  • Опубліковано 6 сер 2024
  • Back in 2008, Panasonic and Olympus launched the Micro Four Thirds System (M4/3). Since then, Panasonic in particular has released renowned cameras like the Lumix GH5 and GH5s, touting superb video performance and the G9 which is awesome for photography.
Now, Panasonic has taken one step further, and the Lumix S1 and S1R are the company’s first foray into the Mirrorless Full-Frame market. Along with that is the L-Mount Alliance, a joint venture between Leica, Panasonic and Sigma!
So, we have here the Lumix S1R, with all three of Panasonic’s L-Mount lenses, along with a Leica Summilux SL 50mm F/1.4 and even two other Sigma Art lenses with the MC-21 L-Mount Adapter! So, is this all new Full-Frame S1R worth it? Well, let’s just say, you’ll be amazed.
*Audio in this review is recorded with all new audio gear, Sennheiser XS Wireless Digital Series
*The Sigma Mount Converter MC-21 is not compatible with Leica’s existing L-Mount cameras due to changes in specifications.
*Specifications for the S1R video footage are as follows,
    3,840 x 2,160 UHD 4K
    MP4 / 100Mbps
25 Frames per Second / PAL
    Picture Profile - CineLike D (Saturation -2, Hue -2, All else 0)
    Color Temperature - 5600K
    Aperture - F/1.4

Great review, I really enjoyed it and it sums up how I feel about my S1R,24-105 combo with the S 50mm f1.4 Pro. It is a very satisfying experience, in reference to my Sony A7R3.
I was a Sony shooter for 10 years and my last camera was the A7R3 with the 85gm, 24gm and the 50mm1.4 za, and it was a great combination and the output with these lens combination is amazing.
However, when I got my S1R with the 24-105 F4 that output from that combination was simply heaven, more so then with my A7R3. And then when I got the S 50mm F1.4 Pro, the S1R really shined and I was very, very content with the kit lens. And let me tell you, I AM NOT A ZOOM LENS TYPE OF GUY, NEVER HAVE BEEN, the kit lens changed my mind.
I sold all of my Sony gear and it one of the best decisions I have made. The User experience alone is worth it, IMO. I love Sony and I think them for their innovation into the ML market, but S1R simply stole my heart.
The AF is better on the Sony, but I don't need very quick AF for my shooting style. I am 99.9% still life and landscape and portraits. And I only shoot in good to ok light and never shoot past 3200, (I shot with 6400 and beyond and the S1R does excel, but I try to keep it low)which is why I went with S1R and not the S1, just a better fit. And I shot 16:9 ratio so 7.3mb of resoultion is automatically taken away, which is still plenty of resoultion for me.
Yes, the price is steep but it is worth it, IMO. The A7R3 is a fantastic camera at a cheaper price point and a little better AF, but the User Experience simply wasn't there for me and if you could put a dollar amount on the User Experience, I think the price would be cheaper for the S1R. And the output and the rendering from the S1R combo it is leica- ish, seriously. If price isn't issue I would wholeheartedly recommend the S1R or if you are a hybrid video/stills and don't demand a lot of resoultion the the S1 is worth it.
I hope my comments helped someone who is on the fence between the AR73 and S1R or the S1 and A7III. If it wasn't for the autofocus I would give the S1R 5/5 but as of now I give it a solid 4.5/5. And just for the record I gave my A7R3 a 4/5 because it to had focusing issues, though it may be a bit better with the new Firmware.
    Thanks for reading.

Thank you for watching and your well thought out comment, especially from. SONY user. We agree with you on many of your points.
The S1R surprised us in a lot of great ways and became one of our favourite full frame systems on the market.
Like you said this isn’t taking anything away from Sony, which makes great cameras and lenses, but we also really like what the S1R brings to the table.
      Thanks once again!

@mcsey2k1 I've already liked your comment a year ago, as well as this video. But I did have the hopes up to stay with m43 and my already high end Panasonic gear. The S line was on my list already when they announced it as I love the Panasonic bodies and the Panasonic Leica lenses but I never switched. Much thanks to this review from tech360 and your mini review/comment here I pulled the trigger on an almost new (900 shutter counts) S1R + 24-105 F4 at about 60% of the price of the new kit. Thanks for writing your thoughts and experiences :)

Travis the MC-21 I had wasn’t a production unit so the autofocus wasn’t fantastic. It worked but not that fast.
Because of the inconsistency with AF-C on the camera I stuck to single autofocus. My advice is try the adapter when it comes out and see if it works for you speed wise.

Maybe the best Panasonic Lumix S1R camera reviews I've seen. Thank you!
I finally got my hands on one at B&H here in New York. Yup, feels pretty much like your average DSLR. Great grip. Built like a tank! But I'm so happy that someone did a shoot that also focuses on how well the lenses work with the body as well. I just haven't seen a review as good as yours about this. Absolutely fantastic!
There was one reviewer of the Panasonic 50mm f/1.4 and he was actually a bit giddy about the lens. He couldn't stop talking about how great it was! The people-oriented shots taken in this video are quite fantastic. And the previous shots taken I've seen were done with the S1. Not the S1R. And there is a difference. The Leica lens does seem to have similar characteristics to an MF system...
I'm firmly in the m43 camp and love the quality I get from it. However, I 'thought' I would always get a MF camera for those bigger and expensive shoots I want to do... The image quality and 'look' of MF is absolutely beautiful. Even a 7-year old MF camera gets as good if not better quality than the best DSLR out there. Heck, look on DXO mark and you'll see that at least in the portrait score, a 10-year old Phase One camera still holds the top spot. Which for fashion, portrait and possibly landscapes, is exactly what you want. But they are big, expensive and mostly for studio work. It's 2x the money for a 'refurbished' Phase One system than a new S1R with a LEICA lens... Yes, a Leica....
I tell ya... When 2020 rolls around.. This camera can be a tough one for me to turn down.

Hi Ricardo thank you so much for your kind words. We were fortunate to have the support of all three companies here in SG to be able to show examples of the respective lenses.
Yes the Panasonic 50 1.4 is a fantastic lens. Only when you put it next to the Leica lens do you see how good Panasonic’s version is.
Yes the Leica lenses can give you that MF look. To me they are comparable to the Otus but with autofocus.
I do have to say though is that MF is MF and the tones and dynamic range you will get will exceed that of full frame currently.
Having said that, if your shoots don’t require that level of detail and DR, you will be more than happy with the S1R.

20% positive 80% negative comments pricing too big. What people don’t realise you can have the best camera but it won’t make you a great photographer it’s not the camera makes the person its person that makes the camera. I m not fussed about size I rock my 5d m3 yes now that’s a big size of course I like the feel if it wasn’t big I wouldn’t use it or have brought it obviously I upgrade to the 5d m4 now but 1 day btw I’m not canon fanboy lol I just love canon that’s all. what else people in the comment section complain about price “here I am laughing” why obviously top range mirror less and DSLR re costly not cheap you want the best pay the cash or go budget. Panasonic gh5 and the S1 etc.. have the best mirror less cameras in the game yes Sony give better options for all price ranges but I think so far 2019 Panasonic are smashing it

Great video, especially thank you for sharing your experience with Leica lenses. To be honest, I was holding my purchase decision for so long just to see this camera. In many aspects, this camera makes perfect sense; great IQ, great body design, unique features, best EVF. For my use-case, the autofocus is not a problem (I use AF-S and reframe technique most of the time), and it is actually faster than Sony & Nikon (haven't tried Canon Eos R). Also it provides a great upgrade path to epic Leica lenses. Furthermore, I am curious of what Sigma Foveon sensors will bring to the market.
However, after trying this camera a bit, I decided it's not for me. The weight is the deal-breaker. I am not a professional, but a hobbyist; but I want to have a good FF mirrorless to carry with me during my trips. I don't have the funds to buy or the space to carry multiple prime lenses (especially on flights). That's why the kit lens is the most important glass for me. The Panasonic S1 (1021 gr) with the kit lens (680 gr) is more than half a kilo heavier than the Nikon Z6 (675 gr) with the 24-70 f4 lens (500 gr). To be honest, that's a huge difference for me, which I could sacrifice some features over.
On another note, I was lucky enough to test all 3 Panasonic lenses. For me 24-105 & 70-200 are good lenses. But the 50mm f/1.4, oh my, that lens was amazing. Amazingly quick, impressive IQ, the nice bokeh coupled with the depth-of-field. I was highly skeptical about the price point; but when you use it, you understand why it is so expensive.

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  5 років тому +2

Thanks for watching. The camera’ size is definitely something that will be a deciding factor for some. I had it for approx three weeks to test it, and after a few days of continuous usage the size didn’t bother me. I also traveled with it as well. Panasonic is coming out with some very nice lenses in the future for the system you might find interesting. As for the 50, yes it’s so good we had a hard time in some of our tests seeing a difference from the Summilux. It’s there but as I said in the video it’s that good. It’s by far my favourite lens on the S1R and the lens that spend 70% of the time on the camera.

  • @normankleinberg5525
    @normankleinberg5525 5 років тому +3

Thank you for the review. What I don't understand is this attempt to classify the S1 as a "hybrid stills/video" camera and the S1R as mainly for stills. I've heard this from the Panasonic marketing people and it seems to be the company line, I can allow for that. But why would you agree? From what I've read the S1, when shooting stills, has better high ISO performance (e.g. less noise) and better dynamic range. Now this is from someone who bought the S1R anyway, so I'm not just trying to feel better about my decision. Another ironic point is that I used to shoot Nikon D2H, went to M43 because I couldn't lug around that camera and telephoto lenses, but fell in love with the G9. I wanted a full frame high-res camera and despite the S1R's size I similarly fell in love with its grip, buttons, controls, etc. and decided I'd go back to the gym. :)

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  5 років тому

Thanks for watching! If a camera gets us back in the gym that’s a good thing :)
Reason I say it’s more for photographers is the megapixel size. There is also very good dynamic range to the images and while I haven’t been able to use the S1, I would have a hard time believing a 24mp sensor with smaller file size will have better DR than a larger file size image.
Also the S1 will receive the L-Log update to video where as the S1R won’t be. Also a nod by Panasonic they see it as more of a hybrid camera.
What’s interesting about the S1R was when I would show it to friends and colleagues, they would first comment how big it is, put it down then a few min later pick it up, use it for a bit and kept holding onto it. It’s one of those cameras that begs to be held. Great ergonomics and feel. Some cameras have this others don’t.

Love your review ! :) It brought some hope about the lenses. I bought S1 with kit lens and would like to buy/ change to some native lenses.
Really like images from Sigma Art 40mm F/1.4. Is this Sigma MC-21 converter work well or is it not compatible with AF-C)? I've also read Auto-exposure and high precision AF in AF-S mode is achieved. Could you advice please :)

      Thanks Peter for watching.
The Sigma adapter I tested was pre-production so wouldn’t be fair for me to say if it’s good or not. I can say the pre-production adapter was slower to focus than native lenses though.
Actually AF-C currently on the S1 or S1R isn’t at its best, so I didn’t really use it. I found AF-S was more than sufficient for my needs.
As far as auto exposure and high precision AF, yes it works well in AF-S.

@@TECH360TV cheers bro. I feel I need more resolution so I think I'm going upgrade to S1R. I'm shooting landscapes and children sometimes in action. Found AF-C in S1 is not always fast enough to adopt to running children. Maybe need to practise more and try different modes :). Do you think S1R would really help with image quality or just alow me to blow the size up when printing? Can't afford to buy Leica or Pro Panasonic lenses so maybe my better option is Z7 ? Better AF-C and cheaper lenses :)
      Thanks for your opinion

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  5 років тому +1

In respect to Image quality the S1R and Z7 are pretty much on par. The only difference will be colours in my opinion.
The S1R will show more detail for sure as it’s higher megapixel and since you are shooting landscape that will come in handily.
In terms of focus, you don’t really need AF-C that much I found. Play with different modes of focusing, but I found People and face detection it locks on pretty well. Also the S1R will be faster than the Z7 with its 4K and 6k high speed shooting will help capture fast action.
Also there will be updates to the AF-C in the near future to address some of its issues.

@@peterpeterson7993 If you are tracking running kids my recommendation would be to use the "Tracking" focus selection (the 2nd one from the far left next to the people/animal one) and use continuous focus. I've found it does a great job tracking running dogs and cats and such. Also very good on people as well frankly. Don't mind if in the viewfinder things don't appear as if they are always perfectly in focus. This is perhaps one issue but you have to get past it. I found that while shooting moving subjects in continuous mode and the 6fps in the viewfinder it appeared as if there were a number of shots not nailing it. When reviewing on screen I was shocked to find 100% of the shots taken were dead on in focus. So trust the camera and yourself to keep it on the mark.

TECH360.TV can you speak a little more about the difference in image quality vs the X1D at low ISO? I have the X1D and am thinking about switching or complementing it with the SR1 due to greater lens options, faster AF/shooting, tilt LCD and better EVF. I shoot mostly handheld and while I love the X1D it does have its limitations as my main camera for different situations (I am not a pro but do sell my work).

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  5 років тому

Peter Mendelson Hi Peter thanks for the comment.
The image quality and color of the X1D is still at the top even compared to the S1R. Having said that, the S1R image quality paired with the right glass is to me some of the best images from a full frame camera system to date. The colours coming from the DNG files are very nice, pleasant skin tones etc.
As for speed yes the S1R will be much faster than the X1D so for those shoots you need that versatility you will have it with this camera.
I would say though that if you can keep the X1D and add the S1R to your workflow you will have a great 1,2 combination.
If you would like to see some raw files please DM me with your email address. I can send those over to you to see and compare.

      @TECH360TV  4 роки тому

Hi. I currently have this and the S1H with me for a follow up review with the new lenses.
Here is my take on it:
The camera is very good and the price drops on it make it even more appealing.
The mount will be around for a long time. Now you have Panasonic, Sigma and Leica. The Panasonic lenses are very good and if you compare them to others the prices are justified for the most part.
Leica is Leica and it’s a luxury to have one of their lenses if they fall into your Budget.
Sigma has been the saviour to the alliance in my opinion. Their new mirrorless lenses are great and at a price point that’s affordable without compromising on quality.
Additionally there are a number of third party mounts that let you use Canon glass with it as well and the performance is very good.
What hurt these cameras from the beginning was their price point. They were too high. Since then Panasonic has lowered the price and online sellers like B&H have had flash sales to move bodies at fantastic prices.
I would say go for it and invest into some Sigma Lenses.

      Build Quality
      Design
      Color Science
      Better Video spec
      Fantastic Menu system
      Slightly better Image quality
      Cons:
Two SD Card slots (Buffering issues at high frame rate
      Screen doesn't articulate
      Battery life
Not compatible with many third party flash systems
if something goes wrong will take a longer time to repair.
      S1R Pros:
      Less Expensive
XQD card slot (Now compatible with CF Express) and SD card slot
      Full touch interface
more customisable buttons if you prefer
      Timely updates vs Leica
Compatible with Flash systems like Profoto etc.
      Articulating screen
      Cons:
      Menu system isn't as intuitive
Build Quality while good isn't at the SL2 level
      Too many buttons for some
It really comes down to what you need and prefer and of course budget. Both are fantastic cameras and both have great image quality. I found the Leica to have slightly better image quality but unless you are pixel peeping its hard to see the differences.

Panasonic get it extremely well with the "S" series. Now playing with the S1 in my hands, I can say this and the S1R are for sure the best mirrorless pro bodies out there as of today. However, I'm not impressed by their 24-105 kit lens and I can say the Canon RF24-105 is a much better lens. Same for the RF50/1.2 - out of this world. So - Canon (normally) is leading from the lens quality perspective, but Panasonic has the much better body.
I'm *very* curious to know how the Leica SL lenses work on the S1/R. If they works like native lenses, then this is the route to go.
My take on this - if one can afford the Leica SL lenses (and if they work natively) on the Panasonic, this is the way to go. The Panasonic bodies are serious pro devices for sure, but I can't say the same for the f/4 zooms - not interested in these.
The image quality that these Panasonic bodies are outputting is a pure Leica (quite normally considering the sensor from the Leica Q2, which is also living in the S1R).
Poor Sony - very tough times ahead of them... Canon is beating the dust out of them with the RF lenses and now Panasonic is killing them with the bodies... ;)

    • @TECH360TV
      @TECH360TV  5 років тому

Hi Alexander thanks for watching. As for the 24-105 I know what you mean, especially compare to the Canon lenses you mentioned. The 50 1.2 is a fantastic lens and one of Canons best. This is why I mainly shot with the 50 1.4 Lumix S Pro lens and the 70-200. The 50 from Panasonic is very close to the Summilux.
As far as focusing with Leica lenses it’s just like using the SL with Leica glass. No differences in speed. In fact I would say the lenses focus a bit faster on the S1R.
Overall we believe the S1R could be the future SL2 if And when Leica releases it. You can see a lot of the SL DNA in the camera and the performance enhancements being a newer camera just make it even more enticing.
Also I heard Panasonic is invested in the S Series so more lenses should be on the way in the future.

    • @alexanderivanoff

@@TECH360TV , Thanks for your swift response and for the great and faithful review.
This is what I wanted to know - how the Leica SL lenses will perform on the S1/R, because from my POV, this is the way to go at least for now. It is obvious from the moment you open the Panasonic box in your hands that this is a premium, pro body that has much of the Leica DNA inside, and especially from the color rendering perspective, which is giving the shooter a great base to start with. The EVF and the shutter are just insane, but I'm not surprised, because Panasonic really shines in electronics.
I couldn't agree more with you that what's inside the S1R could be more or less what the new SL2 will be.
I'm also getting the S1R tomorrow and what I would love to see is how the new SL APO Summicrons will perform on it. Those lenses although being at f/2 are giving the same DoF as f/1.4 and there are many articles from Peter Karbe how this is achieved. And the fantastic S1R really deserves some top-notch lenses welded to its mount.
We are living in a very exciting times, see how things are changing - if only a few years back someone told me that I would really love & enjoy a Panasonic body, I would be smiling.
Now after they laid a very solid base, they need to keep pushing on the lens side - this system needs some really decent primes and most important ones are still 35, 50 and 85mm. And while they are having great 50 prime, we are yet to see any confirmation on the 35 and 85 side.
I also want to see they publish a clear lens roadmap and not just the shady statement "10 more lenses are coming by 2020".
With the above being said - to me the real competition in the high euality/premium segment is now between Canon (with the RF mount) and Panasonic (I'm not even considering Sony seriously in photography). And while Canon is having a fantastic lens roadmap and a pro body is under field testing now, I feel a need to see Panasonic is more focused on the lenses.
      Thanks for reading.

When I use cameras daily when I’m not filming, I’m always using straps.

TOOO BIG!!! As a leica TL2 user with APS L mount lenses and a large bag of Nikkor, Leica and Voightlander primes adapted for M mount, plus my main workhorse system is Panasonic MFT, I should be part of the target custormer base for this camera. But, it leaves me completely cold. This is heavier than my Nikon D700 which, of all Nikkon DSLRs was most built like a tank. Well the body I could probably put up with but, the lenses are ghastly; these are a different universe to my M mount primes. I can walk about with my Nikon D700 plus 35mm f2D or 50mm f1.8D but I wont do it often. I really dont want to look like a National Geographic outside broadcast unit on the streets and my back couldnt stand the strain. Quite apart from size these lenses have too much glass; I wont buy a lens with more than 10 elements as microtones are suppressed. I think the L mount alliance has lost the plot. Leica made the M10 smaller than the M9 and the redesign was expensive; it is worth making that effort. I cant see this stuff selling. I can buy a Sony A7rmkIII with a compact body and, yes, large lenses like these but, I can also buy small compact AF lenses too (35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8). I can end up with a full frame kit with 3 small primes; I cant do that with these camera bodies. So I am not interested. Canon and Nikon have failed to sell their bloated mirrorless offerings (the annual figures are out) and I dont see Panasonic selling either. I will stick with APS and MFT. Fantastic review as usual BTW ;-)

Hi Vici thanks for watching and feedback. APS-C and MFT cameras definitely have advantages when it comes to size. This camera I believe was designed for the pro Photographers in mind. That’s not saying you or others out there shooting with smaller cameras aren’t pro, but it’s built to hold up in various situations like the D5’s 1DX ‘s etc.
For me I was able to put size aside because the image quality is so good, but for others size will be a deciding factor which I respect. It’s about what works for the person individually.

@@TECH360TV Hmmmm its cost cutting; they do it because they can. Points out the size of a Hasselblad X1D with a compact AF lens; also points at the price. If we want to be absurd, points out a Leica M10 with 50mm f0.95 Noctilux; that lens sets the bar high and only has 7 elements and it drips with microtones. Cutting size and keeping image quality isnt cheap, its expensive especially when you have to harden components for Pro use. But, its worth doing. No the overall image quality of these L mount lenses isnt breathtaking; I can even see it in your video, I can see the deadening effect of too much glass. These lenses arent jack of all trades, they are optimised for the situations that most Pros will use; sharp edge to edge, contrasty and very flat field; emphasis on bokeh. They dont bother to make the image come alive in depth because shot wide open the depth is a couple of inches and there is nothing to make live. To make fast lenses with a wide range of image quality down to hyperfocal performance costs Summilux-M or Zeiss prices. Really my point is, we arent being given the choice and until we are I wont be interested. I dont demand expensive glass but, I do demand high quality lenses with less than 10 elements and will sacrifice aperture to get it. Sony gets this, Canon, Nikon and Panasonic dont, Olympus is worst by a mile and Leica damn well aught to, they make the best compact lenses in the world. Sorry my interest isnt just photographic, as well as taking hyperfocal street photos, I am a scientist and therefore lens design and lens properties matter to me just as much. I hate this trend of increasing some performance parameters at the expense of compactness and general image quality ;-)

Just buy the S1r and use it with medium or 35mm format manual lenses by using the proper ATG Gold lens adapter.

Mirrorless basically removes the mirror/pentaprism and reduces the flange distance. The body size can be a lot smaller but you then lose space for heat dissipation, ergonomics, battery space and ports etc. Same with lens, they may have OIS, weather sealing and other features. The S1/R is a high specification body. I wouldn't be surprised if Panasonic introduce alternative bodies with L-mount in different sizes and features. If you are happy to accept the IQ from smaller sensors then you can choose MFT/APSC bodies.

I have this camera with the battery grip. 24-70mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.4. Had the 70-200 f/4 but found a lot of focus breathing. Hope to get the f/2.8 version, but it's long & heavy.
