Fred again..: Tiny Desk Concert

When Fred again.. first proposed a Tiny Desk concert, it wasn't immediately clear how he was going to make it work - not because he lacked creativity, but because translating purely electronic music at the Desk is a daunting task for anyone. How would an artist, whose performances take the form of DJ sets in front of massive audiences, curate an intimate and unique experience? But what the British songwriter and producer came up with is a reminder of what a Tiny Desk is at its best: an opportunity for artists to challenge themselves in such a way that it almost feels like they're making new music, all while sticking to what feels true to them. For Fred again.. that meant re-learning the marimba, playing the vibraphone, singing at the piano and looping sounds and beats - all at the same time. He began his set with "Kyle (i found you)," recreating the song's melody on the marimba while clips of featured poet Kyle "Guante" Tran Myhre reciting the work "Love In The Time of Undeath" appeared on-screen. Sitting at the piano, he faded the remnants of "Kyle (i found you)" into "Roze (forgive)," which features Fred again.. triggering vocals sampled from the artist I am Roze, whose powerful facial expressions were magnified on a screen. In a surprising pivot, the primary vocals on the following track, "Me (heavy)," came from Fred again.. himself, with no manipulation, creating a vulnerable sense of intimacy in the space. A flurry of looped piano keys marked the transition to "Delilah (pull me out of this)," with guest vocals pulled from pop singer Delilah Montagu's 2021 track "Lost Keys." By his set's end, concluding with "Faisal (envelops me)," Fred again.. was back at the piano finally resting after moving seamlessly through a jam-packed Tiny Desk.

There's a melancholy to his music, like holding on to someone you love while sailing the open seas, running low on supplies, no land in sight.
Yet there's hope in love.
Hope beyond the vast horizon.
I can imagine. After his life of people, party and love in his business, and then corona. No love, no people, no parties, no exstacy. Cold turkey. Wow. Thats a hard hitter.
His partner passed away during the pandemic
Oh wow, did´nt know that. I discovered him as an artist via the pandemic albums, and there is so much pain in some tracks. This info explains alot. Thanks
It's funny. One of the reason I love him so much is that I am autistic and music is the main way I connect with my emotions. I really can't interpret my emotions in my day to day life. Fred's music has allowed me to experience more complex emotions that I didn't think possible. It's incredible. I don't know how he does it, but man.
No words.. Best Tiny Desk Concert ever, hands down.. Not a single trace of arrogance, my man is totally immersed, sharing his soul with the audience from the get go until the very last second. Unbelievable.. Absolute legend..
Wonderfully moving.

It's early morning on New Years Day, and I foolishly agreed to come in to work. It's cold and gloomy out, no one else is here today, and I was scrolling through UA-cam when I came across Fred's Tiny Desk Concert. I am so glad I didn't scroll past. I have been glued to the screen for it's entirety. I was a bit bummed out to be at work today, I am mildly hungover, quite tired, and yet the past 27 minutes feel like they are the perfect proper intro to what will be a monumental and fantastic year ahead. Thank you NPR, thank you Fred. Happy New Year everyone!
Love this comment mate. Hope the year has treated you well so far
So awesome mate 💛
Fred’s music is what I imagine goes through someone’s mind as their life is flashing before their eyes. Timeless music.
It’s like seeing your whole life before your eyes and realizing you almost exclusively remember love. All the feelings for the people and places were different types of love. That’s what it feels like to me. “Your love envelopes me.”
before they die.
accurate way to describe this
From my experience, it’s what you feel when you have an outer body experience. When your life is flashing before your eyes it’s much more frantic. When you think you’ve died there’s this period of stillness and weightlessness that I would align with Fred’s music for sure.
Fred using the Tiny Desk as an instrument in the Tiny Desk set is proof he is the ultimate innovator!!!
Had to get the tempo exactly right to match the video later on too. Impressive.

I feel like Fred is the culmination of so many shared ideas from the world of electronic music. He's the producer we all wanted to be.
Agree. A lot of electronic music the last 10 years has breaks just so you know when the drop is. I think Fred has created a new template which brings out soo many emotions you cant wait for the break so you can hug someone.
That's exactly what crossed my mind; this is gorgeous.
Well said
So true. A lot of us amateur producers walked so Fred could run. The concept of this performance isn't new by any means, but Fred has it polished in a way that only someone who came at the time he did, could do. The promise of this was sold to a generation of Beta testing bed room producers who gave up, grew up etc before they could put their 10k hours in, with the tools that actually did the job. That takes absolutely nothing away him, but just saying he is standing on the shoulders of many. And it's a beautiful thing.
@@globeatin couldn't agree more, totally understand what you're saying. And yeah, it takes nothing away from Fred. I just think it's less likely that he and many others would exist without all the precedent: and I'm sure he'd agree, he's a humble chap by all accounts! Besides, that's what music is. This is magic, man. I'm not a particularly emotional person, I seldom cry or even shed a tear. But I'm listening to this and I can't help but be moved to tears. There's something in Fred's ability to choose the most evocative vocal samples from real life people, building emotional energy with his music, but leaving enough room for you to fill in the gaps with your own stories. Hands down the best tiny desk ever made. Sorry Mac, I love you, but i only cried twice during yours, Fred got me 4 times.

The unimaginable pain I'm going through right now... This, assures me everything will be okay. I can't thank you enough, Fred! This is a gift! I appreciate you ❤

@@cefrio My wife had a miscarriage. Thank you for your kind words brother
@@siphiwomzekandaba your welcome, i ment every word, be strong bless
Going through a lot too. And I may not understand how you feel completely, but know that you’re not alone. This Tiny Desk set is also getting me through it. Sending you all my love.
@siphiwomzekandaba I feel your pain. My Condolences.
i’m about to play this again & again & again & again…
Nostalgia. Like a lonely astronaut on a distant planet recalling his friends on Earth.
One of the most impressive performances on NPR.
I discovered Fred again watching this a few months ago and started to listening to him. According to Spotify I'm now in his top 1% of global listeners and he was my top played artist this year. Thank you Tiny desk.
He's my top artist this 2023 and he's one of my biggest plot twist of the year.
The most impressive part of this performance is the fact that his earbud stayed in the entire time ...
All jokes aside, I cry every time I hear this. Such pure emotion, such a beautiful performance. This is something I will never stop coming back to. Truly incredible
So glad I have been introduced to Fred Again by REN.
Incredible stuff.
We deserve this record in Spotify ❤
Heck, a Vinyl pressing would be nice.
UA-cam music is where its at🎉
This just blew me away. I was so grateful when I came to the comments to see how many others felt the same. My husband and I love Fred Again.. and tiny desk concerts. My husband watched this and was very touched. He insisted I take some time to watch. I totally teared up too. We laid in bed, closed our eyes and listened again together with the lights off. We don't get much peace or time alone together with 2 little kids. This was a magical moment though. Electronic music has never touched our souls quite like this. This tiny desk concert was powerful. Our 3 year old also just adores Fred's music. She dances and sings her little heart out to it during our family dance parties. Thank you Fred for being a light to these parents this year. It takes a lot to be vulnerable and put yourself out there, so happy for your success.
this was so beautiful and touching to read :')
Omg! My husband and I did the same thing! We listened 2x through eyes closed-crying. So grateful for this. ❤
omg I'm imagining your little family dance parties, so cute! I'm so glad you have this moment of peace, it's amazing how music can touch us like that
This comment touched me so much, thanks for sharing ❤
I had never heard of this artist before now; I've been watching Tiny Desk concerts since 2008. This is the best Tiny Desk I've seen thus far.
I can see why you inspired Ren...wow
In a time where people struggle to focus on anything longer than 30 seconds Fred turns up and delivers something you 100% can not take your eyes off this was a master piece thanks Fred
Can we all give thanks to Josh Rogosin for the immaculate mix of this performance?!
A very crisp mix
The tiny desk drum loop is EXACTLY why Fredagain is one of the best. This was one of the most emotionally encapsulating tiny desk sets I’ve ever seen. I felt like he gave us every piece of his heart.
And the music he was able to make live, as a one man band…. Absolutely insane. 🔥🔥
fred again makes music from the soul. truly beautiful, fred
If you ever feel like you have lost hope in humanity. Just remember people like Fred again exist.
how about... that you, yourself, exist?
he is just a family member of the royal elite and has a privileged life
@@Superanima7He may be privileged and have access to opportunities most don’t. But at the same time, he is very talented. Very few people could do what he does. Both can be true
@@deniskaranja9783idk if you took the comment the wrong way or if I did.
I'm pretty sure the commentor meant that if you feel like you've lost hope in humanity then remember that people like fred exist. I think he meant in a good way.
I could be wrong but that's how I read it anyway.
@@Superanima7well he's obviously putting that privilege to good use. He's giving you his soul. I've never seen anything like this from 1 man.
Don't think most people will be ready to be blown away like I was the first time I seen him play.. unbelievable talent... much love from dublin
I’m seeing him in June for parklife I can’t wait 🎉🎉
I flew to NY to see him in October! Seeing him live is an experience
I saw him play please.
Fred Again... What have you just done? Incredible! Thank you for this mini concert!
I had the opportunity to see Fred in his after party in São Paulo, and it's mad to see how he can make people feel such extreme emotions. In his DJ set, I felt pure joy, danced, sweated my whole body and went totally nuts for 2 hours straight. Now, I've sat down through this whole video with tears in my eyes, feeling happy, sad, nostalgic, grateful, and completely out of myself. Fred himself is art at its purest form, I am just glad to be alive at the same time he's doing all of it.
Just beautiful ❤

This is more spiritual than any church I've ever been to.
It's always been the music, even at church
WE GONNA MAKE IT THRU
I keep coming back to this. It's a masterpiece. Makes me cry and I don't know why. Insane.
It makes me cry too. It’s so amazing!! 🥰🥲
The way he plays Delilah (pull me out of this) is ducking the greatest thing my ears have heard.
As a 60s-80s pianist & percussionist, this is mind blowing, today's depth, breadth & multilayered music possibilities!!! Fred's music you feel, not just hear....realized I was holding my breath, saving this 💥🔥🌟💖🎶🎵🙌👏
Definitely hit a vibe that just takes me away. Amazing performance and incredible soundbuilding too, dude's got a beautiful mix style with his piano and electronics

Every possible emotion in this music. I meditate on it, it takes me places. Fred…wow 🫶
I can give no greater compliment than this - Not many people are able to be more than what they are..................... but this man in this moment of time, he is the music ❤
Fred is the epitome of when a human being is so perfectly in tune with sound. The ability to perfectly create from a feeling. This was amazing.
