You guys deserve way more attention.
Fredrik Knudsen Oh damn, I watch your videos. Cool to see you like this stuff.
How random to see you here!
this year they will oh they will
Fredrik Knudsen I feel like I know you.
Longest Johns -> knudsen -> cat daddy... small world huh?
Bonus question on geography test: What is the distance from Ushant to Scilly?
"Oh shit, I've got this!"
33.1 to be precise!
@@ThornForTheWynn so your saying the 35 leagues in the song is incorrect?
@@zyanidwarfare5634 I just looked it up, and I was incorrect. 32.5 is closer, but to a sailor it would be more like 35 due to wind and tides.
@@ThornForTheWynn so what you're saying...is that they're technically correct...which is the best kind of correct.
@@Akatsuki69387 Indeed!
Bonus points fir the reference.
It's nice to find a group that sings shanties without going into a punk song.
ikr
Nothing wrong with some good folk punk, but yeah, just regular ol' shanties are wonderful too
IM A SAILOR PIG! AND I LOST MY LEG!!
Ew do people really do that?
i can only think of one group that does that
Farewell and adieu, to you Spanish ladies
Farewell and adieu, to you ladies of Spain
For we received orders
For to sail for Old England
But we hope, very soon, we shall see you again
We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors
We'll rant and we'll roar along the salt seas
Until we strike soundings in the channel of Old England
From Ushant to Scilly is 35 leagues
We hove our ship to, with the wind at Southwest boys
We hove our ship to, our soundings to see
We rounded and sounded got 45 fathoms
We squared our main yard and up channel steered we
We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors
We'll rant and we'll roar along the salt seas
Until we strike soundings in the channel of Old England
From Ushant to Scilly is 35 leagues
The next land we made was called "The Deadman"
Next ram heads off Plymouth, off Portland and Wight
We sailed by Beachy, by Fairlee and Dungeness
'Till we came abreast of the south foreland light
We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors
We'll rant and we'll roar along the salt seas
Until we strike soundings in the channel of Old England
From Ushant to Scilly is 35 leagues
Then the signal was made for the grand fleet to anchor
All in the Downs that night for to lie
Then it's stand by your stoppers, steer clear your shank-painters
Haul up your clew garnets, let tacks and sheet fly
We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors
We'll rant and we'll roar along the salt seas
Until we strike soundings in the channel of Old England
From Ushant to Scilly is 35 leagues
So let every man toss off a full bumper
And let every man drink off a full glass
We'll drink and be merry and drown melancholy
Singing, here's a good health to each true-hearted lass
We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors
We'll rant and we'll roar along the salt seas
Until we strike soundings in the channel of Old England
From Ushant to Scilly is 35 leagues
My husband and I were in Dublin in November. We saw you on BBC in our hotel. Made 2 new American fans! Keep up the great work. Cheers
@Polarisque british overseas service later (bbc world services) and for a very long time like before 60s
To those who are dumb like me, a league is 3 miles, not a form of currency.
Referring to the line "From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues"
I'm not so far from Ushant, unless that souwester is raging, like tonight. Would be tacking forever to get nowhere,
a league is 3 nautical miles, or about 3.4 land miles.
This video is now 4 years old from a week ago, my how time flies!
WE'LL RANT AND WE'LL ROA-
I'm here a little late
all hail the longest of all johns!
LONG LIVE!
I'm a proud American and always have been but today I'm going to rant and roar like a true British sailor
We’ll rant and we’ll roar like true British sailors 🇬🇧
This makes me miss my days at sea 😢
lyrics: Farewell and adieu unto you Spanish ladies
Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain
For it's we've received orders for to sail for old England
But we hope very soon we shall see you again
We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors
We'll rant and we'll roar across the salt seas
Until we strike soundings in the Channel of Old England
From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues
We hove our ship to with the wind at sou'west, boys
We hove our ship to, our soundings to see
So we rounded and sounded; got forty-five fathoms
We squared our main yard and up channel steered we
Now the first land we made it is called the Deadman
Next Ram Head off Plymouth, off Portland the Wight
We sailed by Beachy, by Fairlee and Dungeness
Till we came abreast of the South Foreland Light

And let every man drink off a full glass
And we'll drink and be merry and drown melancholy
Singing, here's a good health to each true-hearted lass
Psychotic Slender these are not the lyrics they sing
V3n d3ta they're the most common lyrics to the shanty. That's the purpose of them being here. If you'd like to make corrections goahead nd repost what they say in this video :)
Or just use your ears
@@nicshepherd7726 doesn't hurt anybody to write the lyrics.
Thank you
You guys were amazing on the TV tonight! South west pride! Well done.

I have a suggestion: could you guys sing We All Lift Together? You know, the song from Warframe. I feel like you guys would put a nice spin on it.
That's a great idea
JD already has done a version which is available to download on our discord
@@thelongestjohns Oh. I'm too poor to afford Discord.
@@physical_insanity Discord is free? There's nitro which costs, but you really don't need it.
@@boonthrall5240 The joke is that I'm so poor that I can't even afford free software.
-also, I do own discord, but it doesn't click with me, so i never use it to begin with-
Dat major chord at the end, doe.
No, but really. I love you dudes. Keep it up.
Here's a story
Recently i've found out im part Irish. Now every time I see a flat cap, I yell, "FLAT CAP"
I came back to this video and saw the flat cap, then remembered why i love this youtube channel and why i love shanties
This is the song that got me hooked. I remember looking to see how "the Drunken Sailor" song went. Little did I know what I was missing out on. Now, 2 yrs later, I am planning a trip to Ferndale MI to watch these boys live.
Marvelous, spectacular, lovely; nautical and a grand entry in the long and storied lineage of ballads of any kind. Bravo! Really glad to see, following you along remotely, you merry lot keep at your wonderful work!
Its so hard to just find some good shanties, just dumped all 3 albums on Spotify into a playlist to listen props to u guys
You guys make this look easy... youre all insane and this sounds beautiful! Much love
When sung by Quint in Jaws, it was because Robert Shaw was drunk and forgot his lines
Wait…One if the most iconic and chilling comedic moments in the film happened because the actor was piss drunk on the set?
@@ilovemuslimfood666 pretty much
I *LOVE* it!
AHHHH! That is where I've heard it. Was driving me nuts...
Yes, I know the pirate joke about the wheel down his drawers...🤣
I love this song I remember an old boy who used to be a sailor that used to sing this in my old mans pub I miss that old lad I hope hes resting well
This is my favorite sea shanty, and yours is definitely the best version in my opinion!
This is gorgeous (and the song the Swallows sing as they set off)
You guys are amazing, it sounds epic. I'd love to hear you sing leave her Johnny leave her
they are doing a project with a bunch of fan added audio/video of the song as well! i forget what day its gonna happen but I remember the video about it, their version by themselves is also top notch
Just seen you lads on the tv show. Best sound on there by far I reckon!
Come up to Withernsea and sing at the Pirate Festival next summer!
Thank you so much!! If you know anyone there, we'd love to get in touch :)
Hi and thanks for replying so quickly!
You would just need to contact the Withernsea Carnival committee if you're interested in performing.

There's a pirate festival????
@@GoFbassist You'd be surprised how many shanty festivals there are
What have a stumbled upon!!!??? This is wonderful!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰
Really love this old sea shanty, I'd never heard it before but read about it in the Wilbur Smith novel "Monsoon". When I googled it I learned it was a real song!
What a wonderfully true voice Mr Hollum has
"Indeed."
One of the oldest sea shanty's from around 1625...great performance
boys you should have gone through. I'm so..... miffed. I hope you carry this on. Cheers boys from a crappie week you've picked me up.
Love this, guys! And your album recording on Spotify. Big Jaws and Quint fan here, so you inspired me to pick up the guitar and attempt an arrangement based on your recording. Sussex native too, so lovely to hear the lines about Beachy Head, etc. Cheers!
I just like how happy they look as they sing.
Our boys have lost weight since this post. God bless. Fuckin gems every one.
Yes, loads! JD and Andy, especially! Robbie and Dave have always been string beans haha. And I mean that as a compliment. LOL I'm from the country and people often use say "string bean" to describe a slender person. And hats off to Andy and JD! It's very very hard to lose weight 😔, and they've done very well!
... Assassins Creed: Black Flag, anyone?
Gorgeous, as always. You guys are a gem.
Back again! 💛 An oldie but a goodie. 🤩🥳
Great to hear a proper version of this great song from HMS NELLIE 1742. Thanks lads.
A snatch of this song was used in The movie Jaws, sung by Quint, the fisherman. But he sang, we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. A folk song like this often has more than one version.
Very good. Came across you guys after looking up sea shanties. I'm from Gloucestershire and is good to hear a west country group.
Wonderful voices!
You guys really deserve more attention. Remind me of The Steel Wheels (Americana/Folk band from TN) in all the best ways.
You gusy should sing the megalodon song from sea of thieves! I'd listen to that on loop for a million times and never get sick. Your voices are so incredible! I love all your stuff, thank you for making such masterpieces
It's been 3 years, dear. Better suggest that under one of their newer videos.
This is brilliant! Well done lads.
Your music just makes happy! Keep it going guys!
I've recently been turned into to this song, and I love this version ❤️ hoping to learn more traditional tunes!!
You guys are so amazing I accidentally discovered you to be honest while trying to find Spanish ladies from Jaws but then I wondered hmmmm.... Let's find the best version I can and you guys have it now let's drink to every true hearted Las!
Another version that avoids repeating the phrase is
So we'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors,
We'll range and we'll roam over all the salt seas.
Thanks Willie!
"Cage goes in the water..? you go in the water..? Shark's in the water... Our shark...
Loving the subtitles. "let every man drink colorful glass will drink and be merry and drown Ellen collie". Poor Ellen..
Love you guys.
Beautiful song! Greetings from Spain ;)
This is incredible
Man this sounds beautiful. I can’t help but wish I was a man so I could have an adequate deep voice to sing all the sea shanties I love.
Díky!
So why the decision on this one to end with the Picardy 3rd? I was kinda shocked, and smiled when I first heard it. So many of them end with that power chord, open 5th. You guys are wonderful. Keep up the awesome work
When I heard the final chord, I remembered that I really have not seen an episode of Star Trek Next Generation in a long time. Initiating Picard maneuver now!
Great to see you posting again!
what a wonderfully true voice Mr. Hollum possesses
Oh my goodness, that's beautiful.
Cracking version of a well-loved song.
You may like to know that those way-points in the south west are actually Dodman Point and Rame Head off Plymouth, both on the south Cornish coast.
John Orange: Unless I misheard they pronounced "Dodman" as "Dead man" (which was it's original name because of the number of wrecks in that area).
Well done gents great version
Merci les garçons . Très beau .
This makes me very happy!!
good song
Hope yall can go far and be known by many !!
2020 and i still play this
That's awesome guys
Sehr schönes Lied mag sowas. Bitte mehr Meer 🌊
November 2018 and still repeat this video
January 2019 masih dengerin ini brok ✌🌴
Thanks for being so great!
I just found you the other night, and now you've got me staying up way too late listening to your songs. Haha.
Hey Longest John's do you fellows you could do "let the waters roar Jack"?
So taking soundings is about finding what material can be retrieved from the sea floor to compare with detail on the Admiralty chart in lieu of knowing the ship's position? In truth they're lost until they see Dodman's point. No matter - there’s always the rum ration. I guess this dates from before Mr Harrison’s marine chronometer?
Taking sounding is measuring the depth with a lead weight on a line. If depth is recorded on your chart it can at least narrow down your position. As a bonus, a depression in the base of the weight (the depression is still sometimes found in modern sounding weights though I've never heard of anyone using it!) would be filled with something sticky like tallow which material from the bottom would stick to. Charts still today will record what the bottom is made from -- mostly this is useful for deciding where to anchor (e.g. mud is great, sand so-so and cobbles or rock bad) but again knowing this can help to narrow down where you are.
Excellent.
Awesome arrangement!!
I feel like I was born in the wrong century.
Great Job !
Nice job guys.
When i struggle to finish my work, i put on a sea shanty and i instantly get the motivation and energy to finish it. ( funny is that i work in front of a computer, but it steel works :D )
I do too! I listen to sea shanties and Scottish folk songs on my headphones in the office and it keeps me on track and going all day!
Good
Absolutely love it!
Well that was surprisingly impressive, really well done in every way
I love this!

The island at st ives, nice one guys
Im from Spain and i dont know this Song before .. im confuse , but that was impresive. Great job guys xD 🤘
It's a Sea Shanty, but I'm almost sure it's not actually from Spain.
Its a sea shanty that describes a British fleet returning from Spain during or after the peninsular war. Although Harrisons chronometer had been invented and longitude could be established, it was still the custom to take soundings to see if a turn to starboard to enter the English channel was safe (google Sir Cloudesley Shovell). When you do that, the first sight of land is a cliff called Dodman. The other places mentioned are headlands and landmarks seen as you sail eastwards along the channel. The Downs are a famous anchorage near Ramsgate. Ive seen all of them having in stages sailed the length of the channel.
It's an English sea shanty about English sailors having to leave their Spanish women after the peninsular wars.
You Guys Are Great!
i put yall in my manly playlist, you deserve a spot
