@ixbleedxfire This video was made using a Whirlpool dryer. We do not have videos made for every style appliance made, but we are working on the most popular styles. If you need help please check out our RepairHelp section of our website (Repairclinic com) or email the RepairGuru from our site.
Please note: It is counter intuitive that the belt DOES NOT go in the groove in the drum. You'd think that it does, but it does not. Took me ruining a new belt to figure this out. Examine the wear mark from the old belt on the drum. As installed, the belt rides the drum just forward (towards the door) of the groove in order for it to not bind up on the pulley system. I feel that it is easier to get it all together with the belt in the drum groove, and then once everything is bolted and back in place, rotate the drum by hand clockwise and pull the belt out of the groove toward you with your fingers as you turn it, and it will align properly. This is important!
Other than this important detail, great video that helped me fix my dryer.
Absolutely true - that narrow grove at the rear of the drum is NOT where the belt rides. It rides just forward as Chris Smay describes - you should be able to see the mark of the belt on the drum surface. Thanks, Mr. Smay - saved me some ( not all ;-) ) frustration.

Thank you too for the great video.
But, interestingly enough, I am having the same problem.
The belt is touching the belt on the motor pulley. This is stopping the drum from turning due to the opposite movement of friction between the two.
It is installed just as the video outlines with the grooved side on the motor pulley and the flat side on the idle pulley. The video shows about 1 inch clearance between the belt returning from the idle pulley to the drum and the motor pulley.
Thank you! This helped me a lot. One thing I did a little differently that helped me: when threading the belt between the pulleys, I looped it around the small pulley first, and then while pushing the large pulley worked the belt around that. My dryer has a removable panel on the back that gave access to this, not mentioned in the video.
Thanks for the comment. I could not get it. I tried and tried for 2 hours, lol. Went in through the back and got it on the second try!! :)
great video!! However, do yourself a favor and remove the back access panel. It is about 8" square, four screws, and gives you clear access to the motor and tension assembly. Very easy job. Thanks R C
Thanks for the tip!
This is critical. The video is reversed to what I see from the front. Why don’t you change your video instead of pretending that your video was perfect the way it was? These diy videos should be idiot proof and I don’t mean that to be an insult to all of us who will probably only change a belt on a dryer once in a lifetime. KISS principle. Don’t leave room for error of interpretation.
Sounds like the motor switch is stuck. I would try and turn the drum by hand both ways and see if it turns . If you can’t turn the drum you will need to take the drum out again and see if the motor turns freely without the belt on. Check the wires on the motor to see if they are on correctly and to make sure one didn't fall off when you replaced the motor.
This dryer is model DE412. If you have the same model, the pulley should be in the same position as the one in this video.
This video was helpful. I have a couple suggestions. First, you failed to mention that once the front bulkhead was removed, the drum was free floating and not attached to anything including the back. Secondly as was mentioned elsewhere, it is much easier to loop the belt through the tensioner with the back access panel removed.
I would suggest using the repair help section of our website (link in the description). We have model and part specific repair help that will show you other parts that may be going bad. I hope this helps!
One more thought. It is important to note that the belt does not go in the groove of the drum, but rather should be 2-3 inches in front of the groove on the flat part of the drum.
Happy to help!
Thanks for the comment! The belt should go on the drum itself. If you put the belt on the drum and pulleys and then rotate the drum, the belt will align itself.
Thanks so much for the video! The instructions were easy to follow and worked perfectly. The belt cost me $6.71 on Amazon. What an inexpensive fix!
Jane Sederstrom We're glad you found the video helpful. Next time you need replacement parts, please consider www.repairclinic.com.
There are a few different things you can check. The belt fraying, the idler pulley or the rollers can be at fault. Check them all for damages.
I would recommend using the repair help section of our website (link in the description). If you enter your model number there you'll have access to part, model, and symptom specific repair help.
Did you loop the belt around the idler pulley and the motor shaft?
For a belt replacement the replacement should still be about the same.
We're sorry you had trouble with the repair.
Great video. All told, once I had the new belt, fixing it took around an hour. I really appreciate this. It would have take longer to call a repairman, wait around and listen to the cost estimate etc. thanks so much
If the belt is removed, shouldn't the wheels spin quickly? I had a broken belt, but after replacing it, the pulley/wheel assembly just barely turns at all. It seems odd that both the motor would have gone out at precisely the same time the belt broke, but I didn't make any other changes that would seem to cause the super slow-motion revolution.
2 minutes and 40 seconds? Sure, if you can expertly edit a video. Where is the part about the drum rocking back and forth like a teeter totter? Not possible to do by yourself. You definitely need a 2nd person
That's awesome! Congrats to you on changing the belt and go dad!
So much easier if you take the time to pull the dryer away from the wall and remove the small access panel that allows you to see the pulley area. Do not... DO NOT let the belt get into the groove in the tumbler drum. The belt on on my Maytag must go around the smooth part of the drum, otherwise the belt will rub against itself at the motor pulley area.
stansdds Thanks for the tips!
This is what got me. If the drum tips forward, it the belt will get in the little channel on the drum. Hold the drum back flush and rotate with one hand, and tug the belt to the smooth part of the drum with the other.
Possibly. Looking to replace your dryer belt?
Thank you so much for making this video! I know its a Whirlpool but it the exact same as our Maytag Model # DE482. Thanks for saving us from buying a new dryer! This one is 26y/rs and going strong now :)
The dryer in the video looks like my dryer (DE412), but when I follow these instructions, the belt crosses over itself and likely won't last long at all. My pulleys seem to be in the reverse position from the ones in the video. Any suggestions?
Thank you for the comments about the groove. You saved me from ordering a belt that I assumed was stretched but really just needed to be pulled forward from the front to make more tension. I just replaced the plastic blower fan. In the process everything...drum kind of dropped and lost tension on the belt. Problem solved. Thanks. As a one time deal I had no idea.
We will! Your dryer will be up and running in no time!
That's great! Glad you caught it before something broke!
No problem! We're glad we could help you out!
I have a Maytag PYET244AYW and it looks nothing like this inside, I can't seem to find the proper video for it either...
Hello, I am writing from the turkey. Where can I find the maytag 312959 drying tire?
Forget the other videos. This is the only one you need to watch. I followed this exactly as stated and within 30 mins my dryer was back in action. Thank you so much.
+Emrold Gray Good work, glad we could help!
For this particular model of Maytag the drum actually isn’t attached to the back panel it’s free and will fall off. Also there is a back panel on the bottom right of the back of the dryer that you can take off to reattach the belt. Don’t do it from the front. Put the belt around the drum. Reseat the drum. Reattach the front panel then go around the back take off the small panel and attach it to the drive mechanism. So much easier.
Hey, I'm having a very difficult time keeping the belt from twisting onto wring side, as well as getting enough slack to slip over the smaller pulley, even with the belt in groove etc - belt keeps falling off the back end of the drum. I'm working in it through the back access panel. Any tips/ideas you might wish to share would be greatly appreciated! :)
Great instructional video. Does not stress the fact that you are working blind with the pulley & belt
I received the correct replacement belt in the mail but was did not have enough slack to get the belt around the pulleys using the instructions from the video.
I was finally able to complete the job but only after channeling my inner MacGyver. Everyone says line up the belt on the drum where the old wear mark is. That's true but in my case only after installation around the pulleys is complete. In my case the belt was too tight to get around the pulleys when the new belt was in correct position therefor i found a concave groove (you can also make out the *convex* effect of the groove on the *inside* of the drum in this video and there is also a 2nd identical groove closer to the front edge of the drum) on the exterior of the drum that's about 0.25" deep that's only about 0.50" further towards the back of the drum from the wear mark. By temporarily looping the belt down in that drum groove it gave me just the amount of slack i needed to install the belt quite easily. Then it took just a little muscle to stretch the belt back into its proper position, but the transition from the groove back to the wear mark is smooth and graduated so it wasn't that difficult to slide it back in place. If you want to edit in a notation about this into the video, i'm sure it would help a lot of people before they run into the same problem.
fonduemonkey actually now i'm starting to wonder about something ,,, i wonder if the belt is supposed to stay down in that groove on the drum permanently. The belt-wear-marks about 0.50" away from the groove may be due to someone installing the belt incorrectly in the past. My Maytag is model#DG4910 ser#250922 BZ. If anyone can answer that for me i would be grateful. At this point the drum is a little tuff to spin by hand.
fonduemonkey But seems to work fine at least for now after just installing the new belt.
fonduemonkey Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome. Thank YOU. I had another question about this model in particular ,,, should the belt stay down in that groove? I'm asking because on mine (Maytag DG4910) the wear mark from the original belt is about 0.5" closer to the door from the groove.
fonduemonkey You are correct the belt goes just forward of the groove in the dryer drum.
You're welcome! Thanks for the sub!
No problem!
Excellent tutorial, thank you! +1 for removing the rear louvered panel; mine's a DE608, and VERY difficult to reach the pulley from the front.
Mojo Bone We're glad we could help!
their seems to be a gap the belt wanted to go in on the drum but it seemed like the belt had to much slack so i pulled out drum found belt marks and put it their and it seems to of done the trick thanks i will like the video
No problem!
No problem!
We're glad we could help!
Thank you so much. This video just saved me some headaches and labor cost.
Glad to help!
November 2022 and it still does the job. Merci Beaucoup pour l'excellente aide
im confused. i watched a few other videos where they but the ribs on the inside.
Great video and not too complicated :).
Thanks! This helped me a lot. I couldn't figure out how to open that darn thing until I saw this video.
Thank you! I'm from Florida and visiting my Mom in Pennsylvania for the month of December for the Holiday's. After three travel days and two days visiting needed to do a load of laundry. Put cloths in dryer and after an hour they were still wet!!!! Didn't know exactly how to tell Mom that I just killed her dryer. Anyway, found your video and the dryer came apart just as you described. Got a new belt at a local appliance store and hour and a half later dryer fixed and good to go for the next couple years. Thank you very much for making this so easy to understand and my Mother happy! PS: The dryer was a Maytag and came apart exactly as your video.
@RepairClinic Alright, thanks very much.
Thank yo for the belt. Installed, started to work now it struggles to turn after a few minutes, could be the reason for the broken belt, what do you think is the reason. Many thanks
Great video, but it was much harder for me. I took off the back plate of the dryer too. Also, is the belt supposed to go in the groove near the back of the drum or is it supposed to go on the drum itself and not in the groove? It took me about an hour.
Okay, this was AWESOME! After watching several other UA-cam's, this one did the trick. Good diagram of belts and explanations. Good enough that two Misguided Good Girls could do it!
so I've replaced my dryer belt rollers and pulley but now when I put what was a full load in there before the belt spins around the drum untill I take some of the cloths out. I've verified the belt is placed exactly the same on the pulley as before and is the same exact length as the old belt, any suggestions?
I thought the groove near the back of the drum was for the belt, too. I'll take it apart again and check to see where the belt marks are. The video could be clearer on that point; otherwise it's great! thanks for the help.
This was great - thank you very much! My only comments are that I struggled visualizing that the view of the pulley is from the back of the dryer, and not the front. I also struggled because I was putting the belt in one of the grooves of the drum, rather than on the drum itself, which caused the belt to sit incorrectly. After three attempts, and 10+ views of the video, I finally got it - thanks again!
THANKS FOR YOUR GREAT HELP I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOUR ASSISTANCE MY DRYER IS NOT SPINNING ONLY HEAT ANS SOUND WHAT SHOULD I DO THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
I replaced the belt then screwed everything back on now when I try 2 start the dryer it just makes that loud buzzing sound that the dryer makes when its done running? ??
1 hour on my own, 5 minutes with this video. My first time getting the belt back on. My problem was understanding the pulley concept. I didn't even know there was one! No wonder my belt was slack... xD
Thanks for the video. I had to take off the back panel to see the pulley system (couldn't do it sight unseen like you did) but thanks to this video I was able to see how it was supposed to look and fix my own dryer. Thanks again!
Does this video apply to both electric and gas dryers? I have a Performa Gas Dryer. The appliance in the video seems to be electric.
Thank god for those icons. I could have been kilt. :/
I have model #PYG2300AWW. Is this the same belt I need?
No, you need this belt: www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Drive-Belt/341241/529597?modelNumber=PYG2300AWW
For future reference, if you enter your model number into our website it will show you all compatible parts. Have a great repair!
awesome video! My dryer (exact same) is so old yet this video is nice and new :)
THANK YOU Hero's, save me so much grief. THANK YOU!!
Thanks; but my model is LSE7804ACE, combo washer/dryer, and I reached this page by searching LSE7804ACE, but it's not my combo model and doesn't show how to open the dryer case to get to the parts.
jwilsonAvalon We have not yet completed repair help information for washer/dryer combo units. However, if you search your model number in our website search engine, you'll find replacement parts for your model and related how-to replacement videos that may be helpful to you.
Btw this video although not completely detailed enough to make my repair, the visual showing the pulleys was priceless and i couldn't have done it without it, especially considering i wouldn't have had a clue what the configuration was. I would have ended up having to take it outside and take the back off and it would have been one hell of a mess. So thank you very much for the video you save me a bunch of money and time,,, Thank again!!!
I just completed a "tune up" of my model DE482. (1988) Rollers, Axles, Belt, and after I got into it. I had tons of slippage on the squirrel fan. I corrected that, luckily, but taking the tension clip off, bending it to make it tighter, and re installed it along with a good cleaning. My advice for anyone who replaces a belt once every ten years, is get the belt generally in place, and then OPEN THE ACCESS DOOR in the back of the dryer. I spent an hour trying the way they demonstrated just working from the front by feel and imagination. I got real frustrated, and checked the back of the unit, and 4 steel screws and one panel removed. I had it wound around the motor and pulley in 5 minutes. Save yourself a little aggravation and use the rear access to attach the belts to the motor. Thanks Repair clinic for being a parts retailer and DIY demonstrator that gives mere mortals the confidence to take on the appliance word!!
+bshingledecker Thank you for sharing.
If you have a Maytag dryer model number LDE410 Series 01 then this is your video for installing the belt....thank you!
514hobbs We're happy to help!
Thanks for this video. I replaced my belt and it cost me $19.05 plus $8.97 shipping. The hardest part was placing the belt through the pulley. It ran the dryer about five loads since and quite proud of my accomplishment :o), however now I am starting to smell smoke. :o( I took the time to vacuum all the dust and lint when I replaced the belt. Does the pulley need adjusting?
The pulley Has a spring and does not need adjusting the spring keeps tension on the pulley to keep the belt tight. This is the only dryer that runs the belt with the rib side facing away from the drum. If you have the ribs facing the drum it might be causing the problem. If the smell is not a rubber smell there may have been some lint that got on the heater that is causing the smell.
Perfect, just what i needed at 1:08 for the stop motion on the tension-er!!!!
Thanks! I would never have figured this out without the help of the video!
This video is the only one I watched that showed the proper way to take the dryer apart. The other ones tell you to find the clip under the top panel and pop it open with a screw driver. This is not correct and along with a belt I have to buy 2 top clips.
sparky12991 Thank you.
Sweet video
I have serious knee problems that limited reaching the pulleys from the front. I think that if I can get help moving the machine away from the wall, I could change the belt by removing the back cover? Can it be done? Thanks!
+Liberty Wagon Unfortunately the front needs to come of to get the belt around the dryer drum on these dryers.
+RepairClinic.com Hello, thank you for your reply! I removed the front of the machine and slipped the belt over the drum. I removed an access panel on the back of the machine that directly covered the motor & pulley(s). It was very easy to thread the belt around the motor pulley and tensioner through the back opening. It's fixed and ran a long time getting caught up with all the loads of laundry! Thank you very much! Best wishes to you and yours! LW
thanks
Is this video for Maytag model DE313?
This is DE412, but it will probably be very similar.
the dryer belt is ribbed - does that side touch the drum? ie what is meant by flat side down?
For the dryer we are working on the belt goes flat side down against the drum. Thanks!
RepairClinic.com what about for a maytag hye3657ayw
On that Maytag/Magic Chef dryer the belt ribs do against the dryer drum.
Good in sight excellent.
Thank you for a great video. Well done.
This is a great tutorial thank you. I'm having trouble getting the belt onto the motor pulley itself. ( around min 1:34 or so) any suggestions?
***** It can be difficult when you cant see it. We took the back panel off to get that shot so you could remove the rear panel and have someone else co-pilot the installation.
***** This could work but not necessary and would be too much trouble. Check out the comment i just made above
***** i had the same problem ,,, read the comment i just made up above. I'm so stoke i figured it out
Thank you for this video, saved me a lot of money. :)
We're happy to help!
Great video thanks for the help.
'Dan The Man!'
Thank you so much! Subscribed!
Any idea what year these dryers were made?
Maytag used this design from 1976-2006, back when it was specifically their design (not Whirlpool, who bought out Maytag and uses their design from 2006-today, still slapping the "Maytag" name on the Whirlpool design). The dryer in the video is a 12 series made from 1985-1988.
thanks very helpful!
thanks!
Thanks for posting these great instructional videos! Replaced the plug and now the belt on an older Maytag because of them. Thank you so much!
Mine was a bugger new belt too tight...so pushed belt back so it dropped in groove, then threaded the idler and motor pulley easily, then when you rotate the drum the belt comes right back up on to the drum in the correct position...That is what worked for mine....I think they left that step out intentionally, why ? your guess is good as mine.
Joe Doer
THANK YOU, nice video.
Yep that was my problem thanks
