Panasonic S1 & S1R In Depth Review | The BIGGEST camera release of 2019 to date
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лип 2024
- We have been excited about this release since its announcement at Photokina last year. We finally have the Panasonic S1 and S1R for review. The Panasonic S1 houses a versatile 24MP sensor whereas the S1R built for more hardcore photography houses a 47MP sensor. We took out both cameras to see what Panasonics first full frame mirrorless cameras are all about.

Love the videos man 🙌🏻 really helpful for me because I’m in the market for a new camera
Really professional review and bringing up some important points 💯🙌
I like how the back of his shirt shouts "fujiflim" lol
Are the Panasonic S1 and S1R the best cameras of 2019?
FEATURE CORRECTION: DUAL IS 2 grants 6 stops of stabilisation

Cameras these days are too good, not sure it even matters which one we shoot with now
We are spoilt,and want more.
stupid...
that i agree with,so it's ONLY about what we want personally
Not true at all!
Great review. Can you tell me the max exposure range on bracketed shots? I cannot find it anywhere. It is one stop on the GH5.
I just want to make sure I heard you correctly? S1 is full read out with S1R is cropped correct?
Do think better than sony a7mark3 in photography? . Thanks like your video
Thanks for great review :) Would playing kids photography be considered as high speed action? I'm planing to upgrade my gear and thinking to but this camera or D850. I mainly photograph landscapes and kinds, sometimes in "action" :) What you think ?
Hi there, nice review, thanks! How did you find the lenses you used (looks like the 24-105mm f/4 and the 50mm f/1.4) were they sharp enough to support the 47MP sensor and resolution? Many thanks.
They claim that the 50mm is especially sharp. The 50mmand the 70-200mm are 'Certified by LEICA'. Here are the other 60 lenses out 2019-2020: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4374914#forum-post-62430946
Hi guys!Does s1Have a posibility To make photoes while shooting video ? Thanks.
On my sony a7s when i shoot using phone as a remote -camerais ignoring silent mode .and start shooting with shutter release.Fuji doesnt have such issue. What about Panasonic s1.Thanks.
Excellent Camera
Thanks for doing this. What camera was used for filming you when both Panasonic cameras were in the shot?
Panasonic S1R! We had 2 S1Rs and 1 S1
@@GeorgesCamerasTV Thanks for your reply!😊
Since S1R can shoot 6k I would like to ask: if I shoot video /picture without zooming with 6k and crop later, is the quality same as those non-6k shoot with zoom in 100mm or 200mm?
Good reviews thank you... Being a Sony shooter, I'm worried I didn't seem to see any custom function button on the bodies?
Serag I think you can customize literally any button on this camera, according to other vids
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you only get an extra half stop if image stabilization with compatible lenses. Not +2.
Hey Ryett! In fact we are both wrong. It only adds 1 extra stop so you get a total of 6. The S1 system is a bit more sophisticated. Adding the feature correction now. Thanks for point that out!
Is there a crop when shooting 180fps?
What laviler do you use ?
Back-button focus: is there a way to program? Thanks!
Yes
Looks like something I want to try and use, then i can make a choice..
If hybrid shooting at all then S1 for sure. I need the unlimited record time. This is about as close as your getting to perfection. The G9 was (and still is) such a beast. Seriously considering selling off my Fuji and Sony gear. I'll keep the G9. Not sure which APS-C body and lenses to keep.
Rolling shuttle?
Just a quick correction. "Native' ISO is different from the ISO range. There is usually only one native ISO on a camera where noise is also generally cleanest. Though some of the Panasonic cameras (not sure about these) have 2 native ISO.
Hey mate! Yes youre correct. What we meant was the native iso range without extension :)
@@GeorgesCamerasTV I don't think we are on the same page. The vast majority of cameras only have 1 native ISO. It's only recently that cameras have even begun to have 2 native ISO. GH5s & Eva1 were getting tons of press for the 800 & 3200 native iso. Everything else above and below is "extended" or software driven. The ISO range is different from the native ISO. Panasonic has yet to even release the native ISO officially as far as I am aware and I haven't seen any tests proving what it would most likely be the native ISO.
@@Skapo Mmmm, I agree with you but I've also been told otherwise. I understand that the Native ISO is indeed 1 number, which is important to know so you don't "extend the limit". Very important for doing astro and other things. But I've been told by reps who I've dealt with that it is indeed called a "native ISO range". I 100% agree with you though.
@@GeorgesCamerasTV Word. Haha Yeah sometimes there is lots of conflicting info around this stuff. Either way rad video. Stoked to mess around with these cameras at some point!
If you don't want one of the cameras just give me a call ahahah! Love your videos! :D
doesnt replace gh5s for me
What about low light performance
I’m a TV news photographer and doc Dp and wildlife Photog and have been shooting with Canon and on the vericam platform for years. I’ve invested in many b4 mount cameras and lenses $$$$$! But now at 60 I’m ready for upgrades on my video and still cameras but don’t want to buy a pro Cine camera and from now on will rent but sill want a camera that I can shoot Cine when I travel or on lower budget projects. I think the s1 will fill both. I have a nice selection of EOS lenses both Cine and still. Tokena, Canon and Sigma.
I would like to see you test a sigma with their eos to L adaptor and try a few other lens brands to see if and how well and how many functions work on the Panasonic.
In the video world Sony,Panasonic, JVC and others came together with the common B4 mount and it’s been a good thing. I love being able to switch between manufacturers cameras but still have my favorite lenses so it’s absolutely time the still cameras finely follow...
Price to s1?
wait it crops at 4k60fps?
yes to aps-c
Amazing DfD...
*Will Panasonic make one camera that works both Panasonic S1 & S1R for shooting photos and videos?*
As the owner of four Panasonic m43a cameras (GH4, GH5, GX7, GX8), I was waiting for these, but the price was announced and the lack of lenses at launch put me off. I went out and bought a Sony A7 III... I am a Panasonic fan, but they really didn't take their existing customer base with them on the journey
simianinc not disagreeing with you, but wondering why you think the lens selection isn’t enough? I think this is pretty much best case scenario anyone could have expected with a new camera format (3 lumix lenses, 4 more announced for this year, and 11 sigma announced for this year, and however many Leica have).
Even with Sony you still needed to buy into a new system right? Just curious to know what swayed you?
You went to the dark side. U have faltered my friend. The S line is amazing. Good luck with sonys durability
15 stops of dynamic range with paid VLog option? I don't know, I seriously doubt this.
Thats what they claim! We'll see when it comes out. Keen for that 10 bit colour depth 👌👌
great Panasonic review with a fujifilm shirt!! lol
Monsieur, is it true that this is the best way to carry the camera?: ua-cam.com/video/LR0jQJIpEBQ/v-deo.html
@@fellowcitizenLOl i don't recommand you to carrying you S1 like this!! I did the same demo (but smoothest) Just to show how the body is solid!!
;) lol
Will Panasonic be including free weight training courses?
i doubt it because my camera weighs more than the Panasonic,so we just have to man up..
I find it strange the camera manufacturers seems to be always 90% there, but hold off to make the perfect camera. The S1 could easily cover 6K res in video with the 24MP sensor (The GH5) can do it. Also why does it only shoot 8 bit 4:2:2 or 10 bit 4:2:0. Since GH5 and GH5S can shoot 10 bit 4:2:2 internal at 400 mg/sec. The S1R with 47MP could easily then do 8K. This would slaughter everything before it if it went the rest of the distance.
I hope you two are making videos as your own channel and not hired by a camera store. In the long run you may end up like Kai and Lok from their old days with digital rev.
Why, because they're 2 Asians? There was way too much talking and barely any solid testing and example images. So all you get is opinion and no way to form your own opinion (because you haven't seen anything). Also, no charisma or sense of humour like Kai. No interaction between the 2 guys either, like Kai and Lok.
I'm a film maker and looking for a camera to make Short films and slow motion videos! Confused between Sony A7 3 , Canon Eos R and Lumix S1 ?? Which should I go for??
Panasonic has an excellent reputation among filmmakers due to their GH-series (and EVA-series for bigger budgets), and the S1 has some large advantages over the Canon and Sony options you mention. The S1 can record 4K30 at full-frame and for unlimited time, whereas the Canon has a x1.7 crop factor and the Sony has an x1.2 crop factor (I think the Sony can do the slower 4K24 at full-frame with a 30min time limit.) The S1 can also record 4K60 at x1.5 crop factor (the S1R can do so at near full-frame of x1.09) which no other full-frame camera can do (Panasonic's G9 and GH5 can do it, as can the X-T3, but they're not full-frame.)
There are many other factors, and the X-T3 or G9 are very capable cheaper cameras for filming, but the S1 has unique features and beenfits from Panasonic's specialisation in this area with the GH-series. There will be an S1-EVA in a year or so which will specialise in video, and have very high-end features, yet that will be very expensive. The S1 is extremely good value, as it costs only a small amount more than other full-frames, yet has true weather-sealing, 5.7m EVF and full access to Sigma ART as native lenses (with DFD etc) as well as Sigma's EF lenses via the MC-21.

Go for S1
@@fellowcitizen I've been waiting for S1 only but i just started thinking because all the reviews and videos say the Auto focus is not good and it is very important factor for a Video maker. So just that is making me think. what do you say?
If it has pdaf, it will be perfect.
Would you recommend the S1 over the GH5?
If you dont mind the size or money cost, 100%
The GH5 does have a few specialised features which the S1 doesn't have, though - like waveforms and 400mbps (they'll likely be in the ~2020 videocentric S1-EVA.)
It's possible that 400mbps may come in an update when the XQD slot upgrades to CFexpress.
So the S1 is the primary video camera, yet you chose to film almost the entire thing on the S1R??? Also, it would be really important for us to see how good (or bad) the caf actually works in video. How did you not include that in the review?
Hey mate! Just to clarify a couple things.
We filmed the majority of the video on the S1R as we were given two S1Rs and 1 S1. We did incorporate footage from both in this video though :)
The whole video was shot on continuous AF with facial tracking.
@@GeorgesCamerasTV Did you see an impact from pixel binning on THE S1R review?
Those cameras are huge. I would probably have to trade my sedan in for a truck just to carry it with me.
Ever seen a 1DX Mark II? This is a baby compared to that!
I think unless you need 4K 60 or the super rugged body there are better alternatives which are cheaper, lighter and smaller (Sony A7/9 and Nikon Z)
35mm full frame Sony is my choice
Clearly a Panasonic fanboy! Not a bad thing, but everyone else that has reviewed this camera has stated that the AF is a little underwhelming for the price of this camera. They all admit that Canon's and Sony's AF are much faster and reliable and hunt less than Panasonic. I will admit it is probably better than the GH5's AF. For a video guy like me who stays away from AF and mainly does MF cause I hate the look of a camera vigorously hunting for focus and like the slow focus pull done manually. I am still looking to buy this camera cause I love the IBIS and color accuracy these cameras provide! I just feel like this is a fanboy review without any comparisons with other products like the Nikon Z6 and Canon EOSR which are the other cameras this camera is competing with. Make sure to watch some other reviews other than this one to be well educated.
I'll be honest with you if anything I'm a big Nikon fanboy. Will always love F mount hehe.
The AF is great for stills as I mentioned. However AF C in video it still suffers back focusing issues as Josh pointed out.
Thanks for the feedback though! We will look to do more comparisons in the future
Whats going on at 14:13???? That man that stands up and grabs that girl? It doesnt look like they know each other...
Personally think the price tag is a bit too high, especially the native glass. The body plus the 50mm f1.4 are just $700 shy of a canon 1dx mark II....that is insane. I wont deny that its a great camera but it's too overpriced in my opinion.
This dude is literally the photographer Ricegum look at all the hype shit damn
Praises camera's auto focus as said camera auto focus hunts for focus 😂😂😂 9:09
Yes as mentioned it hunts in AF-C for video. For photos its fantastic 👌
Do Chinese people get to review new cameras first because the cameras are made somewhere in Asia? I've wondered always..
Not sure what you mean by that Jan. We're from Australia
Chinese people also get to taste the latest Chinese food before anyone else! :-)
I love how they keep slapping the camera. Good luck getting loaners for review in the future.
Hehehe, pretty sure they will be just fine. :D
If the slight slaps hurt the camera then Panasonic is in some serious trouble
More time should have been spent on addressing the continuous auto focus hunting. When one of you was sitting by the park, I could see the branches going in and out of focus all the time it was very distracting. Sadly, this camera will not work for filmmakers that require continuous autofocus.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed. The hunting was quite evident. Looks much better than the GH series cameras but still not quite there yet.
are those working temps accurate? -10 to 40 degrees? that limits the camera to only work in like 30% of the world's geography lol
??? The temp range is large enough to be used almost anywhere in the world. It is in Celsius
Very conservative claims. These are as tough as you could expect electronic cameras to be: ua-cam.com/video/LR0jQJIpEBQ/v-deo.html
@@afterlife4428 They don't speak to the 24-105 mm lens if it is weather sealed and temp tolerances either.
Baju Fujifilm kamera Lumix hadeuh
top dollar, no thanks
Lumix s1r its good .but this is to much in Pakistan
i purchased this as a amateur have a really hard time finding lens offers
i Think The Sony a7s iii Will Be Better For Video
What do you know about the A7Siii?
10:12 "I'll go with Sony, thanks" :)
plzz giveaway ,,, love from india
more like the SADDEST lol
I'm sorry guys, but what the heck reason to make review of camera where one of main feature is 4k and 4k@60fps with video 1080p??? Why not shot professional's camera review on cheap smartphone, with even less photo samples.. C'mon
Terrible review; I can find the specs on my own.
poo
video not in 4k.... looks horrible on my monitor
For this price I take A7iii any day.
Pictures are crap on your video
