Hi! This video is basically me. Did years of research on my breed, waited three years to find someone worth buying from and then buying supplies I researched as well while I counted down the days to bringing home puppy. You’d think I’m crazy but I actually took on two puppies at once… ON PURPOSE (despite the entire internet telling me not to, and yes I researched littermate syndrome lots.) I wanted to give up soooo many times. It took exactly three months before life became at least somewhat livable again. 90 days, please stick with them for 90 days. Puppies are SELFISH and it can be so hard for new puppy/new pet owners to wrap their head around. You feel like you give and give and give, but get virtually no effort from them in return. Then one day out of seemingly nowhere, you don’t have a potty accident, they don’t chew anything but their toys, don’t cry when you leave and they listen to you when you ask them to do something. There’s still tons of training to do but if someone had told that if I just stuck with it for 90 days, I’d have two pretty well behaved sister dachshunds who are handling the beginnings of puberty with only faint training backslide, I would not have believed you. The amount of times I was in tears is astronomical and getting frustrated seems far away as we enter their sixth month of life. I can’t wait for the next 90 days 🥰 And I just want to say give it more time and when you’re mad, take a break from puppy. Give them something to do or calmly crate them and give yourself chance to be upset. You’re allowed to be mad, just can’t be mad at them, be mad at yourself for expecting too much or trusting them too early. Management is key, and that’s crucial to YOUR behavior as well. And for most owners I have chatted with, one day it just clicked for pups and things started headed on the up and up. Give yourself grace and remember you got this!!

I didn't have puppy regret but definitely had moments of "what did I get myself into". First week was the hardest. I had a moment where i was in tears and had to ask myself, what am i doing wrong. Every week is an improvement and i reassess whats working, what's not and what else i need to do. These types of videos are refreshing. Its nice to know other people understand the frustration and every puppy is unique.

    No, because I didn't get a puppy.
I wanted to adopt a dog between 2 and 4 years old. I ended up with a year and a half doggie, which is kind of young, but he didn't destroy things anymore, he was gentle to people, and knew how to walk with a leash. I found it through Facebook, he was at a foster home.
Everything turned out perfect. It's been 3 years since I brought him home.

Did you by chance pick a working breed? Sounds like a couch potato I met once who bought an Aussie Shep mix. The “puppy energy” never left and their energies never matched. Be honest with yourself if you either need to step up to meet your dogs needs or rehome to a family the can. You shouldn’t be ashamed if you rehome either. You’d do the best thing for your dog by being honest.

I hear you about peaceful home. But those puppy eyes and snuggles you get ? My guy is eight months old and being a first time dog owner means ... 6am wake up, picking up poop while I'm telling myself -you paid for this... . But my guys waits patiently for me and to my luck isn't yappy. When you come home after a night out and your little guy jumps on your lap all excited -its all worth it !!!

I definitely had puppy regrets and it started with I picked the wrong one. I wish the breeder was there to answer my questions but they went on vacation and left their daughter to finalize things. It was ruff for the first two years, but she's a gem though I had different expectations, starting with her size!

Thanks for sharing these tips Michelle so hopefully others will have more success than I did, and realize they are not alone and it is hard. Although I’ve had multiple dogs in my life, I had to give up and return the puppy I had a few weeks ago. It was just all too much and exhausting and so restrictive. I just realized that although I would love the companionship again, all that is necessary for a new puppy just weren’t things that I wanted to spend my time doing. Perhaps in the future I’ll reconsider a dog but right now I’m so grateful to have my calm home back and good nights sleep.

I have been struggling so badly. We have a dog from the pound that was a stray. She is 53 pounds of muscle and hyper. We adopted her because we suddenly had to put down our poodle. I’ve been in tears though. A LOT. Every other day is a struggle. She was great for like 2 months and now she’s crazy. Biting, jumping, temper tantrums. I try to look at it like she might not have had a puppy experience before. When she rolls around and kicks her legs in the air or mouths the leash it’s like she’s a baby. It’s hard though because she is SO strong and forceful sometimes. It’s really hard to find the balance of rest and play for her, and to work on fine tuning our schedule so that we have flexibility. Some days I’m so focused on working with her that I hardly eat or sleep.
She gets up and eats at 8am and then wants to sleep til like 11am. From that point til her crate time at 2ish, she is nuts. Then in the evening she’s great. 🤦‍♀️ I can’t figure things out.

I have a Great Dane Pit Bull mix in a one bedroom. It's so important for your dog to get proper exercise. Take advantage of the inside time to play brain games. I really thought I was gonna have to get rid of her. But, I found some great tools to manage her. The neighbors love her, they know her barks and what they mean. I wouldn't recommend having a large dog in a small apartment. Thankfully we will be moving to the county again soon. I can't wait to see how much more potential she can experience. 😊😊😊

Hi Michelle and everyone! I hope you are doing well. I had the same feelings. When my pup came home, it was a birthday surprise. She was three weeks old, and well, it was crazy. Getting into everything, watering the floors, upsetting the balance in the house with my other rescues. I wanted to give up, but then I found your videos and realized I was trying to treat the puppy as an adult. She isn't an adult. I started crate training her, moved my dining room into the office, and converted the dining room to Tommi's pen-den area. Put artificial grass outside, more puppy fencing, and a tent with screens. Let her go in and out of the house when she wants. She quickly learned to go potty outside. Around 6 weeks I started taking water away at 8 PM. She would have an accident overnight, then took it at 7:45 PM, still an accident, and finally found the sweet spot at 7:30 PM with no water. She had no accidents. Since it has been hot, I've left water until 10 PM and closed the patio door at midnight for me to sleep until 6 AM. She had no accidents at three months. All-in-all I had to accept the fact that she isn't an adult, and doesn't know what to do. I've been using various games from your channel from 7 to 7:30 AM, 12:30 to 1 PM, then 7 to 7:30 PM. From 7:30 AM/PM to 8 AM/PM is free time to interact with the other pups. I noticed when she started getting nippy, it was time to hug her and kiss on the forehead, turn on relaxing spa music with the sounds of rain, help her into her den, close the first gate, go out to the patio area, pick up any toys or presents that may be out there. Rinse it down with Kennelsol, close up the patio area for the night, take out the trash, and wash her water bowl and dishes. Place the hard toys in a sanitizer bucket, swap out the soft toys, and place the dirty ones in a garment bag to wash. Mop the living room and kitchen with Kennelsol as well. I found the schedule brought order to the chaos of a puppy. Felix and Codi have adapted to her, and she is adapting to the house schedule and what is expected. She does have an accident from time to time, like when someone new visits, she will have an excited pee. I clean it up without saying anything and move on. I found the more I just clean up and not react the less she will do something. For example, the more I try to keep her away from the food container, the more she wants to go there. I leave her alone she sniffs it and walks away. Now, I can't imagine my house without her, the excitement and caution of a puppy.

@@HowToTrainADreamDog Thank you! I've also been training all of the from running to the door to greet the UPS/FedEx/MailMan. They love them cuz they get their treat subscription, toys, and treats orders. Barriers work and have begun to learn that there is one always there. Glad I don't get food delivery and have to train them. I've also trained them that food comes from either their bowls, plates, toys, or my hand, has made it easier to keep them from begging in public, eating street treats, or taking food from others.

Now at 10 months it’s like night and day. She’s so easy to handle. She’s less needy, less destructive and less chaotic. I have a lot more independence now and feel like she’s a companion.
I hope things get better for you soon. ❤️ you’re doing a great job.

The line “feels like a chore” is SO relatable. My two girls are JUST about to hit 6 months and I promise you they are the best dogs I’ve ever had and I still felt like that. But one day they just ‘got it’ out of nowhere. Stick with her and she will begin to feel less like a chore as she becomes more self-sustaining. I know mine did. Have faith!!

I'm struggling with my 11 week old puppy biting me. Whenever i redirect her, time out etc she settles briefly then comes back biting worse, like revenge biting for disciplining her. No matter how many times I teach her its inappropriate. She likes to run at me and frenzy bite. 😔 I lost my old 11 year old lab in April and she was never this bad as a puppy.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  11 місяців тому +1

When the dog isn't responding to redirection it usually means that she is overtired or overstimulated and needs either a nap or a different activity. If she's not getting about 18 hours of sleep, you'll see more of this behavior and less learning. Check out this video for more great tips on biting: ua-cam.com/video/FBI5xOSDQMs/v-deo.html

@@HowToTrainADreamDog She is definitely getting enough sleep I keep a diary and she is getting on average 20 hours. She seems to think biting me is a game and will charge at me then frenzy bite. Anything I redirect her with she just drops it straight away and back to biting. I know she isn't over stimulated as it can happen at any time of the day. Even when she has just woken from a nap 🤷🏼‍♀️. No matter the activity I do. In the middle of training, teaching her to settle and relax on her bed, she will stop her snuffle mat and charge and do it, taking her calmly to the toilet without distractions etc she will try too 😔.
