Guys, GREAT addition to the first batch of videos. Well done! I ran out of gas before I could cover this. So glad you did. Really shows Panasonic’s emphasis on what practitioners really want/need.

Really? To me it shows that the direction of "photography" is toward "camera operators" who use AI to do everything for them. $10 says I can take pictures equal to any "working professional" with this thing. I find that the more they come out with these kinds of overpriced, feature heavy digital point-and-shoot cameras, the more film I shoot. [End of cranky rant.]

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP 5 років тому +9

Matthew Wells AI can’t show up at the right place at the right time. AI can’t make a shy person open up and beam in front of your camera. AI can’t experience the joy that comes from that kind of interaction and learning. But that’s just my $0.02. :)

@@3BMEP That's what the "camera operator" is there for, to take R2D2 back and forth from the shoot and work with the humans.

      " what practitioners really want/need"
      -Good codecs (missing)
      -full sensor 4k60 (missing)
      -vlog (locked behind paywall)
-unlimited record (missing in the most important mode, for seemingly no reason)
      -waveform (missing)
      -flip-forward screen (missing)
      -PDAF for video (missing)
-built in electronic ND, or even just a wheel of filters (missing)
      -raw out
I'm not asking for anything revolutionary, just parity with the XT-3, and something better than the BMPCC4k, Z6, Gh5s, fs5, ls300.
If it weren't for BS segmentation we'd have a few feature-complete cameras to choose from.
The EVF, XLR option, and a few lenses with MF clutch are nice, I guess.

The DP Review Camera death match! where each reviewer from Camera Store and double Penetrate Review take up their relative cameras and have a just a complete animalisitc pit fight. Only allowed to use the Camera and their choice of two lenses a prime, and a zoom. Then they have to beat the relative shit out of eachother, and fight to the death only using thier cunning and camera/lens. The last man(or woman) standing is proclammed the winner along with their camera stystem. The last functioning camera also get's a special runner up, DP silver if you will. Just a complete fucking Camera blood sport. The finally, we would have one, and only one camera system that could justify that price.

You just clarified something I wanted to know.... there's no waveform monitor on these. I therefore think a speedboosted GH5 is a better option for video shooters.
Panasonic dropped the waveform from the G9, and since they're saying the s1 and s1r are primarily stills cameras I suspect it won't be coming back in a firmware update on these.... just like it never appeared on the G9.
P.S. I wonder if Panasonic will be generous enough to give us that linear focus option with fly-by-wire lenses on the GH series.
Great video as always. Thanks guys.

Wait, why is no one criticizing the AF? I am not asking this as a troll, but contrast AF has been the achilles heel for Panasonic on their M43 cameras, and they've been dragged through the dirt on it.
Has contrast AF alongside computational algorithms finally come together to form a AF system that rivals PDAF?

@7:06 Yeah that's about what we expected. Eye AF works ok, not great, but what's worse is the contrast AF back and forth hunting which is really noticeable in the bokeh circles in the background. Oh my god! Feature 1 is one that I have been asking for in cameras for a while now. Exactly for that reason. If you know where you are shaking to, you can correct it. It's much easier to hold a video relatively stable than a photo, because you get instant feedback. Holding long exposures for several seconds should be possible now, as you can compensate for drift!

  • @TaraTanaka
    @TaraTanaka 5 років тому

Excellent info! I can’t wait to see what the S1R will produce with my old Nikon f2.8 primes. In watching the demo of the camera shake indicator, it looks like you have to hold down the button to use it - is that correct? I shoot with long lenses from a tripod, and having to keep the button pushed in would introduce shake and keep me from being able to measure what kind of shake is coming from the wind - it would be nice to have a more objective measure of what a mic or a lens hood is adding. No vector scope?? I hope that comes with a firmware update. Are the cards hot swappable? Thanks again for a no-nonsense, information-packed video!

Thanks for your great videos! One question: I like Panasonic cameras for video. I own the G85 and G9. I am considering buying the GH5, but also stop and think about the S1. The price had dropped! But recently saw that used S1R's prices are close to the S1's. What would be your recommendations? I would use it mostly for video, but the 40 plus megapixels for photos won't hurt! It attracted me the idea of having a 47 megapixels camera with all the video capabilities of the S1. Is unlimited time recording the only difference? Thanks again!

What bugs me is panasonic said this camera could do 4k full frame at 60, but now it has a super 35 crop at 60 frames for 4K. The auto focus still isn't better, the saving grace for the GH5 was the flip out screen, but the geniuses in Panasonic boardroom thought it was a great idea to remove it to make it look "pro." The Minolta Dynax/Maxxum 7D and 5D (the very first system cameras with IBIS) also had a shake indicator in the viewfinder, which was useful for checking how steady you were holding the camera. In comparison it was a linear five step scale (to the right in the optical viewfinder), so obviously Panasonics solution is quite a bit more useful and precise. Panasonic entered the FF market with a big hit to all the other manufacturers I guess...as expected. Their M43 are superior in ergonomics / handling and technical features. Just the image quality was holding them back. When the sensor is delivering on the quality level of Sony I think we got a clear winner for the FF market.

Would love to see a low light comparison to the Sony cameras

Wow, Panasonic really hit it out of the park with this one! It seems they took everything people love about their Lumix cameras, put it in Full Frame, then tossed in all kinds of amazing features like the autofocus abilities, super high-res EVF, super-resolution mode, a really good bottom grip add-on, tilty-screen, etc etc. Both cameras are amazing and its making me consider jumping from Sony... Uh-oh!!

The 11th most impressive thing as the absolute lack of lenses for these cameras. Works for both stills and video.

Could you check if these cameras include profiles for m mount lenses? Mind you, you will end up losing eye detection!

Are you sure it's VLog-L? Andrew Reid said it might be the full VLog (non-L).
    Thanks!

For a while, I thought they would have a competent camera but not good enough to be compelling, but seems like hinted at here with few weaknesses, some nice features and handling Panasonic have done just enough to be compelling.

Night and day, the difference between your reviews and Tony Northrup’s. You highlight the many innovations of this new camera system, while Northrup murders it and goes off in his nasty flip-flops to bury it in a shallow grave. Albeit that he’s not even held it in his hands and it hasn’t even been released yet. Seems he’s set the Sony mirrorless specs up as the Gold standard and if a camera conforms, it gets a good review, if not, he takes a verbal Louisville Slugger to it and ball-bats it to “Smitherines.”

These cameras look impressive. But what about that twisty screen? That is the only odd thing I have seen so far. How is it to use that?

Is there a reason why they downgraded from a fully articulating display in the G and GH series to what this has?
