I bought my 8GB M1 MBA 4 years ago and i'm totally fine with it. I've bought it for 999€ discounted from 1299€ a few months after release and - games a part - is holding up REALLY well. It honestly feels like it's a 2024 device. Used basically everyday for productivity, gaming, casual use and i still have "all day battery life" and performance is honestly more than enough for what i do. Now i even get apple intelligence, which imo is a pretty big update; not quite groundbreaking but almost there.
We also bought an M1 Air because the M2 was much more expensive at that time and didn't have more base RAM. We added a magnetic USB cable, so there's kind of Magsafe. But prices for RAM upgrades are a joke. For 230€ you get 64GB DDR5 or even more DDR4. And before someone says that the RAM Apple uses is faster: For 230€ I can buy a GPU with 8GB. And for 460€, a PS5 with 16GB.
The AI based systems mean that the opposite will happen, all old tech with soldered on RAM and processors will be rendered obsolete by the power jump needed to run AI at full speed in a year or so.
I'm a Mac and PC user. I have a 16" MacBook Pro and a desktop PC I built. I'm SO GLAD the PC space has finally caught up with Macs in energy efficiency and, for the most part, hardware. I still think the trackpads mostly aren't nearly as good, but they at least went from unacceptable to decent. The landscape improved so much in the past couple years. I hope Apple feels the pressure. They just fixed the baseline RAM. Next they need to fix the baseline SSD and adopt OLED. I hope they also make their RAM and SSD upgrade prices less ridiculous, but let's be real, they won't do that.
My opinion... Unless you are a gamer you do not need the latest and greatest. Running my 6 yr old Thinkpad with Fedora and 32G of RAM and it does what I need it to do. This thing is a pleasure to work with and the keyboard is great.
Even as a gamer you do not need the latest and greatest. I’m still daily driving my 8yo laptop. My next upgrade won’t be new gen hardware either. Same with phones. My second hand Samsung s8 is still going strong.
Gamers would benefit way more using a desktop for way less and not having the constant over heating issues I get with all gaming laptops. They're fine for cold climates.

Having that dilemma right now. The worst part is that I cannot argue with him, since I know I wouldn't have taken a dGPU as a "gaming laptop" myself. 😐
As they should be! Gaming laptops are a giant scam anyways, these devices will : - Cost more for equal performance than their desktop counterparts - Not last as long as normal laptops due to the increased thermal stress, and more power hungry (usually non replaceable) components - Have poor battery performance due to said power hungry components - Look dumber - Be noisier du to more powerful fans. Personally if I had children, and if my children were to ask me for gaming laptops, I would first tell them all of the above with an annoying voice, and then : - Buy a refurbished business grade laptop for like 200 to 400$, which is the only good cost to quality option of the market in my opinion, on which I would maybe even put Linux to ensure maximum productivity (unless weird software is needed for their school) - Spend the remainder of my budget on a nice desktop gaming pc This would give me the added bonus as a parent that I could restrict the usage of the gaming rig without preventing work, if necessary. Not a perfect solution of course, there is still plenty of fun to be had on a business laptop if studies are boring enough, but nice to have the option.
@AZisk had his video get outdated right as the upload completed, and right around the time you got to the end of the playtime of the video. It was wild.

These new windows laptops are basically what m1 was when it first came out. Things should balance out as new versions of these windows machines come out with likely incremental updates like m2 and m3.
Absolutely not, are you kidding? They are more than competitive with the M4 Max chips, with way better price points. The Galaxy Book 4 Ultra with Intel Core Ultra 9, which is a 24 core CPU plus NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics??? (M4 max only promises max of 16 core CPU + integrated graphics 40 core max) This is an INSANE duo in terms of sheer processing power by windows - for $2999. 16 inch screen, this would be close to 4000$ on this year’s M4 Max MBP with similar specs. Plus 32 GB RAM + 1TB SSD included in base model. Competitive with M1?? Whaaat
@@aniketbilenia8740I agree with this, however, a lot of people who purchase these powerful, weighty machines intend to use them at desks or in bed. It might be comparable.. but that makes the Pro and regular GPU non competitive at all. We are talking about Nvidia here. Look up the specs. The Intel ultra 9 is also insane, 24 cores? Wow. If you want to write a novel in a coffee shop, you should go for a light, portable, efficient machine like the Air. Battery life is a problem on windows machines, but is it worth spending $1000 and sacrificing on processing power? In my opinion and use cases of programming, game dev and digital art, no.
And for 460€, a PS5 with 16GB.
what games do you play on it?

Who has the best trackpad on a pc laptop? That’s what I’m looking for now that processors are improved. Any suggestions
I believe the Apple XDR displays like on the MacBook Pro uses mini-LED.
Best combo right here- MacBook Pro with custom desktop PC. However, I'd probably install Linux on the desktop rather than Windows.
Also Apple just dropped the M4 MBPs
That’s usually Linus’s job to drop stuff
And upped MBA base RAM to 16 GB.
My opinion... Unless you are a gamer you do not need the latest and greatest. Running my 6 yr old Thinkpad with Fedora and 32G of RAM and it does what I need it to do. This thing is a pleasure to work with and the keyboard is great.

If you think about buying a Mac bcs you dislike Windows, I strongly recommend taking a good look at Linux first. It's better than ever, especially for gaming, and definitely deserves a mention in this discussion.
3:46 Your kid trying to con your parent into buying a "gaming laptop" You don't have to use that word. This the word that almost all parents get angry when heard of. Thankyou for mentioning this Dave. 😊
Having that dilemma right now. The worst part is that I cannot argue with him, since I know I wouldn't have taken a dGPU as a "gaming laptop" myself. 😐
As they should be! Gaming laptops are a giant scam anyways, these devices will :
- Cost more for equal performance than their desktop counterparts
- Not last as long as normal laptops due to the increased thermal stress, and more power hungry (usually non replaceable) components
- Have poor battery performance due to said power hungry components
- Look dumber
- Be noisier du to more powerful fans.
Personally if I had children, and if my children were to ask me for gaming laptops, I would first tell them all of the above with an annoying voice, and then :
- Buy a refurbished business grade laptop for like 200 to 400$, which is the only good cost to quality option of the market in my opinion, on which I would maybe even put Linux to ensure maximum productivity (unless weird software is needed for their school)
- Spend the remainder of my budget on a nice desktop gaming pc
This would give me the added bonus as a parent that I could restrict the usage of the gaming rig without preventing work, if necessary. Not a perfect solution of course, there is still plenty of fun to be had on a business laptop if studies are boring enough, but nice to have the option.
More like convincing your wife that your kid needs a gaming laptop!

Taking away replaceable internal storage is the most disappointing thing laptop makers are doing, and this is going to lead to tragic levels of unnecessary e-waste.
They came for the batteries and we said nothing, they came for the ram and we said nothing, they came for...
…and when they came for our ports, who would speak out for them. The noughts and ones were silenced. Forever trapped in corporate gulags.
These new windows laptops are basically what m1 was when it first came out. Things should balance out as new versions of these windows machines come out with likely incremental updates like m2 and m3.
Not until Microsoft fixes their modern standby, honestly this is the worst implementation of laptop sleep state till date.
I have yet to lug my computer to a coffee shop to code or photoshop. I believe in working at my desk.. and drinking coffee at a coffee shop. If you are a student, especially grad students in science or art fields and need to use rendering software and take their device from class to class, for the sake of battery life I would push them to get a MacBook. For people like me, who keep their laptop at home, I will definitely take the better specs and processing power over battery life.
@@00shivani your comparison is only valid when comparing prices. During heavy tasks the dedicated gpu is gonna draw huge amounts of power, resulting in a very poor battery life compared to a mac.
Also I believe the comment is more about comparing the Snapdragon to the Apple Silicon M1, which is a fair comparison in terms of usability/compatibility
@@vaf3614 their comment said “windows laptops” so that’s what my response was to. If they said snapdragon chips specifically, then I likely wouldn’t say anything, bc I am personally interested in and researching the Intel ultra chips.
My comment is not about price, but the price is a major plus, the processing power I mentioned on the Nvidia RTX 4070 is insane, you are mistaken to think M4 Max’s integrated graphics is comparable. It might be comparable.. but that makes the Pro and regular GPU non competitive at all. We are talking about Nvidia here. Look up the specs. The Intel ultra 9 is also insane, 24 cores? Wow. I nerd out for a good cpu. Maybe I’m biased bc I’m investing in Intel.
People who get pro machines are more so worried about their intensive workloads rather than battery life. If you want to write a novel in a coffee shop, you should go for a light, portable, efficient machine like the Air. Battery life is a problem on windows machines, but is it worth spending $1000 and sacrificing on processing power? In my opinion and use cases of programming, game dev and digital art, no. Large pro machines are clunky as expected, and lugging them around becomes a chore. I do work at my desk or bed, and I drink coffee at coffee shops. Don’t really mix and match the two.
It would be cool if I got the MBP because I can complete my “ecosystem” as they call it. Easy to airdrop images etc. But tbh, I don’t like when companies restrict users on ecosystems. But business is business, I do get it. But I need that power if you know what I’m sayinn
I’m still researching so we’ll see what happens

PyTorch actually works with Apple's GPU, but it is officially unsupported. I had purchased a fairly high-end LInux box, and put a $4000 NVIDIA GPU in it, but recently I had to shut the Linux box down because it was infected with ransomware -- which kindly left me a message asking for $3000 to restore my source code files. Fortunately I had enough scattered backups on removable devices to reconstruct most of the history and all of the current project. So now that I finally have the "mps" device working in PyTorch, I can develop my small language model project (this is for personal interest, not for earning money) using only my Macbook Pro. It's a great feeling.
Where ya been? We're tankin here
I made the same recommendation to my girlfriend who was looking for a budget replacement for her old computer. She go an M1 macbook air for 800$ and she's very happy with her purchase so far. It's insane how these machines were ahead of their time when first launched.
Dave 2 D out here saving people from regrets. Meanwhile MKBHD trying to finesse his audience. 😒
Mkbhd trying to milk his brand before he slowly quits
Perfect, glad I waited after this past gen of laptops dropped
Also, looking for a phone upgrade, should we expect a review for the Sony Xperia Mark VI? Looks awesome
I think apple removed 8gb variants yesterday
For me, Losing the upgradable ram is actually the worst thing especially for people that are really on a budget. It was very useful when you are not able the aford the max RAM early and then upgrade it when you will really need it or when you are able to aford it.
Not having at least one RAM slot for upgrades should be illegal.
My 6 yr old HP Envy just bit the dust, forcing to me to evaluate new laptops. You are spot on in the assessment that the price to play (intelligently) is $1300 to $1500. I have not heard any other reviewer speak this so clearly as you did here. Thankyou! And yes, "Copilot" is right there with 3D tv...marketing gibberish.
video aged like milk
my cousin asked me for a budget laptop rec and i said get the m1 air, she was also surprised to hear an apple product when asking for a budget laptop but it's just soo good
Funnily enough, I (just 2 days ago) bought a 14inch M1 Macbook Pro, after considering all of the current gen laptops in price compared to the performance difference between last gen. Strange 'lil coincidence
Thanks for the headsup
