      I really didn't give this story enough credit. It's such a fun ride even with all the cop-outs that Journey's End suffered from, and despite their defeat feeling like a deus ex machina, the Daleks felt like a really serious threat.
      That said, I did enjoy the story you're reviewing next... Heck, you enjoyed it so much you're reviewing it thrice!

    “For one shining moment, Donna Noble was the most important woman in the whole universe”
    “She still is! She’s my daughter!”
    “Then maybe you should tell her that sometimes”
    Honestly, that bit at the end always gets me. The doctor realises that Donna really believed she really was worthless. In his sadness and anger, he tells Sylvia to do this because he realises that Donna will now feel this way for the rest of her life.

    I have wonderful, vivid memories of this story. It's impossible, to this day, for me to view it completely objectively. I know it's a mess, I know the deus ex machina is awful, I know it represents and accentuates the faults of the RTD era but to me, this was the biggest, best and craziest thing that had ever happened to the show. My two favourite shows (DW and SJA) crossing over and battling Daleks, combining basically every aspect of the past 4 years into an orgy of excitement, made me so excited eleven years ago and I still find myself enjoying myself just thinking about it. Harper's outstanding direction, the epic Dalek music by Murray Gold, the sheer scale and ambition to rival Master Plan... I love this story, faults and all. The ridiculous, camp nature of Journey's End is partially WHY I love it TBH. It's not one of my favourite stories, but it's one of the stories I remember the most and one I still consider quite special to me.

    I honestly recommend reading the segments from The Writer’s Tale about these episodes. It’s just... sheer chaos. Schedules all over the place, major sequences being cut (Davros’s origin, the assassination of the Prime Minister, HUGE monster cameos at the Shadow Proclamation), even the ending was famously reshot. Before Journey’s End was given an extra thirty minutes, RTD was really struggling over what to cut out; interesting you noted that scene with Sarah and Davros, as that was nearly cut for time, and it almost broke his heart. It’s a miracle this whole thing turned out as well as it did.
    It’s hard for me to be critical of this one though, as I was ten at the time, which is the perfect age to be watching this show. This universe felt so massive at the time, and I couldn’t feel more grateful for it. I would love it to feel this big again someday.
    Also, I nearly wet myself at the “friends we made along the way” gag, nice job.

      @kaledmasterme 4 роки тому +5

      @@SoundsSarcastic234 I'd accept this except for the whole "dimension cannon just so I can come back" thing and the constant never ending obsession. Too clingy and it's not all about the universe ending at that point. She literally joined alt Torchwood and directed their research into what should be an impossibility sans timelords and universe ending events, just so she could (as trilbee puts it) abandon her family again.

    • @SoundsSarcastic234
      @SoundsSarcastic234 4 роки тому +9

      kaledmasterme
      Completely understand where you’re coming from and it’s 100% fine to have that interpretation.
      However, I don’t view it that way. For one thing, Rose’s decision to “abandon her family” I see not as selfish, but incredibly selfless. I mean think about it: Rose is given her father back; the one thing that she places above her relationship with the Doctor and, of course, her mum and Mickey (yes, Rose does actually care about Mickey). She could have it all ... except that would mean the Doctor would be left on his own, and he has made it clear he will never settle down. So, Rose denies herself the life she, deep down, really wants just so the Doctor won’t be alone. I don’t care what you say, that is noble.
      Also, it’s shown Rose can talk to the alt Torchwood, though you could argue that’s because of the walls of the universes being weak. But even then it’s indicated when Rose and Jackie meet that they did have a talk, and Rose evidently won it. It’s just because Jackie is Jackie and Mickey is Mickey that they end up following her. So it wasn’t like Rose vanished without a word.
      Plus, “clingy” that implies that it’s unwanted and unusual. And that clearly isn’t the case with the Doctor. Also it’s a massive overstatement on Rose’s character. She honestly isn’t that clingy.
      That was long af. Sorry, got carried away. In the end, this is just a friendly debate about the show we both love.

      @@kaledmasterme It might have been garbled dialogue but it does sound like she was just building it to come back despite the Doctor telling her it could destroy both worlds. Might be based on Lyra and Will but they realised it would be bad for the worlds.

    small thing, but when rose says "I was here first", how does she know that? what makes her think that she came first. From the fact that school reunion happened, Rose is clearly aware that the Doctor has had previous companions and I highly doubt that she remembers all of them. So why does she say she was the earlier one when she has no possible way of knowing that?

      True. For all Rose knew, Martha could have been there first. The only hint is that Captain Jack recognized Martha, which implies Martha came after Rose as both Rose and the Doctor met Captain Jack together. But that's a lot to process in a moment and the nature of time-traveling makes any thing uncertain.

    7:42 I think that their guns is the least of Torchwood's issues.
    12:24 I'm surprised that the Doctor never told Rose about that at any point offscreen before the events of Doomsday, especially how in that episode she tells Dalek Sec that she was the one to destroy the Dalek Emperor by looking into the heart of the TARDIS. Also related to the huge amount of continuity in these episodes (which I really like after binging through Torchwood) is how Jack says "Martha Jones, voice of a nightingale." before the Daleks are revealed as a reference to how he introduced her when she first appeared in Torchwood season 2.

    No matter what I or anyone else thinks about the episodes as a whole, that Dalek reveal (whilst hardly a shock because of poorly-made teasers for the episode) was still the most intimidating and scary Dalek reveal ever. The reactions from Sarah Jane and Captain Jack were spine-tingling. Also I know it wasn't shown in these episodes but the Dalek not being able to kill Adelaide Brooke because of the fixed point in time stuff was actually an interesting scene.

    This for me is by far my favourite episode of the RTD era it is just amazing so many things I love about this episode and yes it's not the strongest 2 parter of the New who era it is still a great piece of nostalgia for my heart because I remember a younger me in 2008 watching this with my dad and loving it so much. I love how it brings all the companions back from previous series and them all helping each other to stop an evil threat that threatens reality itself. Love all the character appearances in this two parter such as the Sarah Jane adventures crew loved that as I used to watch it when I was a kid and the torchwood crew also watched some of it with my dad my favourites being Gwen ianto and jack. The ending with the tardis crew pulling the earth back to its home with the song of freedom playing in the background pulls at my heart strings every time this was a perfect way to end season 4 arguably still the best time of Tennant' s era as the doctor. I even don't really mind rose in this story line I mean I still hate how she of Martha but she isn't as bad as she was in series 2. I cry every time I watch this Because we have to say goodbye to Donna who is my favourite companion of the 10th doctors era. I also love julian bleach's performance as Davros in this story as I think he nails the character brilliantly being a mix of the molloy and Wisher Davroses. Overall I bloody love this episode and always will xx

    I actually liked the fact that the companions were all captured and everyone was made to look useless and defeated, even someone as smart as Luke or as powerful as Jack because at the same time it makes the Daleks look even more formidable and powerful. More often than not, the Daleks are made weak by plot devices, always getting defeated or outsmarted by regular humans which does a lot to diminish their image to the point where people tend to forget that even a regular Dalek drone is a super-genius capable of rivalling a timelord in terms of intellect and with the firepower to level a city and take over a planet on its own. So the companion's swift defeat and capture really bring back that terrifying side of The Daleks that we haven't quite seen since the episode titled "Dalek" and to an extent in "Doomsday".

    Love or hate Rose, she starts off as self-centered and spunky in series 1 and never loses those traits for 4 seasons and for that I respect her.

      Spunky, yes. Self-centred, no.
      Let’s not forget this is the same woman who gave the Doctor, a man she’d just met, permission to fire a missile at her if it meant that her family and the rest of the world would be safe. Just saying.

    7:57 ...you don't find it satisfying that Rose is jealous of Martha for once? Russell literally wrote that exchange to acknowledges the feelings of you and other critics of Rose. I'd have thought that would have been the one scene of Rose which you appreciated.

    • @nightowl8477
      @nightowl8477 4 роки тому

      And I do agree about Rose's departure - she gets literally everything she wants. In fairness, perhaps Russell wants us to ask "why couldn't Donna have the same happy ending?" Perhaps he's acknowledging that Donna is in many ways...well I won't start an argument.

    Murray Gold's music really sells this story for me. This was the first story I decided to watch when I got the series 1-4 DVD box set. The music, and the characters' reactions to simply the words "Exterminate." really makes it feel hopeless. Imagine this story with ambient music and we didn't get those reactions, it wouldn't have the same impact. It would just feel like another cookie cutter Dalek tale.

    I LOVE this story. It's so epic. And I love seeing all the companion come together for one last adventure. And the end of Harriet's Jones's arc is wonderful. The Doctor was so wrong about her.
    I started Doctor Who catching the last few minutes of Silence in the Library, so this was one of the easier episodes I saw. And I was an adult by this point. But still, even then, when I didn't really know about many of these characters, I thought it was great, and it's only better with more knowledge. Sure it's got issues but I don't care.

    You know what? I appreciate this story a lot more than I did when I was younger. As an edgy teenager, I liked to scoff and laugh and go, "Ooh! this story is rubbish! Why would the Daleks put a control panel for all their casings in their dungeon?! Look at all the cop-outs! Nyeeehhh!"
    As an adult, though, I get the need for compromises. I get why Journey's End, as you say, buckles under its own weight. It's trying to be closure for four seasons and four years of storytelling and roughly a dozen characters are all competing for screen time and relevance. The build up of The Stolen Earth is fantastic and truly shows the Daleks at their most terrifying as they almost effortlessly destroy Earth's defenses and enslave the populace. Davros is fun and has a lot of presence without stealing the spotlight for the Daleks. Dalek Caan's conclusion feels like a fitting end to the Cult of Skaro as he too comes to a similar but not identical realization to Dalek Sec. Each of the main characters, the ones who originated on Doctor Who, has at least one fun and memorable moment. Even characters like Rose whom I don't care for come to what feels like a fitting end. It's a solid story, and it would be the last time until over a decade later that the Daleks were truly depicted as a serious threat to the universe.

    Whilst I get your point about Davros’s moral victory over the Doctor, that’s the viewers’ perspective. In same way that insulting someone’s friends and family hurts, true or not from the Doctor’s POV it hurts to contemplate the idea. Davros claiming the victory is merely rubbing salt in the wound.

    I suspect Davros is not claiming moral victory, mearly more arguing that he and the doctor are not so different. Davros is evil because he created a race of murderers, Davros is arguing that the Doctor is similar. He's wrong, like you said, but he knows it will affect the doctor and Davros' belief is that his race of Daleks are the same, acting in self-defence because they must dominate or die. Murderer would be the doctor's word and Davros is using it.

    Personally might have been better if the warp star was used to destroy the Daleks. Then it would have felt less like dead weight. Or Double-Doctor died defeating the Daleks. Still glad they cut out the grow your own TARDIS, as that would have been a bit much and I personally feel cheapens the TARDIS a bit to say u can just grow one in a few years.

    Could be wrong but in the episode Dalek the doctor and rose travel to 2012 where the Daleks species is unidentified and is named metaltron how did Van Statton not recognize them since they invaded earth in 2006 in doomsday and 2008 in the stolen earth/ journeys end, the only possible solution is that the planets memory was altered in the same way as amy pond in season 5 however as far as I’m aware it was only her who’s memory was altered, could be wrong please respond if you have any evidence to cover up this plot hole

    14:41- it's my favourite villain speech, but it does kinda annoy me how the actor has to really stretch his prosthetic to get some emotion through. It's great acting and a great prosthetic, but I might have preferred a happy medium so he could have gotten even more out of the monologue.

    About the Rose thing I agree Rose could be a little self centered but she still risked her life over and over again to save the planet and the doctor. She was also really compassionate and if it weren't for her warning Donna in turn left the earth would have been destroyed by the Daleks. You are entitled to your opinions of course but I feel like at this point people just look for reasons to hate her.
