There once was a ship that put to sea,
And the name of that ship was the Billy o' Tea
The winds blew hard, her bow dipped down,
Blow, me bully boys, blow!
Chorus (after each verse):
(HUH!)
Soon may the Wellerman come
to bring us sugar and tea and rum.
One day, when the tonguing' is done,
We'll take our leave and go.
She had not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore.
The captain called all hands and swore
He'd take that whale in tow.
{Chorus}
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale's tail came up and caught her.
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her,
When she dived down below.
{Chorus}
No line was cut, no whale was freed,
An' the captain's mind was not on greed!
But he belonged to the Whaleman's creed
She took that ship in tow
{Chorus}
For forty days or even more,
the line went slack then tight once more,
All boats were lost, there were only four
and still that whale did go.
{Chorus}
As far as I've heard, the fight's still on,
The line's not cut, and the whale's not gone!
The Wellerman makes his regular call
to encourage the captain, crew and all!
{Chorus x2 til Finish}

Communication and collaboration between a massive group of people
Absolutely
I like how there's not just people singing. I seen people dancing. I seen puppets, VR avatars, even a lizard and octopus. I seen deaf people, a mermaid, amputees. Such a awesome video filled with awesome people.
thats why i like the inclusivity of piracy
You could have a majorly awesome game if I spy with this video
Edit: I found the lizard, octopus, mermaid, and the puppets
@Only For Fun im pretty sure one of them was singing in sign language.
@Only For Fun Don't both mute and deaf people use sign language? Because deaf people can't hear what they are saying so they would have no idea if they are speaking in an understandable way, and mute people would have no other way to communicate
@Only For Fun That makes sense, but I always thought that deaf people were better with their other senses, and they would know the beat from how it feels? Though that sounds hard and it does make more sense that they are mute instead
Can we take some time to give a huge shout out to the editor, 6000 videos isn’t easy

Yup I wish I had a voice that deep to be honest
It's a simple matter of mixing their audio higher, or the other singers lower. Not that hard beyond the amount of audio channels in use. I suspect they group several singers into blocks to make the task easier.

Imagine if 7 billion voices could sing this. Hey, music is the great uniter.
The person singing it in sign language was so wholesome!
The fact that you let a person join in singing in sign language just made my day. Disability representation is so important, and people with disabilities get often excluded from things like this, not because we can't join and do the thing, but because able-bodied people think we can't do the thing and write us off before even giving it a thought. So thank you for including everyone!
There are actually several people using sign language in this video, but I do agree that it’s lovely to see disability representation
They actually added every single submission! If you go watch their old one, the one on "leave her Johnny" then you'll see 5 or so people highlighted doing sign language!

Hello Avery
fun fact: ships at the time were extremly crowded so this is what songs sounded like. :)
Assuming it is mostly skiffs, how many ships would 6000 people need to be on
interestingly - this is a tonguing song, so it’d actually be sung on shore. They used the rhythm of songs like these to keep in time with each other.
To be fair, it wasn't all ships, it depends on what type of ship your talking about, if it was a whaling ship with ores, than yeah, it would have been massively crowded, but not all were like that, not to mention, navy and pirate vessels weren't as crowded as you'd think, they had a lot of people yes, but there was also a lot of space

The fact that this song has united so many people during a time of crisis is truly awe-inspiring. I love it. Nuff said.
i have a feeling that this grass root resurgence of sea shanties is part of a bigger theme. I feel like the passion for exploration is being fueled again. We have Elon Musk trying to colonize mars and Bezos trying to build commercial space travel. Another theme that can emerge from this is the urge to engage in sea ferrying employment. This would certainly help economies and lower unemployment in a crucial field that goes over looked. We could even see ocean living on a boat become a thing due to rising costs of living in a home! just some thoughts, the come back of sea shanties is fascinating!

It's almost like a glimpse at world peace.
Let's all hope!
To a future of peace, acceptance and love! *clinks beer cup*
this is what the sea is all about all of us it just calls us no one is left back
One day
This is... amazing....
i have no other words to describe it
There is something indescribable about hearing many different voices sing in tandem. Nothing on this or any planet like it.
When this comes out, I'm gonna blast it all over my neighborhood
Your neighbor: *yo* *turn* *that* *shit* *up*
Me if I was the neighbor: *Singing along*
The first 10 seconds was good. Then after the “Hugh”, the chorus came, hit me like a massive wave on a ship and the tears started coming. I’ve never cried like the way I just did for a song. Beautiful guys. Beautiful!
Imagine if the entirety of humanity sang this song together.
POV: you're a redcoat and suddenly hear this absolute monster roll over the waves to see an entire fleet of Man'O'Wars flying different variations of pirate flags
@Joshua Skaug "A death worth dying..."
Alas...
*immediately switches sides*
and then the one boat with the ahegao pirate flag

I will *never* get tired of watching this. 6,500 coming together to sing as one is immensely beautiful.
This legitimately made me cry. Just, the sheer unbridled *humanity* of it, of over 6,000 people reaching out to sing together when times are so dark.
A thousand people having fun together. This is beautiful.
6500*
@@PuffleFuzz 6500 people having fun together. This is beautiful.
To the Longest Johns, the community members that submitted clips for this, and MAJOR PROPS to the editing team. You guys have created powerful magic, there's no other words for it. 6,500 people all working in the same artistic project is.. I can't really put it into the words and all I did was listen and view this. AMAZING WORK ALL OF YOU. Raise a glass me hearties!
That was the greatest thing I've heard in AGES. THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!
I found myself at 1:17, on the right side in the sailor's cap! :D I had put on my grandpa's French navy outfit for the occasion x) This is so amazing, I'm so glad I was able to participate! A lot of love to everyone in the video - and to the editors! They deserve all the sugar & tea & rum
:)
Aye, shipmate! They'll get the first pick of the booty.
This is the first community project I participated in, and holy wah, the response you guys got for the project was astronomical! Kudos to those who roped this protect together, and major kudos to the editors who helped it sail!
Definitely will be joining again for another community project!
0:17 This dude is a nerd I can appreciate. Bottom left corner. He’s dressed as the Judge from Ace Attorney.
I lost it at this comment.
I love it.
Good eye, sailor! We need a man like you in the crowsnest!
my ace attorney bois where ye at?

This is what I liked about humanity..Honoring the one who sang and created the song
I loved all the costumes, dances, and skits people had going on in their recordings! So many talented people having fun with the song, it's hard to believe! The homemade Muppets in particular got a laugh out of me XD This was awesome, thank you so much for hosting it, TLJ!
Fantastic work by the editing crew, this must have been a project of truly unspeakable proportions! I fully believe you went through pretty much every submission, because even my low-quality nervous garage recording was in there (which I genuinely gasped when I saw, almost definitely made my day or even week). Wellermania Week has been a darn good one, thanks for everything that went into making it!
My mom came in and asked “what are you doing?” and so i gave her my headphones. Needless to say,She started swaying back and forth happily. This really is great!
Male or female; young or old; we all agree on one thing: *Sea Shanties.*
@@Memer9456 YES!
I am left with shivers down my spine! One of my favorite things in the world is hundreds of thousands of people singing together in unison. The voices of many come together to create one familiar voice that everyone knows.
I love this comment. Can I just take that last sentence and carry it with me everywhere, please?
@@duetopersonalreasonsaaaaaa Oh my goodness thank you! I feel very flattered! Yes! Of course!
I didnt know how to word it right at the time and maybe I still dont, but something like, the way hundreds of people sing merges into one voice, a voice that cant be imitated by one alone. And even though it can be hundreds of people you could never see again, you would still hear that same voice again when people come together to unite their voices!
It really shivers ye' timbers! 😁
A Wellerman refers to supply ships owned by the Weller Brothers who owned a whaling station in Otago, New Zealand, among the most profitable blokes in NZ at the time. :D
Lads, it makes me so happy to see all thousands of us sing together - thanks so much for this. And kudos to the editors -fantastic job!
you guys 🙌🏼♥︎ absolutely INCREDIBLE WHAT THE HELLLLLLL xx
Thanks :) It was fun
@@thelongestjohns meanwhile up in heaven with the real billy o'tea crew: MATEY! COME QUICK! THE WORLD IS A'SINGIN YER SONG!
It was such an honor to be a part of this. I finally found myself in the sea of people after 5 watches and I couldn't be happier. Thank you Johns for this it means so much to be a part of this.
Great to have you and thanks for taking part :)
5? 5!!! Lucky sod
If this isn’t the greatest musical collab on UA-cam, I don’t know what is ... The power of all those voices being united just blows you away and makes you want to join the shanty
I've said it before and I'll say it again: This is absolutely epic! That first "Huh!" by 6500 voices *shivers* And some of the harmonies are incredible! Thank you so much for including the tenor, baritone and bass harmonies for those of us who weren't comfortable singing the melody part, it made all the difference! I can't wait for the next one!!
I even managed to spot myself. I'm the redhead on the "to encourage the captain, crew and all" part :D And, after about 100 views, I FINALLY spotted the thumbnail among all contributors as well :)
To the editor: You are amazing, over 6000 individual videos and voices in one, just absolutely amazing 👏
To the boys: Thank you all so much for letting us be part of a project like this! It was beautiful! ❤
In time I was contributing to this, my dad passed away...I am grateful that I can remember him through this piece of art...
I'm sorry for your loss and may he rest peacefully wherever he may be.
I'm glad you have something like this to look back on. :)
@@M_ldyCheese Thank you, I really appreciate it
This wonderful work of art is an example of what humanity can achieve when we work together.

Don't forget the furry a few seconds in, as well as the trans individuals here and there showing their pride!
what's the timestamp for the vocaloid
I am so happy I could be in it this time! I only wish I would have dropped the last note down lower lol. Can't wait!
How do you get to be apart of the community videos
@@BigDavo75 When they start a new one, there will be a video explaining it. Basically record yourself and submit it.
@@BigDavo75 Just like @A Person says. But sign up to the mailing list too if you don’t want to miss it and be the first to know when it’s happening
I know that you guys already have the next one planned out, but imagine a community project of this scale for We All Lift Together. Thousands of voices all lifted like that...
It was a delight to toss my own voice into this, and you can bet I'll be doing it again!
I love it very, very much there are people who do sign language. I don't need it, but I know people who do, and this is just great to see!
