There are some really good fallout lore videos explaining a lot of the nuances and details you wouldn’t get unless you’ve played the game. After I watched a few, i had an incredibly opened eye for how much effort they put into this show as far as details go. Btw, this show has some of the best visuals and set design that I’ve ever seen.

A small thing, but something I appreciated from the writers when rewatching the show: in that intro scene, they made a point of showing that the birthday boy's father kept taking photos throughout the whole party. It's possible that the reason why no one noticed the bomb flash at first was because they had been seeing the camera flash all day long.

@@adventuroushermit2590 I can understand it with a mini nuke for Fat Man launcher, but not for a full size nuclear bomb used in that scene. In Honest Hearts DLC for Fallout New Vegas there are personal logs of a man who survived the bombs that dropped in Salt lake city. He was not blinded because at the moment of an explosion he looked at the opposite direction, but people standing next to him were looking at the explosion and got blinded.

In the Fallout universe, the microchip was never invented, which is why they are in the future, but all of their electronics are vacuum tube-based.

    • @eddmario
      @eddmario 8 місяців тому +54

      Not the microchip, but transistors.
And it's not that they weren't invented, but that they were invented way later on than in our world, so technology evolved to be more like most like 50s sci-fi tech.

    • @READY_OR_NOT
      @READY_OR_NOT 8 місяців тому +10

@@eddmario A microchip (also called a chip, a computer chip, an integrated circuit or IC) is a set of electronic circuits on a small flat piece of silicon. On the chip, transistors act as miniature electrical switches that can turn a current on or off.
Next time you feel like saying something, do some research first.

    • @CliffuckingBooth
      @CliffuckingBooth 8 місяців тому +12

@@READY_OR_NOT From official Fallout wiki: In the Fallout series, one of the aspects of the divergence is the fact that transistors did not became as popular, with vacuum tubes continuing to be the dominant building block of electronics into the 21st century, and the term "chip" typically (but not always) refers to processing units using vacuum tubes, such as the water chip.
You are welcome. Now go do some exercising and calm down.
And btw silicon is actually whats missing in Fallout. From Quora: The technology that is “missing” in the Fallout universe is silicon. We developed silicon chips that make transistors tiny, like microscopic tiny. We did that partly because using transistors for computing used tremendous amounts of electricity. One of the reasons that early computers were so rare was the demand for that electricity. In the Fallout universe, nuclear power provided that electricity. There was less of a need to miniaturize (which reduced energy usage), so the switch to silicon did not happen.

I think you are drastically overestimating the blindness risk range of nuclear blasts. Light follows the inverse-square law -- the intensity falls with the square of the distance from the source. The majority of modern nukes in the world today would probably only pose a blindness risk within a 4-5 mile radius during the day, farther at night if the eyes were adjusted for darkness. Now something like Tsar Bomba? That's a different story. But that first blast was more than far enough away that if it was one of the more common sizes in the 0.5 megaton range, she would have been more than far enough away to, at worst, just be dazzled the way anyone would looking at something like, well, a flash bulb.

To answer a couple of your questions and to give you some spoiler-free background. There are a total of 122 vaults across the US. Every vault is unique and was built with a specific purpose. It is not normal for vaults to be interconnected, so Vaults 31, 32, and 33 are already special in that aspect. These 3 vaults are in Santa Monica, California. This series is not a retelling of any of the video games, but is an entirely new entry into the Fallout franchise. The TV show stays very true to the lore and tone of the games, and to my understanding, is actually considered canon. The show is absolutely littered with easter eggs and references to the games, but you don't need to play any of the games to understand what's going on. A fan of the games will probably understand a lot the context a bit faster, but the show does a very good job of explaining everything you need to know. You guys are in for a ride. Fallout is Retro-Futurism. A future based on the 50's ideas of what the future could be. In the Fallout world they never went all-in on transistor technology and stuck with Vacuum-Tubes and punch machines, pushing that tech further than we ever did. They also went all-in on Nuclear energy and were able to create chems like Rad-Away to overcome radiation, Stimpaks {used by Lucy when stabbed} to heal, UltraJet {red puffer used during the Raid Wedding} to enhance combat, with much more to come. Ghouls are people who have been overdosed with radiation but not enough to kill them outright. There are degrees of ghouls ranging from "looks normal with some ghoul traits" to "talks normal looks dead" to "28 days later" feral, you'll see soon and probably already have by now. The drip bag hooked up to Coop/TheGhoul is something new to the show and not in the games {yet}, a drug to keep Ghouls from going Feral, which I'm sure we'll find out more about over time.

The thing Lucy injects herself with is a Stimpak, an item from the game that is pretty much a "catch-all back to 100hp" item
Other Easter eggs involve (That we can see on your cut):
Lucy discussing skills, repair, science, and speech are in fact skills in the game.
The little cartoon of the vault dweller, the Vault Boy, is a recurring thing.
The Book from the Book Club is a special consumable that improves your skills temporarily
The giant watch, the Pip-Boy, is the main menu in the game.
The Bobblehead is an extremely rare item that would improve a skill permanently
Sugar Bomb, the father's term of endearment, is a consumable in the game.
This might be a stretch, but that goddamn jar Lucy uses to fight back, i swear to god I've seen that same model from Fo3 to Fo76
The flying ship, there is another hovercraft like the one in the game called Prydwen in Fo4
The T-60 is only one of the many, many, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany armor models the series has had.
The yellow structure, where the armors rest, are the workbenches in-game where you create and modify them.
Nuka-cola is exactly what you are thinking. You encounter it literally everywhere, and it restores HP in the game.
The squire carrying that big bag like a caddy is actually something you do in-game with the various companions you can befriend in-game.
Dogmeat is almost everyone's first companion, a German Shepherd.
The baby arm is shot by a gun known as the Junk Jet, you can stuff anything in there and it shoots it out at lethal speed.
That was fun, keep it going guys, what did i miss?

  • @RaedFrost
    @RaedFrost 8 місяців тому +15

I want to give a lot of context and I really hope you guys see this because I feel this will help with your understanding of the show:
In terms of the games, this show has its own original story. It's set in the world of the game and that's what has made this adaptation so good. They have meticulously incorporated all elements from the game into it. The sets, the character motivations, the music, everything. I also love that they don't really feel like they need to explain anything. Those familiar with the games won't need an explanation. Those unfamiliar can easily piece together a lot of what's going on just by the way things are presented on screen and are later revealed in future episodes.
The gore. Now that is straight out of the game. In the game you can customize your character with a set of perks that can help you out in the wasteland. Some are there just to make things more interesting. One of those perks is known as "bloody mess" which makes it so that enemies die in very gory fashion. It's easy to see that some characters in this show has that perk.
Let's talk about Lucy. The way she's introduced is also pretty much out of the game. She's telling us her attributes, her skills. Fallout is mainly an RPG (Role Playing Game) and one of the first things you do is pick your character stats and their main perks. Considering she was raised in a vault shows in her demeaner and it's pretty much how all players start off in the game.
The Ghoul. Radiation is poison, but there are cases of people being mutated by it and turned into these creatures known as ghouls. There are two types. Walton's character is one of the conscious ones. Able to think, talk and function. Others go feral and are by all intents and purposes zombies. They're immune to radiation and are known to be able to live for a long time, though they're not immortal.
I don't feel the need to explain the Brotherhood of Steel because the show does an awesome job going through who they are and what their motivations are.
Now for the vaults. Vault-Tec, the company behind the fallout shelters, constructed 122 vaults across the United States. I'm not going to say much because there's plenty to spoil. All you need to know is that the designs, looks, functions and everything is pretty much 1:1 straight out of the video games. Even the sounds of the doors, computer terminals and everything. In this first episode you learn that Vault 33, 32 and 31 are connected to each other. This is not the case with the rest of the vaults. Each vault has its own design and mission. You'll learn more of this as the season goes on. In the game you learn more of this by finding and exploring these vaults.
The device on the vault dwellers arms are known as Pip-Boys ((Personal Information Processor). In the game it's basically you're in-game menu system. It keeps track of your health, status, inventory, weapons, can detect radio transmissions, play games, etc. In the show it serves the exact same purpose. They use it the way it's meant to be used and that is excellent. Aside from that you have all sorts of things in the background which are all from the game as well. From the bottles of Nuka Cola to the stimpack Lucy uses to heal her wounds. Shows like these, shows like The Last of Us, truly shows that you can make entertaining media based on video games if you truly understand and respect the source material.
I could go on more but I've already said enough. You've started a journey into quite the franchise. If you're up for it, considering you guys are playing things like Red Dead Redemption, you should consider playing Fallout 4 on your gaming channel. If you love the show you'll most likely love that game. No knowledge of the previous games is necessary and it includes all the elements seen in the show.
I hope you enjoy the rest of the season, and remember: War... war never changes...
Edit: Oh! I almost forgot! Yes, the guy was killed by a plastic baby leg. The fat dude was using a weapon known as a "Junk Jet." It's basically a trash shooting gun. In the games you're able to pick up pretty much any piece of trash you can find, be it for crafting, getting resources, selling for caps (bottlecaps are a currency in the Wasteland), etc. Most of it is just junk though. For the most part it would be useless except for that gun. It takes any piece of trash from your inventory and uses it as a lethal projectile.

About Oak's "sounds pretty fast" comment on 200 years being safe after nuclear war, it's actually much slower than in reality. Most of the isotopes created in a nuclear explosion decay fast enough that within a matter of months, most areas would be safe for habitation. The duration of radiation hazard in Fallout is a vast overcorrection that the series uses because the games needed the bombs to be relevant to the post-apocalyptic world. In reality, radiation would be mostly safe within months, and back at normal prewar background levels within a few decades.
Radiation is generally what people first think about nuclear bombs. Its intangibility and its horrifying effects give it a sort of macabre mystique. But really, the most devastating aspect of the bombs are the shockwaves, and in a large scale scenario, nuclear winter which would starve billions. To go even further, fallout is primarily generated by ground blasts, but in a war, in which destruction of cities and military assets is the goal, airblasts would be used, which generate very little fallout, making radiation even less of a threat.
In short, radiation is very dangerous when it is present, but it ain't all it's hyped up to be.

The vaults actually were located in the vicinity of population centers so those assigned a spot in a vault would be able to get to them on short notice.
The baby leg was shot from a gun from the games: the junk jet. It fires whatever random debris you can find to stuff in it.
On whether they got it right or wrong, this OG player (back to Fallout 1, 1997) thinks they got it very right.
This is set in an alternate future where the timeline splits off from ours some time after WWII. Technology is mostly vacuum tube and atomic energy based which is why the tech is so bulky. Essentially think of every "world of tomorrow" type film from the 1950s/early 60s and that's the world of Fallout before the nukes fell. The US also was culturally stuck in the 50s, hence the clothing, cars, and music.
If you'd like an intro into the great war of 2077 that won't really have spoilers for the TV show, check out the intro from Fallout 1: ua-cam.com/video/hG3uBgQmTnk/v-deo.html (remember, this is a game from 1997, so temper your expectations on the graphics quality).

The level of excitement I felt when I saw that you guys did this is insane. I don't think I've ever clicked on a reaction video so fast!
I have finished the whole season. As an avid fan of the games, they absolutely nailed it. It's 100% Fallout. I don't know how they pulled it off, but damn! It's so amazing. The tone is perfect, the satire, sets, costumes, humor, everything. My biggest complaint is that we only have 8 episodes so far. And maybe also that they didn't include any [REDACTED] but I suppose they have to save some things for season 2.
Just a few notes, the item that Lucy injected herself with after getting stabbed is called a stimpak. It's one of the healing items in the games. Lucy herself would be the player character in the games. Most of the games (not all, but most) have you start as a vault dweller who for whatever reason has to venture out into the Wasteland.
In this episode, when the projector gets damaged it catches on fire, and you can see the projection burning up the background, which I thought was a really cool way to sort of mirror what happened to the real world when the bombs fell.
Great video, and I can't wait to see your reactions to all the episodes and hear your thoughts on this truly outstanding show!

The beginning section of the episode still gives me absolute chills and goosebumps. Sets the tone what Fallout really was all about.
To get the context of the beginning, the whole world is already in shambles. In a previous decade before the Sino American War, EU and the Middle East pretty much call it quits. They nuked each other because of the Resource Wars as it affected them hard. Also the 21st century in the pre-Fallout period was already in a bleak future. The world's resources are running low and America already resorted to use nuclear technology. The countries around the world are in turmoil and the hurdles are far from over. There was the plague that killed millions around the world. The world's last resource remains on the case of oil. Deposits of oil was only up and running in the state of Alaska. China sees this as an opportunity and survival. Thus they are gonna take it by force. That kickstarted the Sino-American War.
The entire war was happening for about a decade since 2066 to 2076. In 2077, it gets from bad to worse from there. US illegally annexes Canada by doing the counter attack in Alaska. They sucessfully pushed them out by occupying and passing through Canada. US and the Asian allies are now invading Mainland China for having the war to have an quick end. And just as China and the United States are having a war in the background, the average folks keeps their mindset on peacetime just as everything will be alright. And victory was already in sight. Unfortunately everything was not going to be okay. The nuclear exchange occured in 2 hours and that signifies the end of the Sino-American War, especially the whole world as societies crumbled in the nuclear exchange. This is what it states in the Fallout-universe game lore.
For more context that the stuff you see are technologically-locked in the era of the 1950s and 1960s. The date where the old world ended and entering into a new world was in October 23, 2077.

Oh yeah and for anyone who might not know the weapon that was used to shoot the plastic baby leg into that guy at 25:28 it's called a Rocket It Launcher and they are on Fallout 3 and can shoot any junk or crafting item at enemies and it actually does kill them

It's a fantastic series with awesome performances. Each episode is a banger.
The beauty is that you don't need to have played the games to get the story but if you have its a goldmine of Easter eggs.

At the end of World War 2 we went down a different time line, geared toward Nuclear energy, Transistor wasnt invented till much later (or something like it), and the US is stuck in the 50's. There was resource wars. Which led to the end. I am not giving anything away with the show. This is Fallout history.

Fun fact, in a real nuclear apocalypse, there would be little to no radiation after like 2 weeks.
In lore, some vaults opened up after 25 years.

The attention to detail will be lost on those who haven’t played FO4. For example, the “vases” for wedding flowers. Aluminum cans. 😂 Ubiquitous in the game. Even tiny details like the bolts on the walls. All the references to things in ALL of the games. And the ghoul referring to distractions! You’ll want to watch again after spending some time in the wasteland. DC, Commonwealth, Mojave. ❤ your takes on the show.

fallout is an alternate future of the world, as the people of the 50s would have imagined it, hence why its futuristic but still with an oldies cultural feel

I've never played Fallout, so I have yet to learn about the lore. However, I really LOVED this show, and the fantastic sets, practical effects and acting by Walton Goggin, Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten and Moises Arias were all outstanding in this show. The haunting and terrifying opening in this episode alone had me sold. I appreciate how well this series doesn't need you to rely on the lore of the game, yet it still keeps you engaged. I'm sure the Easter Eggs must be huge for fans of the game.

The thing about the "easter eggs", theyre really arent that many...
By that i mean, easter eggs and references are usually a non functional piece of eye candy. They didnt easter egg the show to death... they made all the in game items functional pieces of the show. The outfits were great, the sets were fantastic... and they had stimpaks because thats simply what they used, out of a medkit on the wall. One of the raiders used an inhaler drug called Jet because that what they use... raider camps is where you find that in game. They didnt force a bunch of fan service in, they just used what was natural in that built world. And didnt bother discussing it. I feared they'd EXPLAIN a bunch of stuff and they didnt.
The only real easter eggs may have been a few Traits (in game you choose bonus traits every few levels that give advantages) like Bloody Mess, Ghoulish, and nightvision.

As a long time fan of the games, this was definitely a love letter to the gamers! But it is equally entertaining for those who know nothing about the games at all. My mom has been watching it with me and she likes it, which surprises me because I didn't think it would be something she liked. You're in for a treat! If you do plan to play the games, Fallout 4 may be the closest to the show design-wise.

They way I heard it explained was this story takes place within the established world, but doesn't necessarily follow the stories of the games themselves. So to me, that just means this is simply a new story in the world of fallout.

Technically speaking in Fallout lore the Great War is a separated war than the American/Chinese war even tought the former caused the latter. The previous war was over after America defeated China at Anchorage. Then China retaliated by starting the Great War immediately after. A war that lasted for only 2 hours.

Great reaction, as usual, gentlemen. This show is a video game adaption and uses video game logic in certain situations. For example, the large syringe Lucy uses after being stabbed is a Stimpak, a medical item from the games that insta-heals wounds and regenerates health points and in later episodes other miraculous healing potions come in handy. And the gun that shoots the baby doll leg is a Rock-It launcher, a weapon from the games that fires all sorts of junk items in an exaggerated and unrealistic manner.

The nice thing about the fallout world is while there is a canon timeline so to speak, each story & its characters is self contained, but has universal factions and concepts that you really don’t have to know anything about so this is a fine way to start!

That contraption that u saw that shoots basically junk at people is called the Rock-It-Launcher. The barrel is huge so it can shoot pretty much use anything as ammo. Dishes, tin cans, teddy bears, pool balls, basketballs, baseballs, books, lawn gnomes.😅 U guys need to play these games. They r so addictive. And the music while your fighting is so awesome and out of place but at the same time it fits. The Fallout universe is insane. Imagine listening to Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby while absolutely murdering everyone or being a good guy. I love this show so far.

This show captures the feel of the games perfectly. If you'd played one of the games you'd see so many easter eggs from the game. From the obvious Nuka-Colas, to the little bobblehead of the Vault-tec boy, to even the little odds that in the game you'd collect as sources of scrap materials. The show is fantastic

The feel of the show is 100% the feel of Fallout. The humor, violence, gore, and the overall world itself. It is really making me want to dust off my copies of the Fallout games. It's good to see that even people without much knowledge of the game can enjoy it, and there are also plenty of Easter eggs for the fans as well.
