I'm very excited to see where they go with this, and I'm glad he addressed the "flame" sabre stability. It's extremely intriguing to know theyre attempting to tackle thaat.
My guess is that they're looking into disrupting surrounding airflow with their own built-in fans on the hilt somehow? Like, forming a vortex of air around the blade so that it isn't as affected by crossbreezes. Might also have the unintentional benefit of making it look like Kylo Ren's "unstable" saber too
for future versions i reccomend using CFX (crystal focus x) or something similar as a sound system as there are already "sound fonts" that you can download plus it makes the swinging sound dynamic instead of a set sound like shown here: 6:28 and it may be possible to modify CFXs hit detection system to work when hitting another lightsaber of this type but im not entirely sure a proffie sound board may work better due to it being more customisable. proffie and cfx boards are the most used lightsaber soundfont boards and are used in most custom lightsabers that you can buy
A Proffie soundboard would probably be better for the Hacksmith team. They're basically a purpose-build lightsaber arduino, and they have a lot of customization that can be done with them. CFX might be just as good, though.
Right now, The Lightsabers are basically just compact sci-fi themed welding tools. But hopefully in the near future, The Hacksmith Team would be able to pioneer the world's first magnetically stabilized plasma saber.
That’d be quite the feat, and may lead on to the use of more laser based weaponry as they would’ve came up with a better way to control plasma in a magnetic field. Can’t wait

In Star Wars Legends Lore, way before the Skywalker Saga (like 10.000 years before Galactic Empire) the very first lightsabers actually looked like this and worked like Hacksmiths version. Jedi Knights had a PowerCell attached to their belts. The lightsaber was then connected with a powercable to the powercell on the Belt. Later the kyber crystal which gives power to the lightsaber was redsigned and added to the hilt itself. Thats the lightsaber we know from the movies.

@@crimssoon a real lightsaber is very concentrated and doesn’t do anything unless there’s actual contact (so it doesn’t heat something up from a distance but rather cuts something on immediate contact). And like the comment you replied to said it deflects other lightsabers or blaster shots. I would say that a thicker and retractable version of one of the first lightsabers they made (the one where they heated up a rod) that heats up incredibly fast would be the closest you can get to a real lightsaber.
Now all you have to do is to make your power source super small and super long lasting. Now I have a theoretical solution but it's super expensive, super time consuming and very difficult to do. Three steps guide, very easy: 1. Make a fusion reactor. 2. Make it smaller. 3. Put it in a lightsaber. Bonus step: make an actual arc reactor and dig a hole in your chest.

I appreciate that you actually performed that jump in the intro my dude, watch those knees lol Now then, Unobtanium aside, how does the fuel system in an actual lightsaber work? The miniaturization you guys have developed is fantastic. This final bit of information is probably the REAL barrier to developing the common lightsaber we know and love. You guys are awesome, thank you.
An actual lightsaber doesn't exist -- so how "it works" is really irrelevant because it was dreamt up without thinking about physics 😜 Which means however we figure it out, is how it works 💪
Unobtainium is the crux of a lightsaber working. But it was dreamt up by using the idea of LASERs. Which is that when you apply a strong electrical current to certain gemstones, they emit radiation (light.) Star wars suggested "What if there was a crystal that produced plasma when stimulated, instead of light?" So until there is a gemstone that emits plasma when stimulated by electricity (Physically impossible, because plasma is a state-change of matter.) The rest of 'how a lightsaber works' is basically the same principal of what they're doing here. The other key ingredient being a magnetic force-field... which is probably also physically impossible. But the force field is used to create a barrier to 'contain' the plasma inside of. That gives the saber it's shape. But that's where your suggestion might be worth looking at. The next step for this project might be ways to 'contain' the blade in the right shape. Force fields obviously aren't possible, but maybe other ways to contain or shape the plasma-stream?
In lore lightsabers used a crystal that doesn't exist and while there probably would be a type of gas compact enough to fit in just the hilt it would probably explode
@@hacksmith well if you found a way to contain the plasma in a magnetic field without the need of metal at either side that would be a step closer but as of now I don't think that's possible
@@jenniferdunstan5065 hear me out, I wonder if there's any merit to those string looper kids toys. You know, where there's a fast spinning wheel, and you wave the handle around to make wavy shapes. Perhaps a series of strong magnets alternating a push and pull could create a similar loop, however one that moves a lot faster than a piece of string, so would be more difficult to deform. If you could fling a magnetic loop like that, it could be feasible, but the power consumption for that alone would be significant

I think the biggest issue would be power, since the amount of power, and fuel needed to sustain long-term lightsaber use is way too big, with enough money, the problem could probably be solved, one way or the other, but it'll probably be decades before we ever get a power-source compact enough to fit into the handle of a lightsaber, and powerful enough to sustain that kind of usage for more than 5-10 minutes.
I would absolutely love to see mark hamill and Liam Neeson see the next version of their lightsaber, I feel like they would be giggling uncontrollably the whole time
I've been thinking, what if the lightsaber had an oxygen flow in a type of vortex shaped current. That could compress and contain the flame, and ignite it further, for a higher heat output, and a better swinging experience.

a proffie sound board may work better due to it being more customisable.
proffie and cfx boards are the most used lightsaber soundfont boards and are used in most custom lightsabers that you can buy

A Proffie soundboard would probably be better for the Hacksmith team. They're basically a purpose-build lightsaber arduino, and they have a lot of customization that can be done with them. CFX might be just as good, though.

An actual lightsaber doesn't exist -- so how "it works" is really irrelevant because it was dreamt up without thinking about physics 😜
Which means however we figure it out, is how it works 💪
Unobtainium is the crux of a lightsaber working. But it was dreamt up by using the idea of LASERs. Which is that when you apply a strong electrical current to certain gemstones, they emit radiation (light.) Star wars suggested "What if there was a crystal that produced plasma when stimulated, instead of light?"
So until there is a gemstone that emits plasma when stimulated by electricity (Physically impossible, because plasma is a state-change of matter.) The rest of 'how a lightsaber works' is basically the same principal of what they're doing here.

Perhaps a series of strong magnets alternating a push and pull could create a similar loop, however one that moves a lot faster than a piece of string, so would be more difficult to deform.
If you could fling a magnetic loop like that, it could be feasible, but the power consumption for that alone would be significant
