I had a guy come at my car with a bat while i was sitting in the driver seat...he walked up,tapped on my window with his bat,i rolled the window down about 3" he tried to put his face up to the window to look in my car and i unloaded pepper spray right in his eyes at point blank range...I never seen anyone retreat so quickly. I drove off and went about my day...a nonlethal ending to a bad situation and a learning experience for Mr. Agressive Bat Boy!
Webbit2019 Wow, amazing you didn’t have to pullover and stagger out of your vehicle for a few minutes. I accidentally triggered some spray on a customers set of car keys in my office once and it cleared out the entire area for several minutes. I can only imagine what it would be like while enclosed in a vehicle. Good for you though.
Pepper spray is an underrated self defense product. You'll probably catch a lot of shit for saying it's more useful than carrying a gun, but you're absolutely correct.
It's more useful because it technically fits more lawful use cases. You can use pepper spray in a self defense situation that involves deadly force and non-deadly force legally. A gun, not so much.
@@insanity4082 it's also less hassle, dealing with spraying someone vs shooting someone, both will probably keep you alive but one will involve a lot more police
Ok, so I have the bear spray and I practiced with an extra in my back yard. The wind changed. My pregnant wife, mother in law, and 2 kids hated me for 30 minutes.. my back yard is 80 yards up a hill. I had no idea how nasty that stuff is.. Edit: mother in law still hates me.
@Evan Moyer I mean that's just how videos work. Unless you're an amateur. This is a store, and a guy who works for the store. The "selling things" part is baked in.
I was gonna say the same thing..he seems more neutral and honest... that hyperbolic. Seems he cares more about safety and self-preservation than politics. Which is why I subscribed. Don't change...great job.
Once you think about the legal consequences of using a firearm against an assailant who's unarmed, then having to convince a judge or jury that you honestly felt your life was in danger, pepper spray makes a lot of sense as a non-lethal option. Thanks for the thorough tutorial, Chris (and all your other thoughtful reviews).
my EDC is OC, edged tool, and firearm and the OC and tool are way more versatile and typically way more useful. of course, nothing beats a firearm in pure lethality.
My sister was attacked in an RV near a collage and grabbed some fuel injection cleaner then sprayed them in the face and eyes. She told me that they never made it out of the RV and just rolled around on the floor until the police arrived. She did tell me that she resprayed them if they tried to stand up.
Great review. As a former LEO. I can attest that this works. Long story short. 3 days on the job I had to use this on a group. I was riding shotgun with my training officer and learned immediately make sure your cruiser window is down before you use it. It worked. On me.
In most states you can carry a gun, knife and pepper spray. In Canada you can carry pocket knife and pepper spray. In the UK, guns, knives and pepper are forbidden, but you can carry CMD . CMD is Criminal Marking Dye . Honestly.
I had it happen twice with the Sabre safety in my pocket. Goes right onto the junk. I was at work both times and had to go home and clean up. Will never carry that type in my pocket again. Does not feel good.
I've always carried pepper spray, especially since I'm originally from New Jersey and when not working security or armored car, I couldn't carry a gun. I've used it a grand total of once, against a Doberman that got loose from its yard and starting running towards me barking. Now I live in Pennsylvania, got my permit to carry and I still carry pepper spray. Just makes sense.
@G Galilei I invite you to move in to some of those eastern PA neighborhoods where the NJ elite transplants invaded and you will see what I mean. Rude people, rude drivers, think the whole world revolves around them. Then again maybe you like people like that.
I applaud Lucky Gunner (an ammo company) for giving us self-defense content about non-firearms! Many companies would limit themselves to plugging their own products. Maybe Lucky Gunner should start carrying pepper spray also? -- become an all-around self-defense company? I would love to see a video on how to harden your home against invasion!
My sabre 3-in-one keychain spray deployed yesterday while loading up some furniture. Pain. And. Suffering. I had coverage from my mid-abdominals all the way down to mid-thigh. Barely missed my groin (Whew!). I can't imagine what it would be like to take a direct hit to the face with this stuff. It took a LONG time for the burning to subside. It seemed to intensify for about 10-15 minutes before it stopped feeling like someone was poking me with needles. And a friggin huge chemical burn. I am definitely NOT carrying the turn and press safety type on my person anymore. Also, this experience gave me much more confidence in the stopping power this stuff has. Pretty much ruined my day. So, good job, Sabre! Keep peddling your pain and suffering. I'll keep recommending it.
POM Personal defense , it’s nasty stuff and I recommend it highly Update: John had to change his slogan because POM complaint their product being associated with nasty stuff
Been a Correctional Officer for a little over a year. We carry Sabre Red. Before my time It was Fox. Dont do gel as it requires much better aim, and can be too thick to drop down the forehead in time. It truly is an indispensable tool!
I agree with almost everything you have said; your assessment of OC/CS formulas is an exception. OC and CS have two different methods of action and affect the body differently. This is why when I was a working police officer, I found OC/CS mixtures were more effective on more intoxicated and psychotic people than OC alone. To say that CS merely dilutes OC is inaccurate.
@@tyyamnitz8408 Also, I've heard that ~15% of ppl (genetically?) have NO reaction to OC, so the CS is a critical hedge. I've also read stories from LEOs about the combined stacking for an overall more powerful stopping effect
@timseguin6292 At least with Sabre their OC/CS formula reduces the MC content to 0.33% (while adding 1.5% CS). I never had much luck with this one, probably mostly because of the 'diluted' MC content. I think that the single-ingredient Sabre Red 1.33% formula is much more effective and acts quicker than this particular OC/CS mixture.
Haha, me too. I had to come to the laptop and make sure when he first mentioned Fritz, my mind immediately went to a real person. Having been OC'ed myself and seeing videos of others testing it, I was eager to see another suffer .... dummy.
Not hard if your department actually deploys it..... military police use oc spray religiously in 4 years I used 8 mid sized cans. And a riot control bottle and fogger.
What counts as "exposed" though? Any time you catch some blowing back in your face I'm guessing. Although I'm sure he's been intentionally blasted in the face with it a few times.
@@yunggolem4687 we used to have issues with it so much we used foam or sprayed it in our own hand and smeared the subjects faces when fighting in a pile I had a girl spray me and suspect while I was fighting a methed out girl and after my pride was hurt I cried and slobbered on myself because my contact seared to my left eye.
I worked in private security for 27 years. Carried sabre red stream and had to use it a few times. Results were good and it did what it was supposed to do.
As a Correctional Officer, I got a 3 second blast from 1 foot away directly in my eyes. I've also had to enter spaces where it's been deployed. The most important thing to understand is that it effects people differently. I've seen it completely incapacitate someone. I've also seen it piss someone off even more than they were originally. And we have the strong stuff!
@@lockergr tear gas hurts worse but as soon as you're in fresh air the effects are over in minutes. OC lasts for hours. That said, bear spray would be your best option. Not only is it very strong, but the spray comes out in a greater volume and higher pressure. That stuff goes 30 ft whereas a regular can of OC comes out in a thin stream. Aim is important with that, but not so much with bear spray. That said, OC is effective on most people.
I work in a jail for the past 11 years. I carry a 4 oz. Sabre Red at work, and carry Fox 5.3 out of work. The Sabre is good if you get a clear shot (I have 17 sprays of violent offenders), won't stop them, but will slow them down. We are not allowed to have Fox 5.3, it is considered too strong by the state where I work, while the local PD won't carry it because they think it is too close to "excessive use of force".
See he said another comment that Fox was not as good as people had claimed, but I'm with you on this one. I wish that Fox Labs would make a 360 version.
I'm former LEO, so I have some experience with OC... I switched brands to one that the deputies were using, after I soaked a guys face, and he still evaded several officers, and a K-9 tracker... My recommendation, and go-to is FOX... It's 2% OC... Stronger then the standard LEO issue, but legal for anyone to purchase if your state allows it... I carry the Fox Five Point Three in stream... They have varied sizes... I carry the 1.5 oz in a snap case that has a belt clip... Stick it on your belt, shorts, or whatever pants you're wearing... You'll find, as I did, that bad guys get use to the traditional OC used by LEO's and jails, and it has little to no effect on them...
The 2% in Fox is the percentage of OC, not the MC content. The lower the percentage of OC, the quicker the recovery time. The higher the MC content, though, is what causes the effects. So, quicker decon/recovery with Fox, but still super effective with its MC content of 1.4%.
Pro Tips - Check your state laws as some states limit the maximum size allowed. California, for example, limits canister size to 2.5 oz max. Ladies, don't just toss the can anywhere in your purse. You'll never be able to find it in time. If you're going to purse carry it, figure out a way...like a holster or similar...where you can store it in a solid location, where it won't come loose, so you know exactly where it's at A black canister may be very difficult to locate in a purse...especially in the dark. Pink or something bright might be a better choice.
As a LEO with different departments I’ve been sprayed and had accidental, incidental, and contact with OC and CS on numerous occasions. OC works well and in my state, NY, is equal to physical force. I prefer OC to hands on and short of a taser it is the best less than lethal option. I like Asp Palm series sprays; I carry the defender which is similar in size to a mini mag light. Asp has inert canisters for training and OC canisters as you reload the device just like putting batteries in a flashlight. Also makes 3 different sizes of their palm series and all can easily go on a key ring of in a pocket. I’ve also carried a few brands and used stream, fogger, cone, and foam. I preferred foam due to its effectiveness at distance as well as the very reduced blow back in wind. As a note foam doesn’t do much against dogs; in my experience stream and fogger stops dogs in their tracks. Regardless of what you carry you should practice with it. And take a lesson from law enforcement once you use it toss it because once used they can leak and not work the next time, when you may need it. Start in the chest and work up to the forehead then go back down. Be careful with stream sprays and needle effect; this is where the spray acts like a needle and can, at close ranges, actually damage an eye.
This is what I love about this channel. This video works for people who are interested in getting one but also for people who sell them so they can pass it on to their customers.
Always carry it in a snap, or velcro pouch... Kinda like the cops use, but smaller... I like mine that has a metal belt clip... I can clip it on anything... For women, they could easily clip it to the purse, or even the purse strap... I carry mine like my gun... On my belt, outside my pants, with a cover shirt concealing it...
British police, we use Pava and it's nasty stuff, I've had it used on me in training and I've used it on aggressive suspects and it's super effective. I'd recommend holding the can close to your chest rather than out at arms length, aim low and move the stream up as you spray to get the mouth nose and eyes
Great information. I carry a Sabre Red MK-4 in my vehicle. On my person, I used to carry Sabre Red 3 in 1 Compact but had the same issue you had with the activation button sliding off of safe. I now carry a POM. I pull of the base of the POM and make a note of the expiration date. When I reassemble the POM, I position the clip in line with the nozzle and put a dab of glue on the colored ring. That way I have a tactile indication of the direction of the nozzle. The clip naturally sits in the crease of the finger joints in the middle of my hand.
I got hit by a couple of CS grenades during field exercises. The effect was pretty instant when I get hit by the cloud. My equipment is still kinda spicy a year later.
I’m a police OC, taser and firearms instructor (certified by Sabre, Axon and the state). Been exposed to the first 2 myself, thankfully not the 3rd. OC spray and taser effectiveness are wildly different. For OC I was able to continue fighting and keep my eyes partially open for about a minute before my eyes shut and I had to wash it out of my eyes. Took me about an hour to feel normal and it reactivated later that night when I took a shower. Taser was immediately effective, once I got hit with it I was on the ground and in extreme pain for 5 seconds. Once those 5 seconds were over I felt physically exhausted but overall normal. Within about 5 minutes the exhaustion was gone. So basically OC spray isn’t immediately effective and taser is, however I would (hesitantly) get hit with the taser again, I would not want to get hit with the OC spray ever again.
I live in Florida everyone wears a T-shirt so I imagine a taser works pretty good I would also imagine in some parts of the country people are wearing heavy jackets and multiple layers and tasers would be almost useless? I wouldn’t know. just a thought
@@thatguy4087 tasers are designed to mitigate that issue, but it is still pretty common I think. InRange just did a video with the taser company not long ago
I remember being sprayed for the first time during my academy. It was surprisingly manageable and had very little effect on me. I remember thinking that it tasted like Vietnamese food lol. I eat a lot of spicy foods and really think that's what made the difference. I used it a few times on people and it was always effective, but you are right, there's always a few seconds where the person being sprayed is likely to still be able to fight.
@@lockergr A combo is probably not necessary. I have used a combo fogger before but it was on a large group. I have also sprayed one of the little Mace brand OC/Tear gas combo sprays; it has a pretty wide spray pattern so it makes it a little easier to hit someone with the spray, but it also makes it more susceptible to being blown around if there's any wind. The OC only cans such as Sabre shoot a nice stream, almost like a can of silly string.
Great content as usual. I'd like to offer some constructive criticism. If the manufacturer says to do bursts, you shouldn't test it with a continuous spray. Continuous rapid release of the contents drops the temp (and pressure) with diminishing returns if not done in short bursts. It's similar to one of those keyboard air dusters. The performance is awful when held continuously, but short bursts are the ticket to get that extra little bit of velocity out of them.
I worked in security and corrections as entry level and management for 15 years. My personal experience with OC is that its effective against "clear headed" individuals but hardly at all against drug addled or mentally ill or just highly motivated people. I see it as more of a compliance/ deterrence device more so than a self defense device.
Ain’t nobody taking fogger in the mouth at 3-5 feet. Nobody. Last ditch it will work. Especially for a female. Red Sabre cs/oc works till the last drop.
You know, I think the beginning statement about recommending atleast pepper spray is a very important one that I wish more people would consider. It’s too often I see anyone that could be in danger due to who they are forego having any defense simply because they are for gun control. It’s important for everyone that is even remotely in danger to have any defense & I wish more people would preach that, especially on the left.
damn. after carrying it around, i sprayed some on a piece of paper, then touched my finger in it & tasted it. it was overwhelming! i can't imagine getting sprayed with it all over. good on ya.
Just something to be aware of: in some states it's a crime to use bear spray against humans - even in self defense in cases where lethal force would be justifiable. It's asinine but it can get you hung up if you don't know.
Chris, you are a wealth of information. I can't thank you enough for your educational mentoring. With today's civil unrest and political chaos between parties...this is timely stuff. Thanks for your well thought out presentations and time to develop these videos. Job well done.
Probably has something to do with the fact that everyone with any time in the self-defense/firearms realm of discussion, has heard some close variation of that same joke many times before. It's almost common enough to be a meme, if not a verbatim catch-phrase... which Chris well knows, and is merely re-using it as such.
Great video. Have been carrying Pepper Gel for almost a year. Like most gun owners I don't want to hurt anyone. This gives me a way, in certain situations, to just get the bad guys to "back off". Versus waving a handgun around....I like options.
I have relied on those little Saber Red Pepper Pens at times, when the wife drags me to the opera where they have a no-self-defense policy and force you through a metal detector, the little pen sprayer is the only thing I can reliably get through the metal detector.
"voluntary close their eyes". Negative. For me and most people, it is 100% involuntary - the eyes slam shut immediately... been hit twice in training. The stuff is extremely nasty.
I got sprayed 3 times twice by pepper spray and once by bear spray and whatever kind of cheap little pepper spray I experienced, was not bad at all I mean it burned a little but I could see I could breath it barely did anything to me but that bear spray was debilitating 100% so if you carry pepper spray get good stuff
I knows it’s been well over 3 years now, but I use this video as reference when some folks come in and aren’t super happy about wanting to carry a gun. I’m in lowers KS, and folks are peaceful, but as the world gets worse, they don’t want to be left defenseless, but can’t bring themselves to the idea of “lethal defense”. This is a great guide for people who don’t have any reference of what CS/PS does or have a limited base of info for it.
I had Hospital Police & Security at one time, can't use the spray inside, too much recirculation of air. The gel worked fine but keep in mind, they can sling it back on you if your having to take someone down. Most civilians are just trying to be left alone and it works fine.
Thanks for posting! I've never thought of using pepper spray, but my interest in self-defense has been peaked recently. I will take a look and I think the practice sprays will be very beneficial to learn how to use it if necessary. Thanks and keep it up!
If you worked for the government or had video evidence than it's probably on your side. Otherwise, if you go to gun rather than less lethal, you'll have a significantly tough time in court.
@Long Nards The judge doesn't convict you. I'm too lazy for links but just type in- Good Luck America pepper spray. It's an honest video from a retired cop with decades of experience. I strongly recommend this to anyone that may have questions or is on the fence. He pokes fun at that ASP clown too which is a bonus.
@Long Nards Instead of wasting time in a comment section, check out the recommended video and stop asking banal questions. Apparently you don't understand lethal force.
I got into pepper spray from John Correia (ASP)...after carrying a firearm, legally. He says something like, "between a harsh word and a gun"...and his lessons made total sense. I dont wanna shoot (kill) anyone...but i would rather just bless em with the hot sauce...and go on about my day
Great video. I have been carrying POM for about a year and have been very happy. Comfortable in the pocket. Other canisters have sharp edges that will gouge you. A great tool to add to EDC. Keep up the good work Lucky Gunner crew!
Just be aware the flip top Sabre has a tendency to lose its cap. We’ve had two that’s lost it’s caps. It’s better to keep it in your pocket than attached to keys where they can swing around.
I've used a spray in heavy winds and I probably got just as much OC in my face as my target. Even being equally affected the shock of resistance ended the situation instantly. Not a pleasent experience but it worked. Also: if you get OC on your hands you can't wash them enough, trust me, wash them a LOT... and wear gloves when you visit the mens' room. Don't get OC where OC is not meant to go, its a bad time.
Excellent Vid as always, changed my thinking on OC. As a CCW carrier I think OC as a first use is great. God forbid you have to keep going up the force continuum.
During my training, our defensive gun trainer recommended carrying pepper spray because if you are ever in a shooting situation the court will consider that you gave yourself a choice of less than deadly force.
what if the court (prosecutor/persecutor) say 'AHAH, he had pepper spray, hecould have used non(less)lethal force, he could have pepper sprayed the guy, but he CHOSE to gun him down! this was an execution."
Sabre Red GEL was the best for me. Spray is effected by wind too much, and indoors it lingers for a while. At 6 feet GEL had an immediate effect on the attacker. He howled for an hour until the ambulance arrived.
Exactly. In most real-world scenarios you are likely going to be spraying this within about 3-6 feet from the person you are intending to use it on. That's the distance your attacker will likely be at when you are convinced that the attack is on and it's unquestionably time to use the spray. It's always best to carry it in your hand at the ready so you can deploy it as fast as possible and as effectively as possible. Always focus on eyes, nose and mouth and never apply any more than what is necessary to buy yourself the needed time to make a safe withdrawal/escape. Using too much of it can actually kill someone. Something to keep in mind.
The defender series has to be done in bursts. You cannot just hold it down. I’ve made the same mistake. However, I still didn’t like the performance and moved to POM.
"Getting OC on your junk will ruin your day pretty quickly." I can definitely confirm that. The poor guy wondered if he'd ever be able to use *it* again. 😂
I was exposed to burning CS powder in the training shack during Army, USAF, and National Guard training. You went in wearing your M17 respirator and then took it off and said your name and SSN It took a minute or two but had most troops coughing and even vomiting after they left the area of concentrated exposure. I'm not sure of the value of CS in a spray. OC spray to the face usually causes instant irritation. Remember that about 10% of people will not be affected by OC spray. Great video as always, thanks.
The kimber Guardian angel must not be used under a *2 feet range* : this can damage the eyes, the projected liquid travels so fast (muzzle speed is about 90 mph) that it can penetrate into the ocular globes, causing injuries to the cornea. This is caused by a hydraulic needle effect, it's the principle of jet injector used for vaccination. This distance is 5 feet for the JPX jet protector. Under this distance one have to aim for the upper chest : the hitting liquid (with 270 mph muzzle speed) splatters in small droplets up to the face and is intended to have its effect on the perp. The same could happen with a too powerful pepper spray used 1 inch from the eyes. but obviously, you don't always choose the distance ! greeting from France.
@@matwheeler8629 That's a fogger, best for outdoor riot control. It's also a full pound so it's something that you wouldn't carry. It would be useful to have to use outdoors, but it's not for home defense. They have that same size in the new orange label on Amazon.
You're a natural teacher/presenter. Nicely done, and moreover useful! I've been doing some deep dives into OC spray for home and carry, and one reason why people use a three-in-one is because some people are apparently nonreactive to OC. I have heard though people talk about the dilution of the OC in a three-in-one, so it's a toss up for me.
Every can should have an asymmetric shape, so that you can grab it and operate it without looking. I found that on certain cans, i would have to take a look to make sure where the front and back is. This is apparently overlooked quiet frequently. The mark 6 looks fine to me in that regard. Also critically important is a latch below the nozzle, if you accidently cover it up the spray is pretty much useless. The design needs to be absolutely stress proof.
I remember one guy in Basic who went to relieve himself after going through the CS chamber. He came screaming out of the woods, sprinted to the water buffalo, opened the release valve and shoved it in his pants. Wash your hands, folks.
I carry the Sabre gel. It may take a couple seconds longer to work, but I want a zero percent chance of a wind full of pepper spray in my face in a moment where lethal force may be the next option. I have a small lanyard that sticks out of my pocket so I don't have to dig for it It's personal preference I guess.
I've been carrying pepper spray ever since I became a MAILMAN. Yes, the stereotype is true. 🐩🧯🐾🐾🐾 I've probably sprayed about twenty dogs so far, and, thankfully, no people...yet. I've been sprayed once with Freeze +P while in armed security guard class.
@@1810jeff I've seen dogs get shot on video. I would HATE to shoot one of my neighbors dogs, or discharge my firearm for such a thing. Spray has always resolved the situation in my experience.
@@toynazi my issue with dog treats is that those dogs are being trained to run up to EVERY mail carrier, and EVERY mail carrier is afraid of an unknown approaching dog. Some carriers are simply terrified of dogs in general.
Not covered in the video is PEPPER GEL. Pepper Gell can be sprayed a little father & is much, much better to use indoors since it is in gel form. I have used it on one of two attackers in real life & the Saber Pepper Gel I use was very accurate & very, very effective.
Sabre makes a decent product but I have carried Fox Labs 5.3 both professionally or personally for over 20 years. I have been sprayed and sprayed people with different products. Fox Labs 5.3 has been the most effective one for me.
Great video and thank you for the video, gives a great overview of different products. Especially coming from an ammo company you have my deepest respect. Some constructive criticism: 1) If someone is allergic to OC even that can be lethal, so I would call all products LESS lethal. 2) My less lethal EDC is the Kimber Pepper Blaster. It is flat, fits into Jeans pockets, has the longest range for its size, works in RAIN, against WIND and INSIDE, not coming back. Opposite to spray that works OK on short distances, but not in rain or against wind, worse: inside ALL are affected, don't need that! Sure the Pepper Blaster requires some marksmanship, but if I didn't have that, should I just roll over? If you also carry and train with a gun, aiming should be no issue and the Kimber Pepper Blaster is the closest thing to a less-lethal GUN. It's like a OC-Derringer, hitting a shotgun-like 2 foot splash on the target. If that doesn't work maybe the Glock will.
Pepper spray requires little practice and I always carry it with my gun. No reason not to. After this excellent vid I checked the dates on my stuff and some of them were significantly out of date. I went with the POM this time because of convenient size and easy to use trigger. Thanks for the reminder.
sprayed some in the corner of the bedroom 1 time. got hard to breathe, covered it with clothing and refused to move them. Worst experience i had *from stupidity*
I can HIGHLY recommend the Def Tech (Safariland) spray at 14:10. I used it in a jail and prison setting. I've seen it used hundreds of times, and used it myself dozens of times. The 1.3% formula he is holding is the strongest formula and I believe it is actually TOO strong as it just annilates people, and destroys the area too (inside). We typically used the weakest 0.2% formula and it works 99% of the time. The much stronger 1.3% formula made my instantly vomit the second I walked into a cell to extract an inmate. The stuff is unbearably strong... I carry the same exact Mark 6 container of Def Tech spray but in 0.7% strength, which is PLENTY strong, in my observation. Out of all the sprays he reviewed, I am of the opinion that the Def Tec 1.3% is the best of the best for daily carry. Strong stuff, and an excellent delivery method and safety system as well.
That POM stuff is a nice EDC. Clips on the pocket and because of its size and weight you don't even know you're carrying it. Plus, you can set it up so when you grab it your thumb is in the perfect spot to spray.
Excellent job covering Pepper Spray. BUT...why not review FOX. I've been carrying Fox Five point Three 2% stream when I exercise outside. I've only used it on the occasional aggressive dog, but does the job. It is bigger, but still fits OK in my shorts pocket. Used a Sabre for awhile, but it had the side safety; the one you say gives occasional accidental discharges. On my first dog attack carrying Sabre, it wouldn't discharge. With the dog charging me, hard to make sure swivel side safety was off. Had to deliver a couple of head kicks to keep it back. About the time I got some discharge, the dog turned around and took off.
Was at work when a couple of workers accidentally sprayed themselves. We were in a closed kitchen, so no customers were harmed. Basically, one thought it was a perfume stick and sprayed herself. She caught the full brunt, but it was just wafting towards the grill. i was still coughing a little, and i was about 15 ft away.
“Kimber is one of the only pepper sprays that can injure someone”. Actually almost every stream canister of OC spray can permanently damage someone’s eyes through the hydraulic needle effect. Different manufacturers quote different distances, but for my training the canister must be at least 18 inches away from the person’s eyes when being sprayed. Within those 18 inches the spray can cause the eye to be punctured from the stream pressure. The closer you get, the more likely this effect is to take place.
My mom carries Ruger flip top pepper gel. I had pepper gel accidentally go off in my jacket pocket one time, I cleaned it though. I'm working on a get home bag, I want to get Bear Spray to keep in it. Pepper gel sticks to the target and it's much less affected by the wind.
Been carrying the POM spray for about a year now. I like to take the one that's in my pocket out and use it for practice every couple months and replace it with a new one. I suggest buying a piece of Talon grip tape and putting it in the opposite side from the pocket clip. It stops the pieces from rotating and it helps a lot when pulling it out.
Oh god. I recognize that bear spray can. Me and a friend went into an abandoned raided house and found a discarded can and sprayed a bit of it away from us inside the house. We spent the next 20 minutes coughing our lungs out and yelling in pain OUTSIDE the damn house after only having the cloud near us. That bear mace is NO freaking joke. Thanks for the very informative video! I've been thinking for a while about getting a self defense item for myself and I will probably pick one of these up on your recommendation.
So in addition I recently had an incident and had a friend buy me a can of bear mace for "personal protection" and you should be careful because it says directly on the can it can cause permanent damage to the eyes and is not to be used on humans.
I have been carrying POM for about a year, everywhere I go, and I love it. Thanks for the tip about locating the expiration date; this is the first I have heard of it. One thing I don't like about it: I would like for the clip to be more secure. I keep it clipped to the waistband of my running shorts, and sometimes, if I am not careful, it has a tendency to pop off of my waistband. (Once it popped off my waistband at the crowded starting line of a race; I am glad I was aware of it falling off!) Now, I am just mindful of that tendency, and it hasn't been a problem since that incident. Overall, I like POM, and I will intend to continue using it.
Same thing happened to me, but with another mechanism. I would like to carry OC again, but it was damn nasty last time when it went off so I wont carry oc in the future
On your comment about not keeping the spray after expiration.... Well I kept my 9 ounce Frontiersman well after it's 10/2015 expiration. I finally decided to replace it, so I discharged it today (8/2024). I got 4 x 1.5 second bursts. The first burst was at 35 feet and the paper target showed no signs of droplets reaching it, although the cloud of fine mist surely did. So I moved in to 25 feet and the next burst definitely put some wet marks on the paper target. Then I moved in to 15 feet and the 3rd burst just dreched the target, completely coating it in orange liquid, which is pretty wild for what is clearly a spray and not a liquid stream. The 4th and final burst again completely drenched teh target at 15 feet. Looks like I will be keeping my next can until at least 2035!
On the advice of the trainer at my local range, I bought the midsize asp baton for myself (and the palm size for several other people). I carried it for a while, and never technically used it. I say technically because it did leak (trace amounts) after a while, causing an odd burning sensation on my leg near the pocket I kept it in. I didn't figure it out fast enough sadly, because after rubbing my leg, wondering what was going on, I then rubbed my eye. I immediately knew just what had happened, and regretted it for a good long while afterwards. I think the plastic safety latch is a bit too fragile for its purpose, really should be metal, but I don't know if that was the actual problem or not. Switched to a saber red with the rotating safety criticized in this video, and can confirm the safety will rotate to fire on its own, so I check it and reset it frequently. Probably been carrying it about a year give or take, (every day all day) no accidents so far. One other point to criticize - when you draw it it's hard to know the orientation without looking (ie is the spicy end pointed at bad guy, where is the safety). The asp baton is much quicker and easier to aim under duress and to disengage the safety. I did have to threaten someone with the saber to avoid a violent encounter several months back, and it was disturbing how long it took me to get it into action once I decided it needed to come out. I think I'll need to replace it with a thumb cap model at some point.
The Kimber/Piexon Peppergun is by far my favorite. Its literally Peppergel/spray that shoots half of the tank at once. Most people turn away instantly anyway, why not making the first hit really count then? I cant think of a situation where the Piexon wouldnt be enough but a spray would. Also a way bigger ''WTF just hit me''' Effect.

Once you think about the legal consequences of using a firearm against an assailant who's unarmed, then having to convince a judge or jury that you honestly felt your life was in danger, pepper spray makes a lot of sense as a non-lethal option. I agree wholeheartedly. When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem starts looking like a nail.
What about the point of it taking 20 seconds to kick in? I think the effectiveness of pepper spray also boils down to how quick it can affect someone

So is a civilian, would you say that it's good for us to have something with teargas as well since some people are non-reactive to OC?
@@lockergr tear gas hurts worse but as soon as you're in fresh air the effects are over in minutes. OC lasts for hours. That said, bear spray would be your best option. Not only is it very strong, but the spray comes out in a greater volume and higher pressure. That stuff goes 30 ft whereas a regular can of OC comes out in a thin stream.
Pro Tips -
Check your state laws as some states limit the maximum size allowed. California, for example, limits canister size to 2.5 oz max.
Ladies, don't just toss the can anywhere in your purse. You'll never be able to find it in time. If you're going to purse carry it, figure out a way...like a holster or similar...where you can store it in a solid location, where it won't come loose, so you know exactly where it's at
A black canister may be very difficult to locate in a purse...especially in the dark. Pink or something bright might be a better choice.
Good point. i.e. NJ limits the size (contents to .76oz (21.5g).
One thing that no one on the Internet covers is carry methods for oc spray. Any chance you could make a video on that?
Always carry it in a snap, or velcro pouch... Kinda like the cops use, but smaller... I like mine that has a metal belt clip... I can clip it on anything... For women, they could easily clip it to the purse, or even the purse strap... I carry mine like my gun... On my belt, outside my pants, with a cover shirt concealing it...
I keep mine on my pocket. In addition to the simple practicality of it, that allows me to hold it in my hand without it being visible.
I agree , would like to see this addressed
I was thinking a short lanyard would be nice on it
Jones I see, I was thinking it might make pulling it out of your pocket a little easier
@@lecruset would you recommend an OC+ tear gas combo then?

I can only imagine that if you ended up in court over a shooting and had used OC it would show that you tried to avoid using your firearm.
If you worked for the government or had video evidence than it's probably on your side. Otherwise, if you go to gun rather than less lethal, you'll have a significantly tough time in court.

“After recent testing, I’ve added POM self defense spray to my everyday carry... it’s nasty stuff, and I recommend it highly”
Thank you John...lol that was hilarious!!!
Did he really say this?
Thank you Fritz and Karl for your help in this video!
The defender series has to be done in bursts. You cannot just hold it down. I’ve made the same mistake. However, I still didn’t like the performance and moved to POM.
Always the BEST quality self defense information with demos and real world testing. Thank you!
I demand a follow-up with Johnny Knoxville
Fox Labs Five Point Three pepper spray (stream spray version) is my favorite
The Mk9 5.3 is the best
@@matwheeler8629 That's a fogger, best for outdoor riot control. It's also a full pound so it's something that you wouldn't carry. It would be useful to have to use outdoors, but it's not for home defense. They have that same size in the new orange label on Amazon.
You spend a lot of time and effort on your videos and they are very much appreciated.
'It looks like a breath spray but surprise...It's extra spicy!' love it! great video
You’re not the brightest of the bunch huh 🤔
@@simpsimps553 Hey Beta, don't try act like an Alpha.
I feel the same way. Difficult decision
Get the gun shaped ones
I once went to the bathroom to take a piss after using oc i did wash my hand but with running water only no soap. I think I'm sterile now!
I laughing so hard. Thank you.
Always get a friend to help in these situations
I remember one guy in Basic who went to relieve himself after going through the CS chamber. He came screaming out of the woods, sprinted to the water buffalo, opened the release valve and shoved it in his pants.
Wash your hands, folks.
Definitely need a degreasing or emulsifying agent first. Had a buddy in high school do the same thing after using Tiger Balm.
I carry the Sabre gel. It may take a couple seconds longer to work, but I want a zero percent chance of a wind full of pepper spray in my face in a moment where lethal force may be the next option.
I have a small lanyard that sticks out of my pocket so I don't have to dig for it
It's personal preference I guess.
Yep, just carry a bit larger size so you can get off more shots.
I've been carrying pepper spray ever since I became a MAILMAN.
Yes, the stereotype is true. 🐩🧯🐾🐾🐾
I've probably sprayed about twenty dogs so far, and, thankfully, no people...yet.
I've been sprayed once with Freeze +P while in armed security guard class.
Invest in dog treats man.
All the neighborhood dogs welcome me everyday. Even the mean ones.
Yeah I carry some on my walks and it seems to work even on large aggressive dogs
@@TeachAllNations I wouldn't think twice about shooting a feral dog but someone's pet is a different story
Only thing about fox is the propulsion is not great. But yeah that stuff is way more potent than anything else.
Seems the mixture changed recently, still as good since then?
James Scheppegrell the best is Fox Labs five point three squared. It’s 1.43% major cap
@@josh48315 nope it's 2% and that's why I've carried it for the last 5 years over Sabre
@@kinguin7 Two percent is plenty effective. All of the bigger percentages are just marketing gimmicks......................elsullo
I carry Pom OC everyday. I got the idea from Active Self Protection. Great video! Thanks for your input
Worst experience i had
*from stupidity*
You are my go to channel for good, honest and accurate information. Keep up the good job 👍. Thanks
Do you use spray stream or foam?
Hydraulic needle effect with OC canisters is an overstated myth used to try and drum up lawsuits.
@ that's incredibly irresponsible
@Karl Schubert the Kimber device is a bad idea, same with the similar JPX
@@chuckhaggard1584 Really appreciating your perspective.
Kimber is a better product but like everything else you need to know the safe distance. The JPX is even better but bigger.
Can you make a part too? Thank You
Been carrying the POM spray for about a year now. I like to take the one that's in my pocket out and use it for practice every couple months and replace it with a new one.
I suggest buying a piece of Talon grip tape and putting it in the opposite side from the pocket clip. It stops the pieces from rotating and it helps a lot when pulling it out.
Use FOX OC spray that is one of the hottest in the industry, 5.3 MILLION SHUs
I concur 100% I've carried for over 10yrs and have used when I worked in nightclubs on intoxicated people.
Thumbs up for the "accidentally spray Junk" lol.
Had a can of 3 in 1 go off in my pocket. The CS gas left blisters like a 2nd degree burn. Prolonged misery.
Was it a can without safety?
@@olisk-jy9rz The turn and press type. 12:00
I carry sabre red pepper gel and it seems to work well on aggressive dogs even on large ones.
I have the POM one too. Great video, I'm glad you took the time to make this comparative demo!
Totally agree with you on both carrying an OC and it being more useful than a firearm. Bar is much lower for using an OC.
The ASP ones seem like an Anton Chiggur delivery style would work best. "Can you just hold still for me?" LOL
im so grateful for lucky gunner videos. You are super humble and I respect your opinion a lot because of it.
I didn't know they made that kind of noise; if they had more shots/reload they'd have my money.
