Mickey is ultimately an underrated companion (and he is a companion he appeared for a longer time than Katarina, and she is often listed as the first companion death so yeah). And I think there is more you could have done with him on the Tardis longer than the 4 episodes he gets (he is very much a minor character in School Reunion and Girl in a Fireplace and does not do much in those stories). But as for the character as a whole, it is certainly something to see the character who was originally cowering in fear in front of the Nestene Consciousness in 'Rose' to the person who at the end story here effectively signs up to go to war with the Cybermen knowing that even if he wins he will likely not see the Doctor and Rose again.

I love how this story *industrialises* the concept of cyber conversion
not only does it make perfect sense since the Cybermen are all about efficiency, but the visuals of so many people marching into a factory single file is just...so disturbing, in the best way
that's something the entire modern era should be praised for tbh - not shying away from the body horror of what it means to become a Cyberman

Do you think moffat undercut that horror by subtly changing it from just a human brain in a metal suit to a human in a metal suit eg the pandorica opens
Then further in “closing time” by making it possible to reverse a conversion through love.

Yeah, that's the impression I got. He saw what happened the last time Rose was tempted so he's got to be a bit more firm this time. 1. I always thought Lumic wanted to convert the whole population because in his own frailty he saw humanity's frailty, and wants to get rid of it. He wants the species to evolve, I'm sure he says something like that at some point. He values the human brain but thinks it is let down by the human body, and basically just thinks a cyber society is better
    2. I believe there's a throwaway line of dialogue where Lumic says they crash the party to trst how effective the new cybermen are, giving them a bit of conflict, a run out etc
    3. I guess Lumic felt confident in assassinating the President without it having any reprecussions because of the earpods so he did it, specifically targetting him for denying his patent for cybermen at the start of the story
    4. Crane knows Lumic is upgrading the homeless and dispossessed, for cybermen that can help cybus industries/be test attempts for Lumic's conversion, but doesn't know Lumic is going to target all of society, and turns on him when he does. Basically he's a dick who thinks homeless people are scum, sounds believable to me sadly

I'd say that Lumic wanted to convert everyone to give the humanity eternal life. And I think it's pretty obvious from a phrase spoken multiple times that the cyberman are Lumic's eternal children. Also his plan just to convert everyone is the way it is because he is insane and doesn't and can't really have reasonable demands and points (he's basically an insane terrorist with a radical cyberjihad of sorts (didn't mean to offend anyone))

    • @EditedAF987
      @EditedAF987 3 роки тому

Still, that motivation and goal was really poorly defined. And insanity isn’t a satisfactory explanation on it’s own, a villain who just does things for no discernible reason isn’t really engaging as we don’t get a clear idea of what the heroes are up against and what the stakes at hand are.
For example, the Joker in the Dark Knight is insane yes, but he has a clear goal in mind, all of his actions throughout the film are trying to prove his point that people are all easily corruptible and will abandon their morals in the face of extremes. That’s what makes him so compelling, the fact that we actually know what his endgame is not only shows the audience what it is that’s at risk and what Batman has to fight for, but it also makes his insanity more intimidating as we know that he will literally do anything to achieve that goal.

I re-watched the story last night and I think I have a new motivation: He didn’t care for ‘preservation of life’, that was merely what he told himself to justify his actions. In reality, he simply believed this was a natural evolution and, with the world in the palm of his hands through Cybus Industries, he saw his ‘takeover’ as a mission to save humanity.
The scene that gave me that idea is his first scene in Age of Steel where he (in his own way) joyfully celebrates the Cybermen, he pushes for for their belief… and, in doing so, there’s a desperation to the delivery that makes me think the following… He programmed the Cybermen to match his own beliefs, the Cybermen’s comments of how they “think of the humans… think of their differences and their pain”, while they “suffer in the skin” are Lumic’s belief filtered though his creation.

  • @MediaTextReviewer
    @MediaTextReviewer 3 роки тому +31

"Why does John Lumic want to convert the population?" Well, I'll do my best at answering that.
Obviously Lumic needs to convert into a cyberman, but let's be honest here. If Lumic was the only one who did that living in a world full of humans, the exclusion and prejudice he would receive would be off the scale. Think of how unnerving it would be for people in a room with him, and how much they'd be trying to find a way to get away from him. There's no way Cyber-Lumic could be a part of human civilisation without any consequence when he's the only one who is a Cyberman. As such, he wants everyone else to be the same as him (which is part of the reason why he's so fitting as a creator/humanistic version of them, in the same way that Davros is to the Daleks, because he embodies the ideals of the Cybermen so well). He wants acceptance, he's probably been facing physical and social disadvantages thanks to his disability for some time, the last thing he wants is to face exclusion and bile from those who are unwilling to accept him as a Cyberman. Lumic seems to believe he is a great man, constantly bringing how the technological developments of his company have benefitted the world. He doesn't want his name and legacy as a genius inventor and inspirational mind to be tarnished because some people might be racist towards him due to his upgrades.
Also, Lumic has been crippled and dying for quite some time as the story goes out of its way to remind us. Lumic has been facing the brink of death for a while and has obviously therefore had a lot of time to reflect on the fragility and mortality of humans in general, and how beneficial it would be (from his point of view) to remove that and preserve life, and cybernetic enhancements are his method of doing that. Lumic's own approach to death has made him want to repel it in any way he can, and by converting everyone into Cybermen, he will accomplish this. There is dialogue in the story that supports this notion. The speech Lumic gives to the President in part one (particularly the line you chose to include in the intro of Cybercember "The most precious thing is the human brain and yet we allow it to die") perfectly demonstrates this. He wants to achieve preservation not only for himself, but for everyone, as he believes sickness and age will get them all in the end (again, another reason why he is such a great representative for the Cybermen and their ideals in NuWho). Hence why he advertises the choice of being upgraded to the doctor in part 2, by stating his Cybermen never sicken and have a life without pain.
On top of that, being a dying cripple and the fact that nobody else seems to be able/willing to help him probably just made him a little angry at the world, too. The fact that the President refused his plans and 'condemned' him in his mind probably made him think "screw it if these causes you guys pain and heartache, I'm doing this and to hell with you guys if you don't like it". As such, there are plenty of reasons subtly indicated in the story as to why Lumic wants to upgrade everyone and not just himself.
As for the Mr Crane stuff, I think it's just a case of selfish business sidekick is cool with doing immoral things until his association with a crazy madman catches up with him. He was perfectly willing to go along with Lumic's plans until it was his turn to get upgraded. His turning point was after he ripped out his ear pod once Lumic tried to brainwash/hypnotise him into walking into the upgrading factory. After that, he found Lumic and tried to kill him, because he realised he wouldn't be spared.
Yeah, you're re-writing would have been a good way to make sure everything made sense but I think the way it is mostly makes sense anyway. Some of it just isn't stated blatantly outright but is rather implied through subtle hints and subtext, such as what I've just pointed out.
I think he just killed the President out of spite. He expected the President wouldn't accept the upgrade offer, and would in turn be killed. But this is the same man who 'condemned' him earlier, in his mind. He probably hated the President's guts after that. Also, since he isn't a complete monster but rather just an over-ambitious madman, Lumic probably wanted to be fair and give everyone the offer of upgrading by their own choice first before resorting to the ear pods to brainwash them.
You're right that the story could have done more to build the new parallel world it just introduced (though given how much it already had to juggle around in this 90 minute story, it did a decent enough job overall). But I think there's just enough world building here for the story to get away with it. This two-parter isn't completely perfect but it's at least a solid 8/10 for me. Easily one of the best NuWho stories (to be fair, the bar isn't particularly high) and quite underrated imo.
Still, your reviews amaze me as always with how technically polished and informative they are. (P.S. had no idea about the Jake-Ricky gay deleted scene, lol that was a surprise for me)

I'm disappointed that you didn't discuss in detail what I consider was a real strength of this story: the emphasis on the horror of the real people that have been converted, something that we did not see much of in Classic Who. Three particular ways this was emphasised: 1) We knew Pete's world Jackie Tyler before she was converted. 2) We heard the cyberconverted bride-to-be Sally Phelan talk about her fiance etc 3) we saw the reactions of all the cybermen with their inhibitors off. These were the things that for me made this a groundbreaking story.

I know this is a little too early to ask but what’s next on the cards for December 2021? Mastercember? Sontarancember? Weepingcember? Regenerationcember? Ice Warrior-cember?
Especially since your going into other media so you can space out the first 25 days.

I’m a massive fan of the idea of having a crippled and dying man like Lumic developing a god complex due to the massive innovations Cybus was responsible for pre conversion stuff, he felt like he was necessary to the world and he felt his innovations were necessary for everyone, with or without their consent, I mean imagine how someone so delusional with that much power would act, it’s a pretty neat characterisation for him.

I love you trilbee. I really do. I have followed you for about over 9 years now, and have not disagreed with you on much, but I gotta on this. Lumic does have a motivation. Lumic is a man driven by his egotistical worldview and narcissism. Someone else mentioned the quote Lumic says about the human brain. He needs this, and so he starts researching it. After looking at it, he discovers the horrors of conversion and the loss of individuality, but he doesn't stop it. He uses conversion as a cruel punishment for those whom he has distain for (which is all humanity). He wants to maintain individuality and emotion for himself but has no problem taking it from others. Also he has been publicly criticised by the president. I think he crashed that party as a power play mainly because he could. Lumic's ultimate flaw is that he was too paranoid. He didn't trust Mr. Cole, and that lead to Mr. Cole to do what he did. I don't really like much of Series 2. But this is my favorite story in it.

    "What happens if I refuse?"
    "I'm telling you, don't"!
I wouldn't even really consider the shutdown code thing to not be a deux-ex machina outside of the Mickey thing because the Doctor was clearly pushing him along to get to that point and as established in the scene they made everything compatible with everything else so it all kind of slides along well enough.
As for Lumic the way I view it is that he is the kind of man arrogant enough to assume that the Cybermen way of life will be better in the long run and wants to impose that onto others (I mean he's already got everybody on downloads and stuff so this is just the next step for him). He's a bit hypocritical of course since he himself doesn't want to be converted until he actually dies but he seems pretty firm that in the long run people will be better off this way. He's already kind of a Davros homage-rip-off anyway so it's not really as huge a hole as the video suggests.
Also, kind of surprised you didn't mention the whole DELETE business which seems to be one of the more contested aspects of these particular Cybies.

I mean, for your plot hole argument, doesn't the quote that you use from this two-parter at the start of your intro explain it? He does it for the continued existence and perseverance of the human race. A machine is undying and untiring. Nor can it become sick in the same sense as a human could.

Great video, but I have to disagree with you on the John Lumic thing, the dude was simply a classic mad scientist, he truly believed that the Cybermen were the perfect upgrade for all of humanity because he thought that humans were too weak and too vulnerable. And in regards to the other themes behind Lumic's plan, what better way to control the population than if literally nobody has the ability to think outside of the box or for themselves as Cybermen, he's a simple villain, but I think they pull him off really well and I love the idea that in the parallel universe the Cybermen are birthed out of one maniac genius who thinks he's a God, it adds another layer to the Cybermen human dynamic, but I do agree about Mr. Crane, when he turns on Lumic in the second part it always kind of confuses me XD Great video though, I really enjoyed it and hope you have a good Christmas!

That John Lumic plothole also rears its head during that scene where he meets the President, asking him to approve "the ultimate upgrade" ("but I am dying"). It's left vague what Lumic is actually asking for here, and retrospectively makes little sense why Lumic is meeting him.

I think that Lumic's motivation for turning the human race into Cybermen was a messiah complex. He's believes himself superior to others (the Cybermen later say that he is superior), has the political and economical means to do whatever he wants, and thinks the human race is flawed. He says himself as the Cyber Controller that he is setting people "free" with "a life without pain" - Lumic's life has been fraught with health problems, making him immobile in that wheelchair. He simply wants mankind to share in his freedom of pain - that and paired with his insanity.
Though that rewrite would've been exceptional, and it is partly done after Crane's attack on him with the Cybermen forcibly converting him.

It's such a shame that sometimes people try their best to make an awesome story, and it's only afterwards it's made that its potential is realised. Ah well, the MIckey stuff is glorious, and thank you for reminding me of that.

I'm in complete agreement with you about this story. I loved it when I first saw it but it's faults are obvious with hindsight. I think it was heavily ghost written by RTD but it needed at least another draft or two to really make it shine. I'd honestly love a spin-off of Pete's World. This iteration of the Cybermen design is genuinely amazing and iconic, I love it. It is a great shame the Cybusmen never really hit it out of the park with a properly classic story.

This episode did age remarkable well. John Lumic, a man who was smarter than the average person, believed he knew what was best for them and forced a medical procedure on them, claiming it was for their own good but didn't want the procedure for himself. Even owning his own news networks which he used to cover up his crimes. If it were written today we'd say it was on the nose.

I know I'm 3 years late but I personally always saw the reason why Lumic wanting to convert humanity into Cybermen as him seeing the people of Earth as his property, and his position of power on his Earth most likely did not help the viewpoint getting weaker, and just like every powerful megalomaniac throughout history he didn't want too loose what he has when he dies, and so decided too make that viewpoint permanent by forcing everyone on Earth too be his eternal slaves in silver walking coffins.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and the reason why he assassinated the President of the UK is most likely out of petty spite because he said no too that overgrown man baby of a business man.

I think that I would have been more accepting the the more robotic Cyberman design if the parallel world had more of an emphasis on cybernetics. Not necessarily as any way to survive extreme conditions but just as alternative solutions to medical problems we have in the real world eg: having more slimmed down versions of Cybermen arms and legs as prosthetic limbs or Cybus branded based chest boxes to assist in things such as heart or lung based diseases (similar to what one of the characters in Spare Parts had) so that these Cybermen were seen by the standard people on that Earth as just another upgrade. Another thing I'd like to mention: which situation would have been worse to be in when the mind control/emotional inhibitors got cut off, having already been converted into a Cyberman or having just stepped into a conversion chamber.

I must confess I never really liked the RTD era cybermen design.... The chunky legs look like buzz lightyear's legs and that loud steam punk stomp sound they make while walking kinda takes always the element of surprise as you could year them partially a mile off. Also I never really liked the voice FX they gave the RDT cybermen either they kinda sound like that machine Steven Hawkins used to speak with gone faulty. ... Personally I think a deep pitch voice like the 80s cybermen mixed with a synthesized voice effect like the moonbase and Tomb cybermen would have suit them more or modern cybermen in general

This is a weird, wonderful mess of a story. The parallel Earth's world building is fantastic, Mickey and the Doctor shine as great regular characters, the commentary on how the Cybermen fit into modern times is potent, the redesign themselves are great and Harper's direction is top tier. It isn't nearly as good as Spare Parts or World Enough and Time when it comes to Cyber origins but it's a explosive and fun 90 minute blockbuster in the middle of the weakest RTD season that effortlessly brought the Cybermen back.

We see in Father's Day, Rise of the Cybermen, and Army of Ghosts that he's especially irritated at events like this, events a Time Lord is supposed to maintain.
In Fires of Pompeii and The Haunting of Villa Diodati that the Doctor becomes hostile very quickly when faced with time altering events that go against their strong moral code.
In Series 3, it explains that its instinct to go against his morals when presented with such situations.
