The Pokemon Abilities Lost To Time

- If there’s one word that can describe Pokemon as a whole, it’s evolution. Throughout the series, game mechanics have evolved a ton. New moves have been added, new types have been added, but arguably most important of all, abilities have been added. However, sadly, not all Pokemon abilities were created equally. While some have gone on to become staples, others have just spent their entire existence either in infamy or obscurity. Why have some Pokemon abilities become so hated? Why are they so forgotten? Well, let’s find out. These are the Pokemon abilities lost to time...

“Why would you need two abilities that do the exact same thing?” Delibird being able to have both Insomnia and Vital Spirit 😂
They just doomed to at pokemon to fail
Insomnia being the name of an ability in the first place. This and the defeatist being classified as abilities just seems wrong. Might as well make a signature ability called 'Useless" and give it Flareon or something just to be cruel.
Rivalry Haxorus actually saw legitimate play in competitive for a while. All the of the Genies (thundurus, landorus, tornadus) are locked to always be male and they were everywhere during that time. Always doing 25% more damage to some of the meta's biggest threats is pretty cool
On a similar note: Starters and Urshifu are all 7/8 Male as well, which also made Attract a niche play in Gen 8 since most players aren’t rolling for Females on them.
It will always be a niche play since people will start rolling for Female Urshifu if Attract got popular, but Attract saw play.
This video was very single player/ single battles focused, cuz I had the same thought about Gen 5 Hax VS Genies, which is a pretty memorable application only seen in VGC for an obscure Ability.
On a similar note, I'd like to add that Battery Charjabug and Power of Alchemy Alolan Muk do see some play, generally in early, limited Dex VGC and gimmick VGC teams respectively. I don't need to explain why Charjabug is used but for Alolan Muk, people will pair it alongside a Moody Smeargle. Muk spams Minimize, gains Moody when its teammate goes down and now you've got an untouchable wall.
These Abilities are far from meta, but I think people have played around with them enough to avoid obscurity. I feel they're closer to niche tools players looking to try something creative or different can potentially utilize.
Cute Charm Enamorus saw some relevance, too
Pokémon Showdown used to default the gender to male a while back, and it was eventually changed to be randomized when creating the set because some people would opt to run Rivalry to take advantage of the default setting.
I think Cacophony was scrapped because Game Freak decided to give the Whismur line Soundproof instead: doesn't make a lot of sense when, as you point out, Air Lock and Cloud Nine both exist. If Rayquaza could have Air Lock as its signature ability, the Whismur line could surely have kept Cacophony as their signature ability? If there's any forgettable ability, it's Stall, which is exclusive to Sableye, which will always use Prankster instead.
Alternatively, bring back Cacophony as a new ability that boosts the power of sound-based moves.
Yeah, not sure why they chose Cacophony out of every ability to scrap
I can only think it'd have to do with cacophony 1: not seeming applicable to many pokémon, and 2: the ones it can apply to work with soundproof where it'd still make sense.
That is, something like Vital Spirit and Insomnia both exist simply bc they give a different explanation for the same ability. Vital Spirit would sound like the pokémon is too wound up to sleep, while Insomnia implies they literally struggle to sleep even if they are tired. Same effect, different energy.
In your example, Air Lock was probably made for that reason as well. Does Rayquaza seem like a blissfully ignorant pokémon to you? Or does it seem more like it'd bend the air around it to it's will, and even stop the air's movement if it wanted to.
Idk the japanese word for cacophony or what connotation it has, but something about it clearly didn't sit right with the devs. To me, a loudred being soundproof makes sense enough anyways, especially if its 'ears' are actually speakers.
All we can do is assume and hypothesize. I mean the azure flute event was apparently too confusing, so what do we know for sure. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@PrinceTalonSabre Shoutout to Delibird for having both Insomnia and Vital Spirit. It has to stay awake all night to deliver christmas presents after all.
Stall would have been tolerable if it either boost defenses or double damage done, in exchange for always moving last.
My own theory for Cacophony is that its own flavor text is wrong as well. With a name like that, it would make more sense for it to BOOST the damage of sound moves than be immune to them.
Now that would have been a cool ability. Hyper Voice Exploud would be crazy
@@PokemonWoopboom burst is a sound type move, so would definitely still run boomburstwbut having a 140 power no drawback stab move just get a boost in attack sounds crazy on paper, but would just be awesome to give the mon a chance to shine a bit even though it's probably too late to save it from powercreep
they couldn't do something like that. Chatot's Chatter would become too overpowered
@@PokemonWoop punk rock exists mate
Punk Rock but affects the entire field
"This is the most forgotten ability."
"This is the most forgotten ability."
"This is the most ..."
Bro keeps forgetting
Funnily enough Power of Alchemy is actually used in Gen 9 VGC on ladder quite a bit in conjunction with a Moody Pokémon to cheese wins
Truly proof that lucifer lives amongst us
Stall, Sableye’s SIGNATURE ability, not on any other pokemon, arguably worse than the big 3 bad abilities of Truant, Defeatist, and Slow Start, that Sableye never uses because of Prankster is so obscure even the video about obscure and forgotten abilities didn’t cover it. Prayers to the goat Sableye 🙏
I was looking for stall. So obscure that people just assume that sableye's normal ability is prankster. And in gen 3 it's only ability was keen eye. I'd say that slow start is worse though because slow start also halves attack.
Stall should have had a benefit as trade-off for always going last. Doubling defenses might be nice, since Sableye can't really use Eviolite.
Or maybe make it always double whatever damage Sableye inflict, since it can't really hurt a fly if it wants to.
Stall isn’t even close to as bad as those abilities
Here’s a lost ability for you: Neuroforce
This ability only existed on Ultra Necrozma, not any of its other forms. And this form could only be obtained by letting Dusk Mane or Dawn Wings hold the Ultranecrozium Z.
As you’re probably aware, this form of Necrozma only existed in the Ultra games, and thus, the ability was only in those games too.
I wish Ultra Necrozma came back. Just change the name of "Ultranecrozmium Z" to something like "Radiant Shard" or "Necrozmium Crystal" and you can have the form without the Z Move.
Then again, they removed Primal Groudon and Kyogre in Gen 8 too, so I suppose they don't want any of the past "suepr forms" to come back (I said "past" because the new Origin forms of Dialga and Palkia still exists in Gen 9; I wonder what will happen to Terapagos?).
@@robertlupa8273 I’m guessing Ultra Necrozma was removed because Z-moves as a whole were removed. As for the Primals, they were removed cuz they were essentially just Mega’s. As for Terapagos, if Tera gets removed then I don’t think it’s Stellar form will be in future games :(
Dialga and Palkia’s Origin forms don’t actually make them stronger, their base stats are the same, while Primal’s are 100 points stronger than their base forms. I know the forms are super powerful in battle but it sucks that they’re not currently available 😔
@@SlimeonianI wish they would've worked Light that Burns the Sky/Ultra Necrozma into a move like with Kommo-O and Clangorous Soul
4:47 Fun fact you can still get toxic boost by hidden grotto and flare boost by dream radar
Dream Radar's no longer available, and I believe Drifloon can be found in a Hidden Grotto
@@TKnHappyNessDream Radar can be hacked in. It still exists. It's just locked in the eshop
Or if you already purchased it you can delete and still redownload it to start fresh. I’m currently working on getting all the hidden ability legendaries again before (inevitably) pokemon bank is no longer supported.
Fun fuct: rivalry haxorus was one of the best calls (and one of the best pokemon) of VGC 2011 because you just set it male and hit for boosted damage against all genies (which were the top mons of the format, and all male). This allowed two Italian players who got the call right to get 7th and 2nd at worlds (Francesco Pardini and Matteo Gini respectively) that year.
4:30 ZANGOOSE SLANDER WILL NOT BE TOLERATED
Nor drifblim slander, they're both great pokemons
Thank you
This feels like if Nick Crowley had a pokemon channel.
That's a really funny comparison.
I feel like Slow Start really should've been tweaked in the generations after its debut. It's FAR too strong of a nerf, especially when you consider how difficult Regigigas is to obtain in just about every game.
Yeah. Sadly it's only gotten worse since Regigigas isn't even that OP compared to other legendaries stat-wise
Hard agree. Removing Slow Start probably won't even matter that much what with the powercreep now.
@@PokemonWoopits not considered a restricted legendary and funny enough even with weezing suppressing the ability those turns still count. So at the very least both slaking and regigigas can be used competitively thanks to weezing being a bro.
As for the fan format singles well tough luck i guess. During and after gen 5 the way smogon handled the format has really brought it down and its issues get worse every generation since
Pure Power and Huge Power are another example of the same ability with different names for different pokemon.
Allegedly Huge and Pure Power actually function very slightly differently when the ability is stolen by another pokemon, with huge power only conferring a1.5x multiplier when stolen. I don’t know if this is true or why it happens if it is, but that’s a popular rumor.
Rivalry has, in certain formats, actually been a very good ability against certain Pokemon.
For example, Tornadus, Thundrus, and Landorus have all seen a fair bit of use in either of their forms. Since these three are ALWAYS male, Rivalry has sometimes been a decent counter to these three.
Slaking is literally one of the best Pokémon to use in a playthrough even with its ability it’s arguably too good since it has the raw stats to out speed and one shot whatevers in front of it. It even has the raw bulk to take multiple hits before going down. It’s actually super busted.
Agree but it basically make the playthrough more annoying because you're litterally interacting with the game half of the time
It's basically a Groudon that can only attack every other turn
In an AI simulation of every pokemon ever where the AI was terrible at taking advantage of the free turn (I.e. like in a playthrough) Slaking was top 10 of all time 🤣
Plus it can learn giga impact witch before STAB is 150 power and is truant turn counts for the recharge turn as well
As far as the power of alchemy goes: 'oh the use for that is so niche and it's on muk whos a bad pokemon LOL" are truly the words of a man who has never played against a minimize alolan muk w follow me/spore moody smeargle with flamigo/psych up user(s) in the back. It's a troll strategy that is surprisingly simple to pull off that will ruin your day to play against if you don't have specific tech to counter it and even then you have to play meticulously until muk is ko'd and its one of the only if not *the only* true 'stall' archetype teams used in vgc regularly
From my experience atleast in single player, Archeop's Defeatist barely even matter since the thing is fast on top of hitting hard both physical and special with great coverage.
The Marenie line should have swapped its signature ability with the Salandit line’s signature (at the time) Corrosion ability. Salazzle is a glass cannon attacker that doesn’t really have time to try to poison enemies itself would definitely prefer the offensive nature of Merciless with some Toxic Spikes support. Toxapex, on the other hand, would likely at least consider Corrosion for the ability to poison all mons regardless of type.
Yeah, it's really weird how they gave a stall Pokemon an offensive ability
Eviolite Charabug was actually used in doubles competitive to support special powerhouses allowing them to not needto use choice specs
Gonna pitch my two cents about Cacophony.
It was removed early in development, and in the finished game we have Soundproof. So, my theory is that Cacophony is the wip for Soundproof, which was renamed later when it was finished, but left as Cacophony in its wip data.
Interesting theory
"charjabug isn't well known" charjabug was niche in gen 7 vgc, and also afaik is pretty solid in pokemon go of all things, but tbf I have no idea how pokemon go's metagame works
Honorable mentions: Propeller Tail and Stalwart for Barraskewda and Duraludon/Archaludon. Both abilities prevent moves from being redirected, but literally no one uses them
On a side note, even if the ability kind of sucks Floatzel should get Propeller Tail as an ability. It only has Swift Swim and Water Veil(Hidden)
Because they have way better ones
Let’s not even talk about Normalize Delcatty
Stalwart duraludon is the best duraludon set in VGC and propeller tail had a niche in VGC too (admittedly swift swim was better)
@@nerdyfalco408 but u wouldn't use duraloudon u would use stamina archeloudon
@@Ze_CarrotDuraludon was used in Gen 8 VGC where it didn't have an evolution.
Slow start could work if it just puts you at -2 -2 on switch in and you gain +1 +1 every turn until turn you are +2 +2. It doesn’t make you maxed out, but it does allow for an actual boost beyond base stats so it’s worth something. For players of the format I would never touch you could also make a strategy around haze on the first turn to speed up the process.
I just love how horror-comforting your edits feel!
You should have mentioned Rivalry Haxorus was meta during VGC 2011 because the legendary genies were all male.
This is the best channel on UA-cam. Interesting facts about pokemon interspersed with an attempt to make pokemon into a philosophical and existentially deep topic that makes me laugh harder than anything. Subbed
Lovely comfy and informative video as always!
I think the reason abilities like Defeatist, Truant and the like exist is solely for those abilities to be swapped to the opponent via the move Skill Swap. I dont know if Skill swap is a Gen 3 or Gen 4 move but it would make sense seeing as how Double Battles existed during Gen 3. The devs prolly wanted to put a spin on how abilities can be used in a strategic manner. If were gonna introduce abilities in gen 3, then lets make it a battle mechanic that players can think outside the box for
There’s actually a creative way to circumvent Truant. Lead with a Prankster Grafaiai alongside Slaking and use Doodle to overwrite Truant with a better ability and you’re golden! I’ve used it myself on Showdown, and it didn’t really make that much of a difference because my opponent still trounced me, but it’s still a really smart play.
Just use Neutralizing Gas Weezing during doubles
It's a nice gimmick but if you use a pokemon almost solely to suppress the truant ability and thus only take half a pokemon with you for that purpose you need your slacking to do the work of at least 1.5 if not 2 pokemon on it's own.
Which for as good as slacking is, it doesn't really 2 vs 1 stuff, especially with the Gen 9 power creep
@@tomrejor4842I’ve been of the opinion that Grafaiai has been slept on in general: Prankster Taunt, Doodle to copy incredible abilities like Unseen Fist and the Ruin abilities, and a decently powerful Gunk Shot. Still a gimmick to team up with Slaking and Regigigas, but not totally a dead team slot.
The AI in Emerald will actually often run Slaking alongside something like Blissey with skill swap. And then if you're not fast enough, she'll use skill swap to force YOU to become truant. It's a pretty clever play for early gen AI
Waiting for the day some random legend wins Nationals with PoA Grimer, surviving a would-be-fatal EQ, thanks to gaining their fallen partner's levitate ability the previous turn. Would be the clutch of all time.

I can explain this!
In the ant kingdom, there is a theory called the 20-60-20 rule where 20% are diligent, 60% are ordinary and 20% are lazy.
The 20% of lazy ants are sinply loafing around because thats how actual ants are.
It's a nifty little insect tidbit.
I just got an idea for an ability.
Wind up: A Pokémon that has this ability will increase the next attack (physical or special) by 50% damage if the pokemon does not attack in any given turn, like when a status move was used, so being affected by paralysis or sleep will charge your attack move by 50% the next time you attack.
This move is mostly learned by walls and tanks, so they can rest, protect or substitute and attack by 50% extra the next turn, this percentage cannot be stacked by sleeping or being paralyzed many turns.
How does it sound guys?
This interesting and sounds similar to the move Stomping Tantrum.
But it would have to be carefully balanced because a sweeper could get that huge boost after its setup move. Swords Dance with this ability is effectively a temporary +3 Attack.
Please buff Illuminate one day… 😢
Also Flare Boost would be such a great addition to other Mon, a very sad story for a pretty nice Ability like this.
I wish Illuminate could lower accuracy on foes' moves but that'd be broken.
@@pariahdark1892 maybe make dark type moves weaker or something
Illuminate was buffed to prevent accuracy drops in s/v
@@unhappyninetales That's it? We already have Keen Eye for that.
@@pariahdark1892 yeah, it's a pretty underwhelming buff imo, there was a lot that could be done with it...
Power of Alchemy is similar to Receiver on Passimian. And as for having two abilities that do the exact same thing, Insomnia and Vital Spirit
That is pretty neat info, I didn't know Cacophony was still around.
Yeah, pretty crazy finding out that there is one instance of cacophony mentioned in a game
throw back to that time I was breeding IVs onto a Prankster Sableye in i wanna say gen 6 and a shiny hatched! Aaaand it had Stall, never been more disappointed in my life.
What's funny is that Slow Start was the only ability to be kept in Legends Arceus. Well, Cherrim also kind of, it keeps the swapping forms in sunlight thing but instead of providing a boost in sunlight it just has higher base stats in sunlight form to compensate for not having Flower Gift. Big Regi still has Slow Start working as normal.
1. I missed Gengar Levitate
2. I wished Sceptile had a new hidden ability contrary
Yeah, but I guess that ground immunity was just too good on Gengar
I think one fun thing about playing MSG and PoGo is that you get exposed to very different pokemon. While charjabug is completely forgettable in the MSG, it’s currently one of the top PVP pokemon in PoGo (it was recently used on about 50% of teams at the recent world championships)
Good video! One forgotten ability I think of is klutz. Only on a couple mons - I haven’t seen it since gen 4 \ gen 5 tbh
Great video! The only one that I was unable to get was power of alchemy, forgot that one existed haha. Also you were close, gen 4 is best gen, but gen 5 is a close second.
This video gives me 'Lost media/creepy true crime' vibes
Good video though
Yes another video from Woop❤
Real
Great video! A lot of these I didn't even know existed like you said. Oddly enough, I did know about Grimer/Muk, since that was a fav of mine during that generation.
4:46 That is untrue! Black 2 and White 2 added these abilities back into the game if you catch those Pokemon in Hidden Grottos! They aren't lost to time, they are just EXTREMELY RARE!
Shout outs to Triage
(menacing Comfey noises)
I will say, I recently found a Let's Play of a Pokemon fangame called "Salt and Shadow". It's mostly Double Battles, and one of the bosses made *TERRIFYING* use of Alolan Muk's Power of Alchemy. A high level Alolan Muk with Power of Alchemy is sent out alongside a lower level Diggersby with Huge Power. Naturally, the Diggersby is likely to go down first. Which triggers Power of Alchemy. And then suddenly Alolan Muk has Huge Power.
Best part? To replace Diggersby... they send out Passimian. It has Receiver... so if you then take out the Alolan Muk next... Huge Power gets passed on to Passimian.
Gen 3 is the best one
In my opinion gen 3 has the best replayability because of how quick they are to beat
@@PokemonWoop I liked gen 5, but I really hated the hand-holding and being stopped every 2 minutes by your rivals.
For the sequel, you could cover Abilities that are inaccessible because their owners are not in recent games. Some examples are some of the -ate Abilities and Parental Bond, the latter being Mega Kangaskhan's unique Ability.
These aren't obscure, they are in fact notoriously strong, but then again, there aren't many Abilities that are truly obscure, unlike moves.
I like your editing style
I loved using battery with my charjabug in competitive back in december on SV. It was a fun gimmick that got some surprisingly good results. As long as I kept my charjabug around, it could be the deciding factor of whether I won or lost. And even at times it was Charjabug itself doing it all. But that required a very specific ruleset so maybe with the new set and with how Archaludon is being used, I might be able to bring the battery to help me hit hard with my special electric bridge. He may be forgettable and looks like a tiny bus but I'm sure going to ride it to glory once more lol
Something people really forget is that hidden abilities started as "Dream abilities", they were abilities the pokemon dreamed to have
I know its sorta the opposite of this video, but I was wondering if you were gonna include the "no special abiliry" found and gen 3. I find it interesting that it might have been possible that only some pokemon would get abilities while others wouldn't
Truant Durant is pretty good if you run Entrainment. Came across it back in Gen 8 Showdown days, and I fell in love.
Also, Slaking is an absolute joy to use in playthroughs. The main game isn't hard, so to lose a turn isn't the end of the world.
Merciless being forgettable is an odd take. Merciless Toxapex was a cornerstone of my team in my first playthrough of Pokémon Moon!
The thing that bothers me most about Cacophany is that it actually could be modified to be different from Soundproof very easily and in a way that even works in Gen 3! Just make it so that Cacophany renders all sound-based moves useless while Soundproof only protects the pokemon with the ability. This gives Cacophany added utility in Double Battles that Soundproof lacks.
Yeah, honestly they could've just reworked it to be more unique. Strange how it's the only scrapped ability ever
4:31 Toxic Boost Zangoose with Ice Punch and Facade melted everything in his way on my Black 2 run, i catched him in White 2 trough hidden grotto (spent almost two weeks) and then transfered to Black 2 to breed and have him in my team as soon i could make him learn Ice Punch
9:30 wait that can’t be right I literally had a whismur with cacophony in my Ruby playthrough (I didn’t keep it very long).
Also I’m general these abilities aren’t very obscure.
In HGSS you can trade an Abra for a female rivalry Machop in the Goldenrod Dept Store. Abra is only 100 coins at the game corner. Every single pokemon in Goldenrod gym is female, so this Machop basically solos the entire gym since it also resists rollout.
jokes on you, i will always use zangoose when its available. its one of my all time favorite mons with a fantastic shiny to boot. i predicted toxic boost for zangoose on accident before it got its hidden ability for rp flavour back in the day. i still think about it sometimes because its funny as hell
I feel like it would make more sense if instead of some Pokémon getting the short end of the stick with having an ability only useful in doubles every Pokémon had a singles and doubles ability
love the format of the video
Glad you enjoyed it :D
the most forgotten ability is any signature ability on a new gen pokemon that isn't immediately plopped in OU
I thought a good way to "fix" truant would be to force non attacking moves or it'll slack off (no forcing struggle with all attacking moves). It would probably have to be paired with moveset nerfs i.e. no protect/slack off but with the generational power creep I think he would be fine now
I have THE: forgotten ability here. I've been scrolling through the comments for a while, and I haven't even seen it mentioned: Galvanize.
It's signature to the Alolan Geodude line- an already very forgettable pokemon line, and to make it worse, it's a hidden ability.
It's effect is actually rather good though, makes Normal moves Electric (remember that the line is Electric so it gets STAB), and gives a +20% power boost to sed converted moves.
Ready to go boom with a 300 BP Electric Explosion?
Yeah, definitely niche but super useful if used right
i love watching vgc stuff so i never expected to see Power of Alchemy and Battery being "forgotten"
That lv 5 slaking clip at the start though... if that's legit, that would have taken a lot of time with the pomeg berry trick to evolve that guy in its egg...
nope, it was against a level 2 poochyena, it was very much injected code to replace one of the starters with slaking
I just used the Universal Randomizer to get Slaking as a starter for the truant footage
@@tsukara gen 3 was my first game. Level 2 is the lowest you can find any pokémon in it, with poochyena being one of three that can have that level. Eggs hatch at level 5, even if you managed to evolve the pokémon in that egg with the pomeg berry trick. So it would have been possibly to get this result without cheats
Technically cacophony isn’t scrapped it just wasn’t assigned to anything. I’ve played many randomizers where the ability has popped up in gen 3
A few more for a potential part 2:
Stall: Signature ability of Sableye that means it always moves last in its priority bracket (like having a permanent Lagging Tail). Not quite as well known as the other hindering abilities but even more baffling as it's not like Sableye was good to begin with, although there are a couple of niche ways to turn this ability to your advantage
Grass Pelt: Only available as a hidden ability on the Gogoat line, increases Defense by 50% in Grassy Terrain. Insanely forgettable on multiple counts
Symbiosis: Passes your held item to an ally in Double/Triple Battles after they use theirs. Only available as a hidden ability on the Florges line and Oranguru, it's incredibly situational and uncommon
Long Reach: Only available as a hidden ability on the Decidueye line, and all it does is allow you to use contact moves without making contact. Again it's just so situational and not something you can build around, so why would you go out of your way to get a Long Reach Decidueye?
Neuroforce: I didn't even know what this did until I looked it up. Gives a 25% boost to super effective moves - basically like a permanent, slightly better Expert Belt. Only available on Ultra Necrozma
Propeller Tail/Stalwart: Two abilities from Gen VIII that prevent your moves being redirected. A lot of the most forgettable abilities tend to be doubles-exclusive
Mimicry: Galarian Stunfisk's signature ability that changes its type to match the Terrain. Completely forgot this existed
Will keep them in mind!
Kinda interesting how the pokemon who have Toxic/Flare Boost are in (Erratic for Zangoose) and (Fluctuating for Driftloon).
Hello woop thank you for learning me a new thing!
I wish Nintendo buffed Rivalry. I imagine a world were Rivalry has a use in Double Battles. If partnered with a Pokémon of the opposite gender, Rivalry will give an attack boost regardless of the enemies' gender.
Tbh i feel like the intended synergy wuth merciless is with Venoshock which doubles in power from 65 to 130 if the target is poisoned, with the guanateed crit it becomes a 195bp move, and with STAB it becomes a 292bp move, which makes up for Toxapexs' pitiful sp.attack stat
Yeah I suppose that could work since Toxapex can live a few hits before having to recover
Cacophony was in the game and still is in the game actually. If you use a Randomizer you’ll see it more often.
Excellent content! Keep up the good work 👏
4:25 imho you mentioned these abilities aren't useful in the playthrough, but we can't deduct points for that since these abilities are actually being used in pvp
Great video. I forgot all about half of these.
They certainly are forgotten abilities
Battery isn’t useless or forgettable at all. Charjabug is a great alternate to Stonjourner or Perrserker in raids. Muk is also a great support.
Nobody:
Woop: "Number 15, Burger Slowking foot ability"
There as a toxic boost zangoose in the hidden grottos of B2W2, so they are obtainable in game even without the dream world
Anyone whose played competitive knows that toxipex truly is merciless
Woop is hella underappreciated
Woop appreciates this comment
I love my Merciless Toxapex. You acting like no one knows it exists, meanwhile me running a Merciless Toxapex in my Alola Elite 4 team: 😢😢😢
That mon can go hard in casual play despite its low offensive stats, especially paired with moves like Venoshock (and Attract to add insult to injury).
Slaking can at least come in with a choice band, nuke something out of existence, then be switched out
I adore Rivalry for the worldbuilding. Of course some Pokémon would have extreme aggression spikes against competition while avoiding conflict with mates. Animals do that all the time.
Not even 30 seconds in and already an inaccuracy. Rockruff can have one of 4 abilities.
Wait, Drifbloon gets an ability called Flare Boost, which increases its Sp. Atk when burned? Like, when it's on fire?
Is that a joke about the HINDENBURG?
Bizarre signature abilities like Merciless are one of the big reasons why I enjoy play Pokemon Infinite Fusion. The ability to share this ability with even slightly more optimal stats by fusing Toxapex with something like a Gengar as really cool for optimizing a Pokemon's potential.
The introduction of the Ability Patch in gen 8's DLC definitely helps the accessibility of hidden abilities like Drifblim's Flare Boost, especially since you can access the Crown Tundra before the post-game even if your own Pokemon wouldn't be that strong for it. Just grind Dynamax Adventures for a few hours and you've got yourself the patch.
i used merciless mareanie in sun moon, its fun.
I'LL NEVER FORGET TOXIC BOOST ;0; Still holding out hope that they will buff that ability so my fave Zangoose will be useful in some way. It's still on my team every time I can and... it sorta trivializes the single player game once you can learn Facade... Lol.
Slaking is not “unusable” in even a casual play-through. You could beat the game with underleveled, unevolved Pokémon if you really want.
Can't believe some of y'all STILL want Gen 5 remakes after seeing what they did to Gen 4
Slaking with Hyperbeam is an absolute menace!!
Hilariously, I only knew that cacophony exists because I was doing an emerald randomizer and I caught a random Groupon that had Cacophany
I wonder why Toxic Boost even exists when Guts is just the same thing but better. Yeah, I get it, flavor, but I think Guts would've worked just fine in that aspect.
5:50 I think Sneasler could use Merciless too, even if the random effect on Dire Claw could screw it up. Then again, can you really call paralysis or sleep a "bad roll", even if it potentially decreases your damage output? :)
I kinda like this about Pokemon. They don't care if it is useful in the Meta. Game designers think it is cool, so they implement it.
How are Slow Start and Defeatist the same? They're literally opposites of each other. One makes you wait, the other makes you hurry
They both half your attack and speed, just on opposite fronts.
They both suck the same, just on different ways
By "same" I mainly meant that they serve similar purposes, being to hinder the Pokemon with the ability
They accomplish the same purpose with different mechanics
