You know its good when you come back all these years later .
Legit I clicked on this video and immediately had the thought "Wait, what era is this from", and then I was like "Yes, Kiss Each Other Clean, my favorite point in his career".
this dude looks like his music sounds
Civil war general
I really, REALLY, wish I could like this comment more than once
😁
He sounds like his music looks
Genius poet
I've faithfully listened to this single Tiny Desk Concert steadily since it came out over 10 years ago. And it's always like listening the first time.
me too :)
You should maybe get checked for dementia buddy
I cannot believe this was posted so long ago 🤯 still one of my all time favorite Tiny Desk Concerts.
Me too.
@@antonketr7259 oof I'm sorry the people in your life don't pay attention to you, but this isn't the way to get it
I met Sam in the parking lot of a South Carolina grocery store. He was, unsurprisingly, friendly and humble.
jordan bullard You can tell from this. He looks almost embarrassed at the end. Like he doesn't know how good he is.
You are so lucky my friend
He is so nice and friendly and charming,
LUCKY!
Ahhhhh I live in SC and now I hope I meet him!
"Half Moon" 00:00 - 03:00
"Big Burned Hand" 04:34 - 07:39
"Tree By The River" 09:45 - 12:48
"Naked As We Came" 15:09 - 17:20
you're wonderful
:)
We need to bump this comment up to the top.

There is something about the pitch of his voice that is as soothing as coffee.
His voice fills in the cracks
Well put. He's got some serious talent
Coffee soothes the soul you aren't wrong
"As soothing as coffee" is an amazingly succinct phrase. I'm... gonna have to remember that one.
NPR should really offer audio downloads for these videos, or some compilation albums. So many of these are absolutely incredible.

"You can download the video by subscribing to the All Songs Considered Tiny Desk Concert Podcast at npr.org/tinydeskconcerts"
I've done it a few times.. they obviously still contain the banter between song, but all-in-all enjoyable to have
You can download these very easily with a tool called YTD (UA-cam Downloader) it's not free but it's very inexpensive. These concerts are the best of the best music anywhere on UA-cam. HATS OFF to the NPR TD staff - sound engineers esp. Better sound and energy than ANY studio albums from these artists.
just add "bajar" after the www.
ready!
His finger picking is incredible. Especially the rhythmic tapping in his right hand during the first song.
I noticed as well! So unconcerned yet on point. Amazing,!
Might as well have been titled "Best of Sam Beam". Still love this after all those years. Especially love Half Moon and Tree by the River. I wish these versions were on Spotify.
naked as we came will always be one of the most beautiful songs of all time.
For me, no one has ever been able to paint a picture so clearly like Samuel Beam does when he sings. His story telling above anyone else, so clear and vivid and create a feeling a recall. Like I'm living the memory myself.
***** Kendrick Lamar is also a very good story teller, I know it's a different genre all together but I admire how he tells his stories, very poetic...Sam Beam is the best in his genre...he has the ability to make you evaluate your whole life, past relationships etc
Definitely agree on what you said about Sam. I remember about 2 years ago the first time I listened to his music, I mean I had heard it before, but when I actually sat down and listened to it I found myself with this feeling of needing to right my wrongs, not so much as guilt but pride. That's how you know you've stumbled upon something amazing. Never listed to Kendrick much, might consider it. In that genre Lupe Fiasco is my favorite story teller. "Luck Push II" is a modern marvel of rhymed story telling.
***** while i agree in so many ways you really should check out some leonard cohen.
+Diego Lugo Ray LaMontagnevis amazing at it as well
Thank you, all of you for the recommendations! I'll be sure to check them all out
Listening to these songs while at my best friends house in LV, it's 105 degrees @10pm. Drinking cold beer and catching up on old times. Best times ever.
He has such a great falsetto and great transition in and out of it, sounds so natural. This guy speaks to my heart.
Best version of Half Moon ever
I agree! This is the only video I watch when I want to hear that song
YES!!!!! omg I can't get enough of this version
If only the album recording was half this awesome.
No joke man. Seriously listened to it a thousand times more here than the album.
Agreed, can only listen to this.. need this on spotify. Same goes for this version of Tree by the River imo.
"Mary Anne, do you remember when we had french fries?"
French fries are amazing no matter the occasion.
lool I do not yet know of this lyric. I hope to discover!
Mary Anne, do you remember,
That horse that kicked the shit out of me when I turned my back,
When we were seventeen?
-- scrawled on a crumpled note in Sam Beam's studio.
I think this is my favourite Tiny Desk concert. By far, this is brilliant.
I didn't hear Naked As We Came in many years and the sudden return of the unique emotions of his music made me cry
Naked As We Came is now a decade old. Damn.
So nows probably fifteen
Vitor Moreira Marques *16 as of two days ago.
coming up on two decades my friend
20 years now
So is this comment~
I can't stop listening to this! he seems so genuinely grateful, and he's incredibly talented. wish I would've started listening to him sooner!
I woke up with this version of Big Burned Hand stuck in my head....and I cannot believe this was up loaded almost 10 years ago. Idk how time moves so fast and so slow at the same time.
What I find very genuine about this is when the office breaks out into laughter. Moments like this in the Tiny Desk Concerts really remind me that this is more than just a live show, it's an intimate show. There's banter and connection with the audience on a personal level and listening to or watching the artist interact with that is so fascinating.
What a great observation. Can you recommend any TD concerts that have that sorta connection?
I love the line, "Happy just to be with you, and you were happy for me"
I love his accent! That's a very pretty Southern accent. Music is lovely, too, of course.
I hear southern and british mixed
Communism Works Because I Say It Does South Carolina!!! Proud to have him from our state.
literally could listen to half moon non-stop...
I love the fact that even after all this time and all the experience he has playing in front of crowds, he acts a little uncomfortable in front of a crowd. It's that vulnerability that comes out in his music.
+Jeff W I agree, its sort of moves ya
Commands a room of people but is somehow nervous doing it. Gotta love the honesty of it.
I think I've listened to this like 300 times.
Not only is his music freakin amazing but I love how chill he is with the audience. He is an awesome performer and I cant wait to see him in 2 weeks!
Sam, i know your a star now, but i will never forget you as the man from my state. from that small town they call Chaplin, SC. making beautiful music that makes me proud to say I'm from South Carolina.
he seems like such a humble guy, would love to see him live! he's one of my idols
I saw I&W at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa in 2015. Halfway through the show, Sam sent the band backstage, took a stool up to the microphone, and said "Ok, what do you guys wanna hear?"
1:56 I really like the way this part progresses into a howl while he sings about a half moon.
Tree By The River is outrageously good.
If Sam Beam, and Jim James made a song together, im pretty sure the universe would implode.
Eh...probably worth it.
+Electric Kool-Aid If Sam Beam and Jim Beam made an album it would probably sound like a whispery drunk guy
+Brian Ivy Sam Beam and Jim Beam are often all the company a person needs.
So worth it
by far my most listened-to tiny desk, even after all these years. it’s perfection
Constantly come back to this video. Love love love love it
Theres something about seeing musicians like this who are really down to earth that makes their music even better. Makes me feel connected to the musician and the music.
"Kiss each other clean" , in my top five albums for me in the last 20 years.
I get lost in this video every single time I watch it. This is the definition of painting pictures with music.
What is it about his voice that makes me misty-eyed almost every time? I don't even need to hear the lyrics, it's just the tone. Sheesh.
He's so adorable! I just want to snuggle in some warm blankets and blast everything he's ever made but I fear that I wouldn't come out for several weeks.
This is why I wish I saw more live music. This version of Half Moon is so much better than the studio version. It's gorgeous.
Go see more live music!
Umbra53 God dammit man, you're right! Brb.
I dunno, the album version is pretty damn good.
There are few that surpass Samuel Beam. He is a god of modern folk music. Love him :D
+Rhys Gabriel And only now did I realize that he doesn't even use all his fingers to pick...
You guys need to call him again!
+Pedro Freitas it could happen soon. he's playing the lincoln in DC with Jesca Hoop in April.
Check out the newest tiny desk
Austin G Horiii Sheat!!! thanks for the good news
sadly they said they never have the same band twice :/
^^well they had him twice...
Grateful to have found these concerts at 34 years old. Some of the artists I know, some I've never heard of. I especially like that some of them play stripped-down acoustic versions of their songs.I recently started getting into indie folk music, don't know if he fits that genre. But happy to have broken out of listening to only artist I know. Take care everybody.
+Ron Smith I started listening to folk/indie folk a few years ago, and am finding awesome new bands/channels all the time- I just came across these NPR concerts last week, and they are awesome to say in the least. Here's a few acts I like alot and would recommend: Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle, Ray Lamontagne, Richard Shindell, and Alexi Murdoch.
GR Selects Thanks for the recommendations! Check out The Milk Carton Kids tiny desk.
...good for you man...
Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel)
Jim James (My Morning Jacket/Monsters of Folk)
Scott & Seth Avett (the Avett Bros)
Robin Pecknold (Fleet Foxes)
...enjoy...
Grateful I've found these concerts at 16 years-old.
Thomas Kittock How's 18 treating you?
I've watched this like 50 times in the last 3 days. Can't stop. This version of half moon is just so good. I could keep it on repeat all day.
This is the best version of tree by the river. He needs to release a recording from this on its own.
Keep coming back to this video just for that song. So good
same@@jayceeblue
Amazingly talented. Hell of a guitarist. Tuned that guitar pitch perfect quickly by ear
I just love how raw he is. No effects. No reverb. Just his voice and a guitar.
This man’s music has carried me through some very hard times. Thank you to you all x
First time I've ever come across this man and I think I fell in love a little
That is the accurate reaction
As a heterosexual male I couldnt agree more
Zoe Guest He's hot in so many ways. Gentleman looking too. And his talent is above everything. 👌🏻❤️
Yea he's lovely, and so talented :) x
4:43 to 7:33 is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard with my ears.
Be still my heart. Sam does things to me no man has ever been able to do
his voice and presence in general never fail to give me chills and bring tears to my eyes. i wish this live performance was available on streaming services like spotify etc.
He sounds amazing live. A true talent.
I was 13 and riding my bike around a lake and listen to this NPR video every summer. I’m 22 and now I just reflect on the beauty of this. I wish I could go back. But life goes on
The acoustic version of tree by the river is light years better then album version
Larry Francoeur I concur, as are most of his live versions in comparison to their album counterparts.
I like the album version more but I like Half Moon more here.
Stefan Steebz exactly! I always felt that there's something special when its just Sam and his guitar. You lose that feeling on most of his studio version. But he's so freaking great in these kind of shows!
I really wish he just did an acoustic "bare bones" sort of album.
Same with big burned hand
I listened to this Tiny Desk (and Sam Beam) all the time when I was in high school. Coming back to this years later, tree by the river speaks to me in a new way. There are blue-eyed birds and all that, though my Maryanne passed away. The "but I wondered to who, and what it is you're saying today", feeling that.
For sure
this is the best I've heard him sound. pretty amazing
Such a beautiful beautiful beautiful man. I wish more musical groups and musicians would put as much heart and soul into their music as much as Beam does. It would truly make a difference in today's music industry is all musicians did.
What an artist. Acoustic perfection. A million thumbs up.
I've watched this probably more than 50 times over the last year. Still coming back. Love you Iron and Wine.
For me "The Tallest Man on Earth" and Sam have been the best NPR vids. This made me smile from start to finish. Top man!!
This is the essence of American Folk music. Clear conveyed thoughts, raw acoustic original songs. Simple, complex and inspiring.
Im glad he had chosen Naked as we came... one of my favorite.
Had the pleasure to personally meet him. Shake his hand and have a conversation. Awesome person. Oh my god.
Dear 50 year-old me, be this man.
+Fez @vhe1ssu this dude is deff not 50 so you'd be doin pretty good if you were like this when u were 30 lol.
still, he has an old soul for sure
turns out hes 41
beards always add 10 years
yeah im 23 look closer to 30 with my beard... if i shave im instantly 17
I've liked him your many years and just found this today! I didn't realize the Tiny Desk Concert series has been amazing for so long.
Sam Beam is my spirit animal.
still watching this 2021, I so love your voice.. very beautiful.. ;) cheers..
9:40- Tree by the River gets me almost every time
As amazingly talented he is and how well he has done, it amazes me how nervous he seems. Love this guy's stuff!
Clicked this at random. This is one chilled out and talented dude. He's got it figured out.
Yup I just listen to this version of Half Moon 3 times in a row before hitting the clubs, maybe 4.
I need "Now that's what I call Tiny Desk" Volumes 1 through 64 to be real and not in my imagination and I need to own them on CD and keep them in the giant book of cds I keep under my passenger seat in my car so I can switch between them in all 6 of the CD slots I have.
A voice meant for acoustic story-telling. Food for the open mind and the closed eyes. Thank you Tiny Desk.
I love when Sam finishes a song he just shrugs and goes eh, there ya go
One of the most important parts of being and artist is being able to not only have your music resonate with you but with others as well.
Great songwriter and seems like a very humble guy too. Good stuff indeed :)
Thank you Sam Beam. Awesome music artist 😊❤️🎶😊❤️🎶
These versions are painfully better than the album versions in my opinion.
Painfully better is right. I was introduced to Iron and Wine by tiny desk, and after listening to the album these songs were on, I was so disappointed.
Pure unadulterated top drawer talent. Breathtaking. Literally.
He should write a book on songwriting.
and then a book on bookwriting
Possibly one of the most comfortably charismatic figures in music today.
Will you come play tree by the River at my wedding? She said yes and this is the best song ever!
I grew up listening to this man's music and hearing it now, stumbling across this old video when I have free time in college, I feel emotions I didn't know I could. These songs are pure nostalgia
the way he laughs at 4:19 blew me away :D
+Loose Ends almost 420
dang it :(.
laughs like its 420
beat me to it :D
He grew on me; after I watched two videos and THEN this one, I liked him. His music makes me cry, but it's a happy cry. I wish all music could be this thoughtful. :)
Wow! Realised halfway through the second song i've been listening with my eyes shut and mouth wide open. Such a wonderfully smooth sounding voice, love Sam's performance.
Sam Beam is a true gift to us all
Tree by the river at 9:44 is one of my best discoveries in my life. I love that song
he makes me proud to be an american..
+Ben Wait - How many Sam Beams would it take to erase the embarrassment caused by Donald Trump? I can't even face my European friends right now. Yes. At least we have Sam Beam.

The falsetto high notes on the break of tree by river always get me. Incredibly beautiful.
Woah. Sam Beam for king of the river.
Maybe it's just me but beyond his music - when you hear him discuss things in general and his inspirations and reasoning you can just see that he's a genius on a different level.
weed coffee, morning paper, tiny desk concerts.
Lotta respect for you brother
Is weed coffee two separate things? Because if not, I need it...
i brew my coffee with cannabis.
Interesting. Do you just throw the Cannabis in with the grounds? Does it smell when you make it? How effective is it?
you must throw them within the brew, it doesn't smell like weed, but if you have a good scent it could smell like an edible if anything, very effective, just as long as it's good trees.
The most amazing thing about him is that despite his talent and fame, he's still so humble, in his speech and his songs.
This man is attractive in many ways.
Oh goodness i saw them in concert so many years ago.... I forgot how much i love them.... So gentle.
I think half the views are mine
Jesse Leonard they're mine now
only 2 of us watched this? weird
Hello I am the other half
Half... moon?
Nope still mine
I’ve watched this monthly for about 5 years! This version of Half Moon is absolutely stunning.. I’ve seen Sam 3 times and looking forward to more concerts in the future! Thank you Tiny Desk for all you do! xx
