Here is a free course featuring Brent Roth about different ways to set up rappels through a canyon. This considers ease of rigging, abrasion, ease of rescue and how efficient it is to move people through the canyon.
Episodes 1-5 show the systems,
Episode 6 shows how it can all be done with 1 device,
Episodes 7-8 are friction tests,

These videos are incredibly fascinating, especially coming from a climbers perspective. The format works very well for me since I feel like Ryan is asking many of the same questions that I have as I watch, and the process of watching someone learn makes it feel like I’m really there in a sort of classroom setting learning along with y’all.

Love these videos. As a climber, they give me something new to think about (i.e. how do people on the other side of the railroad tracks live), they give me ideas for things that I can use if I'm climbing/rappelling with larger numbers of people, and I get to learn whether I want to pick up another hobby. From a video learning and editing standpoint, I love your format...sometimes the one person explains something might not be the same as the way another does, so getting the feedback of two people is great - aside from this, yes, you are learning it as we are, which is great. I originally wasn't going to watch this series but I'm so glad I did. As a saddle hunter that uses srt to get up trees and learning from youtube videos. This makes me feel safer. I'm also teaching my kids to climb and now I know I should use a releasable system. They are only 9 and 7 so I keep then in arms reach still.
Lol, people have so many ways to complicate things, think about this, life is so good and easy that people spend their time getting really deep into things, it’s pretty incredible.
For anyone wondering why Brent was criticizing Ryan's munter mules: Ryan's mule is actually a slipped half hitch and not a mule. The half hitch is still safe but, according to what I've read, not as clean to release under load.

Watching Ryan learn in real time is an experience. I kind of just wish this was left to Brent to present and then bring in Ryan for question time at the end of each segment. Otherwise, I love this series. Keep up the great content.
He, like most people, present way way better when it feels more conversational to them having a person to teach rather than just a lens in their face.

Great video as are all of Your vids . I have always considered techniques from sport climbing , tactical rope tech , Rescue tech, and professional trades reliant on high angle tech. Tons of great info and wisdom out there .
Not to totally give in to mass hysteria, but a few months back I stopped by Dick's sporting goods in modesto California just to see what climbing stuff they might carry. I was at the mall already so why not. I found they're very small black diamond section of "climbing gear." On the same isle I found some MUCH cheaper and smaller carabiners with pictures of people rock climbing on them. It was totally misleading and if I was a noob I would have easily believed they were made for climbing. I was so annoyed I made a whole snap chat story about it lol. I would send it to you but alas I didn't save it. Cheers!

well if your rope has more than 2 ends it probably frayed somewhere and I think you might want to retire it
if it has less than 2 ends that is a theoretical object, theoretical objects come with assumptions, with this type of rope work we don't make assumptions we do what we know

I've only watched 8min, but double isolated the ropes are somewhat dependent, and compound are independent..
That sounds opposite of what I'd call isolated and compound, but maybe there's a reason after..
Or simply is describing something else then the dependence of the system

How does this hardware hold up to saltwater? I can think of several times where I was doing something dumb while small boat sailing (sunfish) that would have been made safer by having one of these devices, but I don’t want to invest into one of it’s not going to like getting wet.
What could you possibly want to do with this gear on a sunfish? Im genuinely curious
@@Heybudhowsitgoing not all of it at once, but I use sunfish from a pool of boats all with different rigging setups. I prefer a cleated block, but a lot of the hulls lack them. With some creative fixturing it is possible to add one, and using one of these devices would help by giving me more options for anchor points
@@ghostdog0424 I would argue that, especially in a small boat like a sunfish, its best to be able to release the sheets in a hurry, so fixing the sheets like that wouldnt be optimal. And the halyard already has a cleat, and doesnt need much adjustment. But there are plenty of days where you can sail for hours without risk of capsize so wanting to get that sheet out of your hand is understandable. I love sailing :) cheers man have fun! Sail on!
My only concern would be when you tap off the end of the rope and your system releases, your biners on your knotblock just have to bounce down the mountain/canyon wall? 🥴 Even tho micro fractures are a myth, I still don’t want my gear bouncing back down a rock towards me

'double ended rope bag' what's that? How do you use it properly? I can't find this stuff online. How do you carry the rope bag with you and descend while not getting into a mess?
Check out canyoneering specific rope bags. Imlay Canyon gear or OnRope are two popular canyon brands in the Southwest. They have a large grommet in the bottom of the bag to allow the Rope to pass through. When descending with the Rope bag it is usually clipped to the harness or lanyard. Being that the Rope is stuffed into the bag it usually comes right out without issue unless on a longer Rappel which at that point you can pull out 20 ft or so to create a belly in the Rope to help mitigate twisting that comes from most figure eight style devices.
Just as the name suggest, Double Ended rope bags have openings on both sides, so you have access to both ends of the rope. In this video, the 2E bag is being used for a compound system, but the 2E bag van be used for several canyoneering scenarios. Several canyoneering gear brands sell 2E bags, here in the USA "Gear Perspective" offers one.

At 25:28 he makes a mistake and clips to the eye of the fig 8 instead of the anchor- this effectively turns the two ropes that y’all seem to be talking about being able to rap on either one- into a simul rap system. He essentially treats the pull side of the block like a rap line ☠️
Thanks for all the hard work. Can we have a series with just Brent? It's honestly harder watching him teach someone who has their own knowledge and questions and rush things etc.
Most people are not good in front of a camera but I found the hack, which is have them talk to me. Brent has 0 personality when he talks to a camera by himself, but when he is "showing me" on camera, he comes to life. It's also really hard for anyone to remember everything but having someone ask questions helps to keep them on track. I could make the big wall course by myself, but I'm doing it with someone because I found this style to be way way more effective.
@@HowNOT2 I completely understand, maybe the questions being more concise and allowing Brent to answer at his own pace could be good. You could get him to repeat the question back to you and just edit the video with him responding to a question rather than hearing you figure out exactly what question to ask and how to phrase it.
In the end you do you, but this video I found particularly confusing because you were jumping all over the place figuring out your own stuff too.
Obviously for free, that's totally fine, but then I would have marketed these videos as "watch me learn canyoning" and we could have learnt as well but when people come in expecting a course then I think it's a little against the grain to be taken out of the learning process to watch you learn.
Either way, thanks for consistently making great content and informative videos.

It’s complicated stuff so having me regurgitate it helps those trying to learn it. It’s not supposed to be entertaining. We have over 300 other videos that meet that criteria, but this helps a certain % of the audience and helps cross pollinates the sports.
@@HowNOT2 Ryan love your stuff, but others learn at different paces, have different questions and are confused about different things, having you "interrupt" the lesson with your question feels like we need to sit through an online live tutorial with q and a's that we aren't allowed to join in on.
Some of your questions or specifications were great since it aligned with what I wanted (more so in the previous vids), but others were just a waste of my time to see you figuring out something I already got.
(There seems to be other comments mentioning this as well)
