Just to clear up a mistake, I mentioned you cannot see the shaft rotating (roll), this is correct as it's internal rotation but you can feel and see the play before it registers an input and before you feel any resistance/engagement.
Thanks for highlighting the truth about many of these devices. They're made as cheaply as possible and to look good in photos on the internet. You dont know about the core movement until you've already bought it. Its a pet peeve that companies put out this plastic crap but price it like military-spec engineering. Another tip for anyone who doesn't know, seek out a dampening grease called Nyogel 767A. Smear a thin coat of this between any surfaces that comprise movement and you'll get much closer to that fluid friction feel - like the feel of a professional video tripod head that makes smooth pans with no bump in the action.
Excellent review. As it happens, I'm a student pilot as well, and (although I agree with you 100%) the yoke in my real plane has the same characteristics. The yoke sticks a bit with one hand operation, and there's some dead space on rotation. It's a 45yo airplane, so that's why. A brand new yoke for flight sim that costs that much, should be better quality. Anyway, did you ever fix it?
Slightly different setup Karl but I use Logitech G923 pedals with a different wheel (the pedals are essentially same as your throttles, required the actual wheel base to work, they're not standalone, but I found some software searching on google that you can program onto an Arduino and a adapter cable and they're able to work as standalone with the Arduino performing the task of the USB controller. You'd need of course someone to have written the control code for your specific throttles but you may have some luck if you want to investigate that route.
I bought one and it didn't have the play yours has in it. I used the two middle throttle levers as throttles and the other two levers as flaps and spoilers but you are spot on about the snagging of the yoke as you pull/push for elevator control. I adjusted my springs and lubricated everything but it was still the same. I now have the Thrustmaster TCA yoke and throttle quadrant. The yoke is hinged at the bottom and doesn't utilise a push pull shaft so is much more precise for flaring on landing etc and the whole thing is just better quality. The throttle quadrant also has working reverser levers. It's about £50 more expensive than the Velocity one but in my opinion worth every penny.
A bit off-topic, but I just wanted to say that your content's quality is top notch and your viewer base is criminally low. Please keep up the great work Karl!
Now, in August 2024, they must have listened to your complaints as my VelocityOne no longer has any of those wiggles or slipages. I do agree it does seem a little cheap in construction. Thanks for your review.
I got mine today and i did test everything possible. Mine is just fine, i dont have any issue like yours. The one thing i could mention, the throttle on the top, the last one feels very light, but else its just fine for the price and quality. The review is, like i would say not fair. The product has good quality, its light plastic and i am happy for that, because i dont want to have heavy product in my hands. Feels great, flying with one hand works fine. I mean, if you want real, then fly in real. Somehow he hates it and thats it. But for a review you have to be neutral, not your own preferences, like the yoke dont have laether, but i want it with leather... I can recommend this product for the price, you will have a lot of fun, with big airliners and light aircraft.
You clearly missed the point in the comparison of build quality for price when he mentioned the Logitech wheel. Dude wasn't babyraging that the yoke didn't have leather, he was simply stating that it's clear you get much more quality out of a racing wheel for a cheaper price than you would a yoke. Which is true. There doesn't seem to be a huge market for flight yokes so these companies are charging preposterous prices, multiple times the price of a FFB Logitech wheel, for really quite simple tech. The only good viable options seem to be this yoke or the honeycomb one, neither of which seem to be the perfect product and also cost an arm and a leg, even second hand these things do not drop in price. It's fucking ridiculous.
You are the only one talking about the play in the yoke. I bought it based on other reviews and I was immensely disappointed. I returned it after a few days...thank you
Great overview. I will say that the play won’t bother me for the price. As a former aircraft dealer, I’ve flown many Cessna and Mooney aircraft that did have a little play so it won’t break the immersion. Also flight school planes that are abused have these issues. Would I like that not to be the case, sure but it wo t kill it for me. Especially when the other alternative for xbox is the cheap hotas or expensive honeycomb pair. Great overview tho. Best of luck with your flight training
Great review fella. This is the only review I've found where the reviewer spends time talking of his actual experience rather than concentrate on features.
You get a sub for calling out the Tomy Turbo! 😂 Oh yeah and also for giving potential customers like me a comprehensive and polished review based on your genuine experience. Happy (vapour) trails, chap. 👍🏾
Great review as always, Karl. Even though the product wasn't that great haha. I just got the Honeycomb yoke and throttle combo and I really like it! It's completely smooth, no play at all. And the yoke and throttle are two separate units with their own usb cable. I very much recommend it!
To answer a technical question… the throttle quadrant isn’t just passing raw buttons, potentiometer values over USB-C, there aren’t enough conductors in a USB-C cable for that. So it definitely has some digital communication protocol over USB-C.
your video is important because you address something that i want to know, which is the quality of the more expensive stuff. in my country we say "what is cheap becomes expensive" this means that buying cheap is and will always be expensive, because if you are passionate about simulators like i am, you'll always improve over time, but we always make the mistake of buying bad quality stuff first, for all sorts of reasons, in my case, monetary. so i take care to use my money wisely thanks and subscribed
The quality of sim racing hardware (especially if you venture above the low end) really makes how cheap and plasticy every other type of peripheral is. I'd love to see more peripherals made with better materials, and I'd be willing to pay more for them, but nobody seems interested in making such things. Not just gaming controllers but things like mice and keyboards. I'm using them all day, every day, so it'd be lovely not to always be touching some nasty plastic thing.
I just bought a GSI GXL wheel for sim racing, it's really amazing how far people go with quality on sim racing products as you mentioned. It's basically a real wheel. When I explain it to someone, even my brother in law who's a car guy, you get a response like 'oh that's cool'. Then I brought the wheel with me and showed him and he was like wtf this is amazing. Everything is like that, even the Xero Play Quick Release, when I took it out of the box my mind was blown how good the quality is on it. People don't mess around with their sim rigs.
I agree that when you buy cheap you will surely get cheap quality. And i have also learned to always go for well made Peripherals. But getting high quality alternatives to the cheap stuff has never been easier in the PC Realm. I love my Cherry MX Board 6.0 and it is built like a tank and still working like new. I also love my Protheus Spectrum G502 Mouse (after i got over the loss of my Logitech G9). For both there are many worthy alternatives from almost as many companies. Ducky seems like a company that does not even cover the more value concious customer and surely not the budget shopper. They only do premium keyboards for all tastes and needs. For Steering Wheels and such... well i am quite content with my Thrustmaster TS-XW Racer even though it is only mostly metal it surely feels premium enough to me (ok the "Quick Release" is not elegantly engineered,...still it is sturdy and has no play whatsoever). There are cheaper wheels that compromise here and there, still a Logitech Combo offers decent value, longevity and quality materials for starters. On par and above Thrustmaster there is another high volume Manufacturer... Fanatec. And i can not think of a cheaply built product from that company. But you also have your Heusinkvelds and Simucubes and other really premium manufacturers when it comes to sim racing equipment. I enjoy Karls Content a lot because he mainly does "reasonably priced stuff" i might up buying myself. (just got me the NLR F-GT Lite! :) )
Glad i found this. You basically hit all the issues i was feeling after i just got it. Yeah its nice to have physical throttle and yoke, but the lack of throttle resistance sucks and the non smooth yoke sucks. You need to remove all lateral force on the yoke shaft before it feels smooth. Had them pus some bearings in it might be nice, but its probably a cheap plastic sleeve. I think i will be returning it myself. 350 is steep a price for what you get.
@@KarlGosling I flown a few more flights with mine and decided to just return it. The yoke being sticky it the worst part. The force to spin is much less than the force to push, and pushing in and out is so jerky because the friction. Yes, pretty disappointed. Anyways, looking forward to see you tear it apart.
My yoke suffers from stiction. I mailed Turtle Beach and was told I needed to keep the shaft really clean as it works off a PTFE bearing. No lubrication. It’s better, but as you say suffers from jerkiness. With mine I have to lift it very slightly. For £350 I’d have expected better
It's terrible isn't it! There's a very obvious detent right in the middle which is where it needs to be at it's smoothest, useless for landing where continuous micro adjustments need to be made.
I just received by turtle Beach controller and $379 in the USA I agree that they are over priced for what you get but like you said once you step up you can double and triple the cost, it might be better but it’s hard to justify that kind of money when it’s basically just a toy for adults. Most manufacturers have moved away from quality and the only concern is profit margins, they put very little R&D into the software And expect a customer to figure it out on their own. As long as all the manufacturers are on the same page and producing substandard equipment all we can do is to go to another manufacture and hope we don’t get another lemon. Thank you for your honest review it’s obvious that you are not a paid off influencer who is only after UA-cam money and all the free products sent to them by manufacturers that are only interested in happy positive reviews regardless of the quality of their product. I have subscribed and I am looking forward to more quality videos from your channel.
I went for the Velocity as in Australia it only costs $430 or £215. Not sure why it’s so expensive in the UK and USA. But the Honeycomb yoke and throttle is over $900. And the new Honeycomb yoke coming out makes it three times the price of the Velocity so just not worth it. So for us in Australia, the Velocity a great deal. After 15 hours of use the sticky pitch resolved. And love all it’s features. Blows the honeycomb out of the water with features.
Hi Anthony, I am in a similar position (in Australia). I like the look of the Velocity as it complements my current gear. The price of the Honeycomb as you say is very costly in comparison although can now be had for $710. My other issue is that I use the Logitech switch panel and Multi function so if I went the Honeycomb, so many of the controls/switches will be duplicated. Seems like a waste to me. Because of this I am still leaning towards the Velocity.
@@bikesandbits1000 l tried a friends Honeycomb and It has a nice feel, but so does the Velocity. But I really wanted both types of throttles and the Velocity gives me both. l also like the fact that the panel lights tell you when things are on or off eg gear down is green and changes to red when gear i# up. Same for parking brakes, etc. it makes it so much easier when flying. Whilst the Velocity is more plastic than the Honeycomb (not that you really notice when flying), all its many more features makes it the better device. The locking mechanism to the desk is so much better esp as it needs packing away after each flight. Honeycomb would have been a nightmare. And the sticky yoke for pitch disappeared after about 15 hours of flying was bit annoying at first but everyone was right that it goes and now it’s great. And ease of setup, it wins hands down. Just such a better device because it is so feature rich.
@@anthonymark3771 I ended up buying the Velocity One. Very happy with it. SIP works well. I fly both the Cessna Citation Longitude and Bonanza G36 regularly so having the two different throttle controls is excellent. I regularly have to remove/reinstall the Velocity One as I use it on my home office desk and their method of fixing makes it so easy. Looks like the pricing is changing as JB HIfi had it for under $500, now it is over the $500 mark. I picked it up for $479 from the Gamesmen.
I have the same and what bothers me the most is that wobbling gap as you also said. It addinional is causing some ugly noise from the plastic using the yoke with only one hand. I decided to use it until the honeycomb xpc is releasing this year, they are definetly doing a better job in terms of quality
No way! I had a Turning Turbo Dashboard! I remember loosing sleep with excitement before the Christmas I got that. Then of course being predicably disappointed when I played it. It did become an amazing prop for adventures though :)
In the meantime, after this Turtle Beach Yoke for FighteJets, I also purchased the VIRPIL joystick. Since then I have almost exclusively flown with it, it is absolutely fantastically accurate and you can adjust everything to your taste.
I know you want the Vernier throttles, but IMO the Honeycomb Bravo would have probably served you better as it's a stand alone quadrant with just about everything you could want on it (minus the vernier throttle, mix and prop) which you could use with a stick to better emulate the Robin. Anyway thanks for warning on this product.
That slop in the yoke according to a lot of other owners was told to them it is Normal according to Turtle Beach. I agree with you for the price it should have way more quality. I have seen others that have plastic snaping sound from the yoke slop like something is broken inside of the yoke from the slop.
It's just terrible for the price, some moulded plastic parts, switches and potentiometers for £350! You can buy a full force feedback wheel with pedals and a shifter for £100 less!
I went from playing racing simulators and remembering watching a couple of your videos, now im playing flight sim looking for my first yolk and here you are again! 😂
Started seeing your channel seeing the Logitech G Pro Review that I got one as well, is so cool to see that I’m not the only sim lover on my free time as a pilot!!! Love the content, cheers.
I heard from one reviewer that the stiff yoke movement ,mentioned in the video, gets smoother the more you use it. (The reviewer said around 20 hours of playtime will smoothen out the movement)
Good tip with dead zone settings . I bought mine despite this review , as I needed the GA push pull controls . Mine does not have a big transverse wobble like your at all. It is a little sticky at the centre detent , but this apparently improves with wear . I'm very happy with my unit . Sure some aspects feel cheap , but for the price I think its a good buy.
Got mine. Using xbox. I'm a private pilot. My 2cents, better to learn on a yoke and use stick sometimes, both left hand to fly and right hand for settings, trim and flaps. You will likely rent Cessnas, Pipers and Beach more often than a stick plane. There is an easy fix for the yoke play on the shaft. My only wish is that the trim wheel held pitch better and the rudder triggers are useless. //ji
Honestly, return this and get the honeycomb setup instead, I did and don't regret it one bit, so much better for practicing and going over irl lessons. You won't regret it
I put two layers black duct tape on right sides of lever grooves. Feel SO much better now :) And my yoke doest wobble like that at all, so maybe they have impoved that on later or you just got crappy unit...
Yeh it's sticky as heck and the dead zone play isn't the best. Luckily turtle beach was able to help me out after my 6 months of use 'breaking it in". "Fresh from the box, the VelocityOne Flight's yoke may feel a bit 'sticky'. The yoke will break in over time; the more you use the controller the more this slight sticking will be reduced. You can also pull the yoke shaft out fully (carefully) and gently rub it down with a clean, dry paper towel, then carefully reinsert the yoke shaft. However, if you're uncomfortable with that much disassembly and reassembly, we recommend that you use the controller for a while and the problem will fade away with use." .....lol
I was just about to purchase this but now I'm looking at alternatives (maybe the Honeycomb or perhaps just wait for something more.. solid). For $360, i would expect a much better degree of construction and finish (the amount of input play and not being able to handle asymmetrical pitch pressure is NOT okay). I suppose I could take it apart and add an additional roller set (or linear bearings) along the control shaft but /why on earth/ would i want to do that for something having a premium price. Thank you for giving an honest review!
Thanks for pointing out the finer control problems with this, the cost compared to even smaller flaws isn’t something to ignore merely because it’s primarily for entertainment. I’ll probably need to keep searching for a decent setup but unfortunately it’s a niche market.
Hello, everybody's talking about how buttery smooth the yolk should be with the elevator inputs. But in real life ( I am a student pilot) it's a full-time workout while actually in the air. It's not that easy to push and pull even though I do use one hand on the yolk. The surface inputs take a little muscle. Just my 2 cent. I fly a Piper archer 2 and Cessna 172.
This varies massively from aircraft to aircraft (how old it is and how well maintained also play a big part)... I am a pilot IRL also. But the controls should never feel notchy or catch during operation, if they do then the control cables, rods or rose joints need attention!
I have flown many 172's and have been the owner of one. In 40yrs of flying I've never heard of anyone complaining about the controls being hard or stiff. Your instructor must not be teaching you how to use trim to relieve yoke pressure. Once you trim out the pressure on a plane that has proper rigging, longitudinal and lateral stability the plane will fly itself hands off the yoke.
@muhammadsteinberg The yoke has "pressure" before you use the trim genius. Lol don't tell me what was or wasn't taught to me . 40 years of flying and still don't know what you're talking about. Go figure. We're talking about the simulator yoke having absolutely no resistance. Let's stay on topic expert.
@terrillwilliams3643 I used your words. Who mentions yoke pressure being difficult and not mention trim? Kind of dumb of you. I've noticed a new wave of incompetent flyers in the air. You apparently are in that group.
Karl, if you just need the right part, why didn't you just get the Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrat? Just found it on Amazon when I was checking out the German prices for the VelocityOne.
I have the Turtle Beach rudders. I find them to be total garbage. Every time I turn off the sim, I need to manually remap them or the toe brakes are not automatically found. It's a known problem. How about you?
This is an upDate to my comment from six months ago… I wish I would’ve seen your honest review before I purchase mine you are correct buld quality is a bit crap I purchased it like yourself because everything else is twice as expensive. I use mine with Xbox. For those of us that use the Xbox only there was a major issue, when you go to upgrade the firmware with the Xbox two steps in you get a spinning ball of death that never stops and it doesn’t upgrade the firmware. I contacted customer support. They told me that I would need a Windows computer to plug it into do get behind the curtain and do the changes that need to be done by an actual software programmer this is the only answer I’m assuming xbox won’t talk to turtle Beach Leaving Xbox owners out in the cold find a windows, computer or go buy a windows computer, unacceptable sad to think of these bought and paid for UA-cam influencers never seem to mention these things. Funny how that happens. If anyone out there has a workaround for this, I would really appreciate you leaving it in the comments because turtle Beach is either unwilling or incapable of going out of thire way to help Xbox users with this issue
That movement on the yoke is not corrrect Karl, tell Turtle Beach. There is less then 1mm "wobble" on my yoke. The sticking yoke TB say it will ease off after a few weeks. Use the right hand hat switch for flaps.
Oh is there? Thats interesting, I'll email them! Thats not helpful though, it should be ready out of the box, a few weeks to some is 100 hours use, to others only 3 hours use, meaningless. I prefer using the switches, this is closer to what I do in real life.
@@KarlGosling Be glad you're not learning in a Piper aircraft Karl because then you'd be looking for a handbrake to operate the flaps :-) I find the hat switch easier, it's there at your thumb. Be aware that certain aspects of flying a real aircraft are easier than in the sim. One big sim drawback is the lack of FFB which makes trimming more difficult because you cannot fell when you;ve trimmed out any force. Good luck with your training
there is a very easy fix for this yoke issue. just open it up and remove both the plastic stops from both springs. supereasy. I have 2 left hands and i managed. problem solved. feels supersmooth. the wobble u can get rid off by buying a 3d printed mod that is very easy to attach. some dude on etsy sells it. works like a charm. costs like 25 euros. i totally agree that you probably should not buy this product if you don't feel like fixing these issues which is very understandable considering the price.
Thanks for this review. These niggles would drive me nuts, specuilly any wobble, loose throttles and sticking motions. Saved me a good chunk of cash there. Cheers.
Hi Karl, this is the first video of yours I have seen, I'm sure I'll now see more. What kind of monitor do your have? does it bend at an angle? Am I that behind the times? What the hell is going on? thanks.
Thanks for the review. Wish I've seen it sooner. Because this yoke is unflyable. The stickyness of the pitch is too much to bear. Small adjustments cannot be made. Which makes the yoke useless. The throttle's are also loose and have the same height when switching to a flap handle, resulting in unintentionally touching the other levers which fall to 0 input because they are so loose. I've returned mine and instead wen't with the Thrustmaster Boeing Yoke which handles like a dream.
Great review and love how you point out the issues and how they can affect the overal experience, however I am just looking for a better solution than a regular controller, so I think that for the price it is a great flight controller
Thank you for the detailed review. Unfortunately, the point about the yoke was not addressed in any other review. That's why I had already bought it. I am also quite disappointed with the product. The reason is the imprecise handling when pitching with the yoke. With the inaccurate spring tension of the yoke, it is hardly possible to get a decent flare for landing. With keyboard control, landing could hardly be worse. So far I haven't been able to get used to it.
Yeah it's just bad IMO mate, I know a lot of the early reviews were sponsored content (so adverts rather than reviews) which is why certain things were omitted :(
Well Karl thats turtle Beach for you, I used to use their headsets a ton but they kept breaking in the same exact spot so I no longer use anything they offer. Untill their quality is better I'm not willing to give them any more money. Sucks it didn't work out how you hoped.
Sounds like it suffers from a lot of the same problems that my old Saitek Pro Flight yoke used to have. I'm tempted to upgrade to one of those Honeycomb yokes; I've heard good things about them
@@KarlGosling I actually have the Honeycomb yolk, not the throttle yet because I'm still using the throttle from my X52 hotas, but it's far better than the Turtle Beach. There is zero wobble in the controls. The Turtle Beach seems closer to the old CH or Saitek models than they do to the Honeycomb, especially when see you use the throttle. I will agree that the pitch is still too stiff. Pitch gets stiffer with air speed so I don't know why a company hasn't come up with a resistance, depending on the speed but then that changes with fly-by-wire systems. You didn't bring up if there are any detents or dead zones in the TB yolk.
@@kalel33 I still have nightmares from my Saitek Yoke days!! It was like flaring with hiccups!😁 I think mine was even stiffer than average but nothing could fix it! This has effectively pointed me to the ‘joystick route’ Hoping to get a Foxtrot stick from Honeycomb plus an Xbox hub to try to get my saitek pedals working, hopefully early next year and in the meantime I will use my trusty hotas one!
Similar experience for me with flight gear. I love flying too but.... My Thrustmaster sliding throttle was horribly sticky until I got an aftermarket bearing kit fix, my very new Logitech rudder peddles keep losing the signal so my rudders flicks on and off (I thought it was my bad piloting until I checked an external view). I'm still checking what the problem is with that and might have to return them. My joystick is ok... Enough.... I suppose. 🙄 I sound like a miserable git but I do still enjoy flying when it all works and it's a less intense break from racing. 🛩️
Just finished watching your review and I can only assume you had either a faulty unit or they improved on the QC as I have none of the issues you are advising here, did you end up returning it in the end?
If there was an elegant (no bolt or profile swapping) way to switch between sim racing and flight sim, I would totally get into the flight sim. There’s a small biz idea waiting to formulate
I also use the same rig for both. I slide the seat forward for driving. Then to fly, I slide it back. My rudder pedals are on the floor behind my car pedals. My flight throttle is bolted to the left of the rig. My joystick is on an old monitor arm that swings around into position. (You can even use your clutch and accelerator as rudder pedals with a bit of mucking around with some freeware software.) For me, Switching from driving to flying takes seconds.
Hi Karl. I appeciate the time you have taken to review this product. I am saving to learn to fly and gain the PPL. I'm also looking to set up a home flight sim in order to pratice etc. outside of lessons and real world flying. Keep up the good work.
But why not considering buying the Bravo Quadrant from Honeycomb? I mean just the throttle quadrant since you have a stick and if you fly a Robin in real life it should be enough so you don't need the Alpha Yoke. Worth mentioning Bravo doesn't have the push pull style throttles like a Robin plane (?). I have a friend that said Bravo is pretty solid and he like me has a lot of DIY all metal custom cockpit stuff so his opinion worth a little imho. Sorry for 8 months delay... youtube showed me this just now :D Cheers and congrats for real life flying!!!
I just purchased this a few days ago for Xbox x,I wholeheartedly agree with your review👍.I watched your review before purchasing but thought oh well maybe you were just unlucky and mine will be ok .....big mistake !.I should have gone for the Honeycomb or the Thrustmaster Boeing one instead although I hear reports it is not perfect either. Turtlebeach could definitely fix the common problems but probably won't sadly.
Its almost as if it was built for entertainment and not legitimate pilot training. Not really anything that a recreational player would find problems with. Its nice to know. But I, as a flight sim hobbyist, wouldn't find these problems big or even bad. Its good to know about but worth is for price compared to high end ones at $400+, especially for someone who plays as a hobby. If you use it to train and hone skills the FOR SURE spend the money on a high quality, accurate to life yoke.
I went through 2 defective ones and gave up on it. I loved the throttle quadrant and wish they sold it separately but the yoke itself was in my opinion cheap crap.
Finally a good review…. A really good review. Exactly my thoughts… The cheap plastic and especially the play in the yoke… and all the wrong feelings of levers. It’s a product with no quality at all, with a ridiculous price… I just can’t believe people in reviews saying it’s a good yoke. It’s crap… Jesus!!! Crap. It doesn’t even have the option of rudder pedals… and that ridiculous solution of each pedal in each stick, doesn’t work. A real plane is flow with one hand on yoke and the other on power. Not with both hands on yoke. Period. And people don’t comment this…??? saying it’s very good.???? The ignorance is absurd. And you know what happen if you use one hand (the right way to fly), it sticks… it’s CRAP. So thank you,… very good review. 👍👍👍 Do you think if with glue in the yoke, you could stop with the play in the yoke?
This is why I made the review mate, it seems like all the others were sent it for free and told to be positive?! Either that or they have no clue how it is supposed to feel and operate?! But yes a useless product IMO with a very high price. Maybe, I'm yet to look.
I would think as decent VR setup it should be able to show your Pilots autonomy and all the Cockpit features like the Yoke & Throttle Quadrant as you operate them.
Thanks Karl 🙂 I don't comment much, but sure appreciate your advice. Still loving my g29, 2 years later. Getting into DCS now, F/A-18C. Keep up the great work 😎
Here's hoping Karl gets that Keeps sponsorship soon 🤣 (only jesting, nice video as usual). Edit. Every Turtle beach product I've used has felt cheap, and the cost also probably reflects the lower production numbers they will make of these.
@@KarlGosling 🤣 holy shit, I'm adding psychic to my CV. Agreed, no excuse, would prefer it be £50 more expensive for what feels like £100 worth more quality.
In terms of using the stick and TB throttle together - could you not just mount the TB yoke out of the way (plugged into both the throttle and PC), create a custom profile for the TB yoke and then delete the aileron and elevator axes? You could then use your stick and Turtle Beach throttle together.
@@KarlGosling Oh well, thought I'd mention - I enjoyed your review though. I use a honeycomb alpha and bravo, which I'm going to stick with I think. Although the Cessna style throttle quadrant does appeal though as I mostly fly single engine GA.
I had the same thought, so scrolled down to see who said it first :) ... Looks like it is time for a longer USB / EXTENSION and a DIY add on to your RIG where you can hang the Yoke. ... I am still considering the Honeycomb Throttle as it can be connected standalone and has a rubber accessory that makes trimmer wheel bigger. Good Luck Karl.
I have the Logitech X56 here too but thought there's so many reviews already I'd pass. With this Turtle Beach stuff being poorly represented on UA-cam I thought it would be a good idea to get a nice honest review up! :)
Love how the throttle lever fell down when you briefly demonstrated yanking the yoke around, absolute rubbish. How could they think no resistance was an acceptable design, it can't even resist gravity!
I only briefly got into flight sim, then I got my pilots license and fly for real! I ended up just not using it as it was so bad and eventually put it on marketplace.
Karl, you are a DIY man, pull the throttle apart, rewire to a bodnar interface and then use it as a standalone throttle/prop/mixture. very easy and quick. Not a big job.
Just to clear up a mistake, I mentioned you cannot see the shaft rotating (roll), this is correct as it's internal rotation but you can feel and see the play before it registers an input and before you feel any resistance/engagement.
Do you have any other Flight Sim videos other than this one? I can't seem to find any, but then I'm half-blind and stroke-ridden!

Must be your system. My yoke does not have any play.

Thanks mate, channel is only just over 2 years old so I can't complain really :)
Agreed.
Now, in August 2024, they must have listened to your complaints as my VelocityOne no longer has any of those wiggles or slipages. I do agree it does seem a little cheap in construction. Thanks for your review.
Good to hear!
I returned it after a few days...thank you
For the price it's total crap IMO mate.
Did it ever go away? Supposedly it goes after 20 hrs of use
Thanks mate!
You get a sub for calling out the Tomy Turbo! 😂
Oh yeah and also for giving potential customers like me a comprehensive and polished review based on your genuine experience.
Happy (vapour) trails, chap. 👍🏾
lol Thanks mate!
If you decide to keep it and end up taking it apart to improve the play in the yoke, please do a video on it. Will be nice to see.
Will do mate!
your video is important because you address something that i want to know, which is the quality of the more expensive stuff.
in my country we say "what is cheap becomes expensive" this means that buying cheap is and will always be expensive, because if you are passionate about simulators like i am, you'll always improve over time, but we always make the mistake of buying bad quality stuff first, for all sorts of reasons, in my case, monetary. so i take care to use my money wisely
thanks and subscribed
Agreed Leo!
Agreed Leo!
Yeah it very poor for the money.
Agreed mate! Thanks :)
Wow thats so cheap!
Karl, I love your honest reviesws a lot, that not self evident! Thanks a lot!
My pleasure!
I have the same and what bothers me the most is that wobbling gap as you also said. It addinional is causing some ugly noise from the plastic using the yoke with only one hand. I decided to use it until the honeycomb xpc is releasing this year, they are definetly doing a better job in terms of quality
Yeah I'm just going to sell mine, it's unusable when compared to real life IME.
No way! I had a Turning Turbo Dashboard! I remember loosing sleep with excitement before the Christmas I got that. Then of course being predicably disappointed when I played it. It did become an amazing prop for adventures though :)
I loved mine as a kid, even though it was so simple! :) lol
Just plug in a joystick Karl, you can still use the throttle quadrant section with a stick.
Yes but then where is the Yoke going to sit?! Remember this is a full motion rig so it can't just dangle down the side! lol
I dabble in a few hobbies! lol
Started seeing your channel seeing the Logitech G Pro Review that I got one as well, is so cool to see that I’m not the only sim lover on my free time as a pilot!!! Love the content, cheers.
Indeed! Got my PPL (A) in October and am currently flying a Skyranger Swift until I pick up my CT2K next week, love it!
//ji
Was going to buy one in the morning.
You just saved Me £350.. 👍
Yeah it's just bad!
Honestly, return this and get the honeycomb setup instead, I did and don't regret it one bit, so much better for practicing and going over irl lessons. You won't regret it
What about the trim wheel? I've heard it's really bad
However, if you're uncomfortable with that much disassembly and reassembly, we recommend that you use the controller for a while and the problem will fade away with use."
.....lol
Thanks for the feedback. What about the wobbling ?
I was just about to purchase this but now I'm looking at alternatives (maybe the Honeycomb or perhaps just wait for something more.. solid). For $360, i would expect a much better degree of construction and finish (the amount of input play and not being able to handle asymmetrical pitch pressure is NOT okay). I suppose I could take it apart and add an additional roller set (or linear bearings) along the control shaft but /why on earth/ would i want to do that for something having a premium price.
Thank you for giving an honest review!
Karl’s smile is amazing :D
lol Cheers!
This is the first time I've seen a video of yours about flight sims, pretty awesome you're training for a license.
I've only done one other, when I made the DIY quick release HOTAS/Yoke mount.
Thanks for pointing out the finer control problems with this, the cost compared to even smaller flaws isn’t something to ignore merely because it’s primarily for entertainment. I’ll probably need to keep searching for a decent setup but unfortunately it’s a niche market.
For the price it's very disappointing!
Thank you for what is clearly a well thught out and objective review.
Glad it was helpful!
@@KarlGosling The "notchy" feeling should not be a thing. I Agree, but in most GA you feel the forces of nature through that yoke 💪💪
As I said in the video mate I need the vernier controls which Honeycomb do not have.
Thank you for the honest review, just saved me a lot of money. Enjoyed the video so much I decided to subscribe.
lol Cheers!
I have the Turtle Beach rudders. I find them to be total garbage. Every time I turn off the sim, I need to manually remap them or the toe brakes are not automatically found. It's a known problem. How about you?
Never tried the rudders but this is crap, got rid of it.
Thats not at all acceptable IMO mate!
@@flyhalf2 I actually had my first trial flight in a PA28! lol
Yeah it's never going to be 100% right, no sim ever is... but better than nothing! :)
there is a very easy fix for this yoke issue. just open it up and remove both the plastic stops from both springs.
Yeah exactly mate, you don't pay all that money and then have to fix it!
The maker in me is tempted to take it apart, remove the detent springs and attache the yoke more rigid.
The lever is extremely loose, and if you intend to use VR, good luck with those input keys. The only thing I like about this product is the mounting.
Yeah overall it's crap.
A great video and explanation, I just bought one. Thanks mate.
I really enjoy your videos and am impressed by how well you've done .
Thanks for this review. These niggles would drive me nuts, specuilly any wobble, loose throttles and sticking motions. Saved me a good chunk of cash there. Cheers.
I just can't use it mate, it's just sat here doing nothing.
Hi Karl, this is the first video of yours I have seen, I'm sure I'll now see more. What kind of monitor do your have? does it bend at an angle? Am I that behind the times? What the hell is going on? thanks.
Hi mate, I have three 55" LG OLED displays with very small bezels and a kit to hide them which is why it looks like one big one.
You saved me $350. Thank you. I'm going to go with the Honeycomb.
Good choice mate!
Yeah utter crap mate, mine is gone too.
Great review and love how you point out the issues and how they can affect the overal experience, however I am just looking for a better solution than a regular controller, so I think that for the price it is a great flight controller
It's basically unusable mate, stick with your controller or save up a bit more for something better.
Idk why he says it’s unusable, that must be his unit because if that was true it wouldn’t be so highly received by everyone else
@@mysticalrandomness4282sponsored reviews basically
You have just saved my 340 Euros! Thanks man.
No problem 👍
All in all, would you recommend the Honeycomb over this one?
I've not used it but from what I can see yes!
I'm very tempted to just return it mate.
Sounds like it suffers from a lot of the same problems that my old Saitek Pro Flight yoke used to have. I'm tempted to upgrade to one of those Honeycomb yokes; I've heard good things about them
They review a little better than this, but not much... once you find an honest review.
Have you looked at the Honeycomb throttle quad? Has trim and is separate, but then you miss out on the Cessna style throttle levers
and you get the flap lever :)
I don't really use MSFS since getting my PPL and a little plane, but I had considered them yes mate.
it never came to my mind to use my race rig for my flight sims too. i wonder if i can getvthe actuators to work with it.
You sure can!
Just finished watching your review and I can only assume you had either a faulty unit or they improved on the QC as I have none of the issues you are advising here, did you end up returning it in the end?
No but I wish I had, it's still here and I don't use it, totally useless.
You can use the Honeycomb Throttle quadrant independent and use a joystick. You can buy the quadrant you dont need to buy the yoke.
Yes mate you can, but if you want a yoke then you need that too! lol
If there was an elegant (no bolt or profile swapping) way to switch between sim racing and flight sim, I would totally get into the flight sim. There’s a small biz idea waiting to formulate
There is mate, thats literally what I have here, takes less then 10 seconds! :)
@@KarlGosling what are you using? I would love to swap easily also.
Did you ever take it apart and fix the play?
My husband accidently put this into xbox instead of pc. How does he get it out of xbox and into pc mode. He thinks it is an expensive paperweight.
That slip at the end made me chuckle lad
Yeah sometimes shit happens! lol
Should I get this or the Logitech Yoke?
3:11 “two, four, six, eight, ten.. 12 buttons here”
There is 10 my man😂
Least of my worries with this piece of crap! lol
Thanks so much for your attention to detail on this one.
Glad it was helpful mate!
Hi Karl. I appeciate the time you have taken to review this product. I am saving to learn to fly and gain the PPL. I'm also looking to set up a home flight sim in order to pratice etc. outside of lessons and real world flying. Keep up the good work.
It's a great experience learning to fly, enjoy yourself mate!
I don't trust TurtleLeech to make headphones, let alone anything you have to interact with. lol.
Glad I watched this before I bought thanks
No problem 👍
How does it connect to the XBOX? Is it wireless or does it come with a very long cable? What type of cable please?
But why not considering buying the Bravo Quadrant from Honeycomb? I mean just the throttle quadrant since you have a stick and if you fly a Robin in real life it should be enough so you don't need the Alpha Yoke. Worth mentioning Bravo doesn't have the push pull style throttles like a Robin plane (?).
I have a friend that said Bravo is pretty solid and he like me has a lot of DIY all metal custom cockpit stuff so his opinion worth a little imho.
Sorry for 8 months delay... youtube showed me this just now :D
Cheers and congrats for real life flying!!!
I don't use it at all now, passed my PPL and bought a little plane so just fly IRL :)
@@KarlGosling Awesome to hear that! Fly safe and have fun!!
Ah mate sorry your experience is also poor, return it if you can?
R throttle, mixture and prop levers (black, blue & red) programmable?
Thanks for your honest review that I find informative
No problem!
Which VR Headset are you using if you don't mind me asking? I've got a Quest 2 and am getting ready to try flying in VR.
I've had loads but right now Q2 and Pico 4.
@@KarlGosling Thanks! Can't get the Pico 4 in the US though.
Is there Force feedback on it?
lol No mate!
I got the thrustmaster boeing tca yoke which is really imo maybe that would work for you
THANKS A LOT for your review. You just avoided me a big mistake buying this cr*p !
No worries!
I think you just saved me about $350. Thanks!
So if I’m hearing you right, what you’re saying is that you fly in VR?
Sometimes, this is my preference but it's tricky feeling for all your controls.
I went through 2 defective ones and gave up on it. I loved the throttle quadrant and wish they sold it separately but the yoke itself was in my opinion cheap crap.
Totally agree mate!
Finally a good review…. A really good review. Exactly my thoughts…
The cheap plastic and especially the play in the yoke… and all the wrong feelings of levers. It’s a product with no quality at all, with a ridiculous price…
I just can’t believe people in reviews saying it’s a good yoke.
Do you think if with glue in the yoke, you could stop with the play in the yoke?
This is why I made the review mate, it seems like all the others were sent it for free and told to be positive?! Either that or they have no clue how it is supposed to feel and operate?!
But yes a useless product IMO with a very high price.
Maybe, I'm yet to look.
I would think as decent VR setup it should be able to show your Pilots autonomy and all the Cockpit features like the Yoke & Throttle Quadrant as you operate them.
Sure does.
Thanks Karl 🙂
I don't comment much, but sure appreciate your advice.
Still loving my g29, 2 years later.
Getting into DCS now, F/A-18C.
Keep up the great work 😎
Same here! Im loving the F/A-18C, it's my first module apart from fc3 planes. Next module is the Viper.
@@honeybadger1656 I bought the Super Carrier module to go with mine, haven't tried it yet though
How can u fly Microsoft flight sim in vr
Here's hoping Karl gets that Keeps sponsorship soon 🤣 (only jesting, nice video as usual).
Edit. Every Turtle beach product I've used has felt cheap, and the cost also probably reflects the lower production numbers they will make of these.
You joke, wait till you see another video I have coming in the future! 😆
Lower production is a factor I suppose, no excuse for being shit though! lol
With very long USB lead yes but I'm low on space and my rig is 5 DOF motion so it can't just dangle off or be too close to it.
@@KarlGosling Oh well, thought I'd mention - I enjoyed your review though. I use a honeycomb alpha and bravo, which I'm going to stick with I think. Although the Cessna style throttle quadrant does appeal though as I mostly fly single engine GA.
I had the same thought, so scrolled down to see who said it first :)
Glad to see you doing flight sim stuff as always love the channel mate
I have the Logitech X56 here too but thought there's so many reviews already I'd pass.
With this Turtle Beach stuff being poorly represented on UA-cam I thought it would be a good idea to get a nice honest review up! :)
Love how the throttle lever fell down when you briefly demonstrated yanking the yoke around, absolute rubbish. How could they think no resistance was an acceptable design, it can't even resist gravity!
Yes exactly! Lol
wish I'd watched this first! great vid
Great review. Thanks
Slap some super glue where to yoke connects to the shaft and it will be solid!
I thought about that but the middle detent totally ruins it, useless.
Didn't know you also review flight gear. It's been a while since the review was out. Have you figured out how to reduce the "play" in the yoke?
I only briefly got into flight sim, then I got my pilots license and fly for real!
I ended up just not using it as it was so bad and eventually put it on marketplace.
Karl, you are a DIY man, pull the throttle apart, rewire to a bodnar interface and then use it as a standalone throttle/prop/mixture. very easy and quick. Not a big job.
Yeah thats definitely an option, doesn't make the product any better though and still cost me £350 for the privilege! lol
