      I agree.
However I'd like to point out.
if one is in the insurance business, and obviously there's a profit motive,
This can be achieved with managing risk.
      ..
It would be fair to suggest. If one could afford a range rover then perhaps they're likely to be a more responsible owner driver..
      ..
There's also the aspect of reinsurance to further mitigate financial exposure/risk.
      ..
So I'm not entirely convinced it's a financial issue.
      More one of social engineering....

I know someone who works for a major well-known insurance company (which I won't name for obvious reasons) which was apparently approached by JLR with a view to setting up a JLR insurance scheme for their vehicles, presumably meaning that they would get a lot of high-premium clients referred to them by JLR dealers. They politely declined, apparently the risk was considered just too great.

The reality is all car manufacturers are fitting cheap so-called security features to their vehicles, that promise the earth. A Ghost immobiliser costs around £500. If car companies developed something like that, they could implement it in all their vehicles, which might add £20 to the price, and more importantly, it would be integrated into the existing looms.

    Hi
Really enjoy your discussions about JLR. This is the response we had from our local land rover garage when we enquired about getting our 2018 land rover discovery security recall
'We have checked your vehicle, and this is not scheduled for any theft mitigation update at this moment and without this being scheduled on the recall section we are unable to carry this out'.
Not great is it. Now having to pay to fit a Ghost Alarm.

If I owned one of the theft stricken LR's, I would just remove the fuel pump fuse or relay if I was worried about it getting stolen, or any other fuse or relay that would imobalise it, a simple hidden switch on that circuit would probably be a more user freindly, and cost probablly less tha £10 in parts......but then I work on cars for a living. Considering the cost of a Land Rover it should have a mobile SIM disabler where the car can be totally disabled if stolen and in a no start, and safe fixed steering mode (enabled until stops ) unless the owner and the manufacturer enter their codes, plus trackers should be standard. There are other measures which could also be added but they would cost a lot more.

It's interesting seeing all these videos about insurance with JLR. I won't say specifically where I am located for obvious reasons, lets just say I am in a big city in Scotland. First of all, I've been looking at used LR, just struggling to decide which vehicle to go for. So naturally in the process of research I've done a load of soft insurance quotes. As an example, I was quoted double what my current insurance is on a RR Evoque 18 plate before I learned of all these issues with getting the cars insured. I added 3 drivers to my insurance and the price plummeted down to my normal insurance rate. So I was able to get insurance and it wasn't stupidly expensive, which is interesting hearing about the rest of people struggling. Perhaps it's different up here compared to London etc. I also feel like I see a fair amount of LR cars on the road, and reports of vehicle theft are next to none really. Maybe I am lucky where I live in this instance.

Second, why do they feel we want or need an upgrade? If JLR concentrated more on improving reliability than worrying about face-lifting & adding even more tech I think more owners would be willing to stay loyal to lands rover

I bought my landrover feb 2023- a 2019 vogue autobiography, a beauty. I paid 7.3k for my first insurance premium for the year, it was a stretch but also a huge dream of mine to gift that car for myself so I made it happen. I’m 25 so it’s not bad considering theft was peaking and I am London based. Acorn my insurer have refused to insure me for my renewal, my premium has finished and my car is sitting in the driveway and blocked off by another vehicle in hope to secure its safety as an uninsured Range Rover in London. Landrover will not even insure their own vehicles and also stated that 30 years old is the minimum age! Not to mention the car was purchased for 56k, an absolute gorgeous car and top spec. This vehicle has now dropped to 31k as current value. What on earth do I do when obtaining insurance has become impossible and the lowest quote I received was 17k! The vehicle is costing me £600 a month parked up. Huge market crash and personally Range Rover won’t be doing anything about it any time soon. Utter BS and there should be routes of communication, compensation or some sort of hope where the vehicles can retain and obtain a decent market value for their customers. I wish I sold my car sooner as every month it’s costing me and every day is a risk with no insurance. My frustration is towards insurance providers where they should not refuse current or new costumers willing to pay and have already paid high premiums to continue the use of their land rovers, especially when some in which are in low crime areas or have ghost immobliser etc like myself, they don’t even care. The Land Rover name is refused alone. The value of 31k is an AVERAGE price of a car now so those that say the vehicle is ‘expensive’ are wrong in thinking that’s the reason. I’ve tried underwriters, brokers, everyone you could possibly name and it is impossible to obtain any sort of short term, long term insurance. Every avenue that I take is a 15-20k loss for me in a space of 12 months. I had already invested over 20k into this vehicle so the market crash and value depreciation was an absolute disaster. Nevertheless great vid, glad I came across it as i now know that I’m not alone and going crazy.

I commented before on one of your videos, I had a Disco Sport HSE Luxury, I bought it used, I was the 3rd owner, paid £22.5K for it. I'm not wealthy, I'm a working man, an electrician. My car is my only vice in life, I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, and I don't go on foreign holidays. That's how I can afford the cars I buy, they're pretty much all I spend money on.
Land Rover dealers (Lookers, in my case), do the brand no favours, the way they treat customers is terrible, in my experience. So that was one reason for getting rid of the Disco Sport, it had it's issues, but I (eventually) got them sorted, the dealership fixed 2 of them, I gave up trying to get them to fix the original issue (the adblue injector wiring) and fixed it myself. The insurance played a role too, my insurance jumped (keeping in mind I'm 50, no accidents, claims or convictions in 35+ years of driving), from about £300 to almost £1000, and that was from my original, big insurance company, to the lowest quote, from Dodgy Dave's Auto Insurance. Quotes from companies I've heard of were either over £1400, had a stupid compulsory excess, mostly in the region of £1000, for context, I usually have a £0 compulsory excess (or maybe £200, if they don't offer zero) and £0 voluntary, some had a minimum "voluntary" excess of £400+
The car itself, once I had the issues sorted, 2 of which (steering rack bolts & adblue injector wiring), should have been fixed before the car was sold to me, was absolutely great. Spacious, comfortable, decent on fuel, smooth driver, could handle being off road with normal tires... But the surrounding nonsense made me wish I'd never traded in my C-Class, so I traded in the Disco Sport for an Insignia, took an absolute bath on the deal, even though I negotiated a good price, I'd only had the Disco for a year, so was still in negative equity, as they say...
Next time I buy an SUV, it won't be a Land Rover, I'm looking at maybe a Mitsubishi, Nissan or a Toyota... There's always the GLE too. I quite like those. 🤔

The problem with Land Rover's own insurance is as said in the video they launched it too early but still the website is not seemingly offering insurance to the public but only new & approved used owners from JLR dealers
It seems to me they rushed out the insurance broker just to be able to stop the dealers complaining customers were not collecting cars as they couldn't purchase insurance and JLR are now taking that loss
Time will tell if they actually do allow any old Landy owner to purchase insurance through them but I doubt it

The root of the problem is not that people can't get insurance. The root of the problem is that they are too vulnerable to theft, resulting in too many insurance claims, which then results in insurance companies stepping away. That is a situation that could sink JLR if they don't address it. Offering a JLR insurance is only a short term tactical fix. The proper long term strategic fix is to address the theft issues with a recall. Once that is solved then insurance companies will open up their policies again. If this isn't addressed immediately then JLR could get wiped out. I certainly wouldn't buy any JLR, whether new or used, right now.

Just stumbled onto your channel. You make some interesting points, however, because you have a UA-cam channel, I think the manufacturer is being polite. I’m sure you’re aware companies are in the business of making profit. In this case selling cars and if they can’t sell or not selling, they will do something about it or go bust. As the saying goes you pays your money, and you takes your choice. Common sense tells me if customers can’t get insurance they won’t buy the car and will switch to another manufacturer.

There are rumours that JLR have gone into partnership with some insurance companies and keep recommending them to jaguar and range rover owners. The problem is that even those insurance companies are asking for an arm and a leg which favours them both as the profit is split between the dealership and the insurance company. If JLR weren't making money out of this they could stop these theft within a week by replacing the ignition modules. They simply don't want to. I lost 15 grand in 15 months.

The problem of relay theft of keyless entry cars has been around for a fair while. It would be possible to defeat this technique and give the systems about the same level of security as the old manually-triggered rolling code fob/plings if the systems measured the round-trip times for the signals exchanged between the car and the fob. This would be proof against the relay attack as the system would know the fob was not close to the car. The timings needed are in the nanosecond parish but there are range imaging chips in mobile phones that do this sort of timing so it's not exactly cutting edge technology. I cannot believe that this has not been incorporated in some of the systems already so why are manufacturers still pushing out cars that are vulnerable to relay-attacks?

    • @ColinMill1
      @ColinMill1 7 місяців тому +1

@@bentullett6068 Indeed! Back in the early days of remote central locking the security was poor. The fobs just emitted one code that did both lock and unlock functions and it was ridiculously easy to receive, record and transmit the code using a 433MHz transceiver. The chips needed could be bought from places like Maplin for a few quid. The rolling code system put a crimp in that little scheme because the codes were only used once and replaying an old code to the car got you nowhere. The systems included anti-scanning techniques that detected anyone trying to hit on the right code by firing loads of codes at the car (I managed to lock a neighbour out of his car for a while by accident while fooling about with a 433MHz transmitter 🙂). The keyless systems seem a huge backwards step in security after decades of advance.

Rather than the software saying you cant get insurance how about it also gives out a telephone number you can ring (freephone) and you get to talk to someone who hopefully should be able to sort insurance out, well unless its actually not a software glitch and they won't insure them.
Secondly talk to a few well know ex-car thieves and find a solution to some of the theft issues to make them harder to be stolen, then impliment them changes and then insure these vehicles.
On the other issue re flood damage just offer a replacement vehicle and make it ahy within the LRJ group so if you have a range rover but decide nope lets have a Jaguar thats acceptable, the good will and cost will easily over 4-5 years be cheaper than the cost of advertising for that same level and impact of good will.
They can then sell the vehicles they exchanged in this day and age someone will buy them individually or in larger quantaties.
