This kind of channeling can also theoretically be used to forcefully drain the bursting energy of a mad psycher then channeling them outside. This method will drain them of energy and subjugate them, and with wards and runes you can even lock their powers. Ahriman created mental wards and locks which severely weakened his warp channeling ability during his time as a wandering psycher. Such methods of locking and ward restraints turned him from one of the strongest psychers to a low level psycher.
The problem with untrained psychers is that their channel uncontrollably. To make the chance of exploding or turning into a daemon portal non-existent, you'd need:
1.Trainings like the Enumerations of the Thousand Sons
      2. Limiters like wards and magic restraints
      3. Artifacts, and mediums for channeling so you don't fully use your own frail and weak body to channel the destructive power of the warp.
*Staffs or channeling mediums are very Important, there is only a limit to how much the frail and weak human body can handle the energies of the warp. If one keeps using his own body without channeling mediums, then they will surely turn into warp portals or explode.
With these, the chances of turning into warp portals is non-existent.
-----The trainings and Enumerations will guide the flow of warp energy
----The wards put on you will prevent you from going against your limit in channeling or handling warp energy. Have the wards or sorcerous restraints give extreme pain or knock them out if they ever try to go against their limit, it's that easy.
----The artifacts or channeling mediums will remove the burden of channeling from you.

Such as the Lucius Pattern Lasgun (used by the Death Korp of Krieg) is more akin to that of a WW1 or WW2 standard infantry rifle like the M1 Grand or the Mauser Gewehr 98 in function. Or the Kantrael and Triplex Pattern Lasgun (used by the Cadian Shock Troopers and Valhallan Ice Warriors respectively) which is described to function similar to our modern day military firearms like the M27 IAR and the AK-12. Meanwhile in game all Lasguns are Rapidfire(1) S3 AP0 W1, regardless of regiment or lasgun model being used. "The pod before him was a clone of his father's, but growing faint and indistinct before his eyes. The ground was dark, the night sky was starless, and for a moment Argel Tal wasn't sure whether he stood on the surface of a world or the deck of a powered down ship. As his senses faded, he caught a momentary glimpse through the viewplate on the pod´s bulky front. What ever moved within the incubator had too many limbs to be a lone child"
    //The first Heretic, P:312
It is heavily implied that the excerpt is a description of the twin primarchs, but in his titular book he was on Terra alone, without his twin. Is this a retcon? or could the one in the pod in fact be one of the lost primarchs, with a mutation that gave him multiple limbs?

When a psyker goes mad, it's has world ending consequences, any attempt at training them to include them into society, is more likely to fail than succeed, also there is literally nothing stopping a psyker from growing too confident in their abilities if they are tolerated, it only takes one psyker going supernova to fuck an entire planet
Exterminating them is really the only surefire way to handle them, it takes massive organisation's with infinite resources like the imperium to even begin the process of training and tolerating them, and keep doing so despite the numerous failures that are guaranteed to happen

But he also started with barely any resources, his armies clad in primative armour and carrying pathetic weapons. Only slowly building up the tech level while fighting...who knows what? But whatever it was it seems far more exciting and nerve wracking than an entire legion of fully equipped Astartes showing up one day and conquering yet another planet. A much fairer fight.
Then there's all the questions involved too. Why now? Why not launch the campaign sooner? The Age of Strife had lasted 5000 years by this point. And if the Emperor has truly been around for sooooooo long then why did he seem to be in such an incredible hurry? Going from millenia of doing who-knows-what (but not in the world conquering business) to conquering the galaxy in 2-3 hundred years. Why not a more patient approach?

One thing that always bothered me is how could pre fall Eldar coexist with dark age of technology humanity, seemingly even peacefully. Weren't Eldar by that point just like Dark Eldar but much more wide spread and numerous? How could they tolerate presence of Monkeigh in their galaxy without a hitch? Wouldn't they start hunting humans for fun like Drukhari of 40k do? Wouldn't that lead to clash between two empires ? Also it speak volumes to the resillience of greenskin infestation that they survived for millenia in galaxy ruled by these two superpowers.

Most of the lore about pre-fall Eldar seems to suggest that they were just progressively ignoring the rest of the galaxy as they turned inwards on themselves. If you think about it, it makes sense that as they became more hedonistic they wouldn't really pay attention to anyone else. They have all of their needs met, and they use an exclusive means of traveling that in no way requires them to interact with the outside galaxy. In my opinion, having access to the fully operational web way for their species' essentially entire existence was their greatest downfall because it allowed them to ignore the conditions of the warp.
Its kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation though. If the old ones had closed off the webway before they disappeared, then the necrons would have possibly been unmanageable . . . . but by leaving it open the Eldar never had to earn their dominion over the galaxy the hard way like everyone else.

In fact, the craftworld eldar have to venture into the Eye whenever their supplies of spirit stones run low, because the Crone Worlds are the primary source of material that they need to craft them in the first place . . . so they can never escape the reality of how much they have lost since they have to constantly revisit the twisted and dead remains of their old homelands.

Before the Warhammer Crime series they were mostly depicted as their inspiration Judge Dredd. Brutal and always in the middle of the action. But every mention of them in the last few years has been more like the US-american FBI, wielding authority on an interplanetary scale and not getting involved in planetary affairs as long as no severe accusations have been raised against said planet (like blatant corruption that leads to mismanagement or not fulfilling the tithe). Instead Enforcers/Sanctioners seem to have filled the Judge Dredd role. Anyway, that was the bit of lore that grinds my gears 24/7. Two things I would say. In terms of things that "annoy" me in the lore, it strikes me as strange that while the Emperor was "alive" he didnt share his knowledge on how to do everything and make everything, ie, why are STCs necessary? He was alive during the Golden Age of Technology so I would imagine he knew everything that would be in ever STC, right? As far as your mistake goes, I think its a case of life imitating art, essentially - the lore is so complex that even the people within the fictional universe get things wrong and have to draw inferences, so its only logical that we would do the same, in my view. :o)

No, big E couldn't have learned every single STC for several reasons. Honestly, I don't think it was his focus at the end of the day, so his intelligence didn't manifest in that way (most of the reason for that, as far as I can tell, has to do with his view of power, probably because of the world as it's presented).

If you want something to talk about, something I have always found unclear it is the Imperial Cult, Imperial Truth & Cult Mechanicus. Something that has always irked me in 40k is the very basic take on religion that we get given, I would mostly put this down to the background of the people who developed the universe, mostly being atheistic or agnostic leaning men from Nottingham, needless to say they have a very "just so" perspective on what religion is and can be, the lore of 40k was written in the heyday of Christianity losing much of its lustre amonst the masses in the UK and it shows. As a result 40k has a very rigid western Christian perspective on religion showing what is basically an oversimplified stereotyped parody of how Christianity existed in Northwest Europe during roughly the 1300s but with none of the nuance or understanding of how and why it developed the way it did.
Religion is one of the most complex and multifaceted aspects of human culture but in 40k it seems to be boiled down to pure fanaticism and dark ages mumbo jumbo, which is not how it was historically even in the dark ages and not how it would be in the 42nd millennium and there is little exploration of the philosophy of the imperial cult outside of its admittedly very cool gothic aesthetic.
If we were to cut it down academically we can generally agree that religions exhibit four main features, those being practices surrounding ethics, community, metaphysics and ritual, it does not have to involve a god or indeed anything super natural but this seems to be lost on the writers. Indeed, there are many atheistic religions like Daoism or some branches of Buddhism or purely beauraucratic religions like Confucianism, even ideologies like Communism etc can be construed as religious movements using some defenitions. So was the emperor trying to eliminate all religious things including ideologies and religious cultures or did he simply want to eliminate theism? How did the ecchlesiarchy get trillions of people to subscribe to single general dogma. How has technology or knowledge among the upper classes of the warp not affected the way religion works in this universe? Did the emperor intentionally create a wave of nihilism (imperial truth) to overtake humanity during the age of strife so that his own imperial cult could grow in the now barren ideological soil? Did the Emperor actually secretly support the fostering of the imperial cult? Why does the emperor need temples that look like churches? What are the ethics, rituals, communitarian aspects and metaphysics of the imperial cult that makes people find it so compelling even 10000 years after the practical "death" of the emperor? I think this topic is well worth a look.

    • @fabrikator-generalakhilley6896
      @fabrikator-generalakhilley6896 2 роки тому

Daoism can be and often is practiced alongside the common "faiths" including China's semi-extinct imperial cult, so it can go either way. Communism is hardline anti-superstition and deity-worship and is in no way religious, which is one of the reasons it gets so much adversity, even among other Socialists. (The various "gods" are essentially just "magical aristocrats" according to much of the surviving folklore, and they would conflict with the authority of the state as well as lead to a priveledged "caste"(read: ecclesiarchy).) The 40k "Imperial Truth" as taught by the Emperor pre-HH wasn't nihilism but rather Nietschean Existentialism. The Emperor is the Perfect Man(U:bermensch) and He wills to empower Humanity collectively to this level to thrive amongst the stars pursuing their own(hopefully wholesome) desires free of xeno/daemonic oppression.

      Lemme try to tackle this.
"How did the ecchlesiarchy get trillions of people to subscribe to single general dogma."
They didn't. The Imperial Cult is as varied as the concept of statehood. In both cases there's a very vague set of commonalities to which are attached hundreds of non-overlapping ideas.
"How has technology or knowledge among the upper classes of the warp not affected the way religion works in this universe?"
It has. That's why there's such an overlap between the Imperial Cult and the Cult Mechanicum. Even people that subscribe to the Imperial Truth such as inquisitors tend to believe in machine spirits for example.
"Why does the emperor need temples that look like churches?"
Everything in 40k looks like a church from factories to schools.
"What are the ethics, rituals, communitarian aspects and metaphysics of the imperial cult that makes people find it so compelling even 10000 years after the practical "death" of the emperor?"
See above. It's REALLY loose. Think of it less as a religion and more as a mix of "Greet when entering a room", "Don't touch corpses" and "Consider the day of being made up of 12 units made up of 6 units made up of 60 units" style commonalities.
"eliminate all religious things including ideologies and religious cultures or did he simply want to eliminate theism?"
It was broadly speaking "eliminate belief in the supernatural".
Here is my interpretation: The way religion works in 40k is that many religions have a few kernels of truth about Chaos that when put together form the Primordial Truth. That was how Lorgar canonically found Chaos. He used his massive amount of brain capacity and resources to puzzle out how things _actually_ worked.
The ban on religion was effectively an accompaniment to the ban on AI; A way to prevent the (re)creation of a runaway reaction that'd eventually end with extinction.

The STC question always intrigued me from an industry point. If I had to rationalise the reason trade exists it would be down to the idea that STC are like Haynes Manuals, but much more advanced obviously. So an STC for a tank would be for that specific tank, like a Leman Russ or the sector equivelant, so a Forge World would still need food, materials, and a work force to assemble parts, like an assembly line, and make moulds for barrels.

As a fan of the lore side of WH40K, I really appreciate the way you consolidate very broad, loosely conveyed topics we read in the books. Curious to know, which do you prefer, reading the books or listening? I've gone to listening to Horus Heresy series due to volume (and I can listen at work) but read all others.
Thank you for your content and honest attempts at keeping it all together. You're a class act, sir.

I think you raise a really interesting point with the differences in psychic powers. Take for example sorric (think that’s how it’s spelt) from the gaunts ghosts books, whose powers manifest as paper messages appearing in his pocket that tell him the future. It seems that in some cases they can be very subtle and fairly easy to hide.

Thank you so much! I think you also mentioned this a couple years ago and I've wondered about it ever sense.

I wish we had more information on the power of Faith. Especially a little clarification if this is another manifestation of psychic power or something altogether different.

Trying to rationalize lore and scant details of it in an actual pragmatic way that gived it actual sense is the thing I love the most about your videos. A topic i'd like you to do this with would have to be actually delving into the everchanging power scale from a normla human all the way to the Big E and perhaps even trying to figure out and/or giving an actual reason in lore for that discrepancy. It may not be as ellegant or deep as other subjects at first glance, but I think once delved into it, you oughta find some cool concepts and avenues to venture into :D

You should make a video about demonic incursion. I remember reading about an incident where a boy became a portal for nurgle on an agri-world and it sounded pretty horrific. I’d love for a lore video about demonic incursions like that
