Defender propshaft lubrication? Or Defender steering ball joint lubrication?
This is the third episode of our Defender maintenance series. about Defender steering lubrication and Defender driveline lubrication.
In this video we will show you how to lubricate the steering bars' ball joints and the propshafts of a Landrover Defender 2.4 or 2.2 TDCi Puma. If you own a TD5 or a TDi this operation is very similar.
Here's what you will need:
1x grease gun with a flexible hose
1x moly K48 grease cartridge
1x cloth

About Off-Track Family:
We are a family of 4 with 2 children. We are overlanding for years now on wild tracks in our Land Rover Defender 110.
Our expedition vehicle is a Land Rover Defender camper conversion. Some people say it’s more like a bug out vehicle but for us it’s the perfect 4wd off-road tourer with best 4x4 camping set-up.

Nous sommes une famille de 4 dont 2 enfants. Nous voyageons depuis des années sur les pistes dans notre Land Rover Defender 110.
Notre véhicule d’expédition est un Defender aménagé. Certains le décrivent plus comme un véhicule de survie mais pour nous c’est le parfait compromis d’aménagement 4x4 et tout-terrain pour le camping.
Nous avons acheté ce véhicule neuf en 2009 et sa motorisation est un TD4 2.4tdci Puma. Nous l’avons transformé jour après jour en un parfait tout terrain de camping 4x4 et il nous permet d’être autonomes lors d’un bivouac, d’un voyage 4x4 ou simplement lors d’un voyage en famille.
Nous adorons passer du temps dans la nature et explorer les pistes sauvages du monde entier en famille.

Universal joint and propshaft should have lithium (High Temp) grease I may be mistaken. Very useful video thank you
Thanks! The grease that we used in the video was specialy dedicated for this use but that's correct!
On further research Molly K48 is a lithium based grease, so correct grease 👍

J’ai graissé mes croisillons mais il y’en a un donc le coude m’empeche de bien mettre l’embout de la pompe a graisse. Resultat : impossible a graisser tout passe a coté...une idee? Certains meulent l’embout de leur pompe pour le rendre plus fin...sinon est ce que je peux essayer de visser ou devisser le bitoniau ?

Nous avons le même cas de figure sur le croisillon avant de l'arbre avant double croisillon. Pour nous le plus simple c'est de dévisser les 4 vis de l'arbre pour déposer l'avant et pouvoir le graisser proprement. C'est ce qu'on voit dans la vidéo. Par contre il faut deux clés anglaise. Ce n'est pas du métric mais de l'impérial.
Merci de votre réponse! Une autre solution trouvée sur defender2.net. Apparement soulever le coté conducteur ( du coup coté passager chez nous) je met le passage extrait If you jack it up from under the chassis, this then let's the axles hang down - you still need the tyres off the ground, and this gives max axle travel / drop which widens the gap at the side of the universal joint - you should then be able to get the grease gun in then.
Sometimes you can get into the joint from the side at around 2 to 3 o'clock if that makes sense.
A decent trolley jack and a block of wood under the chassis rail helps
Bon finalement suite et fin le plus simple est de meuler ou limer l'embout sur 2 faces opposées et ca fonctionne !

Really should wear gloves when handling grease, oils and other lubricants, guys especially don’t want to transfer any to a delicate area when you have to dash off for a pee halfway through the job. Easier to take a glove off than thoroughly clean your hands whilst doing the ‘ I really need a pee’ dance.

Il est prévu que je le face ces prochains jours, ainsi que mes niveaux d'huile. Le Def a passé la visite samedi avec presque zero defaut. (heureux le gars)
