I have to say, when i first watched this episode, i was as livid as Diamond Dave even though i knew why he did what he did. Guys make sure to check out Levi-Heicho´s OVA after this season ends. Its just 2 episodes.

Levi basically saved Eren’s life here, after Eren shouted they all got scared and drew weapons. Since Levi is humanity’s strongest soldier he showed that he has no fear and can easily kill him if he has to, him doing this was probably the turning point of the judge handing eren to the survey corps, he also apologies at the end and asks him if he knows why that was necessary
It was also important as a demonstration of Eren's loyalty to humanity I think. It proves a point that Eren is not a wild card who might turn on them at any moment, because he didn't transform during the beating or turn on humanity even when getting brutalized. I think that's also why Levi went about it as viciously as he did, because a slap on the wrist wouldn't prove the point as well as a hard attack like this where Eren even lost a tooth and whatnot, and still just took it. It shows both that Levi is utterly unintimidated and would be able to handle Eren if he acted against them, and that Eren is unlikely to do so. At least that's always been my interpretation

Also I really like how he uses the beating for a major point: "Oh you're worried I'm antagonizing him? How do YOU plan to handle him?"
The initial route for winning the case was to convince Eren is reliable and/or their only hope, but the courtroom gave in to fear and panic, so Levi and Erwin leaned into it (probably planned for it). Who here is the best at dealing with titans?

The entire series is written by one author, Hajime Isayama. Others would work on production of the actual animation, since it's based off a written/drawn manga, but the actual story itself is completely made by one person (most manga are), which is incredibly impressive.

Isayama is born in japan in a little town between big mountains with only one acess or exit
SO a long time he thought this massive mountains are like big walls hiding the world from him.
Aot plays more in like germany but the walls are inspired by his hometown + a city in germany that exists till today with such walls as in aot.
Crazy how he adapted that into aot.

seeing Eren carrying the Boulder was so sick
Spoilers for season 4
Especially after the final season. Compare episode 13 to season 4 episode 19. Titan-shifted Eren, marching through a besieged Trost/Shiganshina, while being protected by his friends, with the goal being to reach something at the wall (the giant hole, or Zeke lying where he fell near the wall). The only difference is that in the first instance, his goal in the moment is the protection of Trost. In the second, it's the destruction of the world. It's humanities first victory against the titans and Paradis' final victory against Marley.

Eren reached the wall for the EXACT same reason both times. First to bring the boulder and save his friends. Second time to reach the wall and activate the rumbling to once again save his friends. As he said, there's always been walls before him, preventing him from his goals. Peak fucking writing 🔥🔥

For me, the most shocking parallel is between this episode and s4's 1st Special: in both Eren has the same inner monologue "flaming water, freezing earth, (...) the man who gets to see them is the most free in the world"; here it's so a hyped up moment when he said this, but in the special, he says this as the Rumbling is happening in full force, then he said "here we are at last" and it pans to the horror of a flattened and bloodied earth, it was so heartcrushing to hear these words again in that context...
i love how much you guys discuss after every episode, it's very refreshing. most people talk about it for just two minutes before ending the video. it really seems like you guys appreciate every detail
Not just that but it’s actually how fair use is properly applied. A lot of channels barely do anything and really just react with emotion which technically doesn’t constitute fair use. Having more than half of time being in depth review gives these guys a strong legal standing if they were to be stricken with copyrighted infringement
In the Mikasa backstory episode. While Eren was supposed to stay put, his dad went to get the Military Police which would have a record of the incident.
Once a week is too long for this, but at least we get two eps per video. Enjoying them a lot.

37:24 Hi guys, glad to hear you didn't feel like this episode is a filler episode. In fact, there is no filler episodes in Attack on Titan anime. Zero. Everything you see is canon. its all the main story. All the story driven episodes, slower episodes, minimal or no action episodes, in AoT are all canon. So they are all important.
Even the OVAs will relate strongly to the main story. The characters portrayed in the OVAs, gives you a fuller, better, stronger understanding of the background story of AoT + the characters, that you will not see in the main anime story.
The OVAs are a must watch. This is the whole Attack on Titan watching experience.
It's so insane to me that some people would feel like this is a filler episode. The story literalmente progresses and expands (e.g. we get to know how the different political parties think, how the citizens react, etc.) , how can it be a filler. Besides that, it's so incredibly neccesary for the pacing. We had a lot, A LOT of action and we reached to an amazing climax, it's the perfect timing to slow down

Some people think anything that doesn't push the plot forward is filler, even if important development of characters, themes, ideas are introduced or explained. Some people think that anything that doesn't contain actual action is a filler episode. If you were to ask each individual person who calls an episode filler what it actually means to be a filler episode, you'd get a lot of interesting, conflicting and incorrect answers.
I think they didn't use the word filler in an "anime meaning", as in not canon to the source material, but in a "original TV show / work meaning", as in... well as other comments said, the definition vary for every one (for me it's an episode that doesn't contribute anything regarding the main plot or character development)
Imagine beating Eren to the point when everyone who was afraid of him would feel sorry for him and would not be angry with the decision to give him a chance of helping human kind under control of Levi who seems to be not only strict and effective but even more violent to Eren than people who were seeing a huge threat and inconvenience in him. Beating him to the point we think he nearly d1ed and definitely isn't looking like a threat anymore. (In fact Levi seems more threatening, even being smol af)
It's called Levi's way of solving the problem.

I think what people tend to misunderstand is that live action movies or shows cost A LOT of money to produce. When it comes to affects, film time, film equipment, sets, makeup, wardrobe, actors, rehearsals, the actors’ physiques, travel time and so much more, you have to condense the storyline into a small window of visual representation. Live action has very little wiggle room for creative expression and detail to the story so you’re basically going to get a summarized version of the story but with Anime, you’ll be able to get way more out of the story for less of the cost. That’s one of the reasons why Anime is so awesome-except when it has too many fillers episodes.

The third reason behind the beating was explained in the conversation: Can you even kill him? Levi demonstrates his confidence in his ability to kill Eren by beating him mercilessly, everyone else got scared and worried that he would turn and be unkillable. The military police is assuming Eren will let them.

Levi beating the crap out of Eren is both a favorite and infamous scene of the series. At first people resent Levi for going over the top but after a rewatch to many it’s just pure fanservice 😂

The military police had the reports of Eren and Mikasa killing three kidnappers because Eren's dad got some military police to come investigate the Ackerman murders (he told Eren to wait at the Ackerman's house while he went for the authorities) and they found the two kids at the kidnappers' hideout and wrote a report on what had happened.
Saw Levi, mentally screamed. So, so ready for this next arc.
This show gets 100x better with Levi and Erwin☝🏻
In answer to some of your comments about "just killing" the Titans or even going for the eyes. I think we have to remember that most people are not half as competent as Mikasa or Levi.
Vast majority of the garrison regiment have never killed a titan with ODM gear. Sure you train for it, but actually pulling it off is incredibly tough. There's so many ways to lethally mess up when you're grappling through the air, even moreso when titans are there. One of the things that make the Survey Corps especially competent is that they're made of the survivors who've braved the frontiers. Most of which have actually killed a titan or at least directly supported killing one.
40:20 Dr. Jaeger called upon the Military Police while Eren sneaked out to save Mikasa in S1E6. So definitely the MP would have the blotter of the Ackermann double murder and kidnapping incident...
The glowing green eyes are a stylistic choice, more to emphasize the intensity than his eyes glowing more or less.
Humanity finally got its first real win against the titans. But it was far too pyrrhic to actually be celebrated for very long. Marco saved Jean earlier in episode 13. But when it came down to it, there wasn't anyone around to save him from his fate. Whatever that fate might've been. In situations like this, people you know can be alive one second and gone the next. Also, you guys seemed a bit confused about how Jean escaped from the titan flying at him. The TV version of this season was a bit unfinished. But it was eventually fixed when the blu-ray version released. In the blu-ray version, Annie is shown to land on the titan's neck and push it down onto the ground to save Jean. So many twists. So many turns. But with one final push from Armin, Eren plugged up that hole.
Speaking of Armin, I love how he sees that Levi definitely has something planned when he starts hitting Eren. Seeing your best friend get beaten up would probably get most people so angry that they couldn't be rational. But Armin being able to think even under pressure is very valuable.
The reason for the recaps at the beginning was due to the animation. The recap actually helps the animators to make better animation when given less time. 2 minutes of recap makes for 20 minutes of great animation. Also, anime just has a bad record of doing long recaps.
Also Erens dad called the police they were there after they were dead reacting to how two kids could murder 3 grown ass men.
It’s all recorded that’s how they know and wanted Mikasa as well cause she is treated like an adopted sibling. It’s stupid but when aren’t humans stupid when scared and anxious over new things they can’t explain.
Guys that's just because the japanese voice acting, animation, music choice and action in very good Animes are all the same. Epic and very well done. This gives everyone goosepumps who are very invested in it 🎉😂❤

Since now you met captain Levi you should probably know the power scaling here - Mikasa is probably the best cadet fighter and Levi is about 2-3 leagues above her 😅 also you should think in human form they have weapons to kill them effiviently, but eren in titan form (if not punching the head off) is only good for high strength tasks

You guys mentioned that Levi was showing he could control Eren and that he wouldn't turn on a whim, but I also love that it garnered sympathy for Eren. Its hard watching people get beaten that won't or can't fight back. Even if Eren does fuck up on something small, you can bet people will cringe wondering how Levi punished him.

There are several characters who I didn't like at first and still don't like (I'm looking at you Floch). Also, plenty of characters do have plot armor. Sure, random nobodies die all the time but, for the most part at least, our main characters do stay alive.

The shot of Mikasa clearing a path and riding the Titan down, with Eren's silhouette coming through the smoke, and Armin cry. Top 5 AOT moment for me.
Pretty sure you already understand most or even all of this since you're already up to S2 on Patreon, but I just want to make it clear about the rank of command in Survey Corps. 40:53 Hange Zoe is not a part of Levi's squad, Hange is also a Captain like Levi, Mike the sniffing guy also is a Captain, there's another one Captain who does'nt get as much screen time as the others, he's Ness.
Each Captain leading a big platoon that contains a couple of smaller teams, and each teams has their own Leader too. But for Levi it's different from the other Captain, Levi only has 1 team under him which is a special operation team/Elite. That's why Levi has different tittle than all other Squad Captain, the other captain tittle is Buntaichou (Section Commander), and Levi is Heichou (Captain). They're all under Commander Erwin (Danchou).
One important thing to keep in mind is that the survey corp, at this point in the story, if you remember correctly from when Eren saw them come in from a mission, they're not as respected as the garrison or the police. Erwin does command some respect, but Levi needed to make a show of power that big just so they would understand that Eren wasn't a threat to him and they could trust him with him. Otherwise they would have sided with the Military Police.
The Survey Corp is seen by most people as a waste of taxpayer money.
This is a society very much ruled by fear and ignorance. The Survey Corp seeks knowledge.
Levi will more than make up for this moment, wait for it lol.
Good thing about watching these reactions.. is that you can see how close they are to the truth or the plot, the answers they seek.. lol haha but they just need a little push to figure them out. I like seeing these guys discuss their theories.. and I'm sititng here like: ''yeah, keep going.. that's it, almost there.. just one more thought process..'' and then he stops and I'm like ''ah damn it.. he was so close'' haha. Oh well keep watching boys, nice reactions.. Ya'll haven't even seen Levi at 100%.
Eren's father called the police, remember? So the attack to Mikasa's parents and them killing the kidnappers were recorded.
For the military police knowing about eren and mikasa's story aka self-defense, it was shown that the police came with eren's dad. It was on record. 😊

I get what Diamond Dave is saying, but Levi directly saved his life there. He showed that he wouldn't turn on humanity no matter what, he showed he could control him to the court, and he knew Eren could heal. Eren made a good point, but in doing so he scared the court. Levi making everyone think he thought of Eren as an enemy and had no reservations about harming him if necessary, it makes the plan to retake the wall look more feasible.

In episode 13, when Jean almost gets eaten and you see Annie's face and then an explosion, that scene was redacted. You can look it up, there's several more frames to that scene actually showing you how Annie saved him. I'm not sure why some streaming services don't have it.
I'm fairly certain that the original broadcast version had the cut (presumably to save time either in production of broadcast). It's the dvd/blueray version that has the full scene which some streaming services use.
Ep 13 is one of my favorites to watch. The show makes you so accustomed to the humans always losing. This was humanity’s first victory and it’s a feeling you’ve never felt during this show before. You’re definitely not the only one who felt this!
There’s a reason Captain Levi is a top favorite for a lot of AOT fans, hang in there, you’ll see why. Hands down one of my favorite characters, up there with Goku ❤️

It's easy to forget how difficult it is for regular and even high level people to actually kill a titan reliably, especially after seeing Mikasa and Levi do their thing. We saw in episode 13 how one of the top members of Pixie's squad, which is probably better than most given Pixie's vibes, just get squashed by a random normal titan.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Completely agree that this episode just makes you want to cheer/fight. For me what got me was seeing the soldiers willingly sacrifice themselves because they could now see that they finally had a chance to win.
That’s what was happening when those guys were getting picked up by titans at the end-there weren’t any buildings there which means they couldn’t use their gear, they KNEW they were sacrificing themselves. Just to make sure Eren had a clear path through.

40:15 they got the background info from Military Police. remember Grisha (Eren's dad) called the cops but Eren didn't wait for them to arrive. and when they arrived, one cop commented "a stab from behind straight to the heart. those kids did this?"
