linus tech tips a lot of times says bad things about devices if they don't pay them enough or just say nonsense too. I don't ever trust youtubers really. tho dave usually is trustable. also don't forget to read consumer reviews. a lot of models have common issues. I got an ux430ua once cause every review was good. the display died in a year. turns out it was VERY common with the model. lukcily I got a full refund but still something to keep in mind. I just got lucky to get a refund.
I'm in the market for a MB Pro since September 2017 and I waited and I waited and I waited because of reasons, but....I think now I can have a raliable machine for my work. Thank you Dave. Keep the good work!
@Swift Boiz I have to highly disagree on that. I'm a musician and a photographer and I need a SD card for both of my work fields. As a musician we tend to use audio recorders to record concerts to evaluate our own playing or just record a jam session to extract the best ideas. Yes, we could use our phones for that but the audio quality of a phone will never reach the same quality of a dedicated audio recorder especially in high volume situations. As photographer I have to disagree even more. I can tell you that all cameras have SD cards. ALL of them. Sony's flagship mirrorless camera the A7s III came out in February last year and it uses 2(!!!) SD cards. All professional grade Canon cameras use SD cards. Even their full frame mirrorless camera that came out last year uses SD cards. Given, they have wifi build into them but the purpose of that is not to transfer data from the camera to the computer but to trigger your camera with your phone. Don't forget videographers, same thing just moving pictures. Have you ever tried downloading a 30gb file? Photographers, Videographers and other creators that are in desperate need of the SD Card readers were turning away from the 2016 MBP's one big reason was the ports. Sara Dietschy, Chris Hau, Lizzie Pierce and many others. And those USB-C Magsafes. Never heard of an review that said those won't break after a few months of usage. Sorry for the rant but I've never seen such an uneducated statement...
guitarplayer1994 I get that an SD card reader might be super useful for you, but the vast majority of people don’t use one. Also I love the MagSafe on my 2012 but being able to plug in my laptop from either side would be more convenient. Just because swiftboy’s point didn’t meet your particular use case doesn’t mean it was uneducated
@Swift Boiz Well, it's all about convenience. Let's start with the dictaphones. First of all: I have studio microphones. USB microphones for any musician are utterly useless (don't want to go into the reasons here). I don't want to bring my laptop, my audiointerface, my microphone, my stand and cables to a concert when I AM ON STAGE performing, to review the performance afterwards. First convenience second: Somebody might steal it. Oh by the way, I'm in Europe: Not everybody has a car. Let's get to adapter things: Have you ever forgotten a toothbrush when you went traveling? It's about convenience. I don't want to carry around adapters all the time, at this price tag I want a machine that's a stand alone. USB-C I get behind it's the future, I get it. I even encourage it. But hell ... There's a reason why people call it the dongle book pro. I don't even necessarily have a problem with adapters: Get one for your monitor/TV/beamer/whatever and just leave on the cable, problem solved. SD card is a different thing man. I don't want to be carrying around 3000 cables to do basic work. And yes there are plenty of laptops to choose from, I still use my 2013 MBP and pray that it'll last as long as "it takes for the industry to adopt the latest and greatest ports". As I mentioned earlier a lot of creators moved away from Macbooks for that exact convenience. I don't know you or your field of expertise but you clearly haven't been in the fields of music, photography or videography.
I don’t know if this is stupid but is it any coincidence that Apple has started to listen to peoples criticisms about the design of their products after Jony Ive left? Just curious.
Like Saucy said, I doubt the whole blame on Ive thing since he was here for literal decades prior to the complaints rising up. I also feel like some of the issues people have exist only in their heads. Like the iPhone being too thin and not having enough battery, even though it's consistently gotten thicker since the iPhone 6.
AbuBakr Akram I agree, I just wanted to see because I thought about this for a while and the timing of it marches up. It's most likely just a coincidence.
Yeah it is true. It is a well known fact that Jony Ive left because he was increasingly irritated at the higher ups not being even near as involved in product design as Steve Jobs was. They couldn't entirely rely on Jony(he was super demotivated and not even in the office for most days of the week before leaving) anymore so they decided to do market research themselves. Still, Phil is still there so they didn't fuck it up.
Great review. Love watching your videos on here. Got mine on order but kept away from the i9 since I already have an iMac Pro 14x maxed out. Have gone for 64gb ram, 8gb video and 2tb storage since I’ll mainly be using it for audio and only some 4-8k A/V work.
The reason i like Daves videos is that he is not deliberately adding fluff to his videos to make it a 10 minute video so he can get more ad money. He is straight to the point and all of the content has actual meaning and is important.
I must say that the usb-c charging and intenal limitation is something i didn’t know about. Great Job on Reviews in your latest videos have improved way better in past few weeks.
I would love for something between the Mini and Pro would exist on the desktop side of things, something besides the iMac I mean, a small tower, with good but not necessarily crazy performance and easy to upgrade/expand.
The mac pro is upgradable but it's not a general consumer device at all. And i need the people that bring back the keyboard, who bring it some thickness and making it better for the same price...oh well it would have been hard to make it more expensive.
There ain't nobody that has upgradable hardware. NOBODY. I have looked and there is not one name brand that allows me to swap to the newest CPU, and the newest GPU. NOBODY, so I wish everyone would stop crying about his already since swapping the drive or adding a bit more RAM just will not give me the performance most that I can get with a CPU and GPU upgrade.
Thanks Dave. I have an early 2015 MBP. I need to upgrade because it is finally starting to run slow and have some issues. I'm glad you made this video & addressed Adobe CS as well. That is some programs I have been wanting other tech reviewers to mention on its performance and haven't heard much on it yet. Keep it up Dave! Thanks for being a reviewer that is solid and honest on their reviews.
Now this is something that can compete with the Microsoft Book 2 15 inch, before, the book blew the MBP out the water with the IO, and the thermals, and the keyboard, not to mention the detachable keyboard. Now they are finally in competition

“I’m glad they didn’t put an RTX or GTX in here because then it can’t be charged by 100W USB-C...it can’t be done” I’m typing this comment from an X1 Extreme Gen 2 with an i9 & GTX being charged by...you guessed it- a 100W USB-C
the argument is just BS by Dave. Of course a gtx2080 (or even lower) will burn through the battery in hours (or better minutes haha) but the thing can still be charged, EVEN with only a small 100W power brick on a plane! The battery will still drain if you use 100% cpu and gpu, but you hardly ever use full power on a plane. If you just use sub 100watt performance on a plane, you can perfectly use a different 100watt psu and it will charge nevertheless.
In all honesty I think Dave2D misspoke because the GTX 1650 max-q in your Thinkpad has a similar power envelope to the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M but is not as powerful.
Which GTX? A low end GTX is probably comparable to the AMD 5500M 8GB in performance. Dave's point is that a more POWERful GPU, by definition, can't run at full steam on Power Delivery standard because it maxes out at 100 watt of continuous supply. Charging a laptop battery and powering the device are also different concepts
Ryan Cowan Hear him at 3:06. “RTX or GTX ANYTHING inside here, it won’t work under the 100W USB-C limit”. That’s factually incorrect, since the 5500M is comparable or can outperform the GTX 1650 with the same power envelope. If they were closer to NVIDIA still, they would’ve used the 1650 (like they used the 750m in the 15” in the past).
they way you explained why they choose amd graphic rather than nvida is really satisfying. Might be not the full reason but at least one of them. thanks Dave!
@Dave Lee, did you try and hook it up to an external monitor? If you did that, you would notice that the GPU consumes many more watts than it should, and you can fry and egg on the macbook. No, the thermals have not been fixed! There are hundreds of complaints in the apple forums, reddit and macrumors.
This is a real review and not just another “tech reviewer” talking about specs already available in Apple’s website. Great job and very informative points given! Sub earned!
Is it possible that jony ive was holding apple back because he wanted everything to be visually appealing? Apple is actually listening with the new phones, ipads, and MacBooks since he left... They are going on the right track!
As the owner of an iPhone 11 Pro Max, I'm really not sure why people find this thing so revolutionary. It's fantastic, but it's extremely similar to the Xs Max. What changed? The battery? Really? Finally, I can have the best of both worlds, Mac and Windows, on one computer (without having to Hackintosh a PC).
The surface laptops are just easier to fix for Microsoft themselves as they use mostly custom parts inside the devices. It’s not like they are 2012 laptops that you can easily repair yourself with common parts if something broke.

3:05 Nvidia GPU are way more power efficient than anything AMD has to offer. The 1660 Ti MaxQ outperform the 5500m by a significant margin (10-25% depending on the power profile) at the same TDP. The only reason Apple doesn't use Nvidia GPU is because they still hold a grudge against Nvidia.

Now SD Card Reader and Magsafe please
Swift Boiz I wouldn’t bother arguing with him. The most creative thing he’s ever done is come up with the username guitarplayer lol.

OMGitsNICK i wouldn’t be surprised if apple are designing products years in advance. This was probably almost finalised before Ive left

Love your videos man. I really wish Apple would bring back upgradable hardware, they're on the right track with the keyboard at least.
The odds of that happening is slim to none
It's not possible to give upgradable laptop considering how slim it is. And all companies only offer upgradable ram now nothing else

“I’m glad they didn’t put an RTX or GTX in here because then it can’t be charged by 100W USB-C...it can’t be done”
I’m typing this comment from an X1 Extreme Gen 2 with an i9 & GTX being charged by...you guessed it- a 100W USB-C
the argument is just BS by Dave.
@gravis34 how is the battery life?
Do you have the 4k screen?
Also do you use Windows or Linux?
I want to buy it but I'm still hesitating

As the owner of an iPhone 11 Pro Max, I'm really not sure why people find this thing so revolutionary. It's fantastic, but it's extremely similar to the Xs Max.
What changed? The battery? Really? That's enough to make the world go crazy for it? And pretend that Apple wasn't making phones thicker since the iPhone 6?

@@lewsee5562 Perhaps its more in my head than in reality, but the whole vibe surrounding these iPhones is more than just celebratory. AbuBakr Akram because most people are wrong about the iPhone 11 Pro. They think its overrated, but its not especially if they start to use it on a daily basis. Its not a revolutionary smartphone by any means. But its a revolutionary product for Apple and their users. For one, Apple seem to start listening to their users when they included fast chargers, night mode photography, and batteries that last longer. Yep, engineered obsolescence is still an included feature of the Macbook lineup.
crookback don’t buy it. Then it’s the wrong product for you. If you open it up you will see there’s not much space for replaceable stuff. Soldering takes way less space. And they have to fit 64gb ram, 8tb ssd, cpu, gpu, 100wh battery and thermals in such thin device.
If you don’t need the thin device don’t get it. Im sorry apple doesn’t have an option that fits you.
