TOP QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
- It's not a lightsaber, it's a protosaber!
Yes, and if you watch the whole video, you'll see that is exactly what we call it ;-)
- Voltage doesn't kill, current does!
It's important to know what that actually means before repeating it.
It only takes a few miliamps to stop a heart. But to stop a heart, the electricity has to GO THROUGH YOUR HEART. The human body, especially skin, has extremely high resistance. So for most small electronics projects, you're completely safe. The quoted "safe range" for DC is around 50V. This means your skin has enough resistance to prevent the flow of current through your body, and through your heart. As that voltage goes up, that's when you start to get in trouble. If you have ANY kind of unregulated power supply (like this one) it WILL be able to provide enough current to kill you. But only if the voltage is high enough to pass said current through your heart. This battery pack can put out hundreds of amps. More then enough to fry you. And 300V is more than enough voltage to break down your skins resistance. Please, please PLEASE research electricity -- the more you know, the safer you can be while doing projects. e.g. WHAT WE ARE DOING IS NOT SAFE!
- How does the blade not bend!
It did actually start to bend a bit, but in our revised design (likely a tungsten core) it will not. We plan on making two, and yes, we plan on fighting with them!
- Where's the test!?
Patience young padawan. These videos take time to film and edit! Make sure you're subscribed with notifications turned on!
- This isn't a lightsaber!
Yeah well unfortunately even if we could contain a laser powerful enough in beam form... the laser emitter would be the size of the room in order to get any actual cutting power. Containing plasma, like a plasma cutter, could be possible, but still difficult to make into lightsaber form.
Our design is the closest to a functional lightsaber, as it will be able to cut things, it looks like it, and it sounds like it. Remember, how a "lightsaber works" is a work of fiction... invented by an author, not an engineer. The physics of how it's "supposed to work" just don't.

Why not just call it FAQ
the Hacksmith now the real test is to make it blue
If it's not a lightsaber, why put "lightsaber build" in the title?
Justin it is a lightsaber, but it's technically a protosaber
Justin the prosaber was an early design of the lightsaber made by the sith then adopted by the Jedi cause those dam sith alchemists get all the cool stuff. Then once technology advanced the light sabre was made (again by the sith first) due to the fact the power source could not be eternalised in to the handle. This was done for many reason most obviously you could just cut the power cord and then no saber. (MORE STAR WARS CANNON/LEGENDS THAN YOU EXPECTED) ye don't know if this is cannon any more so ye
First guy that actually made a light saber and not a flashlight
SOUL STONE protosaber
How about diy latex glove fleshlight
Yah Allen pan thought he made one but it was basically a flamethrower
SOUL STONE i have to say that too
It isn’t a light saber cause light have no shape so he wouldn’t be able to turn it on if made of light, when you heat metal into that temperatures it becomes plasma, so it would be more like a plasma saber

This is the closest thing to a light saber I have ever seen.
I know that they made a more realistic lightsaber, at the time they didn't make a better lightsaber than this.
Also Proto sabers are not canon, it is found in the star wars Expanded/Extended universe also know as star wars legends or legends. I recommend you learn about it, especially star wars fans who haven't heard about legends. (Yes their are fans who don't know what legends is.) If your wondering what the first lightsabers are in canon, search up what the first lightsabers were in canon and they were kind of similar to modern lightsabers.
Even I seen other light sabers that are just Laser pointers, but this is 10 times better, more useful, more powerful, and cooler than all other light sabers combined.
If I had one: **looks threateningly at all the bread in the store**

People talking about the worlds first Jedi when the lightsaber is clearly red. 😂
Imagine him going on the street and hitting people with it
There are a few instances in which a Jedi has used a red lightsaber. In fact, there exists an actual naturally red type of kyber crystal. Extremely rare, though it was once discovered. That, of course is now legends, considering the new canon says the saber crystal adopts a color based on the wielder.

Mmmm not really, but that's quite the enthusiasm lol. Light sabers are basically contained plasma... somehow. This is just electrically heated metal. But it's still *_VERY_* cool...
GhostShipSupreme after this eyeopening video. I think we should start accepting the fact that lightsabers are electrically heated metals. If heated enough it can do everything a plasma/laser lightsaber does. It just makes more sense that in our reality they will be metal rods.

They made a retractable one now lolz

Nick theanimelover Moe i see it orange but it doesn't matter, its awesome both ways
It's funny, because in the Star Wars lore, Jedi's used to use battery-powered lightsabers before they were able to figure out how to make the lightsabers more portable. Because when Jedi used to fight against the Sith, the Sith would cut off the cable from the power supply to the lightsaber or they would most likely run out of power that's why they were deemed inefficient to use by the Jedi.
So without knowing you actually did not just create a lightsaber but you guys created a ancient lightsaber.
As a Star Wars fan of the comics I tip my hat to you good sir.
Angel Villa The story is part of the Legends, which is non-canon, but good point there.
You mean a Protosaber, he also says in the Video they are making a Protosaber not a Lightsaber

do they ever talk about proto-type sabers in starwars movies/books at all? probably alot of accidents happened lol.
Why not use Tantalum? It has the third highest melting point next to Tungsten, at around 3290 degrees Celsius.
It does come in rod form and it shouldn't be too expensive. It is also highly chemically inert so it shouldn't oxidize very easily either. I was originally also going to suggest Rhenium as well, but it's really expensive so it probably wouldn't be very practical.
Anyways it's just a suggestion, you guys have done amazing work making this proto-saber and I can't wait to see what you come up with next!
From my understanding, It’s because tantalum has a much lower resistivity, essentially meaning it would take a lot more power to heat up.
No that is not how resistance works, your wire will heat up by the exact amount of power it gets, resistance just defines how many amps will get through the system at what voltage.
A suspicious black cat
Google knows everything.
A suspicious black cat Ohms law says so. Also it just means that it will take less time for the metal to heat up and it will as much power that it needs or you fan give it.
none of your business My suspicion is due to
1) Tantalum being more obscure
2) Tungsten being all around better as a percussion weapon.
See, even Tungsten experiences a drop in yield strength when increased in temperature - you can look up diagrams, I've found a really old documentation that says apparently raw un-alloyed tungsten starts to drop in yield at around 2000 fahrenheits.
Now, the problem with this is that the yield of Tungsten is WAAAAAAAY above Tantalum. Like, 170 MPa vs 941 MPa. So it is fair to assume the Tantalum rod would basically flap around like a piece of silly putty at that temperature. And alloying it is a bad idea, as the components would just melt out of the structure.
Personally, I'd say the best idea would be some kind of ceramic with tungsten inlays, but I am not exactly an expert on ceramics, so I can't tell you whether there is one that is resistant enough to dynamic stress to survive a lightsaber battle.
EDIT: scratch that, these guys are more clever than I thought, they used an insulated rod inside to keep the thing stable. Clever, but I suspect this way the saber lacks the destructive capacity typically associated with lightsabers.
you guys are so cool i wish that I had a real light saber from Star Wars
I remember watching a Mythbusters episode 5 years ago and I remember them saying, “it is impossible to have a beam of electricity extend 3 feet into the air and stop...”
henry frates well it seems that myth... has been busted. huh huh no? Ok I’ll leave.
