- Over the past 15 years Star Wars fans have created their own custom, high-end lightsaber scene, producing some of the most accurate designs ever created. With The Force Awakens bringing the original Skywalker saber back to the big screen, The Verge’s Bryan Bishop set out to track down the most realistic and spectacular version he could possibly find… of course, he ended up talking to Yoda.

Imagine it. You go in to someone's house to rob them at night. All of a sudden, every light turns off. Pitch black. Then you just hear the spine-chilling sound of Darth Vader breathing, along with a quick lightsaber initiation. No music, no nothing. Just you in an apparent void with Vader breathing and a red light. And you can't even tell where the breathing is coming from, because it's surround sound.

I had a toy one when I was a kid that was one of those cheap telescoping ones but it was spring loaded so it would extend by itself

They have those. But they are not "smooth" and they look exactly like the plastic toy ones that you whip and the saber flies out.

Evil Ash it'd be extremely dangerous if it was actually able to be made. In the wrong hands, someone could could easily go on a mad bloody killing spree with one. Just imagine a psychopath with one, entering a busy mall... he could bust out that lightsaber and start chopping off people's limbs left and right before anyone is able to get him detained.
Basically, humans are too unpredictability shitty of a species to actually trust with holding a weapon of that caliber. It would have to be carefully limited to military or special operative persons.
If a lightsaber would be create, it would've been a controlled particle of compressed light that is hot enough to cut but not hot enough to radiate on the user. First and foremost, we haven't known how to detain light particle in a container much less without. Plus, even if we did manage to detain it, we have no way to modulate the heat that would radiate to that amount of energy or take in such amount without your handle melting or without the user sweating or burned to the bone. So basically, our era has no technology to create an ultimate lightsaber.
Uh, a real sword will suffice to do exactly the same...that is why we have guns.
If we made a light saber it wouldn't be "light", It'd most likely be a captured chemical reaction inside of a reactive resistant tube and if you know your chemistry you know if that tube touches anything the reaction will effect it, so theoretically you don't need heat to completely cut through everything. It's not that insanely difficult to even make one as long as you have a lab and the right equipment/chemicals, and as for fuel source that is incredibly easy by just supplying the reactive chemical in a chamber somewhat how a lighter works.
light sabers in the star wars universe arent made of light its just a name, plasma saber would be more accurate and science can make a plasma blade though itd be very difficult.

The issue with a light saber is that we need to be able to basicly CUT the light emitting from it. As we all know, light travels unlimited distances, untill it hits a wall, which just makes it go in a different direction. And currently, our known technology wont allow us to stop the light at a fixed place. And of course we need something to power the saber, and we need some kind of element that can handle up to 25000C. When we get that, maybe.
Avana Well unfortunately it's not actually possible to manipulate light to that degree for an (hypothetically) infinite amount of time. However, based on some theories, it is not actually light that comes from "light"saber, it's actually plasma. and fortunately you can manipulate plasma into a certain shape using a magnetic field, this is what happens during a solar flare. and we have done this on earth many many times. so hypothetically we could make a "light"saber, just need to study the mechanics of it and learn how to manipulate magnetic fields to that degree and wallah. you got yourself a "light"saber aka plasma sword. the Nerdist channel on UA-cam actually confirmed this. you should watch it. it's pretty cool. hahaha

Avana Avana Actually, the light emitting from the lightsaber is from a crystal. This Crystal in the Star Wars franchise is known as a Caber Crystal which is not acknowledged to have a basic "light" ray coming from the light saber. This Crystal may have many unknown origins intact to be able to power the lightsaber itself and hold the "blade" part. However, I see where you are coming from. But we would need to find a different source of power and technology to form the actual structure of the mysterious lightsaber without inculcating the aspect of a "light".

If a blade is going to shoot right out of a lightsaber at quick speed then it needs to have some form of safety mechanism, so that it can only activate when there is nothing in the way.
For example, it could detect how long it takes for radiation to bounce back to itself and determine the distance that way, just like a camera does when it adjusts the focus for a certain distance.
Snake Bait I don't think we are even advanced enough to make a real lightsaber yet, but someone has already made a bean that is powerful enough to actually come out from the lightsaber, he just doesn't know how to limit the length, and the beam is too thin right now (compared to original scale of width)

That is such a great work! An artist work. Even if I personally prefer another blade-colour. But it will be easy to change the light from blue into red.
Sword fighting also just gives a really good feeling in general. I mean think about it, I think all of us have duelled or played with swords against friends at least once, and the feeling is so exhilarating.

I've been a member of the FX-Sabers Forum for 5 years now and I've seen much of Michael's Graflex design work evolve over that time. Even back then the work was stunning. Now it's just completely jaw dropping. For those of you asking how to get one or even how to make one yourself (because that's what I did), join the forum. There are lots of great people there and a wealth of knowledge on how to make these things.

uhm regular metal swords can go for over 16k a real lightsaber would be millions of dollars.
also compared to some art 16k for this is actually a deal, theres some russian painting worth millions and its literally a blank canvas.
Sis...it takes a lot to build one. Time and effort, all the details he puts in. A combination of engineering and art, it takes years of learning and practice to be able to do something like that. He's also getting money from pursuing his passion. So yeah, it's worth 16K.

I thought I was good at building lightsabers, but this is on another level. I wouldn’t trust it to battle like the ones I make, but I don’t think it’s possible to make one this perfect and durable enough to battle.

You're all bullshit. The way we could ever make it is to have an electron-magnetized broadcaster programmed to broadcast a shape of magnetic field in the shape of a lightsaber blade. Then, after its invisible and things can move through it, a highly-magnetizable metal would be melted and spewed into the magnetic blade, where it would become trapped. Note, we are far from this technology but it EXTREMELY possible.

This lightsaber has much more story and I assume memories (which was introduced with TFA) than they show. It was used by Anakin much longer than it was used by Luke. They should've showed the killing of the younglings and the mustafar scene in Rey's vision. I hope there is a flashback to show how the iconic weapon is being constructed by Anakin!
