    4:33 In rapier, there are blocks where the rapier and parrying dagger are crossed, specifically with the dagger sandwiched between the attacker’s rapier and the defender’s. This allows the defender to easily handle their own weapon while keeping their enemy’s weapon trapped by the offhand dagger.

      Perhaps a wakizashi or tanto knife, but anyone with status to carry a full length sword would probably not even bother with a bladeless jitte. Duels were between blades, this was very specifically a tool for disarming criminals or unruly ronin.
      There are even longer jitte that is itself as long as a katana too, that might have been weilded with a shorter one

      @@terrydavis5924 I don't know; I've seen Edo-era woodblocks of samurai with drawn jitte who also have sheathed katana in their obi. Could that have simply been an anachronism from the artist?
      The idea of these tools was to non-lethally capture someone. If someone was really dangerous and it was unsafe to use the jitte, they'd be using the three "capture" polearms - tsukubo, sasumata, sodegarami, perhaps along with the "folding spearhead attached to a rope", the karakuri-jitte.
      Very few sources refer to it as this, many just call this rope-spear a "jitte" as well EDIT I found a rope-spear referred to as a jujikatsuma (十字かつ磨) but I can't find a consistent source on when it was invented or even its name. Some people seem adamant that it was the predecessor the jitte. It's a fantastic and scarce-known weapon. Look 'em up! They're fascinating to me; a reuse of the wide variety of yari spearheads for less-than-lethal use - to entangle, pull, cut and distract from a distance.
      Either way, it's likely that policing (and the rank of the samurai asked to do said policing) was widely variable, as were the tools used for said policing - using what is simply at hand or using a very careful and clever combination of all these tools, with a sword being the final, lethal option if capture failed.
      Hell - many samurai used the sageo rope cord of their katana to bind criminals. There's so many options of weapons/tools in the same time period and so many circumstances where samurai of certain standings would or wouldn't have access to certain weapons. I should think many men who were wearing their katana would've tried to use many, many other tools first, before they went in with a sword. You're 100% right that sword-length jitte existed, you can google "nagajitte" to find 'em.

  • @blindcrow849
    @blindcrow849 2 місяці тому +3

    Catching the blade with the hook is widely used in many jutte techniques of differents schools. But it can be actually quite difficult in actual combat.Using it as a tessen or as a baton to deflect sword attacks is still really effective. Some peoples even think that the main usage of the hook was just to prevent the jutte to slip from the belt, like on tobikuchi. As I studied different techniques during the years, I see the hook on the jutte as a bonus: If the situation allow it, use it, but don't be focus only on the hook as it is only a part of the weapon.

    • @recoil53
      @recoil53 2 місяці тому +1

      It looks like it would take big brass ones to try and catch a real sword in real life conditions in that hook.

    • @franktheprank7336
      @franktheprank7336 Місяць тому +2

      @@recoil53Not really. The thing is you don't attempt to directly catch the sword with the hook, look at Seki's demonstrations closely. You're supposed to block the strike and then drive the jutte into the opponents blade. Doing so will make so their blade slips into the hook, because it has nowhere else to go. In HEMA we have a lot of styles using parrying daggers (knifes with big hooked guards) in conjunction with one handed swords and the idea is the same. You block or deflect a strike and then maintain contact with the weapon as you drive the dagger into it, since the blade has nowhere else to go it slides into the guard of the dagger, then you simply twist your wrist and lock the blade in.

    • @recoil53
      @recoil53 Місяць тому +1

      @@franktheprank7336 I didn't say catch in the hook.
      Trying to block a sword that has some force behind it with a foot of steel and maintain contact isn't my idea of a good time.

    • @franktheprank7336
      @franktheprank7336 Місяць тому +1

      @@recoil53 You're confusing videogame blocking with the fencing idea of it. You're not supposed to staticaly block an attack, that's pretty much only reserved for last ditch efforts or to respond to strikes you didn't see coming. When I talk about a "block" I mean driving your weapon into the path of their strike, pushing against it (preferably at an angle instead of head on) to both cut the trajectory of the strike short, and displace it away from your position.
      If you find yourself too far away to effectively do that, then deflections come in. Were instead of blocking, you straight up bash their blade aside, to violently modify their trajectory away from you (You should also combine this with footwork, to circle away from the weapon as you displace it).
      In both of this options, the end result is the same. As long as you maintain your weapon heald against theirs, slipping their blade into the hooks is pretty much guaranted (Unless of course they retreat their weapon before you can do so).

    When I saw that right arm grab, I was wondering if you could shift the grip on the sword to the single lower hand.
    Which is still disadvantageous, but seems like an instinctive reaction.
    Or are there ways to gain further control of the arm or lock up the sword from that situation to cement your position?

    I wonder if these were ever used against an experienced swordsman though. Imagine fighting someone with a sword with something that's shorter than a rolling pin. These things look very concealable, but at what cost? You are civilian law enforcement so why should your duty weapon need to be concealable? If it were up to me, I'd probably want my jutte to be essentially a wooden katana but with the signature jutte hook. In the considerably little anime/media I've watched of the Japan Edo period, I also seem to remember people/civilian law enforcement running around with long wooden staffs.
    Makes me think that the hook and kata were invented for peace of mind, but practically the jutte would be used more like a baton, joint locks or blunt force compliance. Not too different than what you would see from a western policeman when they were known less for firearms and more for a baton or blackjack.

    Does it ever come across in these videos that these techniques rely quite heavily on an opponent to move fairly slowly and without much actual intent? So many methods of disarming but the instant they've caught a blade, it becomes a 1-man show of "Now watch me spin the opponent's wrist with zero resistance"
    I have no doubt these men are impossibly more knowledgeable than me, but I've never seen them exhibit these kinds of techniques with more speed than an explanatory crawl. Can we possibly get a video that uses fencing padding/uniforms so it's safe to actually engage at speed?

      @@DerKlownstein still impractical, if I remember correctly Asayama Ichiden Ryu is used by samurai wearing armor so they wouldn't put much thought or carrying more
