The very best part of Rodney's awesome contibution to that memorial concert was his public acknowledgement of Vivian Distin, Johnny Cash's first wife and mother of his four daughters. It was shamefully cut from the broadcast but can be seen in the documentary film, My Darling Vivian. Rodney Crowell was the ONLY person who mentioned her, according to that film, and she was sitting in the audience. Respect to Rodney.
I wish they would have shown that part. I'd seen the documentary on Vivian with their daughters, and they said they cut his tribute to out of the final cut. That was so unfair. She went through so much, and still loved him.
@clincoln8835 I just finished watching it, and was looking for this and hoping they'd show the part where he dedicated the song to her. It was so upsetting the way they portrayed her in the movie. I wish she would have lived longer, but I'm glad she didn't have to suffer another degredation.
I liked how he gave a tribute to Vivian Cash Distin and thanking her (she was in the audience) for being a wonderful grandma to his daughters with Roseanne Cash. This was on the "My Darling Vivian" documentary.
RC and RC made such a sweet and super talented couple, I was sad they split up, but it was a big consolation that they never stopped being friends. And that they were both able to find happiness with new mates.
They left out the most awesome sweetest part where Rodney talks about Cash's awesome first wife Vivian. The Documentary, My Darling Vivian, was great. I met Rodney once and he was so sweet. You can also read Vivian's book I Walked The Line.
I have loved Rodney Crowell since first hearing him on Emmylou’s first albums, till he released his own albums. I loved Rodney with Roseanne Cash, but I am glad they are friends and they love Claudia and John Leventhal. I love that Rodney paid tribute to Vivian, she didn’t have much longer to live and she loved Johnny Cash, her first and true love till she died. I have always known who June Carter is/was, my mom grew up listening to the Carter family and she introduced me to the Carter family and Johnny Cash. My mom was the hippest mom around, she just passed away months ago. There are huge similarities between Roseanne’s life and mine. My parents first date was at the Roller Rink, just like Vivian and Johnny, my parents married 4 days after Johnny and Vivian. I was born 4 days before Roseanne, my dad had a girlfriend at the same time that Johnny started seeing June, my young beautiful mother was heartbroken just like Vivian except, my dad realized that my mom was the prize he almost lost, my mom had 4 children 5 and under, just like Vivian, when he started his thing with his girlfriend of 10-15 years & my dad had 2 bonus kids with his girlfriend. My mother was absolutely gorgeous and she was so smart and a talented artist.
More than the melody (which both Johnny and Bob took from a Paul Clayton song which itself was taken from an earlier public domain song called Who’s Gonna Buy You Chickens When I’m Gone). The entire last verse of this version is word for word Dylan’s.
@@leepowers8944 Bob Dylan wrote "Don't think twice, it's alright" song in 1962. Johnny wrote this adapted version with Bob Dylan's permission. BTW, they were very close friends. "Who's Gonna Buy You Chickens When I'm Gone" was an old folk song and public domain. Clayton's record company tried to sue Johnny Cash but lost. Paul Clayton used the song to write "Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons When I'm Gone." Clayton would later commit suicide.
I might have gotten the location, and situation wrong, but Rodney just confirmed the story I had been told long ago, about "son, I don't know you well enough to miss you, when your gone"! Sounds like Johnny!
It's appalling that they cut out his dedication of this song to Ms. Vivan, Johnny's first wife. I'm glad they featured it in the documentary, "My Darling Vivian."
I also just saw the documentary. To all the Girls .. Your mom wanting to be remembered, villified ,identified for her life as YOUR mom and a grandmother too and of course Johnnys first wife ...well I am acknowledging her here . I send you all peace and prayers from the bottom of my heart. God Bless Vivian ! PS what a class act Rodney.. dont ever change !!!!
I remember this when it was on TV. I didn't remember the song Rodney sang though, I was thinking too hard trying to remember how he described the meeting with Johnny to pay much attention to what he sang. I remember, one of these tributes thinking that the last song Johnny sang was Walk The Line at the end. And someone else was in tears. Everyone sang the song with Johnny.
i love the way he ties the two artists together. love the way he interprets the song it is good but i do recall when i first heard the song by cash i couldn't help but think there is a strong dylanesque element to the song, the irony, the directness of the retorts etc. this is really good and is a very good testament of rodney's musical expertise.
Wish we could go back to the era when guys like Rodney, Ricky Van Shelton, Dan Seals, were on the radio... When Conway Twitty was today's George Strait, a classy elder statesmen still making hits... The glory days of country music, just before everybody and their brother had to start liking it!!! haha
Elvis 1968. Their on the radio in Texas.. Its a station called THE TEXAS MIX .I pick it up on 95 fm I'm in the South Victoria area... Great station that is how I frist heard Rodney ..
@@your-drunk--go-home1101 a small unknown band down there wrote a song called” I heard it on the X”. I think they called themselves ZZ Top. Hope they made it big
@JadeDebi Yep I knew they held hands on the way out of the court house after the divorce was final. That sort of says a lot. Most people wanna smack eachother.
it was quoted in the 90s they had split due to fighting and alcohol & drugs. She was very much in love with Rodney regardless how much abuse was there. If you notices they both wrote their songs of each other .... so much love & compassion with each other. Today they are back to making music together again and with a great friendship rebuilt after all that hurt in the past. I truely believe they love each other. John Paul White been a great trooper in all this. He & Rosanne have a great marriage & great respect for each other.
Hi "spurs": Rodney Crowell performs a compilation of two songs in this tribute to Cash: "Understand Your Man" and "Don't Think Twice". The first was written by Cash (probably in reference to his first wife Vivian when they were having marital problems) and the second written by Bob Dylan and recorded by Cash on the Orange Blossom Special album. Crowell does a superb job here.
Hello, Rodney! I just stumbled across your humorous story here and loved it AND your song. I still tell everyone about your I WALK THE LINE REVISITED song with John. I like that almost better than the original.
I like the way he arranged this it is more than a fitting tribute to a legend, I kinda like it better than the original but I'll say it's a lie if you tell anybody! lol
@teddie488 the second part rodney sings ere is actually dont think twice its all rite..cash had to ask dylan for the rite to realese the song understand your man because they were so similar..he said its like the second part to dont think twice
Well, Cash didn’t HAVE to ask (unless he used Bob’s words, which this version does). The song’s tune is public domain; Who’s Gonna Buy Your Chickens When I’m Gone.
@bvallier100 thats the whole point of the song lads..cash wrote this song with dont think twice in mind he said its almost like the second part to dylans dont think twice
Rodney can write a book as well as a song or better. Read "Chinaberry Sidewalks" instead of watching Fox News or Jersey Shore. You will be glad you did. I sure am, frickin' Phox Gnus.
Jonn Steinbeck Johnny Cash told Columbia Records to not cancel Dylan’s contract in 1964 because Cash was a big name and he thought Dylan had something pretty great. Dylan and Cash were close friends. Dylan appeared on Cash’s first show when went on TV.
The tune is public domain. Who’s Gonna Buy You Chickens When I’m Gone. That’s why Paul Clayton couldn’t sue Bob (even though they were friends as well) and Dylan couldn’t sue Cash.
A pretty song, but a questionable tribute. I know that Johnny and Bob collaborated, but this is not one of them. I guess Bob was big enough to let this pass and maybe it even got them together. Nashville Skyline is a fave. Rodney is amazing.
Creature Friend, Rodney combined two songs, the second being written by Dylan, though Cash did perform it (Don't Think Twice, It's Alright). Rodney, undoubtedly, heard the similarities between Dylan's song and Understand Your Man (written by Cash). Nice tribute to Cash, I think, since he recorded both songs. Dylan's song was a derivative of a traditional song "Who's Gonna Buy Your Chickens When I'm Gone". So in a sense, both artists 'borrowed' the tune, but Dylan was first!

Wow. Thank you for sharing this. I've been wanting to watch the Documentary and I'm so impressed he did that! Makes me love him even more. ♥️
Thanks for mentioning that. I was at the show that night and felt the same way.
Johnny's bass player mentioned her name when he told the story of them all going to his house when he was trying to learn to play bass.
I wish they would have shown that part. I'd seen the documentary on Vivian with their daughters, and they said they cut his tribute to out of the final cut. That was so unfair. She went through so much, and still loved him.

Wow, love Rodney so much - and here he is singing Bob Dylan about Johnny Cash! I have to believe Johnny would love it.
Johnny wrote and released this song in 1963..he did borrrow some of the melody from an earlier dylan song.
More than the melody (which both Johnny and Bob took from a Paul Clayton song which itself was taken from an earlier public domain song called Who’s Gonna Buy You Chickens When I’m Gone). The entire last verse of this version is word for word Dylan’s.

I really love Johnny Cash. Nice to hear one of his songs being done that is not one of those required to be.

God he gives it so much feel I almost prefer it to the original . Such justice !
More talent than most knows.

Shares the the same melody as Dylan's Don't think twice it's allright.
I get to see Rodney this Saturday night at the oldest Dance Hall in Texas.
Color me a happy man!
I was there too. He asked for request and I yelled out After All This Time. He played it.
Rodney Crowell is awesome his song Telephone Road . Describes my child hood to a T HOUSTON PROUD.

To be clear, though, Dylan's song was first, and Cash borrowed the melody with some changes.
But, Bob took the tune from Paul Clayton, who took it from Who’s Gonna Buy You Chickens When I’m Gone.

No offense to the great Johnny Cash, but I like this arrangement better; if for no other reason it doesn't have the brass as in the Johnny's version.
It's a Dylan song. I don't know what JC has to do with it at all.
John McClure I agree, with much respect to Johnny Cash,Rodney's version is better!
Don't Think Twice is a Dylan song. Understand Your Man is a JC song. Rodney makes it seem like one.
all hail King George
Sounds a lot like....Don't think twice it's alright.....good version.....which came first...
I always wondered how Johnny got away without a plagiarism suit on this song . Guess he was closer to dylan than I thought .
