      Yes Yes Yes. Even though Sony cameras have great specs and are very reliable, I just don't enjoy shooting with them. I love the Panny because all the buttons I need are available and the grip is way better. The viewfinder is outstanding something that is less than ideal on the Sony.

      @@dv78213 I think that it would depend on the kind of video you're shooting. I prefer manual focus for video anyway. I think all this craziness about auto focus verges on insanity. If you're shooting fast action sports I get it or if you do reportage, you can't afford to lose a shot.

    I’ve nicknamed my Panasonic S1 “Beast” as it’s one of the most rugged cameras I’ve owned! Got it from B&H and even though my first camera had problems both B&H and Panasonic took very good care of me. Thanks for the great review, love your channel!

    FYI: You can turn on "constant preview" in the S1's settings and you won't have to press a button to see your actual exposure/aperture. I also recommend the 120hz refresh rate in the EVF for those used to optical viewfinders.

    I have watched at least a dozen Slated Lens videos and have really enjoyed them. I do like the way you guys try to be impartial and just describe what they see from the results they get. I was wondering If you have all these same cameras on had for each comparison or do you rent or borrow these cameras temporarily for each video? Do you think there can be a noticeable difference between different examples of the same model camera? From personal experience I know optics can vary in the same model with binoculars and telescopes. Have you noticed variation in lenses you use?
    I am biased toward the A7III because I own one but it would okay if I had the Panasonic instead.

  • @bobhanuman65

    I love my S1. I have sold everything off except the S1 and a Z6 and 3 lenses. I filmed a theater performance in extreme low light with no external recorder and the 70-200 lens. The footage was brilliant. It will only get better. If you use large 2.8 zooms the size difference is negligible and in fact I feel it is better to have a bigger body.

    • @keithgoreham1463
      @keithgoreham1463 5 років тому

      The #1 complaint that I hear when I'm amongst Sony shooters is how front-heavy the camera is when a lens is attached. Their #1 positive comment when holding a D850 has been how balanced it feels in the hand. The S1, while significantly heavier than a D850, has that same balance to it.

    • @bobhanuman65
      @bobhanuman65 5 років тому

      @@keithgoreham1463 The S1 is 100 grams heavier. But with a big zoom on it it feels perfectly balanced. I have never understood the obsession with small bodies when if you put a big lens on it, it feels front heavy and unbalanced.

    Great review as always! One thing you did not mention is the huge cost difference. The S1 and 50mm lens is $4,800, the Sony and 50mm lens is $3,400, or $1,400 less!! This makes the choice easy, as the differences are very small between the 2 setups.

    • @keithgoreham1463
      @keithgoreham1463 5 років тому +1

      For that extra $1400 you're getting: A 120hz EVF that rivals optical viewfinders in clarity and responsiveness, a larger more tilt-able rear display, an essentially unlimited shooting buffer that doesn't stop you from shooting as it clears, no overheating, far better ergonomics, far better lens-body weight balance, far better build quality, far better weather sealing, an XQD card slot, 4K/60p video, ZERO focus breathing, a pull-back lens clutch that allows you to go to manual focus mode without leaving the viewfinder, a manual aperture ring (important for videographers), all the controls you need at your fingertips, menus that won't drive you insane, and a full-size HDMI port.
      Frankly, I'd just call the A7III fairly priced in comparison.

    The S1 has a "constant preview" option that turns on the wysiwyg preview all the time without the need to push the button! Also, I thought the dynamic range and iso tests were great. Only thing missing was a stabilization comparison for photo and video.

    Have to disagree on the ISO test-- throw the video, at least, the Sony looks far better at 3200-12800 ISO. Past that, the Panasonic definitely takes the cake (But I don't see myself ever needing to have an ISO that high!)

    Hi, did you notice the massive bokhe differences between the sony and panasonic, are you sure you both shoot them wide open. The bokhe is night and day better on the pana. Can you investigate, is it due to electronic shutter rather than mechanical (as mr ortiz showed on the sony). Please investigate

      @keithgoreham1463 5 років тому

      All mirrorless cameras have shutters for stills, unless they've been disabled in "silent shooting mode". If there's a bokeh difference, it's all in the lens.

    • @vincentcestmois7529
      @vincentcestmois7529 5 років тому

      @John Jay all true. But we're not sure which shutter speed they used, and also the bokhe difference is MASSIVE, much more than that the EFCS trick can explain. So I'd really like the OP to investigate on this bokeh difference

    It's hard to tell if I like either lol. I would like to see the Panasonic next to the Canon EOS R and Nikon Z6 as well. I do think the ergonomics look pretty nice! I like a beefier camera body to counterweight larger lenses, I personally think it will reduce hand fatigue when hand-holding. Perhaps it will reduce the camera wanting to slip downward on the tripod from the lens weight too maybe? It looks cool! Probably the lenses are pretty nice being that they are partnered with Leica!

    I'm always curious when I watch one of your videos. You never disclose whether you're comparing raw files or jpegs when you look at "color science". If you are comparing Jpegs, then you are comparing the color rendition of the jpeg engine in each camera. This is probably not relevant for people who shoot raw. If you're comparing raw files, then you're comparing the profiles of the raw conversion software for each camera and not any color science inherent in the camera. Which is it? If you are comparing raw files, what software are you using?

    You say the Sony is cleaner but if we look at how color light works I think there is too much blue with Sony in the sense that the shots lack warmth. The only thing is I wasn't there and I don’t know what the light actually looked like in real life. When I l=ook at the paving at 2:32 the Sony looks very grey which makes me think, “too much blue”. I have studied color with both subtractive and additive methods. I can mix a chromatic grey with three primary colors (or RGB with light). I see a lot of grey with the Sony and not enough hue of color. I still like Canon the best. My preference.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  5 років тому +2

      Totally respect that and see what you mean about the grey for Sony! So if you had to compare one of these to a Canon, which would you go for?

    • @TheseusTitan
      @TheseusTitan 5 років тому +2

       The Slanted Lens , Do I have to know the answer to that? lol
      I had an experience with comparing three chipped VHS cameras with a single chip VHS or Hi 8 cameras in low light.
      The better color capturing cameras had three chips. One chip for red, one for green and one for blue. There was always more hue in the color as opposed to a single chip which would grey out in low light situations.
      Today, the majority of still cameras only have one chip. I wonder if Canon has chips that absorb more light. It would be an interesting experiment.
      I don’t really know how to chose which Canon to compare to the Sony model since I am not as familiar with Sony products (although I keep looking at them and I am intrigued by them - nice optics). I like the 5D overall. I can’t say it would make a good comparison but I feel it is a good workhorse.

      I have to say, I see many vids shot with Sonys that are out of focus or it is hunting. This is from long standing YTubers or pro photographers that would hate using out of focus footage. I still believe the sony struggles in action situtations ,running gun or vlogging. As for Pana, they have a terrible reputation for action focusing, so wouldn’t dip my toe until this camera has been proven over time. Canon maybe weak in testing against these mirrorless, but the the focusing is solid. Which is very important. Doesn’t matter how good the dynamic range is or 4k, bit rate, if it is out of focus, it makes the whole footage ready for the bin!

    I thought they were both the same sensor ? so I am surprised to see a difference in dynamic range and ISO performance, Personally less weight is what I want. and the ultimate focusing, so I like the Sony, but I own the A7r lll, I have even given up using f1.4 glass, I love my 55 and 85 f1.8 and I have a 28f2, today I compared my f1.4 glass using an adapter and when I was done I felt like selling all my big glass. the slightly more blurred background isn't worth the extra size and weight, and the image quality of the Sony f1.8 glass is so good, I am waiting for a Sony 35 f1.8, even though my Sigma 35 that I adapt is really good. but it is also big and heavy. I also find that the Sony Camera can do double duty, it can be a studio camera, and also a walk around camera for street photography because of it's size and weight. so I don't need one camera for street and one for studio shoots. I also think that like Sigma with there 105 that is over sized and there new 40 that is crazy big, that Canon lost there mind with the size of there new glass, the 28/70 f2 zoom is the weight of a 70/200, I would never carry that weight to get f2. and Panasonic seems to have the same thinking.

      We don't know yet who made the S1 sensor, but it doesn't have PDAF points on it. That's why the image is so noise-free compared to Sony, or the striping you get on a Nikon Z-series. It's also why the focusing isn't perfect. Tradeoffs.

  • @DonGutierrez
    @DonGutierrez 5 років тому +1

    Great comparison guys!
    Definitely not surprised the S1 does a little better than the Sony, and do appreciate the warmer tones, slightly better dynamic range, stronger video capacity, better EVF and the like. I'd honestly like to get my hands on one to try it out.
    But for the price body alone, the Sony is still a force to be reckoned with even a year later, and has a lot of great support both on brand and 3rd party because it's been at it longer.
    People can lay all the specifics about how much better the S1 is compared to the A7III, and it's duly noted. But it's not a Sony killer, not even by a long shot. It's really stiff competition, yes, but it's not gonna get flocks dropping A7III's on ebay to grab this off the market.

    I am finding that sensor, AF and most of the features, really are not the big factor when buying a camera now days. An image is an image and pretty much every camera takes great images now days, if you know what to do with it.
    So my first thought when buying a camera is how the camera feels in the hand, how nice is the grip, am I going to get pissed off with the button placement.
    I still could never own a Sony just because I hate the body of the A7 series cameras and for the kinds of photography I do, the advantages of the Sony really are not a huge factor.
    I found a similar thing with the Nikon, I have owned Nikons fore nearly 20 years and when the Z6/7 came out, I didn't like the grip, it was too small for my hand. Conversely, whilst I am not a big fan of the Eos R, I found it a lovely camera to hold but I didn't want to spend thousands on lenses and the options currently available whilst exceptional optically, weigh a ton.
    So currently my mirrorless camera of choice is the Fuji X-H1. It doesn't have the AF of the A7III or the X-T3 but it is nicer to hold. The lenses are not that expensive and I generally get amazing results. Though for studio work I still go back to the D800 because I much prefer the OVF.

    • @keithgoreham1463
      @keithgoreham1463 5 років тому +1

      Yep. That's pretty much how I feel. I just went with the S1 instead of a Fuji. I tried the Z7 (and was not impressed) at my local shop back in August, and then immediately walked over to the Sony counter with the full intention of buying one. But no combination of available extensions could make the Sony comfortable to hold. I would have been shooting with my knuckles digging into the bevel of every lens they sold. Eye-AF was not worth getting arthritis from bad ergonomics.

    I have the S1 for about 4 months now and I used to shoot videos with the A7iii. My thoughts: S1 is slower in AF while A7iii is so fast. S1 IBIS is better in a sense but its negligible and can be compared with the A7iii. S1 is huge and heavy as compared to the A7iii and flying on a gimbal can hurt your back. S1 does not have much lens choice as of now and adapting is the only way to go but with adapting lenses, you add more weight, reduce the optical quality and take away the AFC and you will only have AFS and take note that AF on the S1 is already weaker as compared to the A7iii. S1 has better video features like 4K60p internal, 10 bit 422 external, better dynamic range and all that jazz. A7iii is limited to 4k30p, 8 bit 420 internal, 8 bit 422 external but does the bit really matter for your kind of work? Maybe but most of the time, you will use your cameras for social media only. If you will use it professionally, S1 will be better but still, it does not shoot RAW. Bottomline is this, it does not matter anymore. As cheesy as it sounds, the camera that you use is the better camera. So what do you use? I currently use the BMPCC4K. I don't make much sense now. LOL

I am considering getting the S1 as I own their MFT cameras, which are amazing but have been getting into studio and portrait photography lately, and having a FF system seems to be the best way to go with that, where if I want to do more exploration, travel and long walking photography I have my light weight MFT system camera.

    I think that is the fact that a lot of people don't trust and know panasonic as they do in Sony atm, but I think that Panasonic gets the Sony in this comparison ..Still both are great and its all depends on your personal budget and taste color wise...As you said Sony are bought more because they are TRENDING ...not because they are better! From my point of View ...Fuji XT3 is the best choice Today ...decent colors,fast enough ,u have decent third party lenses ...so I would pay 1.5 on glass instead of buying one of These 2!

      I have to disagree, Canon was the king, and Sony took it to them and won. Sony is now the mirrorless standard and everyone compares a camera to the Sony. Good on Sony for shaking things up.
      I have really gone over switching to mirrorless, but I can’t justify the move. It is expensive, and the advantages are small. As a amateur, I do think the DSLRs are still very good and can get just as good stills and video, it is not worth it unless you are a pro and can offset the cost, for your through put of work.

    Hey guys. Enjoyed the comparison. A question for you. Photography gets a lot of criticism for being a boy's club that often treats women as little more than fleshy puppets. Why do you think this is?

      @@BlackZEddie I guess mostly people who want their daughters to grow up in a world of equal opportunities, equal pay, and where their aspirations that are not limited by outdated patriarchal values that value them by primarily their appearance. And yes, women are complicit in this system.

    • @AndyDay
      @AndyDay 5 років тому

      @@BlackZEddie Unfortunately, my daughters will not decide if they are entitled to equal pay, or equal opportunities, or to be judged by their knowledge and expertise rather than by their appearance. They don't get to decide - society does, and that's why I'd like to see society change. I want my daughters to have the same power and social privileges as men, whether it's to become a rocket scientist or to become a pornstar. I don't want to prohibit anyone's choices of what they want to do but rather create an even playing field, starting with shifting a visual culture that perpetuates the idea that women are nothing more than their appearance.

    • @BlackZEddie
      @BlackZEddie 5 років тому

      @@AndyDay such double standards. You want all those things for women, and the first thing you want to do is take away their choice. And, you don't seem to get it, depending on the field, like modeling, appearance is key.
      Another thing you don't seem to get, or refuse to, is women are just as sexual, if not more, than men.
      You're like one of those nutty bible-humpers at the beach telling everyone they're a bunch of sinners.

    • @AndyDay
      @AndyDay 5 років тому

      @@BlackZEddie How am I taking away anyone's choice? I'm completely happy for her to be a model, I'm happy for her to exploit her appearance, I'm more than happy for her to get paid for being attractive in front of a camera. I'm just suggesting that a photography channel has the potential to be more thoughtful in how it presents information.
      A few questions for you: If you had a daughter, would you want her to be judged primarily on her appearance, or on her expertise and knowledge? Would you want society to give her fewer opportunities than men, and to pay her less than men for the same work?

    Both cameras are very good. The differences are usually very small, although the Sony camera is much older.
    The lens offer Sony is significantly better. In addition, the Panasonic S1 / S1R sells very badly. Unfortunately, it looks like a flop.

      I've had the chance to play with Sony's autofocus in a Jason Lanier workshop, so I've seen what it can do in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. It really is impressive. But frankly, eye autofocus is only really necessary in certain use cases, such as weddings (Lanier's bread and butter). Frankly, I almost never use any modes other than single/9-point AFC/AFS for my work. So I mostly compare the AF performance of my S1 to my trusty D850's, where it's much faster in AFS for stills (but crap in AFC), and nearly perfect in AFC for video (versus completely unusable on the D850).
      So... Good enough AF for indoor/street stills and video work, and it will very likely improve over time with updates. The ergonomics of the camera are all FAR superior to Sony (which I'd have if I could comfortably hold one), so not skinning my knuckles on a lens bevel trumps the AF issues for me. The rest of the lenses I need will all be here by summer, and there's many, many more due by the end of the year.
      The real test though, which my GH5 never quite passed, was whether I'd gravitate to it and away from my D850's. Well, I have. The D850's only come out for wildlife/sports shoots now.
