My friend and I changed the fuel injectors on my neighbors supercharged Jaguar. It took almost 2 days of driving for the cats to finally clear up and quit smoking.
I did not have that issue when I changed mine on a 2005 XJR. Also I have had very few issues with my 2013 Range Rover HSE. Its heavy on gas but I do not commute in it. The XJR was amazingly good with fuel economy. I did have a water/meth injection system on it.
Dude, don’t listen to anybody. I am a fan of them also. I bought my LR three probably eight years ago and I love it. Like you, I fix my own vehicle and save myself probably tens of thousands of dollars doing so. Considering that most garages want $500 to replace $50 spark plugs. That take 10 minutes and while I’m at it I always replace my ignition coils at the same time. The point being that, as I said in another post… If you love these vehicles, they are a labor of love. But when they are running good, there is nothing else on the road like them. The air shocks in mine are heavenly. You don’t feel any bump on the road. It is the smoothest running vehicle I’ve ever felt Not to mention the 15 speaker surround sound system in it. If you love these vehicles, then you’re going to be willing to work on them to keep them running well. If you can’t bring yourself to go under the hood, then you’re going to spend tens of thousands of dollars fixing $1000 worth of parts that you could replace yourself in minutes, if not an hour or so. So keep enjoying it, like I enjoy mine. The naysayers, maybe they had some horrible experiences with theirs… And maybe, they took them to a garage and probably almost passed out at what they wanted to charge them to fix the stupidest and easiest of things. Hope you had a merry Christmas and have a wonderful new year.
Pretty sure the heavy smoking is because the ECM had cranked down the long term fuel delivery because of the rich reading form the senor on the exhaust and now when the injectors actualy works the short term compensation have to adjust the delivery untill long term gets to a normal level again.

Last year I spent $19K on a 2012 L322 with 60K miles. It had never left Miami, never seen a dirt road, and lived it's entire life in a garage. I took it for an inspection at Land Rover and they confirmed all scheduled maintenance had been completed in Miami, including the 100K service. I've had zero problems. I put some black L405 wheels on it and the car is SICK! I get compliments everywhere. I love NEW old things.
Good job on the fuel injectors, I was rooting for ya. I wonder if you turned the fuel rail bolts out of the head just enough to place a washer or a thin piece of steel over the bolt holes on the head. Keep the fuel rail attached to the injectors and turn the bolts evenly to back out all injectors on that rail at once? So, back out the first bolt on the fuel rail just enough to slide a washer in, the washer hole is too small for the bolt to pass through and it's a durable washer. Then turn the fuel rail bolt clockwise like you're going to tighten the fuel rail back to the head. Repeat this for all bolts, get them snug. Then start torquing them like you would a cam shaft to evenly pull out all injectors on that rail. The fuel rail looked like aluminum so it might take the force. IDK I use this technique to widen the clasp on a steering knuckle to fit a new strut base in sometimes. Merry Christmas!
Glad you fixed it man. I work for JLR in the uk building the evouqe and discovery sport. We've actually climbed up the rankings in JD powers, gone from bottom to middle so we are getting better.
You are spot on about the ride of these trucks. Nothing is more comfortable than one of these and it feels like you are riding on air. My wife loved hers.
The thing with these "fake" injectors is that they are probably from the same factory the real ones came from, but simply failed testing or were binned in a worse performing selection. The factory then makes some shady deal and the cheap injectors still reach the market and look identical while performing far worse.
I don't know where you get that idea. Real Bosch stuff is all made in the EU, not China. They have strict quality control, even if it is in Bulgaria or Greece.
i work in a factory that makes tpms sensors and a lot of marginal failed parts where going missing instead of being scrapped, turned out one of the shifts Q.A engineers was stealing them by the box load and selling them on ebay. police where involved and a lot of people where interviewed, end result was he got sacked but no charges where pressed against him... not sure why but probably the company didn't want the bad publicity. so yes a lot of parts flood the market that aren't just fakes but stolen property
Hi Samcrac! Thank you for a wonderfull show. I'm please to see you've gone the mile with this one and as always when you do your videos show how skillfull you truly are. You finalized this one! Wish you and your family all the best! Best regards from a big fan from Tromsø, Norway!
Tromso is an amazing place. it is beautiful there . 12 years ago I drove my old BMW all over Scandinavia and got there - I was delighted. You don't know how much I regret not choosing to work there.
Congrats Sam on a stunner of a vehicle. I applaud you for explaining why you buy Rovers. It's refreshing when YTube is full of creators grabbing cheap, damaged, auctioned Rovers for content and hits. I have friends with Rovers and they maintain and look after them like spoiled children and almost never have major issues. Gremlins yes but nothing major. They have to be looked after well.
A modern vehicle shouldn't have to be cuddled like a Faberge egg. If a company like Hyundai can create a luxury division like genesis and have generally reliable vehicles from the start why can't Range Rover make reliable vehicles after all they have been making them for decades.
@@williamegler8771 Hyundai's are Korean Hyundai's that have horrible resale value. They are No way close to a Range Rover. Korean's copy every Euro car out there... I own 2009 RRS Supercharged and a 2018 RR LWB... they are wonderful cars that I drive all day..
Yeah, I'm sure the back seat was planned for owners like Sam to wait in comfort for the tow truck or enjoy the company of his step-mother! I still enjoy your Rover stories though, very fascinating.
I totally join you: I you haven't tried a RR, you can't understand the experience. I guess it's why so many people still dream of these cars and why RR is such a success. 3 years ago, I would have never imagined owning one, especially due to its bad reputation. The previous owner lent it to me for a month prior deciding whether buying or not. And boy, there was no more turning back !!! Definitely more expensive than driving a toyota, but don't forget the pleasure it awakens. It has become a passion and I follow you 1000% Samcrac, whatever you hapiness costs ;).
I always like what Land Rover dealerships would do. Back in the late '80s and early '90s each dealership had challenges right on their property so you could feel and learn how to take it off road. They had a fake hill they had some rocks then they had one where you put the front tire on and move up slowly and you could see how much flex was built in to the vehicle. I know there's something else they had cannot think of it off the top of my head. I absolutely love the one that you are working on now. They really up their game on interior. Look forward to watching your next video. I hope you have a great holiday.
DO NOT TAKE THE CAP OFF THE INJECTORS BEFORE INSTALLATION, The teflon seal starts to expand once the cap is removed, which is how it seals itself to the cylinder head, you have about a 5-15 minute window to install the injector once the cap is removed
There is a seal tool part number JLR9899. Removal of teflon seal makes no difference, the tool is designed to be used in a two stage procedure, once performed you have 10 minutes to seat the injectors and rail per JLR procedure.
I don't understand this comment. The cap on the tip doesn't cover the teflon seal. The teflon seal is installed, and I didn't touch them. There is no install window. There is a tool to install NEW teflon seals on old injectors; the only way I could've removed these would've been to cut them off; this is how stupid information spreads.
@@Samcrac This was my bad, most GDI engine injectors have the cap going over the seal to keep the injector seal compressed until installation, this is the case with the N54 injectors for instance, I thought I saw the same here. The N54 installation time is 5-15 minutes once the cap is removed in order to allow for proper expansion into the head of the engine.
@@Samcrac Indeed. I was once told in all seriousness that engineers at the Cosworth F1 engine factory were so skilled they didn't need to use torque wrenches...
The compression trick will work but there's potential damage when the ejector pops. Like a Champagne cork, you want to protect the cork flying out, the environment it might hit, and the stuff behind it that wasn't supposed to come gushing out (Champagne-fluid and cylinder gasses). As the whether to replace 8 or 4... the task of bisecting a repair is actually a good one and few mechanics have learned the difficult task of dividing by two. The analogy is trying to figure out which of your 32 electrical breakers at the house powers that one outlet you want to work on. You COULD go one by one (32 tests). You COULD bisect, which means, turn 1/2 off (16 breakers off, 16 breakers on, one test). If the power is still on, flip all the off breakers to on and half the remaining on---> off, or if it's off, restore 8 (8 breakers left either way, 2 tests done). Repeat the process and you'll find that target breaker in [math warning log(2)n=5] 5 tests. TO make that analogy work on the injectors, you have 8. Swap out 4. No change = put old ones in, use 2 on other bank of 4. No change? Move 2 to the ones you swapped and swap 1 of the remaining. No change? The one you didn't swap is the issue. Was there a change? The one you swapped was the issue. You're testing 1 (4) +1 (2) +1 (1) for a total of 3 tests. You use no more than 4 new injectors at any given time and if you're running them for a few seconds the cost is minimal. [Math. log(2)8=3, or 2^3=8... So if you have 8 items to test of which one is bad, 3 tests will take you to it. Even if two are bad, you'll find them in logarthimicaly less time and money and effort than just replacing them all... End math..] Glad you got this working the way you want. Took a LOT of tries, a LOT of your time, and some fails... but if you have the TIME, the KNOWHOW, and are willing to use it, well, there's your just as good as new Range Rover Reward :-)
I was hoping that this would end with Sam loading up Uncle Rich, Stepmom, and the Caribbean mechanic and going Christmas caroling, but I guess the fact that the car runs now is enough of a Christmas miracle.
Sam it's your channel I enjoy every video you post. Swapping from cars, suv' s, trucks and exotics is awesome. I even wanted come down and turn a wrench because not every day a person can touch something like that. Keep it up and enjoy what you do that's my philosophy.
@@The_North0 Petrol is currently £1.55 a litre, which for US readers, converts to US$7.25 per US gallon at current exchange rates. The cost of diesel converts to US$8.18 per US gallon. So my guess here is there's no a great demand for big thirsty cars, and those that do want one don't want it in white.
I've used the injector trick with cranking over the enige. I've used it on diesel engines that had leaking seals for a while with loads of build up. Works like a charm.
I don’t dislike Range Rovers as I can appreciate how good they are ‘when’ they work. However as an engineer I’m appalled by the quality which still hasn’t been addressed after many years. I think I’ll just stick with my Landcruiser
They sell ALL of their products at a premium price. They have no reason to make them any better since their customers lease them. I don't know about repeat customers, but they still continue to sell without any adverse effect on their volume.
@0:37 No, it is just realistic. Only a few people are able to turn a not so cracing deal into a cracing deal when it comes to Range Rovers. You need the skills, the knowledge and a UA-cam channel. ☺ @4:30 That may be the case but the dealer will make sure he has a more than healthy profit margin in those parts. 🙂
i think all the crap at the end on the interior is only available on the autobiography trim which you said you didn't understand the premium price point?
Sadly the knock offs are so good “looking” I won’t buy any car parts off eBay unless I know it’s a dealer. This is a lesson hard learned by most people that buy parts off eBay. I bought a maf once to save $20. It almost left me stranded, but I learned my lesson well. In almost all cases go Oem on anything electrical, unless there is no other choice. Otherwise, name brand from reputable dealer- reputable dealer is the key. Not someone with just a bunch of sales. Plenty of people get taken, including me. Thanks Sam for encouraging me again to never consider buying one of these money pits. I always love your videos regardless.
Amazing! Thank you Sam for sharing this video. Yes, that was a great bargain for a Range Rover. I love Range Rovers & I have 3 Classic Range Rovers & 2 Classic Jaguas that are not running now & they all need major rebuilt/restore and spray paint jobs. I understand to respray a Range Rover it loses its value from the factory? If I am going to buy a used & loved Range Rover or any car I rather buy that from you due to your honesty & througher checks of components you do especially if you are fixing a component you do a excellent job on repairs! Keep up the great work. Greetings from Madang, Papua New Guinea!
Did you change the oil after completing the injector change? If not, that’s what caused your heavy smoke. I am a JLR tech and when these injectors stick they can put a ton of fuel in the crankcase. This will smoke your bearings so ensure you change that oil.
Hope you and you family have a happy and wonderful holiday, wish you and your a great new year also. Thank you for the videos and information you have given all of us this year.
Merry Christmas,Sam. FINALLY winning with a Range Rover. I would stay away from expensive cars if I were you. Cheap stuff is easier to sell and cheaper to fix.
I pulled injectors out of an AJ133 recently. I've done it on two different engines. It took some time, but never had to resort to anything other than the slide hammer tool that is made for it.
I have enjoyed your Range Rover videos. You got a killer deal with the white Autobiography - awesome vehicle. I am a long term Rover owner and mine have been pretty much trouble free. Love them!
Thank you Sam for another ace video and a with a pleasing outcome. I find myself wanting a Range Rover; I'm a Brit but I've never had one - it's taken an American to change my mind. Great channel with interesting cars, keep them coming. All the best for 2023.
Love the videos man! randomly stumbled upon this channel a week ago and it has taught me so much about cars! I own a tacoma so hopefully it wont be seeing the shop anytime soon, but It has been a great learning experience!
A technical service bulletin was released for your vehicle for this fault "invalid data received from gateway A." The correction is to have the Symptom Driven Diagnostic ( SDD ) reprogrammed to resolve this issue.
Years ago I bought an old Corvette and a Corvette club member asked if I wanted to join the club. All the cars in the club were a lot newer than mine, why? He explained that it was easier to buy or lease a new car and have it serviced under warranty. When the factory warranty runs out, you trade the car in on a new one. I see that as the best way to enjoy other high cost maintenance vehicles also, like Range Rovers and BMW.

Compressed air blow out the well around injector or spark plug Before removal that way nothing falls in

The thing with these "fake" injectors is that they are probably from the same factory the real ones came from, but simply failed testing or were binned in a worse performing selection. The factory then makes some shady deal and the cheap injectors still reach the market and look identical while performing far worse.
Looking at the spray patterns and the fact two were DOA leads me to believe you're right.
Based on experience with manufacturing in China this is 100% true.
They are made by Bosch, I don’t think they would do that. It’s Chinese just copying it with poor quality

@@Samcrac did you use the sizing tool to check the Teflon seals before install?
Does Chevron/techron/additive seem to make any difference?

Sam, you cracked the code again. You are amazing. Sorry I gave up on the last video.
End math..]
Glad you got this working the way you want. Took a LOT of tries, a LOT of your time, and some fails... but if you have the TIME, the KNOWHOW, and are willing to use it, well, there's your just as good as new Range Rover Reward :-)

Hi Sam just wondering who are the best for workshop manuals for Audi. Many thanks
☝️☝️🆙Thanks for watching you have been selected among my lucky winners, message me to claim your prize.🎉🎄🎁🎁
Well done Sam. A white with light leather, LWB, petrol Range Rover is virtually unsaleable here in the UK at the moment.
Why?
I’m curious as well
price of gas/petrol is very high right now, along with the road tax for that size vehicle
@@Zeem4 what’s wrong with white?
I've used the injector trick with cranking over the enige. I've used it on diesel engines that had leaking seals for a while with loads of build up. Works like a charm.

I don’t dislike Range Rovers as I can appreciate how good they are ‘when’ they work. However as an engineer I’m appalled by the quality which still hasn’t been addressed after many years.
I think I’ll just stick with my Landcruiser
It's a shame the Brits after 100 years, still haven't been able to make a dependable car.
That's why us Brits drive Toyotas send the crap overseas
They sell ALL of their products at a premium price. They have no reason to make them any better since their customers lease them. I don't know about repeat customers, but they still continue to sell without any adverse effect on their volume.
As an engineer you will of realised, Bosch is German and nothing to do with JLR ! which part of it broke again ?

@0:37 No, it is just realistic. Only a few people are able to turn a not so cracing deal into a cracing deal when it comes to Range Rovers. You need the skills, the knowledge and a UA-cam channel. ☺
@4:30 That may be the case but the dealer will make sure he has a more than healthy profit margin in those parts. 🙂

Did you change the oil after completing the injector change? If not, that’s what caused your heavy smoke. I am a JLR tech and when these injectors stick they can put a ton of fuel in the crankcase. This will smoke your bearings so ensure you change that oil.
