    It's hard to overstate the kindness and good-natured humor Bono and The Edge brought to the Tiny Desk. When they first arrived at the NPR Music offices, Bono spoke on an imaginary phone, "The talent's here! The talent's coming through," poking fun at their own fame, while carrying The Edge's guitar. (The Edge called Bono the best roadie he's ever had.) The two never stopped beaming, like two overjoyed newcomers thrilled at the chance to play for someone.
    The performance was a preview of U2's new album, Songs Of Surrender, featuring stripped-down versions of songs from across the band's catalog. To help pull off several reimagined songs from the 2000 album All That You Can't Leave Behind, Bono and The Edge invited a teen choir from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., to join them. During rehearsals, Bono told the students to think of "Beautiful Day" as the kind of "post-drinking" singalong you'd bellow with friends after leaving a bar. He then quickly realized none of them are old enough to drink, before feigning a heart attack.
    Traveling without bassist Adam Clayton or drummer Larry Mullen Jr., Bono and The Edge made the trip from Ireland to the States specifically for the Tiny Desk, arriving in D.C. after five days of rehearsals at Bono's New York apartment. When they settled in for the performance, they treated the office to four songs, including a deeply emotional version of "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of," written for the late INXS singer Michael Hutchence, and a reworked version of "Walk On," which Bono said was inspired by and dedicated to the people of Ukraine.

    I saw them on May 27, 1983. I remember the date because I was an OBSESSED 14 year old fan. Me and my sister and her friend waited in the lobby at the Benson hotel in Portland after the show to try to get autographs. ( The nicest hotel in town, we just assumed they would stay there) They never showed, so we we drove home, disappointed, but spirits lifted from an incredible show. We happened to pass by the street leading down to the back of the Paramount Theater. We saw buses and a few people. We quickly turned down the street, parked jumped out of the car, and got to meet Bono and Edge just as they were leaving. (Adam and Larry were already on the bus) They signed the back of my shirt and gave us a hug, and boarded the bus. My 14 year old self would have never been able to imagine my 54 yr old self watching this with a tear in my eye all these years later.

      Yes, I understand he has to protect his instrument and age is a factor. I am a long-time U2 fan and always will be but...the energy and fizz that Bono once delivered have dissipated...and that's fine...it's just taking me a little to grow accustomed to how he sings now. Bono can still deliver in-your-face energy if he so desires but he must pick his moments carefully nowadays.

      @xxyes8879 I can’t agree. While it’s true his voice improved somewhat as the Vegas Sphere concerts have continued, at the beginning he was awful. I’d say 89-93 was his best timeline for vocal performance and that’s 30 years ago. He’s about to turn 64, his voice isn’t getting better.

    These tiny desk concerts are something special, man, can't describe what it does... The vibe, so soothing, it takes me away to a time and a placeI've never been before.

    • @JordanSugarman
      @JordanSugarman 8 місяців тому +1

      The whole concept is that it's like you're attending a tiny, private concert. When you go to a regular concert you're typically in a noisy venue with hundreds (or in this case, thousands) of screaming fans, and massive amps that distort everything and make it impossible to really appreciate the music. Here you have a small gathering with minimal amplification, everyone being quiet and enjoying the vibe. So there's a level of direct connection with the audience that isn't normally possible. And I feel like the artists really appreciate that, too. Having all those screaming fans is great, but sometimes you just want people to shut up and listen when you're performing.
