Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another PATREON request with Daniel Balavoine and his song Lady Marlene. Taking it back to 1977 Daniel becomes the song once again, but is backed up with a wonderful orchestra. See this amazing performance now!

Fascinating exactly!

"Lady Marlène", recorded in 1977 , was not a hit. His producer , Eddie Barclay was VERY angry ! ( Little news . Eddie Barclay was married 8 times , with 8 different wifes ! This not a fake news. The names are on Wikipedia . This man has really a strong brain ). And so , you know it , in 1978 , Daniel Balavoine recorded his first hit , " Le Chanteur ".

What a song ! This man is a legend, you are right. I have listened to this LP "Les aventures de Simon et Gunther" so many times back then. I love the way you analyze songs. I don't, I just feel them. (Michel Berger has nothing to do with this LP.) Daniel Balavoine has created all by himself this song and most of the LP. Before starting his own career with this record, Daniel Balavoine was one of the backing vocalists of Patrick Juvet a Swiss man ("I love America", "Où sont les femmes ?" "des bleus au coeur"...). I met him one day at the airport going to Barcelona like him. I still remember the softness of his eyes.

Right ! Berger met him later. This song was before he met success with "Le chanteur" in 1978. It is part of a whole album about the wall of Berlin entirely composed by Balavoine. Nice but not commercial for the radio stations at all in the disco wave...

The first time we could listen to him on radio was with this song ... first wondering who was this new (female) singer then understanding he was going to be a big artist with that amazing instrumentation.
By the way, Lady Marlène he's calling to is supposed to be german actress and singer Marlène Dietrich who fled Nazi Germany (hence instrumentation that sounds like a piece of pre WW2 Threepenny Opera - see jazz classic Mack the Knife - or Dietrich's Blue Angel). One of her best known song was "Lili Marleen"

This song is taken from D.Balavoine first "concept" album called "Les Aventures de Simon et Gunther ..." and the first of his songs that had some radio success at the time. Almost nobody knew who he was and what it'll become a year after (1978) with "Le Chanteur".
Instrumentation is some reflection of pre-world war II type of music .. hence the title calling to Marlène Dietrich.
Album is a collection of song telling the story of 2 brothers separated by the construction of the Berlin wall and the attempt to flee East Berlin ... but Simon is shot by VOPO's when attempting to get through.
It's not the first song ever aired on radio at that time, the first song heard on radio by D.Balavoine is called "Evelyne et moi"
From the same album listen to "Mon pauvre Gunther" ua-cam.com/video/7tyCrqhfpdw/v-deo.html

    hello Dereck,
Thank’s for this wonderful video 😊👍!!
This song is part of a complete album,
"The adventures of Simon and Gunther"
With the texts and the music entirely composed by Daniel Balavoine, he had imposed on his producer, to make this record, to be totally free to do everything and choose everything (recording studio, musicians, staging of songs etc.) when it was not yet known in 1977,
This album tells the story of a family separated during the construction of the Berlin Wall. All the songs follow each other to tell this story.
the album, very dark, but sublime, was released in the middle of the disco period !! Village people with WMCA was broadcast continuously on all radio stations ...
the first title (the one that gives its name to the album) on television did not work, totally rejected by the public because too dark .. too political. On the other hand the second, "Lady Marlène" that we are listening to, began to be appreciated at its true value following this passage on television. And it is there, by the greatest of luck, that Michel Berger saw him! At this moment he was thinking about a musical comedy project .. Starmania!
When he saw Daniel Balavoine, he said to himself, « I found the hero of my show !! » Then they never left each other again.

Michel Berger wanted to make this album a show and he will say a few days after Balavoine's death: “He had made a record which was absolutely formidable on the Berlin Wall. It was the story of two brothers who were each on one side of the wall. I had the project to do that in spectacle, with him besides". It is true that they could have made a musical out of this story and with the fall of the wall, pursue it until reunion in freedom! What a great collaboration it could have been!

It s a song created by Daniel Balavoine himself (music and lyrics). Michel Berger became his best friend during the Musical Starmania (1978), entired composed by Michel. But all the Daniel's albums was composed and written by Daniel. All great albums. But the last (Sauver l'amour - 1985) was the biggest creation, modern music, and today it can be listen without any weathering. So many fantastic music to come after that, but life is not esthete.

Hi Derek i love yours videos, and i have a few suggestion :
    - "Mistral Gagnant" by Renaud. Because of alcool (and many other things...) he do not have a good voice so during all his carreer he mainly focus on the lyrics instead of the melody . And this song written for his child is maybe the most beautiful french song ever. (There is also a cover made by a female artiste named: Coeur de Pirate wich is very good too)
    - "Je l'aime à mourrir" by Francis Cabrel. Just know that this song is so good that Shakira decided to make a spanish cover of it.
    - "Un coup de soleil" by Richard Cocciante. This is the best song to sing drunk after being dumped by your boyfriend/girlfriend.
    - " Ma Benz" by NTM feat Lord kossity. LISTEN TO THEIR LIVE VERSION, their energy is truly amazing. NTM is one of the first rap bands in France and maybe the most iconic one. I know that you don't listen to rap song on this channel but trust me you won't regret it.

A very dramatic song and one of his earliest. To me, it sounds like German music from the Marlene Dietrich era. I love the last word: "Les hommes en vert ont... tires" (The men in green... shot). Very well-crafted song. He says this line earlier in the song, but stops short of voicing the "Shot" part. This shows his talent, his vision of songs as a mini-story with a social commentary weaved in. He never changed. He just evolved.
Watch "Pour la femme veuve qui s'eveille", and the heart-wrenching "Un enfant assis attend la pluie" (I challenge you not to get goose bumps with this one!)
    Happy listening

Daniel Balavoine and Michel Berger have worked a lot together, not only on Starmania. They were both well known when they met Jean-Jacques Goldman and became friends. There's a picture of them which has been taken during the huge concert for Africa, at The Wembley Stadium on July 13th 1985. All the 3 were very concerned by poorness, hunger and lack of water. Each of them and together, they have made a lot to fight misery in France and in the world.

Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on Daniel Balavoine. This song is the one that is known to him in the 70's despite a success of esteem and and which will allow him to be noticed after a TV appearance to be engaged on the musical Starmania.
It's one of his songs from that decade that I like and remember because in the documentaries about him that appear on TV, it comes back often.
It's taken from a concept-album "Les Aventures De Simon Et Gunther...". The theme of the title is the failed escape and destruction of the dream of leaving the eastern part of Berlin.
But I prefer the album version than this one!
For your next react, I recommend you "Dieu Que C'Est Beau" (1984) or "Aimer Est Plus Fort Que D'Etre Aimé" (1985), songs more synthpop wave and very 80's and why not Pour La Femme Veuve Qui S'Eveille (1983), an "experimental" song, a kind of "World" music.
Thanks for your amazing work our Frenchie American dude. 👍🇫🇷

At that period his label wanted to fired him because all the album was about the Berlin Wall (separating east and ouest Germany). Too sad subject, too intelectual. Finaly, a little bit later he realeased "j'aurais voulu être un artiste", much more catchy. And then it was the begining of his succes.
    Greeting from France
    Keep on Dereck !

Thank-you so much Dereck to let me discover this Balavoine song I just didn't know !
At first nobody wanted to support Balavoine songs, estimated too sad !!! Looking back, his first songs are just deep and touching!
For us Europeans, Berlin wall is an especially emotional subject, and I can't help remembering the excellent touching old black & white movie Lilly Marlène, staring this superb actress! and of course also the superb omnipresent eponym song Lilly Marlène evocating love during nazi regime!
Of course, I can't either help remembering Pink Floyd album
    The Wall, especially the song
We don't need no education, evocating East-Berlin pupils during communist regime !

for the french " chançon " the most important is the meaning and the beauty of the texte , the music come after , like a box for a jewel .. you should at least put subtitles in english and explain the meaning of the song , balavoine was one of our great singers , he was living in "berlin" when he was a youg kid , and this song speek about one man who tries to escape and get kill by the guards and German people from the west like Marlene dietrish, who did not know how hard life was on the east side..
listened to French chançons without understanding French is like talking about a pizza without tasting it , sorry if my comment look hard , you look nice and it's great to be interested in European music but you have to put subtitles ..
