  • I had zero intentions of filming this video about how the timing wasn't right to adopt my puppy, Finnegan. But I continue to get private messages and comments from new puppy owners that are starting to regret their decision to adopt, because they realize how challenging new dogs are.
I wanted to be vulnerable, honest and truthful with you all. While Fin is THRIVING and doing SO well in our home, it probably wasn't the best timing to adopt him when we did. I had so much going on in my life, but it turned out... all of the fostering I did was preparing me to be the best damn dog mom to my puppy, Finnegan.
And today, we couldn't imagine a life without Fin. He completed our family, and in the end bringing him home was the best thing we could have done
If you are struggling with your new foster dog, or new puppy, please remember that we all have struggles - but you ARE capable. You can do this, and you don't have to do this alone.

I had zero intentions of filming this video, but I wanted to be honest and vulnerable with you. I continue to get private messages and comments from new puppy owners (or people with new foster dogs) that are starting to regret their decision to adopt or foster, because they realize how challenging new dogs are.
So I decided to share a side of my dog mom story I never planned to share, because I believe you all deserve to hear this. While Fin is THRIVING and doing SO well in our home today, it probably wasn't the best timing to adopt him when we did almost 2 years ago. I had SO much going on in my life, but it worked out better than I could’ve dreamed... all of the fostering I did was preparing me to be the best damn dog mom to Finnegan.
I also wanted to be open with you about my struggles, because life is hard. And I want to remind you, if you are not in the right situation to care for a new dog properly - it’s okay to wait. Timing is everything. And if you have already adopted your beautiful dog, but are finding yourself struggling, DON’T give up!!
You got this, you are the right person for your pup. And you don’t have to do this alone. Let me help you @RachelFusaro on Instagram ♥️♥️♥️ xoxo!

Thank YOU for sharing your story. It’s hard to talk about the challenging times, bc we want everything to be picture perfect. But it’s rarely perfect. And that’s okay. The key is to remember it does get better (with LOTS of training, exercise and good routines!) ♥️

Thanks for sharing this with us. I'm a first time puppy mum and I thought I was ready to welcome a new puppy home. I'm working from home and have enough time and money and love to give to him. But then with the second day I took him home, I started crying so bad that this never happen to me. I had read all the posts, watched tons of UA-cam video before I took him home. But I'm questioning myself every day now that did I make a bad decision. Now I know that this will pass with all the comments I'm seeing here so certainly make me stronger in mind and encourages me that both him and I will be better.

So I decided to get a puppy. I did..But I used to think.."This will be easy!" But the truth is..It wasn't! So many sleepless nights and money! I dont really care about the money...But I could not even stand up straight on the first 3 nights. Okay...So puppies are *lots* of work. But when they get older..They learn and they will not stay needy! I regreted getting my puppy on the first 3 nights. But I do not regret it after 2 weeks. She was a whole different dog!
Dogs may be alot to handle when you barely got them..But it gets better..Trust me

Thank you. I just got a puppy a couple of days ago and I’m having a lot of trouble because I’ve never had a puppy and I thought it would be a lot easier than it is, mainly, believing I wouldn’t be soooooo tired all the time. I hope he does get a bit better when he gets a little older because I do love him, so it makes it a lot harder regretting getting him. But I think it’ll get better. I hope. 😢

I cried watching this video. I am having severe puppy blues right now. The worst of it is, the timing IS perfect. I have all the time in the world to be there for him. He is an AMAZING little puppy. Well behaved. Only been here a week and no accidents in 4 days. Sleeps fine in his crate .... so why do I feel so sad? Why can’t I “play” with him? I can’t eat, I feel anxious all the time. I’ve never felt like this before 😔 will this get better? ❤️❤️

I was the same, i loves him, loved spending time with him but I could not stop crying, couldn't sleep or eat. Ended up rehomed my puppy to my new neighbour with two kids. I was really sad and sorry but was sp happy that he went to such a happg family who were so ready to have a puppy for a long time. My puppy is having his best life in there now. I am getting a photo & video update from them. I thanked them for saving my Charlie & my life.

I got my first ever dog : a micro golden doodle, Benji, in the middle of a career change and moving into a brand new house but watching videos like yours made the process much easier. I did my research before choosing this breed and how to prep me and my family for him. Even tough my life was crazy, I was ready and never had any regrets. Benji is now 14 months and a therapy dog in progress in my medical clinic. Thanks for the quality content. 🐶🐾

So ironic that I just randomly read your post. I’m going through a major career change and also getting ready to pick up an 8 week old Cavapoo in a couple weeks. I just feel in my heart he’s meant to be here with my husband and I and feel that he is going to bring us so much love and healing into our lives even more than we expect. I know it’s going to be tough at first but I’m ready. I’ve been binge watching these videos and learning so much. I’m a rehab therapist and it’s crossed my mind to also look into training our puppy to be a therapy dog. Guess what….two weeks ago we decided to name him Benji 😊

I feel like on life you can never be ready for anything. Was I ready for my dog? Well I was at a good point in my life (financially, working from home, spare time, etc.) so all those boxes checked out but still when he came home I didn’t feel ready. I was ready as far as getting everything he needed. I was ready as far as being able to devote time and money and lots of love to him. I was ready for a dog but I wasn’t ready at the same time. I think you can be 100% ready and not ready at the same time for everything. My older sister had a baby last year and she seemed so on top of everything to me. Then she told me when he was born she felt so not ready to be a mother. You wouldn’t know that from looking on the outside (I didn’t even know and I’m super close to her) but sometimes out mind stops us from feeling comfortable with change.
I want to give you all a word of advice. If in life you have gone through the checklist (eg. you want a dog so you make sure it’s the right time, you are financially stable, etc.) and you still feel uneasy once the change occurs (eg. you bring your dog home) just know it’s the change that is causing that. Just push through because your life will be better because of it. I know mine is because of my dog.

This video sums up why I adore you and this channel. You're honest! So many other channels focus on the positive which sets puppy/dog owners up to wonder why things can be so hard raising a dog (possibly then adding to more pups in rescue). The dog community need more people like you! Positive and honest. Dogs are hard work but if you have the proper time and attitude are incredibly rewarding and phenomenal.
First time owners especially need the encouragement and honesty you provide. I'm forever grateful to you for this amazing channel. Keep up the good work! You're an inspiration. Love and Wags to you all from me and my pack 💖🐺💞

Really got serious the last TWO years and binge watched your videos, did research on different breeds, checked rescue websites weekly. Took my time and got my F1b Goldendoodle 1 month ago.
It’s been difficult but honestly easier than I expected. Doing all my research, I knew it would be a challenge. Luckily covid allows me to work from home so I am always available for her for training etc. I was not however 100% financially ready but thank God I still have enough to support her vet, Insurance and every thing else bills. I LOVE HER. It helps that I’m an active person who runs/hikes regularly.

I rescued a dog that came from a VERY abusive home it’s been so hard so I thought I couldn’t handle it. In all reality he is my love and I need him. He needs me too. I traded him for another dog that would be easier to care for then I just felt like a horrible person. Horrible. I cried the way home. I’m so happy that the guy said I can have him back tomorrow and also keep the other dog. Don’t know what I’m going to do but god said everything is JUST. I got this. I’m gonna give these dogs all of my time patience and love. Don’t know what I would do without prayer. My baby was so scared. Can’t believe I let him go but I’m so happy I realized that was the worst decision and to never let his baggage get to me ever again. It’s more harder having a dog that came from an abusive home than people think! I will give him all the time in the world to get over his trauma though. Because we need each other. Forever.. made me so upset I made the wrong decision letting him go!

1 year later and this video really helped me just feel like I’m not alone in this. I’ve adopted a goldendoodle 3 months ago and love him so much. But with my work schedule this thought would always come up as if I made a mistake and went over my head. But everyday and night I wouldn’t have it any other way. I know he’s in my life for a reason. Just one day at a time, definitely not easy but even giving myself a 30 minute break away from him I just feel like I’m missing a part of me.

Thank you for this video. My yorkie passed away last July and I wasn't going to get another dog, but about two days after her death, I was standing in the local shelter with Zola, a cattledog mix. I fell in love, she fit everything I was looking for, so I adopted her. I'm not going to lie, I have doubted my decision it has been a struggle, however, I will never change my decision. The love she has for me and the love o have for her. She has been there through some of my darkest times. As a matter of fact, as I type this in tears, she jumped into the chair to give me hugs and kisses and cuddle. I want to adopt again, but I'm waiting until we both are ready.

Well first of all we are only human we are not perfect we make mistakes sometimes wrong choices. But what matters here and what's important is that you made it work you didn't give up you didn't give up on your dog and that's what makes you a super super super responsible person responsible pet owner pet mom👊😎and a loving pet owner. that's why your my superwoman... this is the most important thing we get from you, that your not a quitter your a fighter, against the odds you made it work👊😎🐾 you go girl😊

After months obsessing , wavering between should I get a puppy, studying breeds, communicating with a couple breeders Im mentally exhausted. I even had a wonderful breeder from the AKC website who has 3 adorable chihuahua puppies offer to drive 300 miles ( if I pay her gas) to bring them to me , when it was too far for me to drive.
But finally today I decided I just CANT DO IT, I CANT DO THE PUPPY THING.
Im just going to have to be patient and keep looking at the shelters and fosters for an older dog.

Hello, it's the first time I leave a comment, I really enjoy your videos, some of them helped me a lot with my puppy Marley. 💜🐶
a few month ago we adopted a puppy from a shelter, and it didn't worked out at all, we wasn't ready and didn't had the experience and the time to give him what he needed ( he had some food agression issues and was growling on my partner when he got to close to him and some other things that needed a lot of time to fix..), so we had to rehome him after a few weeks. I didn't wanted him to become agressive because of our lack of experience. It was a pretty devastating decision, we failed, without even have the time to try. Even if it was the best for this dog, who has now the family he deserves.
I got scared that we couldn't be good dog parents, even if I grew up with many dogs, and raised a puppy before.
But then a month ago I found Marley, his family coudn't keep him because their cat was scared of him, it was his second family already, so we took him in. And it was the perfect match. It was the right time, I got new work schedules, so I can come home for lunch, we found a puppy class not far from home, and he and my partner loved each other instantly.
Timing is really important when you decide to adopt a puppy, we changed a lot in our lives to make space for him in our family, and we have no regrets. He has a lot to learn, but now we really have the time to handle his issues. It might seem easy to make a little space for a little puppy or an adult dog. It is not so easy, the dog will take a huge place in your life and he deserves all the love and time you will be able to give him.
I'm glad you made this video because I think a lot of people are in this case. Thank you, and I hope we will be able to save all the damn dogs 💜💜💜
(sorry for my english, I'm from France )

    • @RachelFusaro
      @RachelFusaro  5 років тому +1

Katja Deutschmann what an inspiring story. Thank you for sharing with me, and what a life you are giving Marley. As you also said, timing is everything
I just wanted people to know that it’s a HUGE deal to bring in a new dog, so much to consider. And that it really takes a community and support when caring for a pup
It’s hard to be so vulnerable and open about tough topics, so thank you for doing it with me. You are amazing and Marley has hit the jackpot with you! 😍 PS: I’ve just spent the last week in London with family, not too far from you :)

    • @stefk1225
      @stefk1225 4 роки тому +1

I'm glad you ended up finding a dog that was the right match for you! I'm glad I stumbled on your comment because right now I'm going through the devastating process of rehoming my rescue dog that I got 2.5 months ago. I rescued him from an organization that I thought was reputable, but they did a completely horrible job on their behavioural assessment. I was completely honest with them through the application process on what kind of dog Im looking for and what I can handle (I'm a university student and first time dog owner), but they gave me a dog that I'm incapable of handling. Hes a total cuddle bug, but he is pretty nervous around strangers as well as most dogs and has severe separation anxiety (all things that I began to notice within the first couple of weeks --his adoption bio gave absolutely no heads up on what hes really like and specific characteristics potential owners should be aware of). I love my dog so so much, which makes it hard to let him go, and I've been working so hard on the training but my mental health has suffered immensely since getting him (first anxiety making me physically sick from overwhelmed by my motherly instincts kicking in, then depression because I was so focused on my dog and the training I lost motivation to take care of myself and complete daily tasks). The hardest part is that fixing separation anxiety (especially in an adult dog) just takes time, and with my mental wellbeing and school I can't provide him with what he needs to be a calm, happy dog. It also doesn't help that I live in an apartment (doesn't help with his nervousness), he isn't big on toys and not that food motivated (scared when I threw a ball to play fetch, hard to mentally stimulate him). Sorry for the long rant; one of the biggest fears is that after this experience I'll never find the right dog for me and I won't be a good dog owner in the future, even though I put my literal blood, sweat and tears into this commitment and only ended up broken.

@@stefk1225 I know that feeling. You give so much of your time and your love and it's So frustrating when their is no progress... They take a lot of space in our life and we need to be aware of that. Our first puppy we got in the shelter wasn't well socialised and couldn't get along with my mums dog because he never learnd how to communicate, he always tried to bite and didn't understood when she was saying NO.. We stopped walking the dogs together because of that behavior. He bit us for playing but we couldn't get him to stop. So nobody came to the house because he we had to teach him to stop first. He had food agression so we had to be carefull every time he was eating something, he had so much energy that we couldn't even sit down on the couch in the evening, he was always jumping and biting. It was so exhausting... We were not ready and not the right fit for him.
A dog takes lot of space and when you take a dog you take that responsability. But there is a moment where you have to take care of you first. You have to be in a good place, to be a good dog parent.
Marley, or dog isn't The Perfect Dog. He jumps on cars, bikes and poeple in the street. And it's a lot of work to make him stop.
But he is a great fit for us. And if I could give you one advice with your dog, or the next one.. Dogs need schedules, they need something they can rely on. That is the Best way to have a happy and balance dog.
I know it' s hard but you will find a dog that will fit your life style.. I've been on both si des, I gave one away to someone Who could take better care and gave a great home to another, and it was the best thing to do in my case.

Hey I need help...my dog died last year and I really miss her and having dog in my life. It's like something misses everyday, I really need a dog. But there's a problem, my step dad won't let me. He says dog would make him nervous and would irritate him and we would fight a lot. He also said I'm not the problem, I mean, I already had a dog plus I take care of horse I'm riding. (My dog could go to barn with me)
Idk what to do, I know he loves dogs, he always pets strays and feeds our local stray cat.
He and my mum are not maried and he says we would probably part our ways if we argue a lot about dog. Please help...

Is it ok to only walk a dog for 10 minuites a day? I have a 7 month old miniature poodle. He has little energy (he'll play for a few minuites and then sleep for like an hour on and off). But I still would like to walk him and people would always say like 30 minuites 2x a day! I tried 20 minutes in the evening and he hated it. After about 5 min. he has to take a breather and after 10 he lies down on the sidewalk and goes in and sleeps for like 2 hours! Is this efficient enough?

@Jennifer Muñoz I have been walking him since 4 months. He enjoys it but after 10 minutes he gets too tired. However, I have been bringing treats and convincing him to keep going for about 15 - 20 minuites but after that he doesn't even care for the treat he just wants to go inside. I wont drag him across the sidewalk lol
