I was recently looking at living out an old dream of owning an L322.
However insurance was going to be £1000+, road tax £700, big fuel bills and untold maintenance costs I decided to leave the idea as a dream in my head, rather than a nightmare on my driveway.

Insurance is sometimes baffling. On my renewal, I phoned the broker to take my ex wife off as a named driver, he said it would go up in price, and it did, £40 if I remember. So I kept her on the policy and she's still on there now 8 years later.

I was on the verge of buying a RR Sport 300D 2021 year when I checked my insurance. I live 15 miles out of Manchester and am late 50's with full no claims etc etc. My current insurers would not insure me (though happy to take £550 per yr for my BMW640D) and going to the market got me a quote of £3920.00!! I changed my address to one near the border with Scotland and lo and behold got a quote for £1300.00. Still expensive but somewhat better than nearly £4K. Either way, I will be sticking with my 640D for the time being. Great video👍

Store the keys/fobs in a faraday box or pouch, stops their signal pick up, also a system i think called Ghost where you programme the immobiliser unlock to whatever you chose, i.e, you have to input left indicator/hazard light/radio on etc, so only you know which button/levers to press to start the vehicle.

This gets even better. You get a special program installed on your RR which makes you perform a series of arbitrary actions each time you want to start it up so it doesn’t get stolen. All because it has keyless entry, which was supposed to remove the daunting task of, wait for it, pressing a button - whooo. Then, you have to remember where your key is because there’s no special holder for it - otherwise known as an “ignition”. Jesus christ well done humanity.

Here in the USA, certain Hyundai and Kia model vehicles have seen skyrocketing insurance premiums due a weak point in the ignition system that can allow hacking so can be very easily stolen. So far putting on a steering wheel bar lock has been the most immediate response of Hyundai/Kia until a better fix can be done. Most of the thefts have been by 'joyriders'. Other brands like Land Rover and other 'luxury' brands, SUV's, are being stolen more for export, especially in areas where near ports. I bet a lot of LR's in the UK being stolen are illegally shipped to Africa and Asia countries with dodgy laws as to past ownership or easy bribery.
Even beyond certain model and brand issues, car insurance premiums are skyrocketing in much of the USA (and likely in the UK) due to a number of factors. Larger numbers of persons operating without insurance or have low levels of liability insurance (so a need for higher premiums for uninsured/under-insured coverage). Much higher replacement/repair parts and labor rates. Long supply parts delays so higher temp vehicle rentals costs. Non-payment of loans. Higher rates of vandalism in certain cities.

I own an RR Velar 2019 HSE. It was a shade over £400 pa to insure when I bought the car in 2021. Last year that went up to £850 which was eye watering enough. I’ve just done a quote for curiosity’s sake. £1600 was the absolute cheapest. We live in north Shropshire and it’s had the security upgrade. It’s really not worth keeping hold of the car when annual running costs are £2k plus before I even put fuel in. It’s even more infuriating to see the value of the car has dropped by almost £8k in as many months (it’s done just over 28k miles). JLR really need to get a handle on the situation as their vehicles are becoming unviable for so many people.

For a manuel gear-change driver to change to an automatic vehicle, the premium will be much higher. The reason being is that it is so easy to stamp on the big brake pedal, thinking it is the clutch, in an emergency, next, you have hit the loud pedal thinking it's the brake. Whatever, they still charge more, especially if you have many miles on your own clock!

This is the latest in a long line of cars that become nickable. In the 60's it was MK2 Jags for bank jobs, then hot hatches in the 80's became uninsurable, cosworths in the 90's etc etc.
These range rovers are just the latest and once they get bored of these then it will be another brand that gets nicked. The thieves are always one step ahead.
I'm glad I got my RR fix in the 90's with a classic RR 3.9 Vouge SE.
I had my Campervan targeted 3 times last year and was then only insurable with a tracker so that got sold before the theives tried a fourth time.

I spent a lifetime working in insurance and its simple. You have lice assurance...... you are assured of dying so the parameters are fixed and premiums can be set accordingly. You INSURE against something that may or may not happen and the premium is adjusted based on risk. Buy a house on River View Street thats fine but when it floods twice in 3 years the view of the flood threat is reviewed based on risk. Sadly in my working life I have met people who have been flooded 4 times in ten years and have a £40k excess on flood perils or can't get cover at all. Seems harsh but bear in mind if an insurer is paying £50- £60k every few years is not sustainable. All the folks who live at the top of the hill 10 miles away from a watercourse.... why should they face a premium increase because of flood repairs when they are not in danger of flooding?
So JLR released products that were secure a few years ago and now the thieves find a way around it. So the risk increases. I saw a video of someone doing this type of theft on a £305k Roller the other day. Fact is they pay more for insurance or you face increases on your costs - its a market.
