    Small "critique" but in the dp trainer battles that you timed, did you also use an intimidate Luxio, just like in tge side by side? If you did, intimidate added about a whopping 7 seconds before you're able to pick a move, there's a reason you're also told "don't have an ability that takes time" by shiny hunters and the such lol. Obviously if you didn't it doesn't matter, but just something I noticed in the side-by-side with dp and rb. Great video though :D

    Saying that Johto “wins” because it has the most type diversity is fine, I guess, but you’re taking away the massive element of an in-game play through. You don’t get access to half the Pokémon you mentioned until post game, and most routes in the game have Pidgey, Rattata, or their evolutions. And I would argue that Kanto does have better variety that Sinoh. It’s not ever close, to be honest. This isn’t me coming from a “Kanto is the best, everything else sucks” mindset, but the Pokémon variety is much more diverse than Sinoh from Route to Route, and there are more iconic Pokémon that people actually want to use.

      @@misterboxhead3045 One thing that is also worth considering in the Kanto Vs. Sinnoh pokedex depate is how easy each pokemon is to obtain. Since Sinnoh has a lot of really obnoxious and tedious ways to obtain a lot of its pokemon. There are 12 pokemon (7 without pre-evos) that are locked behind the Honey Trees, and there are 5 pokemon (3 without pre-evos) that are locked behind Great Marsh Daily RNG. There is Spiritomb which you need a second player + spend a lot of time, Milotic which is really tedious both to catch and evolve.
      In comparison the only somewhat hard to obtain Pokemon that Kanto has is Porygon, and the rare safary zone pokemon like Chansey, Tauros and Kangaskhan.

    Kanto might have less type variety, but it's litteraly the gen that started it all. They couldn't borrox pokemin from previous games like Sinnoh and all, because there wasn't any previous gen, and that alone should put it out of competition. Especially when the low dragon and ghost are easily explained by the fact that they were added late into development and a bunch of other pokemon had to be delayed to gold and silver because they couldn't put all the pokemon they came up with

      I grew up when red and blue came out. It was my first game so it have nostalgia for it. However any and all criticism about Kanto is now justified seeing as it’s been 26 years. 8 games and 755 more Pokémon later but Game Freak STILL focusses more on promoting and giving special abilities to the original Pokémon then anything that came after. Even overlooking the current gena Pokémon in favor of new abilities for them (mega evolutions and dun amazing are a clear example)
      If they are going to be so front and center then criticism about them being boring and type short are Totally justified.

      @@Jimbo55151 I never said you can't criticize gen 1. People make it out to be way more perfect than it was. Red and Blue was a buggy mess, with a weird AI, and typing that were added later in the game were really poorly implemented (dragon having no real dragon move, and ghost not only suffering from the same issue but also being innefective against psychic pokemon instead of effective).
      That said, you can't compare it to the other generations when it come to how many pokemon from each type there was, as every pokemon has to be a brand new one AND a bunch of pokemon that were initially planned for Red and Blue had to be put in Gold and Silver because they could simply not put as much pokemon as they wanted to in the old cartridge. Newer pokemon games not only don't have this issue, but they can borrow pokemon from all the previous games instead of recreating an entire dex (Gen 5 is the only exception). One thing I think should be factored in as well is that the 5 fire types in Sinnoh belong to only two evolutionary lines. If the 5 fire types were all completely unique pokemon, then the fact that there were only 5 of them wouldn't be an issue because they could each be distributed throughout the game to fulfill different roles. With that in mind, I think it would have served the statistics better for you to not include pokemon from the same evolutionary line in the counting of the pokemon's types due to the fact that it's almost like counting the same pokemon multiple times. Like saying Sinnoh only has 5 fire type pokemon can give the wrong impression that there are 5 unique pokemon that are all fire type.

  • @bradstrife2211
    @bradstrife2211 2 роки тому +50

    The major factor affecting the variety problem in DP isn't actually the numbers themselves, it's the distribution. Take a look at how many routes are overrun by Bidoof and Bibarel. Or how when you get to the Safari Zone you realise you have already caught everything interesting there except Marill. And how many Pokemon throughout the main playthrough are locked behind obnoxious things. In original DP Rotom, the Trophy Garden and the GBA inserts are all locked to post game so they doesn't to count for team building throughout. Most normal players can't expect to be able to get Spiritomb. With the time required for Honey Trees, Cherrim, Heracross, Vespiquen and Snorlax all take an unreasonable amount of effort to obtain and are just not fun to try to use in a playthrough. A bunch of the Pokemon flooding the types as well are new baby Pokemon which are just straight up useless (Budew can have some credit for being in one of the earliest routes, which is what baby Pokemon should be used for).

      Not to mention, four generations in, and Geodude, Zubat, and Tentacool are still treated as the most common encounters in particular environments (incidentally, those same three Pokemon also survived the initial gen3 purge, meaning gen3 had the same issue with them). They can come up with a new bird and rodent literally every generation, but god forbid they shake up the encounters for caves and "too much water" routes. Good thing we had a great HM slave. The pros tho I love the map especially how MT Cornet is connected to everything and is where you catch the legendaries which are my favorite. I mean, I never found the length of battles to be too annoying, but I do admit that the options for fire types are ridiculously low. Having a singular fire evolution line outside the regional starter was a terrible decision, and while Rapidash isn't terrible, you'd actually be better off seeking alternative type matchups for league members. Thankfully in Platinum, they greatly expanded the number of fire types you could get, including good pokemon like Houndoom, Flareon, and Magmortar.

    "Sinnoh: We Could Have Done Better" is a pretty good tagline for Diamond & Pearl. They're so low that Platinum could really only go up by just trying, and doubling the number of Fire-types helped immensely.
    That said, how did you treat version exclusives, trade evo.s, and Pokemon exclusive to the post game? Because Platinum made a lot of evolutionary items appear earlier.

    Not me watching this while playing diamond on my DS LMAO. Honestly my playthrough of diamond has been saved because of the fact that I traded myself eggs at the beginning of the game that had an eevee, vulpix, and gave myself a togepi from my finished save of soulsilver. So I actually had a good selection of pokemon. Grinding hasn't been a problem either since I also gave myself a lucky egg from the 6 I had gotten in soulsilver. Also I'm planning to use my diamond team in battle revolution and been connecting my pokedex to my pokemon ranch on my wii u. If it weren't for ALL of that I probably would've never started my playthrough of diamond! I just really love the connectivity between the ds and wii pokemon games its so fun :). There are Ice types like Glaceon and Weavile and the New evolutions of old pokemon couldn't be getted at any point before postgame or not even being possible to obtain them at any point. That makes worse the promid by stealing like 20 or 30 pokemon

    • @SwordOfBlueThunder
      @SwordOfBlueThunder 2 роки тому +2

      Also, this uses base forms as well. Which innately will buff up the numbers, but not as equally for every type. For example, a lot of water types are 2 or 3 stage, while there are some types like flying or normal that are only one stage.
      This essentially mitigates a numerical impact, because unless you are doing a challenge run, you wont use a base form in your final team. Meaning that Sinnoh's 5 fire types are still the two fully evolved ones, (Infernape or Rapidash). By buffing the numbers with the prevos, you crank up the differences between certain types in the different gens, when in reality some types are closer to past gens in fully evolved pokemon.
      A prime example is with Johto vs Kanto. Kanto has about 5-6 fully evolved bugs, while Johto not only have the kantonian ones, but another 6 fully evolved mons of its own to tack on. Meaning that in total of new experience (or using region specific mons. Ie only Johto pokemon in this case), you have the same amount of bug types, not a higher amount.

    About types diversity, i feel like all types aren't born equal, some types like normal types have very few values because they don't interact a lot to the overall weakness strength types interactions having only one weakness (fight type) one immunity (to ghost) one resistance against, (rock type) and one immunity against (ghost reciprocally) so having few normal isn't the worst thing but starter types are more important to not punish too much player not picking one starter type over the other (most generations kinda fails at this since water type is so over represented since forever but whatever).
    About the ghost type and dragon type being so rare in generation 1, i think it's kinda good, dragon type is supposed to be an amazing type so making it hard to get makes it even rewarding when you finally happen to find a minidraco on safari or buy it in the casino. Ghosts types are easier to find and even have a special dungeon dedicated to them making feel important to have your own ghastly, add to the fact they are one of only two psychic weaknesses a very powerful type you have good incentive to have one (sad that ghost types is broken and doesn't work on psychic and anyway licking is the only ghost attacks that deals scaling damage lol which isweak to begin with nevermind for all these good design choices x)) Still it's super redundant to fight the two same pokemon in the entire pokemon tower obviously.
    I wonder how double types affected also these types spreads on different region, kanto started this weird tradition of some almost mandatory double typings like ground/rock, plant/poison, ghost/poison, normal/flight, rendering completely useless some interaction between some of these types like poison strong against plant when the majority of plant types are already poison anyway, while making unique double types actually very rare. Obviously even if 1st gen type distribution was more spread out, there would be less diversity than next generations but they could have made a better job starting out with 30 water types and 20 ish normal types ouf of 151 x)

    Thank goodness that Platinum changed the number of Pokémon found in the regional Pokedex from 151 to 210, that's 60 more Pokémon DP could of had to begin with, and I think the reason they did it was because 2006 was Pokémon's 10th anniversary in Japan and you we gotta have the number 151 somewhere, so if that's the reason then your kinda setting the game up to fail in the Pokémon diversity department
    Also It's a shame that Platinum couldn't fix the slow speed of Sinnoh, although they did take steps to mitigate it like speeding up the surfing speed and speeding up the battles by a tiny bit, but still I don't think it's enough
    I suppose Sinnoh was kinda doomed from the beginning with the slow speed (Which is probably more so because of GameFreak's lack of experience with 3D games) and the lack of the diverse amount of Pokémon which is more of a design issue and so I can't give them any leeway on that
    Although the "faithful" Sinnoh remakes did fix the second problem due to having a different engine while the first problem had a Band-Aid solution applied to it by giving the player access to more Pokémon via the Great Underground but not updating the NPC's teams with them, the only changes that were made in terms of the NPC teams was the Gym Leader, Elite 4 and the Champion's teams by giving them EV trained Pokémon and completive strategies, which is good, but idk maybe dab a bit more difficulty to the rest of the non post-game game
    Sorry for going on a rant about the Sinnoh remakes so much when this video is about the original Diamond and Pearl, I guess I'll never get over how they butchered the Sinnoh remakes compared to past remakes and how good Platinum was (IMO, of course)

    ayo bro ... in the chart for the variety u gave sinnoh an L for poison without it having the least amount of poison types
    second thing is at least for the side by side comparison of battle speed u used an intimidate luxio wich costs additional seconds at the start of a battle wich doesnt seem very fair.
    what people seem to forget is that gen4 has the best soundtrack of all pokemon games and the (at least for me) best story with an really evil team (bombing an entire lake, enslaving pokemon, etc) and yes maybe the time is slower in battles but u see great animations wich take up time and hear awesome music. Also most fights arent over in a second anyways cuz most trainers have more than one pokemon anyways. gen 4 is in my opinion peak pokemon, from the world and pokemon design to the awesome sound track and fun story and of course the hardest champ fight there is.
    so yeah small criticism here: polish ur data and visuals since u made in both categories mistakes.

Abilitys are a big Part of the Game in D/P and you cant expect a Playthrough without using a single Ability. So if he had compared two battles without any Abilitys I think it would distort the Battle Time in some sort. People might think "Oh, the Battle Time is nearly the same". But when they play the Game they would realize that the Time is way longer thanks to the Abilitys.

    So as someone who had Pearl as the first DS game they ever owned, I think I should address some things: First off, there's the variety. D/P only seems lacking because it introduces the second least amount of Pokemon NOT counting the national dex, coming in at 107. However, counting them it comes in at 493, as it allows all the Pokemon from the previous gens. And if you're going to talk about variety, then you'd also need to include the newest 4 gens, as this guy even states that D/P were generally well received on release, and yet hated in modern times. You can't say they're hated now and put "Less variety" as one of your two issues when gen 6, one of the least liked gens, only had 72 additional Pokemon. Not to mention HG/SS and Platinum were of the same gen, and not a single word about them being hated. Speaking of which...
    Second, let's address what someone else said, which is that the reason is because Platinum exists. As someone who has played Platinum, it's a good game. Great game in fact. But gens 1-3 also had improved games, like Crystal for gen 2, and yet we don't hear "Oh man, Gold and Silver sucks because Crystal exists". Crystal wasn't even REMADE for gen 4 along with HG and SS (And considering Platinum wasn't remade along with BDSP, I'm beginning to see a pattern...). So no, a third reason D/P are seemingly disliked isn't due to Platinum, even despite Platinum's upgrades.
    Third, time. I'm just gonna reference what someone else said and put that you used a Luxio with intimidate, which got a crit and was super effective. NO DUH IT'LL BE LONGER IF YOU DO IT LIKE THAT. If you're trying to be fair, you need to record the same Pokemon doing the same move on the same Pokemon, not two different moves which could take two different times, with two different results. Also I'd like to point out there's an option to turn off animations in the settings, so the best way to check if it's slower would to also do a test with that without getting a crit or having it be super effective. And even if it's still slower, at least it'd be more accurate than whatever you tried doing here.
    At the end of the day, this video is massively flawed. Not only does he say that D/P is hated yet only gives two points on why (One of which doesn't even matter that much), both points are flawed in their own way, as one had two battles that wasn't even the same and made it look obvious that it was rigged against D/P, giving them an inflated time, and the other criticized the variety, despite at the time it was well-received meaning it needs to count all the gens from before it was "hated" (Meaning not just gens 1-3), or at the very least explain why D/P's variety is singled out among Platinum and HG/SS in terms of gen 4 games (And don't get me started about that line about them being "Among the worst in the series" when gen 6 exists). It's flawed, wasn't prepared well, and doesn't consider anything other than gens 1-3 and only D/P in gen 4. Do not take this video as fact, and thank you for reading.

      Platinum changed more than the other third versions did. It increased the awful regional Pokédex (something not done in the other third versions)and moved a gym forward (hearthome is now fought when you first arrive, cutting down the long arduous period where no gym battles occur), the games surfing and battle speed is faster, added new zones like the distortion world and greatly improved the concept of Cyrus and team galactic.
      Gen IV is beloved, but time has not been kind to diamond and pearl.

      @apricotluma Рік тому

      @@harold5337 I mean granted, Platinum DID change a lot of things and make some QoL improvements. However, despite this they shouldn't be hated for not being as good as Platinum, which was made as an upgrade and a combination of these two games. Referencing my second point, both the upgrade AND the original two games should be held in similar regard, even if the upgrade is held more above the other.
      Also funny you say that last sentence (Not just because of the box legendary of Diamond), because time has indeed not been kind to them in regards to the remakes, being much less liked than the originals.

    A way too simple Calculation:
    Red/Blue only have 15 Types in the Game. 15 Types for 150 Pokemon is basicially 10 Pokemon per Type.
    And in D/P we have 17 Types and still 150 Pokemon. Thats only 8 up to 9 Pokemon per Type. Of course the variety is flawed. There is no excuse that D/P only have 150 Pokemon in the base Pokedex. Platinum fixed that thankfully.

    A massive issue I have with DP is how unnecessarily small its dex is. Kanto is 151, obviously. Johto’s dex is technically 251, hence why it won from most of your data. Hoenn is exactly 200 I believe. Sinnoh, for some dumb Kanto-loving reason, is also 151, which puts an extreme dent on DP Pokémon choices. I still love those games. the music just slaps hard and as a kid I thought the way battles were handled was really immersive. I never cared about the time it took to go into battle. Yeah these games have flaws but I personally never thought the battle time to be one of them
    Edit: also you couldve spammed your buttons. It seems a bit like you were stretching out the time there to make your point stronger. Your point is true anyways but maybe that wouldve changed the validity of this criticism. also the variety test was passed still you said that this crticism holds up... dude what? You just decided that because you are dissapointed the didnt include as many old pokemon? I really dont understand where youre coming from. dislike for me

    With Johto having more pokemon variety it's no wonder I loved it more

    • @thohillesland
      @thohillesland Рік тому

      Johto having more variety is only somewhat true.... a good 30-50 of these Pokemon, which he counted in this discussion are locked to after you have beaten the league, all the Stone Evo mons can't be done before the post game in the originals, or you need to grind the pokeathlon in the remakes, and there are another 20 or so pokemon that you can't obtain before after the beating the 7. gym.
      This just means that Johto is just more in line with every other pokemon game from that era with its pokemon variety.

    Sinnoh is bloated and felt very empty to me. The ugly overworld artstyle was not better.
    I mean they did a better job with the Gen 2 remakes in terms of coloration.

    Saying Diamond is bad makes me like it more √(°=°)√
    and also you forgot to bulli the poketech, because in Diamond and Pearl it had a single botton to scroll apps forward which gets more tedious the more apps you get because you gotta scroll past 10+ apps to get to the first one

    Gen 4 was the only gen I played socially with trades and the underground and all that, so they do hold a special place in my heart, but Pokémon peaked in Johto and that’s undeniable, hasn’t been a good mainline game since Platinum.

      I guess it depends on the person. I do think gen 5 has some of the absolute best main series games, but I get everyone doesn't like the pokemon designs. For me sword and shield is the game with awful designs and is the game I think of when I look to understand why people don't like certain pokemon games.
