- Lacking access to a real ship’s cargo hold, we decided to sing this song in the next best location that was easily available to us. Some imagination may be required...

Last time I was this early John Paul Jones was a pirate
You made me chuckle with this :)
Lmao this style of comment is great when the joke is appropriate
Louis Lobb I’m Scottish, that man did us proud! Always happy to screw over the English.
@@crazyscottishhighlander3854 I'm American thanks for him
@@crazyscottishhighlander3854 Yall raise one *ell of a guy
Considering how valuable sugar was and how far singing voices can travel you'd think this would be a risky song to sing
Considering songs like these were sung by slaves, I think that was the point.
@@TurtleTime26 wasn't it pirates, sailors... Etc singing this
@@bravosix5974 nope, it was slaves
@@bravosix5974 I doubt pirates would be singing a song about working for a company.
@@TurtleTime26I also didn't think sea shanties would be so popular 300 years later, it is what it is
To clarify the line "screwing cotton": when cotton was being packed into a ships hold, it was compressed through the use of a machine called a Marengo, which workers would turn like a screw to press more cotton in.
I wonder how many people get the wrong idea from that first line!
@@chrisharmon I can confirm, i did, it changed the whole meaning of this song. lmaoo
Well that changes the meaning of Fire Marengo aswell
So they're not putting their wank in the cotton. Shame.
I can hear the similarities from Warframe's version of this shanty, "Sleeping in the cold below". Sea shanties is the best genre! Even in a sci-fi world.
Was waiting for someone to mention this, idk the comparison if it is inspired or just sounds similar
@@uphi-downlow5792 I'd say it's probably inspired with how similar the melody is
Same here
I was thinking the same thing.
hell yes, I wasn't imagining it after all! "Hey ho! below, below had so much nostalgia for me!
You guys have no idea what these songs do for me being a prior Navy Sailor
Keep it up!!!
Thanks so much Albert, glad it means so much to you
Does it make your butt hurt??
@@cdeck2228It does make yorr butt hurt.
These guys are my deployed anthems
JD - “Hmmm what’s gonna make this better?”
Robbie - “I know!” * points at shed
Great acoustics in the shed
Nah man it's the hold
@Derian Setoguchi I guess you can call the earth a space faring vessel
I recognise that “hold” 😁 great use of props👍, lovely rendition.
Tis a fine ship :)
Last time I was this early I thought we'd cruise the sea for american gold. We'd fire no guns, shed no tears.
Do you happen to be a broken man on a Halifax pier?
Wishing you were in Sherbrooke now I assume?
Appreciating the “shed” no tears
@@thelongestjohns accidental genius lol, loves this one!
thx, I went back to listen to it, I may not be living near the sea, but I can enjoy a good song
Lovely to have this come up on a "Traditional Songs" playlist seemingly based on my own past saves. It must have been one of the first TLJ videos I saw and I have so many saved (including much earlier ones found more recently), I'd hazard a bet they don't even remember singing half of them! I certainly still sometimes feel as though I've run into an old friend when a rarer vid crops up. You know that, "I haven't even thought about them in ages but it feels like we only hung around together yesterday" feeling?
Amazing singing, and another gem of a song I have not heard until now. Already added it to my Spotify. That must have been a very cramped shooting location, especially with all the beautiful tight angles and shots in the video. Great song and I hope you guys have a wonderful day.
Oooooh, yes! It's not a big shed by any means, but was a lot of fun as a result
I wish I was in Mobile Bay, screwing cotton all of the day
But I'm stowing sugar in the hold below,
Below, below, below
Hey, ho, below, below
Stowing sugar in the hold below
Hey, ho, below, below
Stowing sugar in the hold below
The J.M. White, she's a new boat
Stem to stern she's mighty fine
Beat any boat on the New Orleans line
Stowing sugar in the hold below
The engineer shouts through his trumpet
"Tell the mate we got bad news.
Can't get steam for the fire in the flue"
Stowing sugar in the hold below
The captain's on the quarter deck
Scratchin' 'way at his old neck
And he cries out, "Heave the larboard lead"
Stowing sugar in the hold below
Thank you, your a good person
OMG! There is a new update in Warframe and the main theme of it is a SPACE variation of Sugar in the Hold SHANTEY! Guys you need at list listen to it and better do a cover with your amazing voices 😍 This would be a hype bomb for sure!
Omg, Robbie's trumpet sounds from the last stream has invaded my brain. "The engineer shouts through his trumpet (toot-toot-toot!) 'Tell the mate we got bad news' (toot-toot-toot 🙁)"

Well I wish I was in Mobile bay

That shot from outdoors got me. Great work! :D
It made me laugh heartily when we were editing too :D
Me and the bois at 10pm, waiting for the DM to return with his Kraken Mini
Agreed, but I’m the dm and I hear the players bellowing from the other room
you guys have helped me with D&D so many times with sea shanties that i tweak to fit the world ive made. you guys helped make me confident enough to perform the songs in front of my friends whenever they sail from continent to continent. cheers guys and keep up the good work!
I'd stow sugar in the hold below if I could continue to hear these guys sing. Like always, they were superb !
Some top quality hard labour there! Many thanks for the kind words :)
I dunno, in the last whole year I've been addicted to Longest Johns.
Maybe I was a sailor in a past life? Cuz' a lot of those songs gimme chills.
Can you just pass me the sugar for my coffee ready!
Sorry, it's still in the hold
Best version out there.
I like this bluesy shanty it’s the perfect combination I would never think of
What an atmosphere y'all have made with this.
I mean, this video is just so ADEQUATE! :P
went back from from the cold below
Absolutely love this one from you all. Good song to sing when running a CNC in a wood shop. Liked the muffled effect from outside the table, nice touch. As always sounding great guys!
Thanks a lot Brendon! I can imagine this being a good song to work to in a wood shop. When we were editing, that shot did make me laugh audibly :)
Heard this one a while back on spotify. It's one of my favorites.
Thanks a lot mate, it's a great song and lots of fun to sing
@@thelongestjohns i can imagine! It's lots of fun to listen to as well! Oh and if you don't mind me making a suggestion, i'd love one of Soon May the Wellerman Come if you don't mind!
I often sing your shanties while doing chores, my parents yell at me "we are not at see you damn weirdo" in which I reply "its a damn tough life of toil and strife we whaler men undergo...."
Rose Campbell uncultured swine...
@@memeznfishing9916 oh.. may I ask why? I didn't expect such rudeness. .. so please, care to explain?
@@robertcampbell7997 I think he was making a funny about people not appreciating your shanties, sometimes jokes are hard to land through text lol
Carl Brown yep sorry. Probably should have used proper grammar. Oops. But yes, coming from an offshore fisherman it disgusts me that there are some people that don’t appreciate a good ole sea shanty
@@memeznfishing9916 ah I see your talking about my parents and there disrespect for the shanties, the stories of the sea, and the hardships that Calypso throws at sailing men.
Discovered this completely on random thanks to UA-cam recommendations. Absolutely love it.
This is excellent! I'm from Mobile Bay, and I never hear any sea shanties about it until now! My only complaint is that y'all've dressed in winter gear for a place that rarely gets below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Maybe its little cringe but i lissen these songs when im watching one piece sometimes .Do your best guys !!!Your awesome.
Thanks a lot mate! These songs work anywhere :)
This is a fitting song for Zeff to sing while cooking on the Baratie.
Hey JD! Take this comment to relax while you read each and every one of them use it like a little campfire if you will. Just wanted to say that I really enjoy your music and thank you for helping me discover a new genre of music which I quite enjoy. Much love from Turkey! Also, nice beanie.
Stowing sugar in the SHED!!! Great song & great video. Well done boys & well done Abbie for another great video. Good bit of beanie advertising too :):)
Don't break the illusion, it's clearly the hold of a ship
JD's look of fond exasperation at 0:48 is a mood. Also the whole video is amazing!
not first, but close.
sounding great as always, fellas.
Many thanks buddy, thanks for commenting
Woopwoop! I will ask my hubby of this song! Sometimes songs (especially of Louisiana) have lots of history meanings....and it perfect timing to hear you guys, we may live in CA, but hubby's family in NOLA, and its Mardi Gras time 💜💚💛! Cool song guys
Ay Louisiana doesnt get enough credit. Source: am from louisiana
Woah, JD. I just saw you looking at Andy's cards right at the beginning there!
So who won the most hands?
Definitely Dave... he was the dealer
@@thelongestjohns so... How many hands dose he have now?
@@thelongestjohns was it poker? If so what kind?
@@microsoftpowerpoint5817 last i saw, two. Be wierd if he had more
@@seandavis3226 It looks like Hold 'em
Okay, I have to say it, Andy wearing that big ol' coat is the most adorable thing I've ever seen.
I have missed this music since the 80's. Ex blue water, and for a while brown, water sailor. We never sang about that duty. All i tried to do is forget it.
I work on a test field for pumps. We work on wooden planks with a water reservoir underneath. When the pump's pressure goes back into the water it creates waves that sometimes jump up between open planks. It almost feels like I am on sea. I usually start singing some shanties while working and it feels amazing. Sadly none of my coworker like to sing or know any shanties. They just look at me weirdly, haha.
Now, quick story. I can never really watch your live streams because it's on Wednesday nights and Wednesday night is game night. But tonight, my party is on a boat in the middle of a storm and this is a good enough excuse to play your songs in the background!
I can listen you 24/7. Love you all ❤ Three weeks more and we'll see you in Krakow 🎶😊🎵
Can't wait for it! Lots of love
Oh this is a good one, another one on the list of songs I'm going to buy as soon as they're available!
Awwww, thanks a lot mate! We do actually have a studio version on our album Between Wind and Water
@@thelongestjohns Oh boy, you can probably guess what's next then :)
I think I appreciate that they were using my favorite deck while doing this video more than the singing XD
Wish you could record "soon may the wellerman come" with that kind of microphones guys as in your Sea Of Thieves video ! I'm kinda obsessed with the song since i discovered you with this one ! :p
They have a great rendition of Wellerman on Spotify!
I hope you release the behind the scenes of this. it look like you people really had fun doing this
Another great song there's no end to the good tunes with you guys!
Wow... Great singing!
I found several version of this shanty before listening to this one. Shanties shouldn't be sung with guitar accompaniment ! Best version I found and good to see you after many years since seeing you in Thornbury Library. Well done!
Almost EVERY single song of yours is in my playlist!
Beautiful song. Nicely done.
7 months later and I'm still coming back to this song.
i love it. i can't help singing along.
What an interesting anachronism to use Larboard and a steam ship, given that Larboard was faded out before steam really took off, unless it survived on Scandinavian ships for longer than in the English fleets.
Yall are amazing. All your videos I cant help but at learn to sing the chorus. They remind me of marching cadences in the army. Keep at it yall!
You guys have done many, many shanties over the years, I know. But this one will always be my favorite!
Thanks for this video, guys!
1:37 hah lol that's quite good! Imagine being outside! Being me, I'd have knocked when they were done to join in lol
Incredible song!
Another amazing song, you guys should seriously have more subscribers!
I love these songs, I always sing them at work. Keep up the great work!!!
JD's expressions, as always, are just precious.
Grand one, lads! And glad you posted it. Have heard the song numerous times at pirate reenacting, but never knew the name. Cheers!
Ever since i found you guys years again from AC4 Sea Shanties I've loved your guys work ever since! Now i found your spotify playlist Between Wind and Sea and can't stop thank you for making some of the best study music I've had the pleasure of listening too. :)
That's wonderful to hear, thanks so much Josias! Hope you'll enjoy the new album coming this year too :)
You guys rock, loved it.
one of my favorites of you guys :) nice idea to film it in a small cabin... must have been quite like that on one of them sugar boats :D
amazing song, well done to you all
Diving into your back catalog and you all rock!
Im so glad you guys did this song. I love this so much!
Thanks a lot mate! It's been a band favourite for quite a while too
@@thelongestjohns is there anywhere I can get sheet music for this arrangement?
Nice, boys! I saw the version of this song by Fisherman’s Friends, it’s got quite a different interpretation
Amazing stuff guys!!
Amazing job I always love the way you guys sing
Cool tune. Like the way you guys filmed it
Honestly, you guys sound better with every song you publish. Great work!
You're killing it guys keep up the good work
Love this!
1:35 idk what that was but it was great
It's behind the scenes of the "hold" of our "ship"
Just found you guys and I absolutely love your music! Keep it up!
Me and my friend Chris love shanties. You by far are the best I've heard. Keep making great music!!
So cool I love it
Both the song and video are amazing! Great job lads can't wait to here more!

This is an excellent music video, I love everything about it! The music was on point as always, but the shed and vibe of the video matched it perfectly.
Catchy tune! Wonderful as always!
Also 1:37 got a chuckle out of me
Was that a mention of Mobile Bay?
Damn the torpedoes, and full speed ahead with your amazing work, guys!
Yup it was
Wife is a foreign speaker who couldnt hear the soft 'd' in hold, paused the video and asked me.
"Why are they storing sugar in a hole?
What hole are they storing it in exactly...?"
>. >
"Hold."
"What?"
"Hold." Points to title.
i love all the songs y'all put out, makes me want to go sailing someday.
i'd love to see a video of The Longest Johns on how you guys research these old songs
Now I wanna know what you used as replacement for the boat, it sounds and feels legit, also did the location help for audio recording? Great vid guys
The shot from outside gives it away somewhat. We did record it live on site, so it definitely helps give it that authentic "wood" feeling
EDIT shit I'm wrong. -Ah well I think they record the audio in a studio because of the better acoustics and sync it with them singing it on location, a great example of this is their video of "rufford park poachers" - they filmed it at 2x speed for the cool effect, but I can only imagine how hard that must have been to sign at twice the speed!-
The actual acting in this video is fantastic.
I don't know if you noticed but there is/was a huge spider behind JD. :D
Timestamp please
I'm appreciating the camerawork :) (the music is adequate too I suppose)
the 1 dislike was John Paul Jones (he's a pirate)
No loyalty does he poses
I love this
