The Godmother Of Drumming Plays “Down With The Sickness”
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 гру 2019
- Have you ever found yourself making assumptions about someone before you’ve met them? What about before seeing them play drums? From assuming she plays ‘quieter’ instruments to not being taken seriously before an audition, Dorothea Taylor has heard it all when it comes to judging a book by its cover. She’s here to prove that you can’t always accurately assess a drummer - or anybody - by how they look. Check out Dorothea’s cover of “Down With The Sickness” by Disturbed!
Drummers come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and ethnicities. “No matter how good you are, how old you are, we’re all still part of a drumming family.” - Dorothea Taylor

"Oh, I'm sorry. Were we being too loud?"
"Not loud enough, son."
Love it 😂😂
My reaction was to remove him from the audition as if i was undercover boss, who taught you how to rock??😭😂
If it's too loud then you're too old.

Doctor: your grandma is sick
Grandson: how sick, doctor?
The grandma:

Yes
She wicked sick

What’s better than watching her on a screen, is having her show up to your 8th grade band class and giving you drum lessons. Changed my life and how I play even today. Still have the drum pad and sticks I got to keep.
No freakin way!! That is sooo cool! Love that
That's amazing! What a wonderful experience for you! I'm so glad you were able to learn so much from her and so cool you still have the pads and sticks from then. That's such a great memory for you!!
NOW THATS FUKIN COOL !!!!
That would of been great I gave up drumming sold all my to cheap to a guy for his daughter I was thinking of helping pass on the love of drums over money
Wow iconic. She’s awesome. Maybe I should get me a kit since I got neither space nor skill for a drum set for now 🤔
My grammy played the drums too. I will never forget the absolute shock as a 5 year old kid seeing grandma hop on the drum set and tear it up.
my grandad who passed 5 years ago was also a drummer, ofc male drummer etc pretty normal but he was 80 listening to disturbed, bush, tool, and others which is just strange considering his age haha but he always told me that he didnt care for the lyrics the song etc he cared the drums, because according to him in the modern age drums didnt matter anymore nothing special is being produced. so he only listened to real drummers no matter what genre. Also he introduced me into drumming when i was 8 and im still doing it. Amazing mentor.
@@leflyxdvdw grandad ❤️
Imagine her coming through with freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and the meanest drum solo you've ever heard, what an absolute legend.
This made me chuckle lol and I absolutely love that mental picture you gave me 😂
Thank you for that and I hope you have a great rest of your day
😂😂😂
I was thinking a bowl of the Strawberry bonbons. 😂
Everyone likes a good drummer and chocolate chip cookies
metal grannies always make the best cookies and the best beats! Rock on granny!
Coincidentally her grandson is really good at crocheting
Lmao
That’d actually be irony too. Because it’s the opposite of what you’d expect.
justin king 😂
Fuck I burst out and spilled my drink reading that lmaoooo
You jealous Snowflake?
She’s played for 50 years and the amount of control and discipline really shows. I have a lot of respect for this woman
This. This is the video that got me into drumming, was at a very low point in my life, 26 and worried I was "too old to start" because I wouldn't be as good as someone who's played since early childhood. 5 months later and I'm loving it! So thank you, Granny Drummer, this video always brings a huge smile to my face 🤘🏻💕
Never too late. I've been drumming since I was a teenager, but played it kind of safe. I joined a metal band at 40 and now I'm trying to get my feet as fast as I can - and it's working, at 40! Never too late!
Hey man, I’m 26 and looking into it as well, how’ve you liked it so far? Any tips for a potential fellow beginner?
@@joeschmoe2697 Find a place where you can practice happily without disturbing neighbours. Or invest in a good electronic drums. I loved to playe drums, but I needed to stop when I started moving between cities, and it was impossible to have my drum set in certain spaces.
@@joeschmoe2697I’m 31 and I just started 3 weeks ago. I ended up trying Drumeo 30 days free and I went from never having picked up drumsticks before, to working on playing enter sandman. I haven’t learned it yet, but that’s a giant leap from never playing before! I would give Drumeo a shot fr, it has highly exceeded my expectations!

My grand daughter ( on the spectrum ) was worried that 'girls don't play drums' She taught herself this by watching the video over and over. Tonight was her 21st birthday party and she played this and a Baby Animals song..full out on her electric kit...she stunned her friends and their families and it was wonderful. Dorothea's message has changed her attitude and given her so much confidence. Thank you so much. Grateful Nan.
My dad's still drumming at 70. He can't go as long because of his arthritis but he loves it and he says he'll play until he can't hold the sticks anymore.
"Grandma, how did you lose your hearing?"
"By being a badass, sonny"
The right response is "What?"
Punctuation is *key*
Lol
@Graustreif Elvanien r/Woosh
It's so fucked up, and she use to smack me for wearing a hat in her house...

Being able to get down with the sickness with the level of calm and cool as Dorothea should be something we all aspire towards
I'm a 43 year old mother, grandmother, aunty, sister etc and I'm also a drummer. I've been playing since I was 13. I also play bass and electric guitars and have been for the same amount of time as the drums. I love the words you said at the end Dorothea. Ultimately it doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, what your ethnicity is or by what you look like, people shouldn't judge by the cover of a person. You slayed those drums.
Rock on!!
“You play like my grandma!”
“Thanks dude!”

Guy : Sorry, are we being too loud?
Granma : You're too quiet.
😂😂😂
I thought the same thing ."No dear, you're not loud enough."
If it's too loud.... You're too old!!
As a 52 year old woman who rocks out to bands like this while I wash dishes I find this so awesome! Hopefully young people won't immediately judge and ignore us ladies, you never know who we might be inside!
My grandma bought a kit when she was 60. She used to joke that she wanted a bicep tattoo and to be called snake, but drummed in her church band lol!
She's the type to barge into your room and yell at you to turn that shit up.

The way she does this effortlessly is what gets me!
She makes this look so easy, which is a true sign of a master
Imagine your a teenager and your mom/aunt/grandma slays the drums in your band
Yeah I get that but... The Glock 17 Generation 3 is a modern Austrian made polymer based magazine fed pistol chambered in 9x19mm. Used by law enforcement around the world, the Glock 17 is known for it’s reliability, availability and affordability which play a key role in how it replaced the Beretta M9/92FS/92 and would arguably be the most famous pistol in the world - even featuring in Rick and Morty as one of the human pistol models in the show.

aw, her closing speech was super heartwarming. Thanks Dorothea. I needed that encouragement today.
UA-cam: You wanna see a granny playing Down with the Sickness?
Me: Sure.
Lol 😂
F n a i do!!!

The drums are so easy for it. If you did not have the song playing over it then it would not be nearly as impressive. She had good rhythm, but the lack of a better song is what makes this lose a lot of its potential.
Beetlesiri Can your grandma do this tho? 😂
I wanted to learn drums as a kid but was told it was not "ladylike" to play them. Just turned 50 got my first drum set!
I'm 55 and I just received my first. A present from my 30 year old son.
Yessss, you go girls 💪🤘
Good luck!
We just bought our Yamaha kit the other day (I'm 56, husband is 58, he played drums in HS I never have but am enjoying practicing). I wish I had stated back in HS forget "ladylike"! 😂

Always loved female drummers but for some reason never considered they would grow old, and that age would turn them into even more of a badass.
Bologna Older women have special powers.
Bologna Fully agreed!!!
Maureen Sullivan witch magic
Daniel Martin this is easy to answer. Recording drummers or drums is all on technique. Even 'famous' drummers are less expressive in the booth. On stage it is a different story non the less.
Even Michael Jackson sang 'normal' in the studio.
Because they lack visibility in the media since females are mostly seen from a sexualised light
“Mom, wheres granny?”
“she’s practicing her drum solo honey,”
“Huh?”

@Madison Bruchman that depends... are you in the habit of assuming anyone over a certain age would never be interested in metal (or hard rock, as the genres are so closely related, the names are fairly irrelevant), whether it be for playing or listening to that kind of music? If not, then no, you weren't being insulted, LOL!

I am a 62 year old percussionist, singer and promote music on a Global DJ. You are right on with you insight. Ageism is such a trap for people. Rock ON! I plan to.
I find it easier to see it as aging simply being gaining experience. A lot of people seem to assume that a lot of things are the perogative of "young" people. Age has nothing to do with most things other than literally how long people have been on this earth. Thinking anything else really is just a mild form of ageism.
If I remember seeing something about her... She started out with some kind of jazz band, then pop or surf rock (think of the style of Beatles and Beach Boys when they were "the thing"), but it's the technicality of the playing that got her into the harder styles of rock later on. My understanding is she has a reputation of coaching/teaching to improve the technique of other drummers out there. She's out there to school in more than one way.
I adore her!! Such respect, dear Lady!! Rock on!! 🤟🏻❤️🙌🏼 🥁 Disturbed is one of my all time faves!!
