His speaking voice is so beautiful. It kind of flows so even and it's soothing to listen to. I'd love to have him read my favourite book to me by a crackling fire.

Naomi Martin He does that for charity sometimes. I paid $5,000 for him to read "The Giving Tree" to me and my girlfriend (her favorite book) for her birthday last year. He read it over Skype. It was beautiful. We didn't have a fire going, though. Next time. He said he'd donate the money to animal rescue.

+david letterman Really, 5 grand to read something over Skype? Not to be a dick, but this isn't too believable. :/

      Ray Klish
Yes, but you missed the part about the proceeds going to charity. That was a big part of it as well. I'd rather pay for something I like and have the money go somewhere good. And of course the $5k is a bit overstated as one receives a tax deduction, so it was more like $3,500.

Hey Sam! Stop putting yourself down - "this or that wasn't so elegant" "that was sparse". All the way down here in tiny New Zealand you have been my favourite musician since I got my hands on a bootlegged copy of your most budget lo-fi unreleased home recordings in 2005. Everything you have produced is incredibly beautiful, from the most basic of acoustic guitar hushed melodies through to your masterfully arranged "symphonies". I saw you live in Wellington with a ten piece band back in 2008 and while it was one of the best live shows I've ever seen in my life, nothing can beat returning to your stripped back home recordings. Just you, me, and your guitar. I think this is when I'm most moved by your innate power as an artist.

Ohh Sam Beam, your music will always have a place in my heart. The 4AD session he did a while back is my favourite, whenever I listen to it it brings me back to my time of solitude with the horses and animals in the Canadian wilderness. Very fond memories of a simpler time. Also countless hours of playtime on my Ipod backpacking through Southeast Asia, when I did not have too much music available to me...

I have became a fan of this, indie folk ish I guess you could call coffee shop genre, the older I get the more and more I appreciate it. I come from a blues and rock background, but since I started playing with the wife, things have moved in this direction, and I am happy about that. Its something completely different, and I am definitely enjoying playing it, and finding these musicians singers songwriters that are fantastic but off the radar of average folks. Should they be more well known. Absolutely.

Thanks KEXP! Miss that time in my subjective musical experience, 2007, when so many great bands were appearing from out of nowhere with these magical folkish sounds. Felt like a link had been re-connected. While many of them seem to have fizzled with age, or cultural forces of voracious cruelty, Sam Beam is among those few whose music only gets better.

I agree with other comments here that Sam is so much better when he strips things down. Just him and his guitar is so much more intimate, and so much better than their produced studio equivalents. His thoughtfulness really shines through as a solo act, in much the same way that Kelly Joe Phelps is better with just his guitar. Less is more.

Samuel Beam sounding like James Taylor?
“Lion’s Mane” is a classic track from his first album, “The Creek Drank the Cradle” (2002). Play it again (16:50) and rethink what you’ve just said. He improved loads on the original and delivered this refined version. It’s very generous of him to share his awe-inspiring music with us and he’s being genuinely modest when he said (6:02) the album “Kiss Each Other Clean” (2011) isn’t “quite as elegant” as “Ghost on Ghost” (2013). By the way, I don’t think Iron & Wine needs a 12 piece band, for Sam + acoustic guitar = perfect chemistry. When it comes to distinguished, brilliant musicians, bands are an unnecessary distraction. I hope he goes back to basics on his next albums.
So there’s no way Sam Beam would ever sound like JT.

Greetings from a fellow editor and aspiring director. Audio sounds great, but I couldn't finish the first song because the straight cuts were jarring. Many of your cuts were too late, and I'm guessing you did this in a multi-camera editor and just clicked to choose your cuts. Live music videos require much more precision when editing. If you're going to use straight cuts, you HAVE to anticipate the beat and cut a little bit before it to give the viewer a chance to get ready for it. Cross dissolves may have worked as an alternative.

if you really couldnt finish the first song you need re evaluate how you listen to music. there was nothing wrong with it just enjoy what your listening too
